Today's order might be actually a final contract signing of those 248 only.

I tend to agree with it.

BDL is the production agency and the ToT is complete now from DRDO and the setup for production is complete. They are now producing the original order of 248.

Now before someone jumps up and asks why it took so long for the GoI to place these orders. The GoI as a customer(IAF-MoD) in this case is waiting for the producer/OEM(BDL-MoD) to be ready before placing the orders. Fair !! to give you a perspective transfer of drawings/trial builds for a a system that is probably 1/10th complexity as the Mk1 from my department to the manufacturing department took us 7 months post Covid with the most invoice management and financial approvals secured beforehand. Of course, DRDO-BDL could have done better no doubt. In this case they earn 65/100, may be they could have pulled another 6 months in the schedule, possible if we ignore Covid.

The desire is to produce 100 missiles per year.
New order is a welcome sight but we need to understand that we are a long way from home. 100 per year is a far way from where our competition is. I hope time is on our side.

Bummer. I took out my starched, Nandu-mark lungi too soon!

Pakis have a stockpile of 500+ AIM-120C5s. Now that the ToT is done, hope we can significantly ramp up, which would need larger order numbers

Deal for desi Astra Mk 1 sealed, India set to test next-gen air-to-air missile ‘this month’

For Astra Mk 2, which will bring back India’s air-to-air combat superiority over Pakistan, DRDO has developed dual-pulse rocket motor to extend range.

Now watch MBDA coming running, offering Meteor integration on the second batch (with Uttam AESA) of Tejas Mk1As.

They will agree to do the same for Tejas Mk2 as well.

===================================================

Added L8r: I spoke too soon :P

From the above article.....
For the Tejas aircraft, MBDA said that the missile can be integrated only when the aircraft is equipped with the indigenous AESA radar, rather than the Israeli one that will be initially used.

VRDE Advanced Armoured Platform
(AAP-Tr) will have NAG Mk2 it looks like @Indrani1_Roy, nice to know.
4 ATGMs are needed for all FICV variants. It'll have provision for APS, loiter munition and mini UAV too, looks alright.

Very interesting. Nag Mk2 is 130mm in dia. Indicating a derivative of MPATGM. That's all I know at the moment.

Astra Mk3
It will be the longest-range version of the Astra missile family. The objective is to achieve a weapon capable of intercepting enemy aircraft more than 300km from the launcher aircraft, flying at speeds in excess of mach 4 (up to mach 7, depending on the source).

To achieve these performances, the Mk3 will make use of a Ramjet type propulsion system, analogous to the European METEOR, which has a declared range of 200km.

The scary details on the Wiki page should convince even a layman that multiple court martials should have been carried out in case of Nag (as well) and how hopeless is it to trust procurement at times on the services alone. Just a few details of the scary story...
In 2008, the Indian Army placed an order for 443 Nag missiles and 13 NAMICA carriers to be delivered within the next three years, starting by December 2009.[23] Nag would be the first ATGM of its type to be included in the army's arsenal. The Army urgently needed the Nag, which uses a tandem-charge high-explosive warhead to penetrate the armor of modern tanks, to improve kill probability.[20] By 2008, the development cost had reached ₹300 crore (US$39.4 million).[23]
. . .
Before the induction of the missile into service, summer trials were carried out in June 2009.[26] In July 2009, the Nag ATGM was cleared for production.[27]
. . .
The Indian Army was happy with the performance and expected to buy 443 missiles for ₹335 crore (US$44.0 million).[30] 450 Nag missiles, along with 13 NAMICA carriers, were expected to be added to the Army's arsenal by 2011 with the successful completion of final validation trials in Rajasthan.[32] In 2011, the project suffered a one-year delay due to the army's changing of its requirements for the NAMICA at the last moment.[33]
. . .
It was tested under extreme weather conditions during day and night, in indirect attack mode as well as in top attack mode, and achieved a direct hit on each target. These trials completed the summer user trials and the missile was expected to proceed towards induction into the Indian Army.[48] The missile was expected to enter production by the end of 2019, according to a senior DRDO official.[49]

On 22 October 2020, India successfully carried out the final trial of the Nag anti-tank guided missile from NAMICA, after which the weapon system is now ready for induction into the Indian Army.[50]

Going by the length of those ATGM canisters, the missile is about 1.2 mtrs long. That missile is <20kgs in weight. Very interesting.

https://twitter.com/delhidefence/status ... 7AZExgHJYg ---> SAAW is a long range stand-off weapon that has been integrated to the Jaguar fighter. It is guided by INS+ GPS. A variant with an Electro-Optical seeker for greater accuracy is under development.

Jaguar was one of the test aircraft for the weapon. It was deployed from a dual ejector rack.

So it's integration should happen quickly accross the fleet.

I am more concerned about ordering of the weapon though

So Jaguar fleet can be tasked for Ground attack fighter on Western and maritime theaters.
Then engine thrust is not a problem.
SU-30 MKI can handle the East.

Sorry Ramana sir, had not seen this. People have already answered. SAAW will be employed from at least Tejas, Su-30 and Jaguar. Integration in the latter two is complete. Flight tests are progressing well.

Fun would be if we insist on integrating Astra Mk1 and Mk2 on Rafale :) and reject Mica NG. Lets see how french respond :)

Oh, the French will readily agree, for a price to do the testing and integration, say 1 billion Euros for one more India Specific Enhancement :)They will make the same money either via this ISE or via sale of Mica NG.

The Rafale will remain a silver bullet fleet, till the arrival of AMCA. The Rafale will be primarily relegated to largely one role - break down the door. Then the Su-30MKIs and Tejas can come in with their kit (Astra Mk2, SFDR + precision ground munitions) to do what they have to do. The French can hold on their precious Rafales :)

We will do some desi jugaad on the Rafale, just like we did with the Mirage 2000. And the French will look the other way.

A successful training launch of an Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, was carried out at approximately 1930 hours today from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The launch validated all operational parameters as also the reliability of the system: Defence Ministry

Boring it might but essential, Agni 4 is probably much cheaper than Agni 5, helps with numbers. We should deter Pakis, China and sundry states like Kuwait and Qatar

Just my thinking. I am hoping it was a K-4 or K5 or K-XYZ under the guise of Agni XYZ. Insha Allah. Tathastu

Remember that in the past decade ( and more) we read about dozens of Prithvi tests. perhaps they were something else but called as Prithvi.

Nothing Chanakian. Seems like a regular test from the deployed stock, picked at random, tested by the user (SFC). These tests are needed to validate reliability, training, ensuring no QC defects etc. Plus sends a message to adversaries that the missiles are deployed & will work at the push of a button

If the systems are proven then maybe start testing in Arabian Sea from time to time. Impact will be higher as there is more traffic but will help with messaging.
