Tejas today what you are getting is the BEST IN ITS CLASS IN THE WORLD.

Take my word for it.

Quote below from Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar (Retd), former AOC-in-C Western Air Command, Indian Air Force

It must be stated that the LCA Mark 1 and Mark 1A are very good aircraft. We recently conducted a major exercise called Gagan Shakti, and the LCA performed remarkably well. The best range scores and the best weapon delivery emerged from the nine LCAs we had fielded, which really worked wonders. This gives me the confidence to state that the LCA will see us through the next 20 years, if not more, in technological capability terms.

Tweets below from Group Captain Harsh Vardhan Thakur (Retd) - Test Pilot, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

https://twitter.com/hvtiaf/status/11760 ... 87329?s=20 ---> As it's already a widely acknowledged fact, Jaguar has a significant Radius of Action (RoA). It's noteworthy that Tejas is even better.

https://twitter.com/hvtiaf/status/11745 ... 03744?s=20 ---> For weapon trials, Tejas goes from Bangalore to Jaisalmer direct. Even Jaguars can't do that. So whatever the combat radius, it's pretty good.

https://twitter.com/drukkk/status/12202 ... 48640?s=20 ---> Can you throw some light on Tejas low flying ability? Can it take up DPSA role of Jaguar? Is its delta wing versatile enough for Jaguar type, long range, low level flying (with external fuel tanks of course)?
***Answer for above tweet is below***
https://twitter.com/hvtiaf/status/12203 ... 58113?s=20 ---> Yes, I think no problem in that. Tejas can exceed Jaguars.

https://twitter.com/JaidevJamwal/status ... 71488?s=20 ---> Everything else remaining same, do you think that Tejas can have same effect on target as Jaguar, better or worse?
***Answer for above tweet is below***
https://twitter.com/hvtiaf/status/12205 ... 10560?s=20 ---> Yes. Same or Better.

The boys are all experienced pilots.

Boys come from varied backgrounds. M2K, Jaguar, MiG-29, MiG-27 are all represented. Soon there will be boys from Su-30MKI as well. The boys were all very upbeat about their present mount.

Some snippets from crew room chatter.

the Mk1 is better than the non-upgraded Mirage 2000
talk about difficulties with maintenance are exaggerated
intensive operations have been tried out successfully
lots of scope to increase its might.
if it is compared with all other fighters in the IAF for all-round ability, it will easily be within the top third of the list.

A very happy day for me.

Dileep wrote:There was a 'conference' by SIATI on Fri Sat at HAL Convention Centre. Got some gyan from the presentations.

1. HAL really upbeat about completing the production of FOC Mk1 by March 2021.

2. Two of the IOC Mk1s are about to be handed over to IAF in 'these days'. Four FOC to be handed over before FY closes.

3. They are going full steam ahead with Mk1A. Order signing is only a formality.

4. The presentation said the engine is "F404-GE-IN30" and the guy actually said IN30. I can't recall such a designation. Neither can't google uncle. Either the guy have no clue and repeated a typo made by the intern who typed in the ppt or we at BRF have no clue.

5. No 45 Daggers Sqn flew 2,500 operational hours and 3 aircraft completed the 250 hour servicing.

6. 311 "modifications" done concurrently in production.

7. 82 LRU suppliers for 344 types out of which 210 are indigenous.

8. High failure rate of 34 types LRUs which is still being worked on.

9. 3,084 Machined parts

10. 172 Rubber parts

11. 4,329 Sheet Metal parts

12. 1,106 Pipes

13. 10 Acrylic / Plastic parts

14. 427 Composite Parts

15. Capacity is 16 Aircraft/Year ---> Eight at LCA Division, four at Aircraft Division and four at our sourced suppliers (Alpha Tocol Engineering Services Pvt Ltd, TATA Advanced Materials Ltd, Larsen & Toubro and VEM Technologies Private Limited).

16. Six sets of jigs ---> four jigs at Tejas Division, one jig at Aircraft Division and one jig at sub-contractor site (front jig at Dynamatic Technologies Limited, rear jig at Alpha Tocol and mid jig at VEM Technologies Private Limited).

17. They reduced cycle times by adding sub-sub assembly jigs.

18. 43 types of jigs are required.

19. Jigs calibrated to 80 micron using a laser measurement system. That is quite fast. Full interchangeability achieved.

20. Present cycle time: 6 months per set. He outlined the plans to increase and reach the target of 16 sets.

21. 7,200 holes to be drilled per set of wing! They bought a robotic drilling machine that brought down the cycle time from 30 days/20 people to 10 days/2 people. Accuracy also improved. Better cleanliness since composite debris is vacuumed off by the robot.

22. 185 panels are made interchangeability compliant. Include 24 nos of daily inspection panels. Extensive tooling made for panels.

