US, NATO, and other Western officials had recorded Russian forces taking control of US-made shoulder-fired weapons, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft systems that the Ukrainian army left behind on the battlefield.

The sources suggest that Russia has shipped some of these weapons to Iran, probably so the country can disassemble them and examine the technology to produce similar weapons.

It seems that Slovakia and Poland are sending Ukraine Mig 29s. The former is sending 13 the latter 4.

I wonder what variant and what weapons. Ukraine don’t manufacture Mig parts and only the Indians and Israelis have actually mated western missiles to it…

probably become target practice for the robust anti air Russian defence systems., but the motivation to send them would be free second hand western fighters !

Free initially but training spare parts etc and PBS will have to be paid for , Poland is mounting a huge amount of debt, its going to be a big problem for all neighbors by 2030, like 1930, Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany and Belarus ( without Russian protection) will loose land to it.

The fools in Lithuania, Ukraine, Germany don't realize this. NATO like Greece Turkey, is useless if the adversary is not Russia.

Isnt the Polish armed forces already one of the biggest in EU? Earlier they had obsolete former SU weapon stock which they were slowly replacing. The Ukrainian war has only accelerated this with Poland transferring its stocks to Ukraine and poised to get modern weapons in return free of cost.

It will only take a single rabid Polish nationalist leader to point these weapons at Germany.

No one in Europe's leaders is thinking beyond the next drug dose of somehow humiliating Putin, however flimsy and ridiculous it may be. Its exactly that - crack addict behaviour, delusional, paranoid, reckless.

for the first 6 months or so the russkies handled Ukrainians with kids gloves and have worked very hard to prevent civilian casualty even if it was very counterproductive military strategy wise. Neither Poles and certainly not the germans will get similar courtesy.

I don't think anything will be free. US will making either Polish or Ukrainians pay in loans for this capex.
Plus US will certainly make money in maintenance contracts.

It's not just Europe. Plenty of whackjobs like that in the US Senate and in the State Dept. In fact, the US side of this is the main driving force. Without the US side, there would be no war in Ukraine.

Of course. Europe has made its only too easy for the US thanks to their woke attitude. No wonder they got the disdainful "**** the EU" compliment from Nuland.

extremely serious stuff.

Crossing a red of red lines:

CND condemns UK decision to send depleted uranium shells to Ukraine
The UK government is sending depleted uranium shells for use in the Challenger 2 tanks gifted to Ukraine, a move CND has condemned as an additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict.

Defence Minister Baroness Goldie admitted in the answer to a written question that armour piercing rounds containing depleted uranium (DU) were included in its tank package for Kiev. She added that the rounds “are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armoured vehicles.”

A byproduct of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons, DU emits three quarters of the radioactivity of natural uranium and shares many of its risks and dangers. It is used in armour piercing rounds as it is heavy and can easily penetrate steel. However on impact, toxic or radioactive dust can be released and subsequently inhaled.

DU shells were used extensively by the US and British in Iraq in 1991 and 2003, as well as in the Balkans during the 1990s.

It is thought that the extensive use of these shells is responsible for the sharp rise in the incidence rate of some cancers like breast cancer or lymphoma in the areas they were used. Other illnesses linked to DU include kidney failure, nervous system disorders, lung disease and reproductive problems. However, a lack of reliable data on exposure to DU means no large-scale study on its true impact exists.

CND General Secretary Kate Hudson said:

“Like in Iraq, the addition of depleted uranium ammunition into this conflict will only increase the long-term suffering of the civilians caught up in this conflict. DU shells have already been implicated in thousands of unnecessary deaths from cancer and other serious illnesses. CND has repeatedly called for the UK government to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts. Sending them into yet another war zone will not help the people of Ukraine.”

UK to supply depleted uranium shells to Ukraine — deputy defense secretary
"Alongside our granting of a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, we will be providing ammunition including armor piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium. Such rounds are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armored vehicles," Baroness Annabel Goldie said in a statement
LONDON, March 21. /TASS/. The British authorities will supply Ukraine with shells containing depleted uranium and having increased efficiency in destroying armored vehicles, as follows from a written response from Deputy Secretary of Defense, Baroness Annabel Goldie, to a question from a member of the House of Lords, Raymond Jolliffe.

"Alongside our granting of a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, we will be providing ammunition including armor piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium. Such rounds are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armored vehicles," Goldie said in a statement uploaded to the parliamentary website.

British military assistance to Ukraine in 2022 amounted to about Ј2.3 billion ($2.8 billion). In particular, London sent more than 10,000 NLAW anti-tank missile systems, more than 200 armored vehicles, M270 multiple launch rocket systems and Brimstone high-accuracy missiles. British instructors have already trained more than 10,000 Ukrainian troops. UK authorities estimate humanitarian and economic assistance provided at Ј1.5 billion ($1.86 billion). In 2023, the British authorities intend to allocate at least $2.3 billion for military assistance to Ukraine.

WTH is Sunak doing? It appears he has no say in these matters and is a puppet of Def min Ben Wallace. After mooching Zelinsky shamelessly and now failing to protect Indian consulate in London, one starts to wonder if there remains any dharmic bone in his body. Very disappointing to see my speculation that he will only be allowed to clean up the domestic mess and matters of defence and foreign policy will be out of his reach come true.

