Canada would need to up its defense budget by around $10 Billion a year to get past the 2% of GDP target. Given that they are unlikely to grow the strength, this or a large portion of it will go towards capital expenditure and stockpile of weapons. The F-35A purchase is now a guarantee and may even be announced in the coming weeks. Probably additional investments in AEW&C and perhaps even short to medium ranged air defense systems could also be on the cards.

The Luftwaffe is committed to purchasing the latest tranche Typhoons in its upcoming budget along with 35 F-35A's to replace its Tornado fleet. A follow on Typhoon order (over and above the 15 immediate purchase) is also a pretty safe bet.

The Canadian government has selected Lockheed Martin’s F-35 as the preferred offering in its competition to buy a new fighter jet, government officials said Monday.
Canada plans to buy 88 new fighter jets to replace its CF-18s. The government has budgeted about CA$19 billion (U.S. $15 billion) for the purchase.

Not bad. It is a 1:1 replacement for the operational legacy fleet of 79 single and twin seat F-18s. When Canada joined the F-35 program the original intent was to buy 65 F-35s. This decision for 88 was made prior to the Ukraine fracas and a commitment to increase defense spending.

More than 450 (of the 550) will be non US F-35s (A's and Bs) permanently based in Europe (by 2030) -
In June 2021, Wolters predicted during an Atlantic Council discussion that by 2030, there could be 450 F-35s in Europe. Since then, Finland and Germany have said they will buy the fighter as well, joining the U.S., Belgium, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the U.K., and Switzerland as European nations and partners who have either started fielding the F-35 or have plans to do so.

The response to Russian aggression has helped to drive that demand, and Wolters told the HASC that he was upping his prediction.

“The disposition of the NATO nations with respect to the F-35 is dramatically growing,” Wolters said. “And our hope is, we have 100 on the continent right now, and we anticipate in 2030, growing to 550, and that’s a good fleet.”

Boeing and Northrop Grumman have played their cards extremely well on the E-7 AEW&C. Investing their own money to develop and demonstrate new mission computers, new radar, and borrowing from other programs to modernize the MMI and other sub-systems. Between the imminent USAF interim order, and a potential NATO piggy back on that configuration, they could be looking at a couple of dozen systems produced over the next decade to support these programs.

LAS CRUCES, N.M., (Mar. 31, 2022) – Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon Technologies business, demonstrated that their High Energy Laser Weapon System, or HELWS, can pair with the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), to stop unmanned aircraft threats.

During the live-fire exercise, the HELWS received cues from the NASAMS Fire Distribution Center and used automated target cueing and a full spectrum of electro-optical/infrared sensors to track, identify and quickly take down drones at tactically relevant distances. The HELWS took down nine Group 1 and Group 2 drones over the White Sands Missile Range.

“Drone threats are particularly dangerous in any environment – from soccer stadiums to battlefields – because they’re not easy to spot and take down,” said Annabel Flores, president of Electronic Warfare Systems for RI&S. “We’re showing the world that our defensive laser weapons can plug into existing air defenses to find and drop drones in the blink of an eye.”

Representatives from multiple U.S. military and civilian agencies as well as international ministries of defense gathered at the White Sands Missile Range to see how the HELWS is readily interoperable with existing command and control systems. The NASAMS medium-range air defense solution, co-developed by Raytheon Missiles & Defense and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, consists of the Sentinel radar, Fire Distribution Center, and a suite of effectors. The demonstration showcased the ability to integrate a counter-unmanned aircraft systems solution with NASAMS, adding to its interoperability and medium-range air defense capabilities for a true layered defense.

By adding NASAMS to the list of sensors, effectors, and command and control systems the HELWS already works with, Raytheon Technologies can provide end users maximum flexibility to engage unmanned aircraft threats as part of an integrated air defense.

