Mk1A does improve a lot, but so does FOC (probably only a little). I cannot pin down the particular source now, most likely it could be Twitter-based. However there are two indicators that could (together) be pointing to the same.

"The FOC-standard Tejas is equipped with several advanced features such as Air-to-Air refueling, Beyond Visual Range missile system, etc. It imbibes a lot of manufacturing improvements which were based on the operational feedback of initial LCA fleet with IAF." Source Eco. Times

"The FOC variant will reduce the maintenance man hours and turn-around time resulting in enhanced support for IAF missions." HAL release.

Indranil wrote:IAI is pushing. They made the modifications. Good to have it qualified. If there is an export customer who wants it, they can have it. We also retain the capability (at the minimum as a bargaining chip). Also, we have Python 5s as part of Spyder. So ....
So, they'll invest time & effort to re-certify Python-5, but not Astra-1? The latter has to wait till Mk-1A.

Even without Python-5, we'd do great with Asraam. But none of the other BVRs (Derby or R-77) come close to Astra-1 in terms of capabilities.

So, if I were to prioritize, I'd prioritize Astra-1 integration over Python-5

Is that a Python V that's being carried instead of the R-73E?

https://twitter.com/vaimaniki/status/13 ... 50436?s=20 ---> Its very difficult to spot LCA even from a distance of 3-4 km, even while its climbing showing the delta wing at a good angle. With head on approach or from aide ways its gonna be real difficult to visually spot Tejas I'd imagine even at 5km or so, unless you know where to look for.

Actually HVT sir tweeted that and deleted that tweet later on. So it's either true but not official or HVT sir accidentally tweeted wrong info and corrected later.

Israeli radar, AAM missiles and jamming pod will likely be an issue until Indian replacements (or nominated 3rd party components) are integrated.

Even if Indian substitutes, better to have specific export variants with reduced capabilities for Uttam AESA, Astra Mk.1 and DARE SPJ pod.

Then what is the use of Helmet Mounted Display System?
If HMDS does not provide the same information, how hard is it to include google glass type display in to HMDS?

^ Would be good if true. Per Indranil's earlier comment, the timeframe for MK1 integration with Astra was the same as that of MK1A, which was a bummer

1) We have homegrown weapon (Astra) integrated with foreign platform (Su-30 MKI)
2) We have foreign weapon (Derby) integrated with homegrown platform (Tejas Mk1)
3) Awaiting homegrown weapon on homegrown platform ......

AFAIK, it is using existing IN Derby BVRAAM stocks that were transferred to the IAF after the retirement of LUSH Sea Harriers. We have not yet placed any order for Derby-ER although IAI advertises that if a fighter is certified to carry and use the Derby, it can use the Derby-ER as well, thanks to the same form and fit.

Derby from spyder Sam stockpile is certified to be carried on a fighter. You don't need fresh Derby imports till Astra mk1 is certified.
If Derby ER AAM then it is fresh import.

So, 2+ years after Balakot, our Tejas still doesn't have a weapon to match the Amraam.

Our Su-30 MKIs do, but the order is for a paltry 248 Astras. By comparison, Pakis have 500 AIM-120-C5's in their arsenal. Something they ordered way back in 2006!

They learnt their lessons from Kargil. We haven't learnt ours from either Kargil or Balakot.

Notwithstanding public posturing, if IAF was serious about Tejas, it would have ordered Derby ER and asked for Astra integration. That it hasn't, says something. Can't blame MoD if IAF didn't insist much, even MP had to struggle to get them onboard. However, both are accountable for this delay.

No,
I want confirmation as the empty weight has suddenly gone up by 500 kg in latest ADA posters.

It seems there is mistake as 7040 kg seems to be equipped empty weight were the extra 500 kg comes from weight of pilot, cannon round, chaff/flares, external pylons etc. It doesn't include 2 CCM along with launchers which add 300kg.

The CTOW will remain older 9800kg instead of latest 10330kg figure.

ADA shows ACMA empty weight as 12T which is actually equipped empty weight. Same they may have done for Tejas mk1. I want to therefore get this clarified from Indranil.

The page 1 specs of Tejas mk1 MTOW at 14.1T and external payload of 4.3 T is based on Indranil data. Let us keep it like that unless Indranil confirms otherwise.

These are official numbers from ADA brochures.

Difference between CTOW And Empty weight is 3290 kgs. Of these, 2485 kgs is internal fuel. About 800kgs for pilots, fluids etc. is par for the course. I will find out about the pylons.

Pretty much very close to meeting the original design parameter of 4000kg external payload.
