I try and keep page 1 of this thread, up-to-date. If not me, some other mod will definitely edit it. Refer to that and All Izz Well :)

India's LCA Tejas crosses a major milestone towards final operational clearance (FOC), performs its first mid-air refuel. Details shortly. This a few months after the LCA's 1st hot refuel (pic below) & over a year after its first flight with the @Cobham_plc refielling probe.

India's Tejas Fighter Tests Mid-Air Refueling For The First Time
by Vishnu Som | Updated: September 04, 2018 16:59 IST

The test conducted on Tuesday, shortly after 1 pm, involved a 'dry' link up. In other words, there was no fuel which was actually exchanged between the Indian Air Force Il-78 tanker and the Tejas fighter through its air-to-air refuelling probe. Nine further tests will be conducted to validate this capability including 'wet' tests when fuel is transferred from the tanker to the fighter.

YES! Get the FOC and start producing Mk1s, till the Mk1A is ready. Please do *NOT* stop production line till Mk1A is ready.

Guided munitions are good but better would be a config to take out ground targets using anti-radiation missiles, and couple of air-launched brahmos and those smart air-field weapons. More A2G config and less A2A config. [Deep strike mission mode]

#TejasFOCUpdate
For 1st time PV6 from #Tejas flight-line made a 'dry contact' & got locked with a IL-78. Today's flight was piloted by Gp Capt Rajeev Joshi. The team was stuck at Gwalior AFB for a week owing to rains. More trials in the offing before mid-air refueling. @akananth
AK says that it was PV-6, but we dont have a previous news on current pv trainers getting the probe on the contrary we have a news that it was a problem to get the probe on the current trainers and probe will be certified only on the trainer SPs. It could be a simple typo or a great news, some one has already commented asking for clarification so lets wait for his reply

It was LSP8. But the biggest news is that the simulations and actual test results were a close match. Testing will continue today and throughout this week thanks to that positive result.

^^Not to be a spoilsport, but do we need to disclose these details like the names of pilots? to make the job of ISI easier? Also, wouldnt the actual fuel transfer be a bigger beast as that would lead to shifts in CG. Nevertheless, success/FOC is not far.

We can't be fearful of ISI for any reason whatsoever. If this is a genuine reason due to an observed gap, please keep that secret and get it fixed rather. A minimal exposure reveals such gaps, and it is important to keep it that way. A total black box is no use, even security-wise.

Yes, we need pics from the closely following Tejas! :)

They will come. They did not make a video from the tanker. But they did from the accompanying trainer (backseat), HUD of LSP8 and Gopro mounted in its cockpit.

The great news is that the Tejas can remain small and agile while still having range.

Its a better option than a larger heavier plane which comes with range but poor maneuverability.

Tejas small size will eventually come to be seen as an advantage in battle.

What percentage of fuel gets consumed by Tejas during take off, refueling opens a whole load of options.

#IAF release says during yesterday's dry contact trials, IL-78 MKI tanker of the 78 Sqn was launched from its base in Agra while LSP-8 took off from Gwalior. Ability to carry out A-2-A refueling is 1 of the critical requirements of #FOC https://twitter.com/writetake/status/10 ... 7329954817

Good development and a fine achievement by the designers, especially given the fact that real estate is very limited in the aircraft to allow for required plumbing. Also upgrades required to Flight Control software.

@writetake

So, @IAF_MCC Vice Chief AM SP Deo says the 3rd production line (or 2nd if Aircraft Div is counted out) for #Tejas, must go to a private party and not #HAL. Anything that comes quickly and money stays in the country, we are fine, he is quoted in TOI. So everyone wants a HALt!

Music to my ears!
HAL will actively try to sabotage this, their biggest fear is that LCAs will be churned out on time, and be of better finish quality than they every will.
HAL and MOD babooze will try to sabotage this EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!

They will be very childish about it too! Won't give complete designs, some critical design elements will mysteriously disappear, MOD Babooze will set up impossible terms, and make it a Panchh Varshiya Yojna to select a vendor, cancel it a few times, ask for a few hundred million dollars deposit, all documents in triplicate - Full on Sarkari Haramigiri is going to be on display - that is if this plan ever gets into implementation stage.

More than likely, the IAF Vice chief will be asked to change what he said by MoD - nip it in the bud, so to say.

Let the Sarkari inefficiency of HAL continue !!!!!

HAL needs a competitor. IAF has experience dealing with babus. They should use every known trick to make sure the third line goes to a private vendor. Only when HAL has a competitor will they get their act together.

They need to give this to either Mota Bhai (Don't ever make the mistake of giving it to Chota Bhai !!!), or TATA Aerospace LTD, or L&T as the final integrator.
TASL and L&T already make parts, they can easily be the final integrators as well

L&T, if they have plans for an AMCA line in Coimbatore could make a big bid for that 3rd line btw.