US supposedly tested hypersonic missile in march when biden was traveling to US but kept it under wraps. Test was from a b52

the missile flew above 65,000 feet and for more than 300 miles. But even at the lower end of hypersonic range -- about 3,800 miles per hour -- a flight of 300 miles is less than 5 minutes.

This was reported by AWIN last week and is the Lockheed Martin version of the HAWC scramjet cruise missile concept, utilizing an Aerojet scramjet engine. Raytheon flew its design (orbital ATK developed scramjet engine) last September.

I am just wondering about something and not necessarily for the IAF. In air bases/airports with ILS, do air force fighters use 3 degree glide slope? Or they are more flexible and use visual approach? Given the short and sharp approaches, does a false capture of the glideslope an issue? I am doing a wild guess here, but in typical cases, IMHO even a 6 degree slope may be okay for fighters. Would I be correct in assuming so?

Oh wow!! The Chinese are really paranoid about the potential military applications of Starlink. The ambition of "Star Chain" for militarized application and its barbaric expansion are worthy of the international community's vigilance
In the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, SpaceX delivered a large number of "Starlink" satellite communication terminals for Ukraine to provide high-speed Internet services. In addition to supporting communications, some experts speculate that "Starlink" interacts with drones, using big data and face recognition technology, and may have been involved in Ukraine's military operations against Russia.

The "Star Chain" project has decided to increase the originally planned 12,000 satellites to 42,000, with features such as high distribution, flexibility, and rapid reconfiguration becoming more prominent. The ambition of "Star Chain" for militarized application and its barbaric expansion deserve the high vigilance of the international community.
After it is fully completed, "Starlink" can implement seamless reconnaissance and surveillance around the world, making the battlefield situation one-way transparent to the United States, allowing the United States to take the initiative in situational awareness; it can provide large-bandwidth, high-speed military communications covering the world. It has built a powerful command and communication network covering UAVs, strategic bombers, nuclear submarines and other combat platforms for the US military; it can significantly improve positioning accuracy and anti-jamming capabilities, provide more accurate navigation and positioning information for long-range precision strikes, and improve damage efficiency; Equipped with a space-based weapon system, or even directly used as a weapon platform, it has become a "smart pebble" all over space, threatening the safety of spacecraft of other countries.

It can be seen that the militarized application of the "Star Chain" project is likely to make the US military take the initiative to occupy the future battlefield and become an "accomplice" for the US to dominate space.

Intensive "weaving of the web" in an attempt to reconstruct the network layout

On March 31, the U.S. Air Force’s official website stated that the F-35A successfully used the “Starlink” satellite for data transmission in the test. The results of the one-week test proved that the transmission of data through the “Starlink” satellite is better than the traditional connection method. 30 times faster, the transmission speed can reach 160M/S.

The test was carried out on the ground, and the receiving terminal of the "Starlink" was integrated in the pod of the F-35A. Experts believe that if the "Starlink" terminal is installed on an unmanned wingman, it can be turned into a tactical unmanned relay platform to share data transmission with fighter jets. On this basis, UAV operators can simultaneously command a large number of UAVs to perform swarm missions.
The "Star Chain" project has comprehensively upgraded ground Internet technology from hardware chips to communication protocols. Its decentralized, lightweight and peer-to-peer new protocol can reduce data transmission delay and improve access speed. Some experts say that if SpaceX sets up several more root servers in space, the "Star Chain" can even become a second independent global Internet, promoting the reshaping and reconstruction of the world network. This will pose a major challenge for all countries to defend cyberspace sovereignty and maintain their own information security.

Data is the “lifeblood” of many modern economic sectors. With the characteristics of high network speed, low latency, full coverage, and low cost, "Starlink" can provide smoother and more reliable communication services than traditional optical fiber communication, and has broad application prospects in the fields of navigation and civil aviation. In particular, the global stock market, securities, foreign exchange and other financial trading markets involve huge funds, and transaction prices are significantly affected by network delays. The application of "Star Chain" technology may have a huge impact on the global financial market, and even on related competitors. "soft kill".

