Saar, from Rohit's excellent dhaaga:
(Medium Power Radar - Anuradha)
- In parallel to import of MPR from Israel, DRDO has also been working on domestic MPR.
- Earlier, even this program was called Arudhra but now it seems the name has been changed into Anuradha
- Total IAF req is split between imports and DRDO

Agra: Indian Army Tests Jetpack Technology for Border Surveillance

Feb 28, 2023
Weeks after the Indian Army kickstarted emergency procurement of jetpack suits to bolster its overall
surveillance and combat capabilities along sensitive border areas, including borders with China, a
demonstration of the device was held at the Indian Army Airborne Training School in Agra, officials
said on Tuesday.

A video tweeted by the Indian Aerospace Defence News showed Gravity Industries founder, Richard Browning,
giving a demo of its Jetpack system and flying over a water body, buildings and fields in Agra on Monday.

No standardisation of vests, camouflage, helmets, lack of nvd, small arms sight, radios, quality small arms and army trying to splurge on nonsensical purchase like these. The amount can be used to equip entire para sf to current standards.

I agree. But some token amount of these systems like jetpacks & robotic dogs will play good for PR for external audience and even recruitments. As long as the inductions of these systems is symbolic.

Each of these jetpacks is close to three quarters of a million dollars. Just imagine the number of rifles with sights, NVDs this much money can buy. For reference each US Army soldier is equipped with around $20K worth of equipment. Enough to equip a quarter of PARA SF to bleeding edge.

We could say that this money be saved and buy basics. but numbers wise this deal will not materially eat into IA budgets to constrain purchase of rifles, NVDs etc. What materially eats into IA budgets are other misaligned acquisitions (like buying just 6 apaches or 10 MQ9 reapers). If we stop those we have way way more money to do the basics. This deal is a small fry with still some PR potential and no domestic alt.

What an absolute travesty of procurement practices. Of all the things we as a nation need right now, IA has to pick these "jetpacks" as an emergency purchase because it tickled some higherups fancy and rolled with it. IA's/MOD's procurement policies are becoming irrational, indefensible and frankly harmful to the nation by the day.

Indian army’s new attack system PALM 400 to be a game changer.

The lack of armed drones has dogged the Indian army for a long time. The quest for the military-grade armed remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) is a long pending story for the Indian armed forces. Finally, that is over with the launch of the PALM-400 – the acronym for ‘precision attack loitering system’.

According to the reports, the Indian army has tested the prototype version of the PALM-400 successfully. It fired a thermobaric warhead from the canister which is also developed in India. The system is broadly defined as the armed remotely piloted vehicle (RPV).

The tests were conducted at the highest altitude in Sikkim where PALM-400 RPV was fired from an altitude of 18,000 feet and, after loitering at 19,500 feet. According to the sources, the tests took place in Sikkim.

The combat RPVs need to be tested on stringent parameters, including motion control, motor control, signal integrity and navigational accuracy.

The PALM 400 is the result of a joint venture between AVision Systems (Israel), UVision Air Ltd and Aditya Precitech Private Ltd (APPL). Reports suggest that the contract was given to the Israeli entity in an open tender which is termed a Request for Proposals (RFP) in military parlance.

The RPVs are extremely complex systems which involve multiple systems integration based on advanced sensory elements.

PALM-400 RPV’s firepower
The RPV has achieved a firing range of over 100 km. Technically, the RPVs will have the capability for providing map data for battlefield planners and airstrikes.

While it is not clear whether the sensors are developed jointly, it is learnt that the PALM -400 incorporates the most advanced sensors for its precision attacks based on autonomous integration.

The PALM-400 has been equipped with next-generation dual electro-optical and infrared cameras with alternative navigation systems.

In addition to their intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities, the RPVs can also play a critical role in providing military logistic support.

3 missiles go off target, fall in Rajasthan fields
TNN / Updated: Mar 25, 2023, 12:07 IST

JAISALMER: Three surface-to-air missiles allegedly went off target during trials in Rajasthan’s Pokhran on Friday and fell in deserted fields across at least two villages with explosions, with army officials stressing there was no harm to any life or property in the “misfire”.
An army probe has been ordered into the technical snag that caused the missiles to veer off the firing range instead of hitting the dummy target in the air in Jaisalmer district’s Nachana area.