23. All pipe assemblies are made using jigs for full interchangeability and advanced sub assembly preparation.

Senior manager of HAL in a one-on-one meeting says "LCA can crash only if it runs out of fuel". We all touched the wooden table and made a silent prayer.

The TED BF picture is just that, "a picture that people didn't reject right away" during the brainstorming.

But where is the Kisan :D

Jokes apart, many congratulations to Team Tejas, Team IAF and Team Bharat. Militray Aviation has truly come of age in India. The future is bright especially if we can properly harness the energies of the fantastic Indian pvt sector. We must not allow this opportunity to slip for fear of change. Our private sector are patriotic Indians too. They must be harnessed

They absolutely have. The team is more confident about what they can make now. Would you know when the actual signing for the 83 MK1A is going to take place?

This close to AI 2021, the signing should be coordinated to match the importance of the event. If AI 2021 goes by and still no signature, then it starts getting embarrassing to continue this wait for signatures.

India to soon ink two major military aircraft deals worth over Rs 50,000 crore
...
“The Tejas contract will be the first to be approved by the CCS. It is likely to be inked in early-February. The C-295 project, with the participation of Tata as the Indian production agency will follow subsequently,” said an official on Tuesday. The overall cost of acquiring the 83 single-engine Tejas fighters and their support package has been cut down from the earlier around Rs 56,500 crore being demanded by HAL after protracted negotiations, as was reported by TOI last year.
...
The 83 Tejas Mark-1A fighters will have 43 “improvements” to improve maintainability, AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar to replace existing mechanically-steered radar, air-to-air refuelling, long-range BVR (beyond visual range) missiles and advanced electronic warfare to jam enemy radars and missiles. After these 123 fighters, IAF is also looking to induct 170 Tejas Mark-2 or the MWF (medium weight fighter) jets with more powerful engines and advanced avionics. But IAF is banking upon the first 123 Tejas to add to its fighter squadrons, which is down to just 30 (each has 18 jets) when at least 42 are required for the requisite deterrence against Pakistan and China.

I wonder how that miracle was achieved. Did HAL sigh and reduce its profit margin? Or did IAF give up stuff in the support package to reduce the overall cost right now?

I realize it is old news. What I am wondering about is the compromises made by both parties to achieve this goal.

As per news articles last year, HAL cut her profits and the IAF reduced the number of spares. The reason for the compromise was reported last year as well. Discussed on the forum.

HAL cuts its profit on Tejas Mark 1A deal by 50%, fighter jets to take to sky by 2022
https://theprint.in/theprint-essential/ ... 22/383730/
19 March 2020
The big fall in price from an estimated Rs 50,000 crore to just about Rs 37,000 crore is a direct result of a juggling exercise by the IAF, which cut down on its demand list, including spares, logistics support and other issues.

Also, the HAL was directed to cut down its earlier projected profit of 12 per cent to a little over 6 per cent.

Thanks. That's the details I was missing. So the spares and support was reduced...not sure what I feel about that. Hopefully it was IAF asking for extra rather than cutting down on what it considers essential.

Bizarre that agencies within the same government have to perform such maneuvers when dealing with their own.

The math does not add up. A decrease of 13000 crores decreasing the profit by 50% means the profit should be more than 12%. Because the decrease itself is about 26%.

Read the full writeup: the profit was reduced by 50% AND IAF reduced its spares and support package.

Old story that the majority of the legal backlog consists of one government department suing another government department. This is an improvement in that it didn't land up in the court system. Perhaps, learning from this, arbitration can be mandated as a first step in commercial disputes when both parties are part of the government.

Bokwas spin by mediators.

The 56000 crores was for life time maintenence.for 123 Tejas.
The sum was fact found and no discrepancy found.

It seems the quite included LCC spares etc. That makes sense if HAL was a foreign suppliet.like Sukhoi.
So under Nirmalaji it was clarified only flyaway aircraft.
Tomorrow is being presented to CCS per Rajat Pandit.

ramana guru please add to it as long as this govt is there ..thankfully there seems to be less chances of it ..we all have seen excuses for arjun's serviceabilty/availability
also the margin cutting also limits the ability of HAL to pursue some projects like HTT..but thats the best that could be done in current circumstances...darn those bat eaters

This will be a momentous decision and the Tejas/ LCA will emulate our first ever indigenous fighter the HF-24 in numbers to be built after 6 decades! If a MK-1A NLCA is also developed,I am sure that the IN could be persuaded to order at least one sqd. which could be used on the existing 2 carriers, plus other options as I've mentioned in the Vikrant td. Great news about the C-295 too. Cheers all around, kudos to the heroes who've made this possible.

"deals in next few months" onlee. I ain't going to open even a Bisleri bottle for that news. We had heard that a lot.

