6 squadrons with 750 missiles were ordered in 2014 for 4279 crores.
Tata Power had an order of 182 crore for 16 launchers in 2009.

Either cost of missile has come down drastically or IAF has ordered something interesting.

The previous orders included the whole system (radars, vehicles etc) this one probably doesn’t include some of those items?

It is possible IAF is just ordering missiles Akash 1S, 250 missiles to cover for stocks some of which have been test fired in exercises etc.

Is there any official source for the cost per missile figure apart from news article?

Details? The current one does nearly 500-600km on hhh profile. The range is way understated.

It also shows we are not brushing failures under the carpet, also when they might be experimenting with some new modes, none of these things are done in fully imported systems. They are also tested rarely like, crystal maze, Harpoon or, Uran, Club all in our inventory.

In the First Gulf War, of the 297 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired, 9 failed to clear the launch tube, 6 fell in water in the near vicinity and as many as 6 were shot down. A launch fail rate of 5%.

This is new enhancement so it will go thru more testing than user testing of existing weapon. I can’t speak for crystal maze but Harpoon, Uran and Klub all went thru tests when they were procured.

Given the small number of them that were procured it is not like we can afford expedite all our test and live rounds in the tests either.

But however we do cover up in case when such tests fail and their failure don’t typically get much press mention.

Good video as always.

The only nitpick is that solid fuel doesn't burn back to front. It burns from inside to outside.

Dammit I knew I was right initially. I had it setup that way earlier but the animation wasn't working properly. Will fix in future videos.

Majority of Indian defence youtube channels are run by irdw type fanbois. They'll claim 10 things, 3-4 prove to be correct later and they keep on pretending as people with contacts. Their viewers are just the argumentative fools you see on paki forums. They shouldn't be taken seriously.

Defence Decode guy seems to be knowledgeable but the background music he uses and the way he explains defence related technologies is a torture. The guy needs to loosen up/cheer up.

Alpha defence site does it in a more listener friendly and interesting way.

#JustIn India test fires Akash New Generation (Akash NG) surface-to-air #missile from a defence facility off #Odisha coast. Developed by @DRDO_India, the advanced variant of #Akash can strike targets 70 km away. It destroys an UAV simulated today.

Bloody hell! The minimum range of our MANPATGM looks like 100m or less.

Javelin's min is 65m & Spike's is 200m

Does the Akash-NG have the same propulsion as the MRSAM-Barak8 or is it different? Would make sense to have common parts with the MRSAM, at least for the parts that have been developed by DRDO. The seeker and other parts that are supplied by Israel would have to be indigenized.
Also, which tracking and fire control radars are used for the Akash-NG? I am assumiing that they are different from the CAR and Rajendra PESA combo.

The Indian army will reject it saying it cannot engage the enemy at a range of 10 meters.

Yeah, Spikes and even Javelins have more chances of seeing Indian service than any local stuff like NAG MPATGM. Reminds me of the bullshit army tried with Akash. Make launch vehicle out of tank chassis, put radar on tracked vehicle and so on to delay approval and induction in anyway possible. Then when Roosi products couldn't work either in trials, tenders or battle, got the same local stuff on the originally offered truck.

Don't know about radar but the propulsion is dual-pulse solid rocket. Same pedigree as MRSAM. That's why the range is similar too.

This form 2009
The DRDO’s Chief Controller for R&D, Dr Prahlada, has confirmed that the army is displaying fresh interest in the Akash. Asked for details, Dr Prahlada told Business Standard, “I cannot say whether the army is interested in the Akash for its strike corps, or for another role. In any case, the Akash is a mobile system that is suitable for various roles.”
:rotfl:

But protecting fast-moving tank columns from enemy fighters is what the Akash does best. For years the DRDO laboured to fit the entire Akash system --- including radars, missile launchers and command centres --- into T-72 tanks. This provided the Akash with the cross-country mobility to advance deep into enemy territory along with Indian Army strike corps, shooting down enemy fighters at ranges as far out as 25 kilometers.
They had DRDO put Akash on BMP, T-72 and who knows what else.