Wonder what happened here? To have one missile go awry is happenstance. But three of them is a concern.
Veer off means it deviated from the expected path.
In other reports they say these are SA-6 missiles.
They are radar-guided.

Maybe the control actuator snagged and led to flight path deviation.

These are really old systems unless the rounds were procured as part of one of IA's emergency purchases and are relatively new. The SA-6 are quite old, were procured between late 1970s and early 1980's. Need replacement asap.

Sad, isn't it. If 3 Akash missiles had failed, our retired Import Bahadurs would have demanded a COI and a grounding of all the regiments.

We have crappy SA-6 systems and yet the Army dragged its feet on ordering Akash-1S (which itself was forced down its throat by Arun Jaitley). And they have agreed to place an order today only because there is nothing coming from Russia, they have unspent Capex & Rajnath Singh is breathing down their neck

Five women get commissioned into combat role in Army artillery regiment.

They were the stars of the day. Five women cadets - Sakshi Dubey, Aditi Yadav, Pious Mudgil, Akansha and Mehak Saini - were the cynosure of all at Officers Training Academy (OTA) as they became the first set of women to get commissioned into the combat role in the artillery regiment of the Army.

After the pipping ceremony, where parents pin the stars on the lapel at the passing out parade, the women got mobbed by parents, Army officers and others on Saturday. Many congratulated them while others, including senior Army officers, posed for photographs along with them unmindful of the searing peak summer heat.

Lieutenant Mehak Saini, said as her beaming parents stood by the side, "I am not able to describe my joy in words. I have been aiming for this since my college days. Let this be growth for women and a chance for women empowerment. I am a second generation officer as my father is an
officer in the Army. My parents and brother supported me. It starts from the family. That's what helps women break the glass ceiling."

Saini, who hails from Hisar in Haryana, said, "Women are no less than men. We get the same training and I am happy that my posting will encourage juniors to join combat roles."

Lt Col Sabarish Kumar said, "We are from an Army family. I want my daughter to do whatever she likes to do. We give full support. Combat postings do not make us worried as it's part of the Army life, and we are rather proud," he added.

Lieutenant Pious Mudgil, said, "We will get trained together and aim to become experts in the field."

The women cadets who passed out will be trained to handle rocket, medium and field and surveillance and target acquisition units. Three will be posted in units deployed along the northern borders and two in western border.

Director General of Artillery Lt Gen Adosh Kumar said it was a momentous occasion for the regiment of artillery.

"We have made the right beginning. The new officers who have been selected will be given different kinds of training at the artillery centre for around a year and will be posted in the western and northern borders."

He said, "We are in the process of indigenisation and modernisation, and the cadets who got the posting will be exposed to cutting edge technology.”

There are more than 20% women officers in artillery but this will be the first time women will be posted in combat zones.

The decision to commission women officers into artillery was announced in January, he added.

Rekha Singh, wife of Naik Deepak Singh who died in the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020, also got commissioned into the Army. "I am feeling very happy, and this is a very proud moment for me and my family. My husband, whenever he is, must be proud also. I wanted to go through all the things my husband went through and decided to join the Army and become successful," she said. Deepak Singh was awarded Vir Chakra posthumously.

Army plans integrated battlefield surveillance centres, even as several projects underway to boost capabilities for digitized battlefields
NEW DELHI: The Army is slowly but surely cranking up capabilities to fight in the increasingly digitized battlefields. The force is now going for integrated battlefield surveillance and intelligence centres, which will get feeds from a wide array of sensors ranging from satellites and drones to radars and troops on the ground, to provide a composite operational picture for commanders on both the China and Pakistan fronts.

The integrated surveillance centres, dozens of which will be in place for field formations by December 2025, are part of the several “automation, digitisation and networking” projects underway in the 12-lakh strong Army.

The objective is to enhance battlefield operations and surveillance, ensure swifter decision-making by commanders and better meteorological forecasting for frontline troops, improve management of logistics and human resources, top sources said on Friday.

Riding on rapid advances in electronics and information technologies, the Army aims to transform into a more agile, lethal, survivable, technology-driven and future-ready force for “network-centric operations”. China, incidentally, has for long been focussing on “mechanization, informatization and intelligentization” of its already advanced armed forces.
“Automation in the Indian Army is a continuous process which keeps evolving with technology,” a source said. Towards this end, extensive trials of the integrated battlefield surveillance systems were completed in plains, deserts and mountainous terrains last year.

