Detailed info about SiGs 6.8x51 hybrid ammunition.
-Uses case design as 7.62x51 ammunition.
-Hybrid stainless steel and brass construction to replace thicker brass construction with stronger and thinner SS section.
-Leads to increased volume of propellant. Stronger construction means higher rating of propellant can be used.
- Weight of cartridge is much lower than 7.62 NATO due to hybrid construction
- Use of brass means heat rejection is much better than cheap steel only ammunition as used by FSU countries.
- Most 7.62 NATO rifles and magazines will be compatible to the round. Only swapping of barrels will be required.
- Uses traditional ammunition manufacturing technique compared to cased telescopic and polymer case ammo.

The rifle entry is Sig MCX Spear, a variant of SiG MCX. SiG MCX is a short stroke AR180 pattern rifle designed for commonality with ME/M16 family (one can swap M4 upper for MCX upper).

SiG has already won US Army handgun contract and are front runners for NGSW contract as well.

If the AK203 and carbine drama spills over to 2022-23, we should bite the bullet and opt for FMS sale of NGSW rifles.

Thakur_B wrote:Time to prioritize SiG and IWI over Fn and HK. IWI is in position to make their entire small arms portfolio locally.
Unless it is a direct import from Israel we can rule out IWI getting any orders. If the 'Make in india' clause in enforced then IWI will be out as as PLR is now a Adani group company and if Modi government now gives any order to PLR then they will be accused of cancelling the last RFP contract to favor Adani.

Under the present circumstances, Sig would be the best bet, but then again not sure if they will be ready to agree to "make in India" by setting up assembly unit in India either through a subsidiary or through a tie-up with an existing manufacturer.

More and more this looks like another cluster ****

The Army has issued RFI to all major foreign small arms manufacturers, including Caracal, Colt, SiG Sauer, Beretta and Kalashnikov. But the significant change in FTP this time is that the RFI has also been sent to multiple Indian firms like the Ordinance Factory Board, Reliance Defence, SSS Defence, Bharat Forge of the Kalyani Group and the Adani-PLR Systems, besides others.

“Under the FTP process, it is usually ‘Buy Global’ category, as the forces buy a global product off the shelf which is then supplied to, in a specific short period. But this time, Indian firms will be participating in the FTP process for carbines,” said a source in the defence and security establishment

Wouldn't the payment happen in INR. So no currency risk. Not sure how capital will be taken out.

In defense of screwdrivergiri, isn't that what the 'Strategic Partnership' model is all about? The idea is for Indian Private Sector companies to set up manufacturing units in collaboration with foreign partners, and manufacture their products in India. That way, hopefully, progressively larger parts of value-added are done in India. People like Tata, L&T, Bharat Forge have progressively indigenized previously-imported products. That is how you get to Atmanirbhar.

Even at 100% screwdrivergiri, it creates jobs for screwdriverers and adds value of driving screws in India instead of foreign countries. :)

isubodh, capital will be taken out of these ventures in exactly the same way the foreign IT-Vity, automobile manufacturers, cellphone manufacturers, and appliance manufacturers take out of India. :)

Astr is literally one 24 year old guy using OFB facilities to make prototypes. While in the past small Gun makers like Accuracy international and Barrett have emerged under similar conditions (literally one person designing guns in a garage), they cannot be considered seriously for large orders due to financial strength and manufacturing facility requirements.

If OFB decided to use his design to complete with the rest. I think it would be win win.

He could well take his place in the gun pantheon next to Kalashnikov and Stoner. Provided that his is a good design.

Few specs from army RFI for carbines
http://www.janes.com/amp/indian-army-is ... Fp1cVMwPQ2

Range 200 M
Accuracy: 5 MoA
Compatibility with OFB made 5.56x45 ammunition
Length: 650mm folded / 800 mm extended
Operation conditions: -20 to 45 degree Celsius
Weight: 3.3 Kg without magazine

These specs make M4 / AR15 derivatives (including Caracal 816) non starters unless with 10" barrels or less due to absence of folding stock.

From: Observer Research Foundation: India’s quest for a new assault rifle is almost over
:
:
:
The breakthrough

After almost a year of stagnation, signs of progress surfaced in September 2020 during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s trip to Moscow for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meet. More recently, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General M.M. Naravane had stated in January 2021 that “negotiations are at an advanced stage” and all issues and differences have been sorted out. It also emerged that the cost per rifle had gone down to INR 70,000 (US$ 962) and INR 6,000 (US$ 82.5) per rifle would be paid to Russia as royalty for licensed production of the AK-203. This would add up to INR 4.03 crores (US$ 55.39 million) for the 671,427 units to be produced at the Korwa Ordnance Factory. In line with COAS’s statement, even the Russian side has confirmed that “all technical and commercial issues have been agreed” and that the deal is at its final stage.

The India-Russia AK-203 deal, hence, is a noticeable improvement in India’s slow and inefficient defence procurement history. Shunning unrealistic requirements and indecisiveness, India’s defence establishment has finally swung into action and seems determined to efficiently modernise the armed forces. Furthermore, the success of this deal would set a precedent, that through close collaboration with its strategic partners, India is not only better equipped to modernise its military, but also promote the Make in India initiative and become more ‘atmanirbhar.’ India should no longer be apprehensive about “foreign collaboration” or feel the need to implement protectionist policies. Doing so would be lethal to ‘atmanirbharta.’

No need for preaching from ORF.
The deal must have required hard negotiations for the price to come down.
And realization it might not happen for Russians to

Poland's much touted service rifle MSBS Grot in service.
The level of QC will make OFB look god like in comparison. This is from a company that made quality AKM pattern rifles for close to half century.

