According to several concordant sources, Saudi Arabia is interested in the Rafale. At least a hundred devices, or even 200, are mentioned. But signing a contract is still very hypothetical. The Saudis are also interested in the SCAF program, the future European combat aircraft.

Not a day passes in France without some report in the press citing sources in France or Germany saying "all differences regarding SCAF program have been resolved and the program will go ahead full steam" only to have Dassault respond "meauh... nothing is really resolved, so nothing is moving".

Germany is a US stooge, they will keep hopping in and out of SCAF program only to delay and scuttle it. French leadership knows this, but is too weak to break out of "Frech-German couple at the heart of Europe" delusion and keeps bumbling along aimlessly.

Israel issues formal request for 25 F-15EX based F-15IA fighters from Boeing. Obviously a part of the FMS funding that Israel gets.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense submitted a formal request for the purchase of 25 Boeing F-15EX Eagle II heavy fighters, which in the Israeli Air Force would receive the designation F-15IA.

According to the Israel Defense site, the Israeli government sent a letter of request (LOR) to the US government for the possible purchase of 25 F-15IA fighter jets. The LORs are the first step for the purchase of weapons through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process, from which the detailed negotiation on quantities, prices and conditions derives.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) not only plans to strengthen with a new squadron of F-15IA fighters (per Israel Advance), but also wants to modernize its current 25 F-15I Ra'am to the same level, which would receive the designation F -15I+.

The price is indeed astronomical. That works out to US $350+ million per plane. The same article states that Bahrain bought 18 F-16 Block 70s for $1.12 billion and that is surprising, because that works out to only US $70 million per plane.

I visited http://www.dcsa.mil to find out the price discrepancy between the two deals. I came across a number of links for Bahrain in upgrading their existing F-16 fleet to the Block 70 standard and acquiring new build F-16s ---> https://www.dsca.mil/search/node?keys=Bahrain+F-16. The last link in the DCSA website lists the sale of new build F-16s but has a higher estimated cost, than the final sale amount that the Breaking Defense article states. But that cost is verified from Lockheed Martin's own website which lists the sale amount ---> https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2018-06 ... or-Bahrain

The DCSA website also lists the sale of the Jordanian deal (https://www.dsca.mil/press-media/major- ... 0-aircraft). The link indicates that the Jordanians are purchasing way more weapons and support kit when compared to their Bahrain counterparts. But still the price is astronomical - $70 million per plane and then where is $350+ million for the exact same plane. I don't know whether this is post-COVID inflation prices :)

These kinds of deals are often difficult to compare - one can't just divide deal size by the number of airframes and get the "cost of each aircraft." Deals may include customization, training, simulators, ground support infrastructure, base facilities, spares, support, weapons, spare engines, options for future developments, etc. etc.

Turkey’s Hürjet Trainer Powers up for First Flight

Turkey's newest fast jet, the Turkish Aerospace Hürjet advanced trainer, has begun ground testing ahead of a first flight planned for March 18, the 107th anniversary of the battle of Çanakkale (Gallipoli)....

The aircraft was rolled out in front of guests on January 31 and then completed its first engine run-up test. The president of Defense Industries, İsmail Demir, tweeted that, “Under the strong leadership of our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as the Turkish defense industry, our work continues at full speed in the 100th anniversary of our republic. Hürjet started its engine. Now it’s time to fly.”

The event followed the reveal of an aircraft, possibly the static test airframe, on December 23, but this had no engine, no tailplanes, and was without control surfaces. It was, however, the first time that the Hürjet had been seen with its landing gear attached. The P1 prototype is powered by a General Electric F404-GE-102 turbofan engine and is equipped with a large-area cockpit display.

Turkish Aerospace launched the Hürjet project in 2017, after participating in the so-called Freedom Trainer program with Sierra Nevada. The trainer was based loosely on the U.S. Air Force's TFX specification that led to the Boeing T-7A Red Hawk, and inevitably followed a similar design approach to that of the F-16, which has been built in large numbers by Turkish Aerospace.

The conceptual design was successfully completed in April 2018, with the preliminary design review following in July 2019, and the critical design review in February 2021. Assembly of the first prototype began in September 2021. There will be two flying prototypes, plus a static test airframe and one fatigue test specimen. Prototype P1 is due to make its first flight, and will be in the “minimum configuration”, with no mission or weapons system, and with avionics and cockpit from the Hürkus-B turboprop trainer. Prototype P2 is due to fly in December 2023 and will have a mission system and weapons system installed.