“Project Sanjay, with Bharat Electronics acting as the systems integrator, will enable integration of hundreds of sensors to provide a composite operational picture for commanders and staff at all levels,” he added.
The existing ACCCCS (artillery combat, command, control and communication system) is also undergoing a major upgrade with “migration to defence series maps and utilization of artificial intelligence” under Project Shakti.

“With the trials being successful, it will roll-out across the Army in June this year. Project Sanjay will also integrate with the ACCCS to complete the sensor-shooter grid,” the source said.

Then, there is the “situational awareness module for the Army” (SAMA) as part of the new Army Information and Decision Support System (AIDSS). The system is designed to integrate inputs from all operational, logistical and managerial information systems to present a comprehensive picture to commanders at all levels, based on authorisation and roles, at the click of a button. “SAMA is being fielded this month for validation in one of the corps. The aim is to set AIDSS rolling in two years,” the source said.

Project Anumaan, in collaboration with the National Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), in turn, is geared towards enhancing accuracy of long-range weapons as well as helping troops deployed in harsh terrains on the northern borders with China.

“The weather as well as the enemy are unpredictable. Meteorological inputs are of great significance to field commanders. The artillery uses them on a regular basis to temper its weapon platforms before firing projectiles through the earth’s atmosphere,” the source said.

The Army will also kick off “situational reporting over an enterprise-class GIS platform”, which is configured for operational needs “with a state-of-the-art spatial visualisation, temporal and dynamic querying, and analytics'', in the Udampur-based Northern Command next month. “The other six commands will migrate to the new system later,” the source said.

There is also Project Avagat, inspired by the government’s Gatishakti, to bring in multi-domain spatial awareness on a single GIS platform. The first phase will be operational towards the end of this year, the source said.

The Army has also invested in “captive data centres” in the country, which will be fully operational this year, to acquire “substantial capability to host all applications”, he added.

Some well meaning handles are saying on SM to not share the video because it will further the propaganda of PAFF. While I see merit in it, I disagree with it.

In the video, what we see is the soldier's bravery till his last breath

I want every Indian to watch it and feel their blood boil. Then, we will bay for Paki blood and Modi will have the backing of the entire country to act. The average Indian must realize the evil that Pakistan and Islam represent.

We are lulled into a cozy slumber/stupor, often willingly, because we don't want to face the truth. Such videos bring to us the brutal reality of what it takes to protect this country & its civilization

Soldier deaths in the indian context are largely a symptom of bad policies, procedures, and outdated psychology. You can blame an external threat actor but many things had to fail to create this situation.

Army generals to have uniformity in their uniforms, will shed their regimental affiliations
NEW DELHI: Army generals will no longer don distinctive regimental headgear, like Gorkha hats or maroon berets, or shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belts, lanyards and shoes. They will still wear their dark olive-green uniforms, but with 'standardised' accoutrements that do not display or identify their regimental affiliations

The Army has decided to adopt a common uniform for the one-star Brigadiers, two-star Major Generals, three-star Lieutenant Generals and the four-star General or chief, irrespective of their parent cadre and appointments, from August 1onwards, official sources said on Tuesday.
The decision for this uniformity-in-uniforms was taken in the recent Army commanders’ conference to “promote and strengthen a common identity and approach in service matters among the senior leadership beyond the boundaries of regimentation” in the 12-lakh strong force.

The senior officers, for instance, will wear black belts with the Indian Army’s insignia instead of their regimental ones. Similarly, they will wear anodised golden-coloured stars, Ashoka lion and crossed swords as their shoulder rank badges.

At present, while most wear the golden-coloured ranks, “rifle regiments” like Gorkhas and Garhwalis wear black ones, while the Assam regiment has silver ones. All the uniform buttons will also be green, unlike the brass ones that the Guards or the black ones the Gorkhas wear.

Brigadiers and above ranks will also not wear lanyards, different colours of which are worn by different regiments. They all will also wear dark green berets instead of the five existing colours ranging from maroon ones for Para-Special Forces to black ones for armoured corps as of now.

Junior officers, in the ranks from Lieutenants to Colonels, will however continue to wear their different types of uniforms and accoutrements that have specific association to their respective arms, regiments and services.

This distinct identity is essential for the junior leadership as well as the rank and file to “further strengthen camaraderie, esprit de corps and regimental ethos”, which is the bedrock of soldiering. “At the unit or battalion level, a distinct sense of identity reflects a strong bond among officers and men in the same regiment,” the source said.