Wow, a thousand dollars per piece for a watered down AK203 (with no length-adjustable stock, no ergonomic fire selector & no 12'o clock rail on handguard). And eighty dollars of royalty fees per rifle - for a design that's freely copied across the world.

Original 203 did but the version we're buying does not. That feature (among others that I mentioned) was removed upon request of Indian MoD negotiators probably to cut costs. Can still fold though. This is confirmed by Kalashnikov's Vladimir Onokoy. This's what our 203 look like:

I don't understand the need for penny pinching when its related to such a crucial and integral piece of equipment , I mean we're gonna be using this as the main assault rifle for the next couple of decades and the least we can do is ensure we're getting the best spec possible .

Even if the individual price is a little higher ,how extra much does that add up to be ? ...A couple hundred million $ over 20 or so years ? , That's pocket change compared to our budget and other buys with Russia .

We're gonna spend what a few billion $ on 30 odd attrition replacements for Su-30 and Mig 29s ,a majority of which lets be honest here will never see combat and yet we're delaying things by ages desperate to save a couple of mil on something which is guaranteed to be the biggest part of combat .

I understand not giving into whatever price Russia demands at face value but as long as the price is affordable the Jawaan should get the best equipment possible , There should be no compromise on the quality of basic necessities like BP jackets, rifle ,ammo ,helmet ,meals and yet al ot of these are still procured using old and arachaic tender methods . I recently saw a RFP for a stainless steel mug .. I mean come on

Its not the usage.. Its the procedure to get it, The L1 system will result in a long and protracted procurement for something so essential and basic, Just find a supplier you trust , give the order and move on to the next item.

problem with that approach would be the corruption that would creep in. giving the order to your relative who suddenly has a steel mug making company. that ends up costing the mug 100 times more than what it would be in open market. dont believe me? check for any govt contract in previous regimes.
the way I would like for these RFPs is to have a time bound, quick online process thats transparent to everyone.

The whole AK203 deal is asinine. The whole INSAS replacement saga can.be summed up as under:

Army: We don't want INSAS
MoD: What do you want?
Army: Multi Caliber vaporware.
MoD: Were you able to find one?
Army: Nah, that was stupid.
MoD: Try this Mk1C thing. They finally fixed it.
Army: Yeah, it's alright, but I don't want 5.56.
MoD: Well, what do you want this time?
Army: 7.62 NATO Sturmgewehr
MoD: I think OFB came up with something in 6.months, it's a bit rough around the edges, try it out?
Army: Sure, but lemme buy some stuff on emergency, while I send everyone on a wild goose chase for an affordable 7.62 NATO sturmgewehr.
MoD: I don't think you are serious, but ok, do it.
Army: You know what, I am rethinking this whole 7.62 NATO rifle thing, they are kind of expensive, I want something affordable for non front line troops.
MoD: How about an overpriced AK in a caliber you never standardised on?
Army: Perffick.

The day they decided that 50% of the orders should be for a different rifle for non front line troops, they should have placed order for Mk1C.

SIG's Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) upgrade for M4 adopted by US SOCOM.
- Compatible with standard m4 lowers.
- based on SiG MCX short stroke AR 180 inspired design.
- adds option of folding stock on m4 while retaining the training and ergonomics.

Expect SiG to offer MCX for carbine tender. Will give them advantage for collapsed length requirement without compromising on barrel length.

A shoe manufacturing company based in Jaipur makes shoes for Indian Army. But instead of selling it directly it used to export it to Israel. From where Indian Army purchase at about 10 times higher cost... This practice was going on for decades. (1/5)

Theatre of the absurd: Comedy show continues.

The much-awaited Army trials for nearly 41,000 light machine guns (LMGs), under the Make in India initiative, has been delayed again as Reliance Armament of Anil Ambani has sought more time to showcase its weapon, ThePrint has learnt.

While trials for the 7.62X51 mm belt-fed LMGs were to begin from 22 February, they have now been postponed to April due to Reliance Armament. The new LMGs are to replace the 5.56x45mm INSAS LMG, which is a derivative of the INSAS assault rifle.

Sources in the defence and security establishment said this is not the first time that Reliance has sought an extension. Sources said Reliance Armament wrote to the Army in February seeking more time to showcase the weapon, which the company says is an indigenous one.

A questionnaire sent to Reliance Defence remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.

The Anil Ambani group is one of the contenders for the project along with Bharat Forge of the Kalyani Group, Adani Group’s PLR systems and the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

The Bengaluru-based SSS Defence, which was one of the original contenders, is understood to have pulled out of the trials as it wants to focus on sniper and the carbines contract.

So why is GOI wasting time and allowing a Bankrupt entity's company to take part in a new procurement program especially when it has defaulted on a contract and not supplied ships to the Navy. Why has Reliance- ADAG group not been black listed by the Defence Ministry?

This is another acquisition which will not be finalized any time soon as the favorite to win this contract is Negev. The vendor IMI has a tie-up with PLR which is owned by the Opposition parties favorite Adani.

If there are three vendors should go ahead with the trials. Some string pulling going on.

Wow, a thousand dollars per piece for a watered down AK203 (with no length-adjustable stock, no ergonomic fire selector & no 12'o clock rail on handguard). And eighty dollars of royalty fees per rifle - for a design that's freely copied across the world.
This is the worst part of the entire saga. We must be the only ones paying royalty to the RUssians for a design which everyone and his cat has already copied to produce their own rifle, including OFB with the TAR. If you modified the TAR with picatinny rails and a folding stock, how different would it be from the AK 203 we are paying so much for? How much better is it really then the Ghatak for that matter?
