Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
I'm not against public days, or keeping the cost affordable provided biz visitors ,the reason for the entire show get their due. The exhibitors get very limited time to interact with their prospective customers who may be not just from India.Aero- India shows used to attract a lot of visitors from ASEAN, African and S.Asian nations.
The complaint one often hears however is that biz visitors get little time when on biz days "day trippers" from our def. establishment in particular crowd the show. This is why I suggested one exclusive day for the mil-industry VIP visitors. One can increase the cost of tkts for biz days and allow DPSU "family" passes for the public days only.
Visits to ships, flying displays in similar fashion. While there are incremental improvements, we still need to raise the quality of our shows to the best intl. standards. This is not just the infra at the venue, but also easy transportation to the show, etc. Being a global event this requires the highest possible arrangements for visitors and exhibitors.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
If there are more people coming, just extend the show. Foreign OEMs can be sent packing as anyways their stalls are mostly useless and they are not at all interested in the crowd. Desi stalls can be kept running for couple of more days. I am sure they would be more than happy to do that.Philip wrote:
I suggest that in future, all defexpos should have only biz visitors ,or hugely increase the cost of open day tkts.,and the habit of free passes to DPSU families and friends banned.Otherwise it becomes just another tamasha.
More the people see desi products and get impressed the better.
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Incessant whining. Day 3 was DPSU Families. Crowd wasn't unberable. SSridhar saar came that day only. Ask him.
Day 4 was free and open to public. Per kakarat, it was still manageable despite being crowded. We should have 1 (2 might be asking for too much) day open for all. AI & DefExpo everytime. The number of people who line up outside at the embankment near the Yelahanka airbase is enough to show why that is so. Blr has more defence labs sure. That doesn't mean, we can't have another day open for all. Not doing so doesn't make any sense when you want to MII. DPSUs and DRDO should push for it in fact.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
If people don't see what their country is capable of making, how will they ever take pride in the country, or push for projects like MII or Made in India. As they say, seeing is believing, and many otherwise ordinary people did see with enthusiasm.
Philip sir's comments are like the old Hindi DD commentary of cricket matches held abroad: the commentator would sit in front of a tv in Delhi trying to guess whether it's a boundary or a fielder is waiting to catch the ball. Neither has the full picture, but wax eloquent on ground conditions.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Gents.I too had pals of mine frm Ch. who attended, some tried but couldn't make it, etc.cause of the vehicular chaos.Taking pride, etc. is all very well, but what matters first is a well-organised show where biz opportunities are exploited first.Due to rising costs, in recent years foreign exhibitors have started cutting down with their participation, less exhibits and a smaller staff. The IN and armed forces often have tamashas on occasion- the Marina Beach in Madras and Vizag seafront have witnessed naval affairs. So too have events been held elsewhere.
The air show lasts for 4-5 days, enough time if visitors are staggered as said before. If the intention is to display only desi stuff, I disagree, as most people also want to see all the firang goodies they read about or see on telly. The DRDO has had there own expos at selected centres to promote import substitution. They've attracted good crowds. The DRDO expo could be an annual or twice a year affair, venues changing for each show.
On IAF,Navy and Army Day- the services throw open there establishments to the public. So there are enough occassions when the public can see what the services operate with and how.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
The M777 and the Kalyani model was a hit, in-fact the BAE folks even gave a demo of stuff on the targeting when I did a walk through. Kalyani folks did talk about their lineup that they are getting ready for the fire-tests, about their TI models and the different cal's on the offing. I think that I noticed was the lack of information displays. LM had a kiosk of sorts so did some of the western mfg. Desi folks, not so much, they could've had 55' TV displaying info or may be have tablets with the said info. I think may be GoTN/Tamil university can help translate some of the content for the local population also. If only what we wish happens..

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Any hosting site is OK which gives sharable link. I use photo bucket. Imgur et al are also OK. Google Drive not OK as the images are not embedded in the posts.Bob V wrote:I finally got my pics sorted out. Will post a few over here. Which is the best medium to upload pics over here ? Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Amazing set of photos, Bob and Kakarat!!
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Lovely pics.It shows that there is huge scope for improving the firepower and capabilities of the OPV
which should be built for but not fitted with the extra weaponry and sensors. One can see that there is huge space forward of the main gun.Either the gun can be moved forward, or an MBU at the bows with VLS SAM modules in-between the MBU and main gun.Anti-ship missiles could be located amidships. The 2 gatlings could be enhanced by the LW gun/ missile mounts where advanced MANPADS with a range out to20+km can complement the VLS modules forward if a secondary system is reqd. as they would be operating in blue water zones too, say countering piracy off the African coast where Chin warships operate out of Djibouti.
The news that Russia may tie up with Somaliland and establish its own naval base there is a most interesting development as the US and its allies also possess bases at the entrance to the Red Sea ss well as in the Gulfie states.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
@Bob Saar, please take down the pictures from on board the ships. When I had visited, the Navy officer specifically asked us not to share photos from on the deck. He was okay with pics taken from the dock.
I know mobile cameras were allowed and a lot of people took pics, but as BRF, let's respect the Navy's request.
PS. They should have endorsed a no mobile policy during the visit. No point in banning cameras and allowing mobile phones. Requesting people not to share does not really work...