Brigadiers and senior ranks are those who have already commanded their battalions or units and are posted in higher formations or headquarters where officers from all arms and services work together.

At present, the 43,000-strong officer cadre in the Army has around 80 Lt-Generals, 300 Major Generals and 1,200 Brigadiers. “A standardised uniform for them will ensure a common identity and reflect the true ethos of the Army,” the source said.

General Manoj Pande, incidentally, became the first-ever officer commissioned in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) to become the Army chief on April 30 last year. On his promotion to the rank of Brigadier from Colonel, he had opted and was selected for the “general cadre stream” that includes the main combat arms of infantry, armoured corps and mechanized infantry.

The Army last year had also introduced a new ergonomically-designed combat uniform with a “unique digital disruptive pattern” that is lighter, stronger, breathable and easier to maintain. The shirt is not tucked into the trouser in the new combat uniform, obviating the need for a belt.

Transformation of Indian Army in digital domain.

Geo-political situation is changing fast in the world. These changes are heralding a new era of challenges and opportunities at the same time for India. Russia- Ukraine war has affected India already on three counts to include lack of requisite support for the defence equipment of Russian origin, ‘No limit’ friendship between Russia & China and above all a special challenge to balance its relationship both with USA and Russia who are opposing each other tooth and nail.

In addition to the above, the conflict scenario is growing in the Indo- Pacific besides China continuing its transgression across Line of Actual Line control (LAC) for more than three years now with major transgressions yet to be resolved in Depsang plains and Demchok. India has speeded its border infrastructure, focussed on indigenisation of the defence equipment and embarked on capability development programmes at the national level.

As far as the Defence Services are concerned, a lot of work is under progress for the theaterisation of the defence forces for enhancing their effectiveness as well as optimisation of stand alone approach based expenditures. While all these things are progressing, each Service is attempting to make itself more potent. The Indian Army is no exception. It has launched a silent technological revolution having declared the Year 2023 as the ‘Year of Transformation’.

Though the ‘Year of Transformation’ has large No of issues and steady progress is being made on multiple counts, the most startling revelation has been the automation and netcentric approach in warfighting which has been the ‘work in progress’ for quite some time but has attained the crucial fructification in the recent past. The year 2023 will be able to transform the Indian Army given the current focus of the Directorate General of Information Systems (DGIS).

No of articles have appeared on the said subject where each has covered certain aspects of this technological transformation. An attempt will be made in this article to highlight the operational need and effectiveness of these automation projects.

The first and foremost requirement of any Army is to have effective Surveillance across the borders not covering only the area of influence but also the area of interest. Both these areas are expanding with increasing range of sensors and growing ranges of the long range vectors. The surveillance requires use of multiple sensors as each type of sensor has its own advantages as well as limitations. The variety of sensors operating from various platforms ranging from underwater locations and extending upto the space do provide large No of inputs but the challenge lies in synthesising this information and making it available in the readable format for military commanders to discern and take timely decisions. This need is being met through Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) known as Project SANJAY (name probably takes its origin from Mahabharat wherein SANJAY was able to see all the happenings of the battlefield despite not being present their physically and was narrating the events of Mahabharat sitting far away from the battlefield. BSS also intended to operate through large No of surveillance centres spread across all along our borders so that sensor information can be fused in the realistic time frame. Though it is not known, there is a high probability of this project leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) as well in the due course.

Having focussed on surveillance, Indian Army has also focussed on effective employment of long range vectors wherein it has operationalised the Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCCS) for effective control of these resources. It will be in fitness of things if the organisational changes are also undertaken and complete rocket & missile forces are also brought under this. This system also known as Project Shakti unleashes accurate fire power on the adversary.

Whether they be the surveillance devices/sensors or the trajectories of the fired warhead, they are susceptible to weather conditions that too in a complex manner. Weather affects Surveillance sensors based on the technology being used by the concerned sensor whereas warhead trajectories traverse through varying layers of weather conditions and therefore only an accurate factoring of this facet can ensure the desired accuracy. Indian Army is seized with this need and operationalising its project ANUMAN to ensure that the accurate weather data is available to all the stakeholders. These are not limited only to Sensors and shooters but a large number of other stakeholders who have to plan their movement in glaciated/adverse terrain besides being of great utility to plan and sustain operations both during war and peace.