I may (the Bisleri), if it gives an actual date, quoting a reliable source.

Now, when it ACTUALLY happens.. Well, not gonna tell ya!! One ban is enough!!

We don't need to probably wait that long. The budget speech should tell us enough.

Not the exact squadrons, but you can eliminate all the Mirage 2000, MiG-29, Rafale and Su-30 squadrons from the list.

Number plated squadrons will likely be the ones to get assigned the new Tejas Mk1A birds. Being an avid serial number and squadron history watcher, I am eagerly waiting to see which squadrons will get the honour.

Is it the IAF process to assign new aircraft to Number-Plated squadrons and then stand down existing squadrons whose aircraft are retired (in turn number-plating them)?

So from 2019 March to 2024 Feb that 5 years, for all screams of low sqd numbers, IAF has ordered and would have got 16 fighters. That is 3 fighters per year.

IAF: LCA doesn't have enough features. HAL: We don't have enough orders GoI: We don't have enough money.

IAF: We want more Rafales HAL: We made a deal for F18's GOI: Need to spend money to buy friends.

Number plated squadrons are the ones available right away. Otherwise you have to re-assign a current unit to another unit designation. Lots of administrative headache.

And out of the number plated squadrons, if the Air Chief at the time or a senior Air Marshal happened to have once served in that squadron then that squadron gets the honour of raising the new aircraft being inducted.

Good Example - No 17 Golden Arrows, which currently operates the first Rafale squadron. When the squadron was raised in 2019, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa Sir was the Air Chief. And he served as CO of No 17 Squadron during Kargil in 1999. Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja was also from that squadron. That squadron was number plated sometime between 2010 - 2016 with the retirement of the MiG-21. I can't remember the actual year it was number plated. So when the Rafale was inducted, he was the Air Chief and he picked his old squadron - No 17 Golden Arrows - and a new chapter was born.

Same with No 28 First Supersonics. Then Air Chief Marshal SK Mehra picked that unit to induct the first MiG-29 squadron in 1987. He commanded the squadron in the late 60s.

Boils down to senior air force leadership having nostalgia over their young days in squadrons that paved their career in the IAF. They get to choose the unit, when new aircraft are inducted. So it would all depend on who the Air Chief or senior Air Marshals will be in 2024 (when the first batch of Mk1As get inducted). Loyalty lies to their parent unit. Same with the Army. Regimental Izzat trumps everything else.

Realistically, how I hope all the 18 Trainer from 32 LCA MK1 are delivered by Jan 2024 before MK1A enters service. So 2019-24. Operational 53 LCA + 36 Rafale + 24 SU-30 and 21 MIG 29- these will be IAF inductions on the 5 year time frame plus M-2000 and MIG 29 fully upgraded.

Out of the above 8 Rafale, 12 Su 30 and some 20 LCA are operational - So IAF will probably induct 28Rafale+33 LCA+12 Su-30 +21 Mig 29=94 aircraft over the next 3 years.

IAF probably has what 8 Rafales, 265 SU 30, 59 Mig 29, 44 M-2000, 110 Jags, 120 Bisions and 20 LCA ~ 606 - given 80% availibility in war thats 480 aircraft against the Chinese and Pakis.

One feels we need a concerted 10 years of rapid Domestic inductions to eliminate 1 of these threats.

Interesting back-and-forth between Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar (retd) Sir and another twitter user....

https://twitter.com/Nambitiger1/status/ ... 32352?s=20 ---> This picture (Image 01) was taken by me from the front cockpit of the lead chase Mirage 2000 using a Sony DSC P1 Digital Camera. The LCA is on long finals in a 3 degree descent for Runway 09 about 7 km from touchdown.

https://twitter.com/Defencematrix1/stat ... 39744?s=20 ---> P1 was the camera P2 was the engine.

https://twitter.com/Nambitiger1/status/ ... 19328?s=20 ---> Good one! The M53-P2 was then 16 years in service with the IAF. The Sony DSC P1 was the latest digital camera available in Bangalore, and had been procured by ADA for the big event. Here is a picture (Image 02) from this 3 MP Camera on 9th Feb 2001 during the 4th Flight to Aero India 2001.

https://twitter.com/Defencematrix1/stat ... 81249?s=20 ---> What I have known about the M53-P2 is that, the engine is very efficient and powerful at the same time, very well suiting the Delta Wing configuration of the Mirage 2000, where energy gaining is quick, as losing is also due to high drag while sustaining the turn.

https://twitter.com/Defencematrix1/stat ... 82466?s=20 ---> So, The engine compensates for the energy loss quite well, which makes the Mirage so good in close ranges. Now, GE F404 engine is a good engine, but what I want to know is how well it compensates for the energy loss in Tejas?