And right on cue, FCAS is delayed. Was expected.

The Germans and Spanish have the F-35 to fall back on. The French have no 5th generation platform. This will force them to a subpar solution i.e. continue to upgrade the Rafale. So while F4 is confirmed and is in the works, Dassault is already talking about the F5 upgrade.

Not really a surprise as such.. the French will probably develop and get their 5th Gen platform independently.

France being the stubborn nation that it is, will invest billions into SCAF and it will arrive in the 2050s as now envisaged.

In the 2050s, in India, MRFA 5.0 will be ongoing. We are still in infant stages (MRFA 3.0). SCAF, Tempest and F-35 Block 70 will all compete.

SCAF will win, but we will get only 36 fighters. Then MRFA 6.0 will be launched. Rinse & Repeat.

P.S. We will also spend a few billions to upgrade Rafale from F3R(I) standard to Rafale F5R(I).

Yes, sir. Fine for France (their industry will remain independent as much as possible).. even better for us, hopefully ours will become fully independent by then. 2047 - nice number eh :wink:

How? Did they reduce the weight or improved the fuel consumption or a combination? Is it even possible in any complex product which is manufactured in this modern era of integrated parts?

It might be important in that if Israel makes good with SA, they can refuel midair just south of Iraq border which will extend their range to Tehran and back to SA airspace.

To hit Tehran and return w/o refueling they have to double the range. I am concluding this by looking at the map that is provided in the article.

There have been report's in the past about the Israeli F35s getting a large capacity drop tanks. Two of those couple with a shape charged warhead internally should be sufficient to provide the un refuled range and strike capacity to get the job done.

Hoping to see Tejas in such striking color schemes

Don't pounce gentlefolk, i know that grey (Tipnis and other shades) is one of the best colors for combat. I just want to drool over some striking schemes done for the purpose of exhibitions.

Maybe some kind artistic CGI souls will have mercy..

Greece proceeds with purchase of 20 Lockheed F-35 fighter jets -PM

Turkey won't be very happy about this news after being kicked out of the F-35 program for flirting with Russia/S-400!! So one squadron of 20 fighters with an option to buy a second squadron of 20.

Absolutely stunning!! The first image of the early universe released by NASA taken from the James Webb telescope now parked at the 2nd Lagrange point, 1.5 million km from earth.

If you held a grain of sand up to the sky at arm’s length, that tiny speck is the size of Webb’s view in this image. Imagine — galaxies galore within a grain, including light from galaxies that traveled billions of years to us!

Spain signs for 20 Project Halcon Eurofighters
Spain has signed for 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft under Project Halcon (Falcon), the manufacturer said on 23 June.

Announced at the ILA Air Show in Berlin, the EUR2.04 billion (USD2.15 billion) deal signed between Airbus and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) will cover 16 single-seat and four twin-seat jets, with deliveries to commence in 2026.

“These new aircraft will enhance and position the Spanish Air Force fighter fleet among its NATO allies with the most modern fighter jet developed in Europe, as well as securing industrial activity through to 2030,” Airbus said.

The contract signature for Project Halcon follows the Spanish government approval for the deal that was granted in December 2021. The Project Halcon contract will see Airbus build Tranche 4 (company officials have previously called them Tranche 3+) Eurofighters that will replace the Spanish Air Force's (Ejército del Aire Español: EdAE) Boeing EF-18 Hornets based at the Canary Islands.

Comparison of Hubble vs Webb image for the same spot in sky.
The photo is of a galaxy field called SMACS 0723, which is located 4.6 billion light-years away. But thanks to gravitational lensing, which is the cause of the distortion seen in the image, Webb is actually able to look much farther away. NASA says that the light that Webb senses is more than 13 billion years old, which means these galaxies were formed just a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang.
More details are visible of the galaxy that was lensed due to a galaxy or a star in the foreground. Barely any details are seen in Hubble image.
