What a superb way to extend Tejas' range and it can use increased loiter time on target to take photus of smouldering Pindi and dropping a few suitable dumb bombs on Ladenabad Hakkademy before hopping back... just as air raid sirens begin to scream across Riyasat-ul-madeinIndia.

The gingo scenarios are limitless saar...
I was not sure as this was in news recently.
“We have to make it [missile] smaller,” Rane said, adding that the next generation of the BrahMos missile will be “half the weight,” and its size will also be smaller. “We are working on that right now. We will start testing that by the end of next year,” Rane said.

He said the firm would unveil the missile in two to three years, adding that “it would take maybe a year” to begin production. “So, I will say by December 2025 – the middle of 2026, we will have this smaller missile which we can fit on any aircraft,” the CEO said.

Actually a great idea. Not sure how practical.
once we have an unmanned UCAV/Tejas version, it can boosted into the air using a Shourya booster (aka SMART),
then is will glide/fly, drop bombs and missiles, and then come back autonomously and land into closest Indian airfield. to be reused again.
Benefits: need to carry less fuel as takeoff burden is on disposable booster. translating into more payload.
We need Ghatak/autonomous Tejas first.

On the issue of low squadron strength, the IAF has this to say. It was published in Hindi. For any non-Hindi readers, this is the translation (via Google Chacha) along with my edits for easier readability. To all Hindi experts, please correct translation below if there are errors :)

How can the process to order those 50+ additional Mk1As be speeded up?

==========================================================

“As for the 31 squadrons being raised to 42 squadrons, I will not be able to tell when it will happen. We have been trying to move forward for the last many years, but there are some procedures which have to be followed. Second, as we have to get some aircraft from HAL at some rate, the 40 LCAs we wanted should have been received long ago. They're coming now, but we are still two aircraft short of 40."

Further, a representative of the Air Force added:

“Sir, it is difficult to say when it will be completed, but at the rate we are running now, the orders we have placed in the procurement, if they are met and if this 114 MRFA acquisition progresses, we will be in 2030. We should have between 29 and 31 squadrons. We will not go below that. It is necessary to phase out our MiG 21 planes."

I saw on ‘India Defence Updates’ site a couple of days ago that the delivery date of the first Mk1A has been postponed from February 2024 to late 2024. They said HAL has yet to start testing of some new components. Also, since the delivery of 16 LCA trainers is behind schedule, it will delay the delivery of Mk1A also.

Anybody else hear anything about this?

They are not a very reliable channel, not saying news is completely wrong but they have a lot of wild claims. Like today's video that India is going to Lease B1B Bombers from USA, other day they said IAF is importing 200 Gripens. So they may have some vested interests to spread FUD and they seem to favour imports

Boss., did the airforce return part of its capex last year ? Would an intend or finalised plan for 42 squadrons ensure that IAF maintains its acquisition rate of indigenous fighters ?

Interestingly i came across an article saying the indian military would not be able to absorb a defence expenditure of 3% of GDP. 2% seems to be comfortable as things are going. So its definitely not the question of if there is money !

The reporter also tweeted that the additional 50 MK1a's is on the cards. Hope it becomes reality and the order is placed before 2024, rather than wait for HAL to prove that they can deliver 16/year

Ordering 50 more now will give the necessary incentive + pressure on HAL to deliver at the rate desired by the IAF

The reporter in question is Ajay Banerjee of The Tribune. He regularly is a panel member on the Doordarshan program on defence and generally seems better aware of goings on than some other so called reporters. If he says it is on the cards, there is definitely some credence one can give to the original rumor.

Most crucial is the 1 fighter Mk1A delivery this year.

The trainer is the old FOC standard.

This is the best thing that could happen. License production of 414/404, with a extra large stock pile of spares and usables.

And a much larger offer of mk1a

While we know TOT is tamasha, we get land acquired for jet engine factory, we will definitely learn something useful about US engines, much more than direct imports. And we will atleast stock critical engine spares, along with some control over the software to atleast make sure we keep the engines running for some years.

https://twitter.com/VivekSi85847001/sta ... 60129?s=20 ---> "HAL will use the newly opened Nashik facility for production of the Tejas Mk1A along with Bangalore LCA plants, soon after few more things get done. With this we are preparing to increase the rate of delivery from 16 to 24 jets per year," HAL CEO.

https://twitter.com/VivekSi85847001/sta ... 05952?s=20 ---> There is also report that IAF will be ordering 50 more Mk1A, so HAL needs three facilities to fulfill these orders fast. HAL will also be using this facility to churn out exports orders if it comes in the future. Note = Only above page info is his words, this page info is guess for now.

Bumping this up, now we know the Prototype for LCA Mk2 is going to fly only in 2025, so it really cant be in production before 2028. And Mk1a is ready why not order 36 more LCA MK1A , so the production ecosystem can deliver 24 LCA Mk1A by 2027 , it will help facilities which can help in faster induction of LCA Mk2 and AMCA.

I hope this is a low hanging fruit which GOI takes quickly.

There was chatter about the IAF being interested in ordering 50 more Mk1a's. But I will believe it when I see it. It was hard enough to make them agree to the 83

They way things have operated in the past: post induction, with extensive flying experience, feedback from pilots, performance in exercises etc, the IAF will finally decide they want 50 more. By then the production line would have either gone idle or it will be time for Mk2

They are still operating from a place of mistrust. Hopefully this will change over time

50 of what LCA Mk1A : the elta version or the uttam version..

I suspect waiting to see/ better defined uttam version might be a factor, ( it makes less sense to buy 50 elta mk1A, and uttam is probably behind elta when ut cones to mk1A)

And we really need better nomenclature for the mk1A elta -> mk1A uttam , along with weapons evolution

I don't think the model of radar has to be defined right now, if the IAF decides to release an order for 50 additional Mk1A.

Even if it is defined now in the initial order, the radar (and other equipment) can be changed later with mutual consent of the buyer and seller (who are both entities controlled by the GoI).

The last batch will be produced at least 5 years after the first batch. In the meantime, a lot of new equipment and weapons will be tested and qualified. So, I think the last batch will be far ahead of the first batch in equipment and capability.

The last update was that the Uttam radar will be introduced from the 21st Mk1A while the first 20 will have the Israeli radar. So even if Uttam were to be from the 41st Mk1A, it shouldn't impact any follow on orders of Mk1A. But I think it may be the IAF's choice to wait a little longer to find if this might impact its MRFA plans. For once and for the first time, I am being critical of the Indian govt that they only force the hands of the armed forces when it comes to their urgent needs and let the forces decide when and what they want to order when it comes to crucial / strategic needs. So only when IAF is told that MRFA is further delayed or dead, will the IAF panic and then the Govt will force their hand to place additional orders for Tejas Mk1A.

That's not the last update . This is

https://delhidefencereview.com/2022/09/ ... rder-size/
DDR has learnt that this plan might have been modified now. There are indications that the indigenous Uttam derivative may start equipping Tejas Mk1A fighters only from the 41st unit produced, thereby reducing the initial order size for Uttam radar sets to 33 units from the 53 units that was being projected earlier. HAL could not be reached for comment.
And I think given past history, it is quite possible that folks are waiting for the uttam radar firm up/confidence gain to issue the order

There are reasons why uttam might be desired to be specified along with an indicative schedule

I am not going to ever post on Twitter.

But I want to flip a bird to all those clowns who called it a 3 legged Cheeta.

Or who said that this is an inferior product.

If such an integration was required by an imported fighter, the OEM would have asked for an arm and a leg.