It is simple -- instead of spending a ton of money in safe disposal of DU rounds, they are throwing it in Ukraine trash heap.

Also, all this is going to have to be repaid by Ukraine. I believe the European support is similar to the US support -- i.e. it is lend/lease program and its equivalent.

I am not surprised , if any Indian politician has to rise in the West he has to play to thier tunes lest he be accused as an Indian. The pramila Jaypal's and Ro Khanna 's bad mouth India in Kashmir to pass the loyalty test.

Defence and international relations are all led by the US and followed through by the British bureaucracy, much like India and Bhutan. It would take a Margaret thatcher to go against the status quo. Sunak is there playing to the gallery and keeping domestic audience happy.

Some numbers, again.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IA1rcQM_QY, Col Douglas Macgregor
the ukrainians should have
3:03 obliged the Russians by pouring tens of
3:06 thousands of troops in eastern Ukraine
3:08 into offensives over the last several
3:11 months attack after attack after attack
3:13 this started long before uh the fall in
3:16 uh last year
3:18 and they've lost tens of thousands of
3:19 people the most recent
3:22 figures that I've seen and they're very
3:24 very credible suggests that there were
3:26 up to about 250 000 dead ukrainians
3:29 I mean that's that's a horrific number
3:31 for a war that's only been going on for
3:33 about a year
5:22 ..I mean just this morning I I
5:24 read the the final tallies coming in
5:26 from credible sources that the Russian
5:28 integrated air defenses have shot down
5:30 402 Jets
5:32 256 helicopters whoa thousands and
5:36 thousands of unmanned aircraft or what
5:38 we call drones
5:39 so the integrated Russian air defenses
5:41 have turned out to be extremely lethal
5:43 and very very effective

This is a proxy war. West vs Russia. I think it is better for Russia to declare cease fire and keep the territories under her control.

Ukraine had inherited close to 1000 combat jets post 91.

By 2022, most of them were either out of service or unserviceable.

However, this 402 number is very high.

Roos reportedly using T-55s
I personally believe that these will go into fortified defensive positions acting as pillboxes.
...Armored corps veterans says the tanks given to the infantry units were largely static and had limited hull movement but full turret movement. The guns are manned by armored corps gunners. The .50 calibre coaxial guns were also used in cross-border firing.
...Disused tanks were extensively used as pillboxes during the Second World War where their hulls were buried in ditches and the hulls used as static artillery. The Soviet Union stationed thousands of obsolete tanks as pillboxes along the border with China during the 1960s.

Apart from using T-55's in static defensive positions (nothing wrong in that) there is a practical reason for their use.
Iran had bought a number of T-55 tanks from Russia, which it upgraded. The upgraded gun is no longer 100mm, however Iran regains the
manufacturing capacity for 100mm shells and is reportedly supplying them to Russia (Russia probably retains 100 mm shell capacity too).
Since there is an overall shortage of heavier caliber shells, it makes sense to use 100mm shells on a T-55, against infantry, bunkers etc
instead of scarcer heavier caliber shells.

I agree, and Iran and Viet Nam are two great non Indian examples that also find creative ways to employ old gear.
Iran followed our lead and got their T-55s upgunned with the 105 rifled cannon

Ammo should be in plenty as I believe the Rapira fires the same shells as the D-10 cannon on the T-55(?)
Both use different shells

Russia claims to have shot down a "smart bomb" reportedly supplied to Ukrainian forces by the US to double Kyiv's battlefield firing range.

The Ground-launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) is fired on a rocket and then glides to its target, guided by GPS satellite, at 150 km range, around double that of the US-supplied Himars that Kyiv deployed so successfully last year.

Ukraine had long sought the weapons to hit Russian command centres, supply lines and other targets deep behind the front line. Washington is thought to have begun supplying them this year.

The Russian statement said air defence forces had shot down the GLSDB within the last 24 hours, without saying where this had taken place. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/ ... -zelensky/

Zelly and Kuleba have started downplaying the much talked about Major Spring Offensive to take back Crimea, Moscow, timbuktu whatever. They have started saying that we should stop saying things like decisive battle, all out offensive etc because it may not be decisive and they need a lot more equipment to go on the offensive.

Means they are clearly see the dead end of the road, and a lot of others outside Ukraine do too.

This charade and mindless loss of mostly Ukrainien lives will drag on for a couple of months until either an off ramp is built for stumbling Biden or the US will just suddenly dump Ukraine as their fighting machine grids to a halt and collapses and go after a larger threat to humanity and the planet ie China.

You are believing the Western/Ukranian narrative, Ukraine was well prepared long before 24 Feb 22, they probably had a lot of Nasams, Hawk and few Patriots before then.

With Nato repair depots all shifted in Poland, with Ukraine given endless Fuel, Food , Ammo, missiles, Satellite surveillance, Nato AWACS, Drones running long hours, with Nato transport fleet working overtime to keeping Ukraine in the war. This is a true battle of attrition on both sides.

If PRC decided to attack and conquer Taiwan today, the battle might be intense for 1 week but I doubt US will be able to help beyond that, for PRC it might to tempting to use NOKO to attack SOKO and attack Taiwan and get complete control over the World's chip markets.