The data of sensors and shooters need to be synchronised on a common map system for which a common GIS platform is being developed for all the stakeholders as part of Project AVGAT. The best part is that this is being done in the sync of national effort for Project GATISHAKTI which is harnessing the data from close to 16 ministries. This approach is the best national effort and needs to transcend to all other domains as well.

But all this will be of limited impact if the decision makers are not adequately empowered. The Army has automated the E- Sitreps for providing the information with enhanced readability for which Situational Awareness Modules for the Army (SAMA) has been developed. This will be an important link to the decision support system which itself is being comprehensively automated. Once they are fully operational, it will change the way we fight. Clearly, we shall be able to deliver much more from the existing resources.

Network for Spectrum (NFS) project has provided reasonable bandwidth to the defence forces including Indian Army (IA) which are being utilised for fast processing of data, creation of data centres for multiple purposes & build redundancies. The concept of edge computing will further facilitate the warfighting in a more effective manner. All this will lead to a clear cut battle supremacy against our adversaries, be it China or Pakistan. All other automation projects will be able to utilise this medium for fast and real time processing of the data.

IA has not utilised this year of transformation only for the operational purposes but has expanded the concept to the multiple domains. IA has focussed on operational logistics as well wherein Computerised Inventory Control Project (CICP) is executing automation of Ordnance resource on ERP solutions model. It has the potential to incorporate all other logistics requirements both for war and peace. A consolidated approach will be definitely rewarding.

IA has also focussed on the efficient management of its large Human Resources (HR) through ARPAN which provides the inputs for Indian Army Data Repository and Analytics (INDRA). This technological empowerment is also aiding the decision makers at all levels.

These are not the only initiatives by IA to enter into the domain of Net Centric warfare but all other fields whether linked directly or indirectly are also being automated in a time bound manner. The physical paper from the office is vanishing fast by adoption of the E-office, another effort to leverage the national effort. The E-Office has already been adopted by the Central Government.

The focus has not been only on the current force structure constituents but also on recently introduced AGNIVEERS for whom Project ASAAN ( Army Software for Agnipath Administration and Networking) has been operationalised. IA is touching almost every facet of its automation to make it more capable. As and when we have own operating system (OS) of international standards, infuse modern technological tools, automate after the Business Process Review (BPR) as against automating the current way of doing things, make all automation projects agnostic to OS as well as other linkages and make these scalable & synergistic to all the three services as well as national Stakeholders, the country would be really transformed even if all the aims are not fully achieved in the Year 2023.

MoD signs Rs 500 crore contract to boost Indian Army’s communication system.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) inked a contract with ICOMM Tele, for the procurement of 1,035 numbers of 5/7.5 Ton Radio Relay Communication equipment containers.

The value of the contract which is under the Buy (Indian) Category is nearly Rs 500 crore. According to the MoD, the delivery of the containers is scheduled to commence from the current Financial Year 2023-24.

The Radio Relay Containers will address a long overdue requirement of mobile communication detachments of the Indian Army. These containers will be utilized to provide a protected environment for communication equipment to function in a failsafe and reliable manner.

The containers would be mounted on authorized specialist vehicles and moved as per operational requirements. The company would produce the containers with all equipment and sub-systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

“This will give a further boost to the indigenous manufacturing of defence equipment and stimulate the private sector to actively engage in realizing the vision of Aatmnirbhar Bharat,” said an MoD official.

According to the statement from MoD, the development of such state-of-the-art equipment will also help in boosting exports to friendly countries

the Army has also inducted many new weapons in the recent past to match the PLA strength which include Dhanush Howitzer, M4 Quick Reaction Force Vehicles, All Terrain Vehicles and Tata Rajak Surveillance System among others. The K-9 Vajra Self-Propelled artillery guns are also likely to be inducted in the Army shortly.
Officials said the Army carried out special drills using tank formations with T-90 and T-72 tanks and BMP Infantry Combat Vehicles to cross Indus river whenever need arises in case of any mischief by the Chinese troops which have been deployed in large strength across LAC for over three years now after Sino-Indian standoff started in Eastern Ladakh.
Indus flows from Tibetan territory controlled by the PLA through Eastern Ladakh before entering Pakistan.
“Special drills were conducted by the Army to keep itself ready for any eventualities in Eastern Ladakh especially in case of the PLA trying more incursions using routes of valleys,”
