I am optimistic that this induction will actually happen. I hope there will be a UVLS for K15, Nirbhay & SMART (perhaps for Brahmos & any upcoming AShBM as well) that can be dropped into future ships
SMART is a one of a kind weapon, with no equivalent anywhere else in the world. We should fully leverage this. We already are sprucing up our sensor network in the form of P8Is, Sea Guardians, ASW Helis etc, all of which can feed SMART

Welcome Vagir !
Submarine INS Vagir commissioned, set to give boost to Navy's ISR capabilities, special ops

By PTI
The submarine also has the capability of launching marine commandos for special operations, while its powerful diesel engines can quickly charge batteries for a stealth mission, the Navy added.
MUMBAI: INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari Class submarines, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday, giving a boost to the force's prowess. INS Vagir, which has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited here with technology transfer from France, was commissioned in a ceremony attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar. "The submarine will boost the Indian Navy's capability to further India's maritime interests in deterring the enemy, and conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) to provide decisive blow in the times of crisis," the Navy said.
'Vagir' means sand shark, which represents stealth and fearlessness, two qualities synonymous with the ethos of a submariner, it said. Equipped with some of the best sensors in the world, its weapons package include sufficient wire guided torpedoes and sub-surface to surface missiles to neutralise a large enemy fleet, the Navy said.
The submarine also has the capability of launching marine commandos for special operations, while its powerful diesel engines can quickly charge batteries for a stealth mission, the Navy added. For self defence, it has a state of the art torpedo decoy system, the Navy release added. The commissioning of INS Vagir comes amid the increasing presence of the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean.

They are churning these out at good speed!! The 6 new boats and the new indian nuke boats add a whole new dimension to IN. Glad they are heading down this path! Hopefully they remove the old batteries with Lithium-ION and possibly fortify with a small nuke battery or two - like 50/100 kW design in the follow on after the new 6 boats with AIP. or also when the first 6 are up for refit. That will give them almost psuedo nuke like capabilities.
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
what is a nuke battery?
Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
One of those atomic batteries! Under 1 MW but more likely to be in the 1kW to 50 kW range. Google RTGS..

Why not attempt to build a small reactor it self. Replace the entire propulsion plant (Diesel + battery) with this.
A submarine under 2500 tons should be possible with such reactors.

With regards to the Kilo class its not the Type 65 but the old Russian type 53 torpedo for the same.
For the Kalvari class and Shishukumar, the German wire guided SUT torpedoes are confirmed. This is a let down. The WASS Black Shark torpedoes are much more advanced.
The Varunastra torpedoes have been inducted for surface warships and are in production and have been actively deployed. However, they have not been cleared for deployment onboard submarines as yet. Do not know the reason for the same. However, even if the Varunastra sub launched variant is cleared, it will go to the Kilo class first. The length of the torpedo is apparently not suitable for the TT tubes on the Kalvari Class. I don't know if there is any new development taking place for a variant of the Varunastra that can be fitted on the Kalvari class or not.
Shyena is a light weight torpedo and is deployed from surface ships and helicopters. In the future might even be deployed from MPA's. Not used on board submarines.

There was news in 2016 Varunastra was being Integrated with Sindhugosh class submarines, no news if this has been achived.

The person who ought to be named and shamed is Adm Robin Dhawan, who in 2016, vetoed this idea to go for the mythical P75-I. The subsequent naval chiefs didn't cover themselves in glory either, by allowing our submarine arm to deplete.

It figures. We have a serious "fish rots from the head" situation across our Services. The system has not been re-structured to let the visionary ones rise. Perhaps all these years of C-system, lobby etc leaves us with a very small talent pool.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
One can only hope that with the three additional Kalvari Class boats, they will order a new torpedo. Either the F-21 from Naval Group of France or the Black Shark from WASS of Italy (the original choice for the IN's Scorpene boat) or the DM2A4 from Atlas Elektronik of Germany (currently used by the Pakistan Navy's Agosta 90B submarines). One can only hope that the Indian Navy does not create an unobtanium RFI for a new generation* torpedo which will take another 10 years to arrive!Prem Kumar wrote:Navy Finally Acts On Manohar Parrikar's Advice, Considers Buying Three More Scorpene Submarines

See the bolded & red part below. The initial hiccups and delays of a new class have been overcome and MDL is able to churn out these boats at a much quicker pace. So keep the momentum going and order those three additional boats like now!! Better yet, would be to order a whole new batch of six. If more boats are ordered, these two names will be re-used ---> Kursura and Vagli.

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021
I think the clincher was Naval Group signing up to support the effort and certify the sub after the fitment of the AIP module. They obviously did this after the carrot for 2-3 more Scorpenes was dangled. Also, with the DRDO AIP module and potentially Li-On batteries from Japan, the Scorpene class would become a whole different beast. Naval group has also said, they would want/support export additional subs, built in India. With a proven sea going AIP, the Scorpene class would get a new lease of life.
For India, if we can get Japanese Li-On batteries for the additional Scorpene subs and then upgrade the existing subs also with these batteries, it would give us all the building blocks to build our own diesel electric subs.
The only remaining question would be about the performance of the Indian sonars and sensors as compared to the French ones. We have the Indian USHUS sonars fitted on the Kilo Class and the old German ones on the type 209-1500 and French ones on the Scorpene Class. I am sure IN would have compared the performance of all the three unit.
Any one knows what are challenges of developing sub launched torpedoes, as opposed to surface launched ones? The Varunastra is already deployed from surface ships, but have not been integrated with the Kilo class subs as yet. What are the technical challenges that are yet to be worked out for this to happen? The old Russian Type 53 torpedoes should be replaced as soon as possible. The Varunastra on paper is much better than the old Russian torpedoes.

Indian Navy to deploy 'Made in India' fire fighting bots on aircraft carriers.
In a major success for 'Make in India' in defence, the Indian Navy is soon going to deploy indigenous firefighting bots on its largest warships including the aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.
Speaking with ANI, Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral SN Ghormade discussed about the initiatives taken in the maritime force under the 'Make in India' project and said, "I was confident that the Navy would be able to fulfil a promise made to the Prime Minister on indigenous projects."
"Two contracts have already materialised including a fire fighting bot which has been used in INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya aircraft carriers," Ghormade said on the sidelines of Aero India 2023.
He said the Indian Navy was also working on inducting game-changing technologies like the blue-green laser which can help the force detect underwater vessels and objects.
He said the IDex programme to promote indigenous defence technologies has been a great success for the Indian Navy.
"The Honourable Prime Minister launched 75 challenges. We have really expedited and done this job. We had thought that if we have to achieve success, we have to do things differently. We have made our procedures simple so that we can take these cases ahead. We are sure that by August 15, we would achieve our target as promised to Prime Minister Modi," he said.
He said the Indian Navy is focusing on getting 'Made in India' technologies which will help in achieving the goal of a combat-ready navy equipped with game-changing technologies.