These first two aircraft are to be followed by four Block 0 pre-production aircraft in the advanced jet trainer (AJT) configuration. The first of them, TP1, is expected to fly in December 2024, with the remaining three following in 2025. There will be 12 Block 1 serial production aircraft (again in AJT configuration). The first six of them (HJA 1-6) are due to fly in 2028, with the remainder (HJA 7-12) following in 2029. Full-rate production is planned to begin in 2027.

Japan H3 rocket fails, destruct command issued

The failure is a blow for Japan's space agency JAXA, after the rocket failed to even lift off on its first try last month.

Tuesday's launch from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan initially appeared to be a success, with the flagship rocket lifting off at 10:37am (0137GMT).

The first stage separation appeared to go as planned, but soon afterwards, signs of trouble emerged.

"It seems that the velocity is coming down," announcers on the JAXA live feed said, with the command centre then announcing: "The second stage engine ignition has not been confirmed yet, we continue to confirm the situation."

The live feed was then briefly halted, with a message reading "We are currently checking the status. Please wait."

When it resumed, the command centre announced the news.

"Destruct command has been transmitted to H3 because there was no possibility of achieving the mission."

There was no immediate explanation for why the launch failed.

The H3 is a launch vehicle for an observation satellite, and the rocket has been mooted as a possible competitor to SpaceX's Falcon 9.

Just look at the basic level of capabilities that the FA-50GF (GF= Gap Filler) for Poland includes. Just AIM-9L and AGM-65 Maverick with Sniper pod and a tiny MSA radar and no BVRAAM. This is the basic FA-50 Block 10 LIFT that is drawn from a ROKAF batch and being supplied to Poland till they develop the Block 20.

Tejas Mk1 FOC fighters are miles ahead capability wise versus the FA-50 Block 10. Yet, because the T-50, TA-50 and FA-50 offers a very decent LIFT capability in the air as well as on the ground, it gets selected time and again versus competitors.

Even the timelines for the delivery of the FA-50 Block 20 is from November 2025 to September 2028. Earlier than that, the IAF will be getting a much superior Tejas Mk1A in service.

KAI unveils first gap filler FA-50 light fighter for Poland
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has unveiled the first FA-50 light fighter/attack aircraft for Poland. The East European nation signed for 48 FA-50s in July 2022, making the first down-payment in November. Under a $705 million contract KAI is delivering a batch of 12 aircraft that it had been manufacturing for the Republic of Korea Air Force in order to kick-start the Polish air force’s replacement program for its aging and difficult-to-support MiG-29s and Sukhoi Su-22Ms.

These aircraft are designated FA-50GF—for “gap-filler”—and are essentially Block 10 aircraft with AAQ-33 Sniper targeting pod capability. They have NATO-compatible IFF and are fitted with Link 16 datalink. Armament options include AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles (AAMs) and AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missiles (ASMs). The first two aircraft are scheduled for handover in August, with the remaining 10 to be delivered to Poland by 2025.

The first group of Polish pilots arrived in South Korea in late February to begin a 23-week training course with the ROKAF’s 1st Fighter Wing at Gwangju, where they will fly the T-50 Golden Eagle and TA-50, before conversion to the FA-50 fighter derivative. A second group of pilots is to follow shortly.

Between November 2025 and September 2028, KAI is scheduled to deliver the main $2.3 billion batch of 36 FA-50PLs. This version, which equates to the Block 20, introduces a host of new features including a conformal fuel tank, retractable refueling probe, APG-83 AESA radar, and the ability to carry a much wider range of weapons, including beyond-visual range AAMs and medium-range ASMs. It is expected that the FA-50GFs will be raised to this standard in due course.

Included in the overall FA-50 deal are spares, support, and simulators, all due for delivery by 2025. Another aspect of the deal is the creation of a service center, which is due to begin maintenance activities in 2026.

TA president and CEO Temel Kotil announced developments pertaining to the Turkish Fighter Experimental (TF-X)/National Combat Aircraft (MMU), and the Hürjet advanced jet trainer aircraft, as well as noting upcoming milestones for the ATAK 2 attack helicopter, and the ANKA 3 low-observable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

“We have kept our promise to our nation in the Century of Turkey. MMU and Hürjet taxied, ATAK 2 will start the engine soon, and ANKA 3 will make its first flight,” Kotil announced from his official Twitter account.

Images released by the Defence Industry Agency (SSB) showed the TF-X/MMU advanced ‘fifth-generation' combat aircraft undergoing initial engine runs at TA's Ankara facility on 17 March, and the Hürjet doing the same the following day.

Canal width range between 70 - 80 feet along 6.3 km length. Mirage 2000 wingspan is 30 feet. Gap of just 20 - 25 feet on each side. Imagine the skills and courage.

Anyway, SpaceX's Starship launch has been scrubbed due to a pressure valve problem, and launch activities will resume in 2 days time.
