In India, present updated missile "BrahMos"
Russian-Indian joint venture "BrahMos Aerospace» (BrahMos Aerospace) at the international exhibition of land and naval armaments "Defekspo 2014» (Defexpo) first introduce full-scale model of its new missile "BrahMos-M."

This smaller version of the supersonic cruise missile "BrahMos", said today in an interview with Trend. ITAR-TASS President "BrahMos Aerospace" Sivathanu Pillai.

"Our challenge is to reduce the weight of the rocket, so that it can integrate with a variety of platforms, including equip its fifth-generation fighter being developed jointly by India and Russia," - he said, adding that the fifth-generation fighter and carrier-based fighter MiG-29K / KUB will be equipped with two missiles "BrahMos-M" and Su-30MKI - three.

According to him, before the board of directors, "BrahMos Aerospace" "gave the nod to start the development of a new missile." "We hope that after about three years, will be the first launch" - said Pillay.

It is assumed that the length of the rocket will reach 6 m and the diameter - 50 cm It can reach speeds of up to Mach 3.5 (3.5 times the speed of sound) in comparison with the number of M = 2.8, which is typical for current modifications missile "BrahMos", and carry a warhead weighing 200 to 300 kg up to a maximum range of 290 km. Tested today missile "BrahMos" represent two-stage cruise missiles length of 10 meters and a diameter of 70 cm

In addition, "Defekspo 2014" bring layout launcher "BrahMos", which will be installed on the Su-30MKI fighters. It has already been successfully tested. "We expect that in the fourth quarter of this year will be the first version of the missile launch aircraft" BrahMos "with the Su-30MKI - Pillay explained and added that within two to three months to begin the throwing test. This is the first stage of missile control, during which it becomes clear whether they are able to leave without any problems launcher.

"Defekspo" is the largest exhibition of its kind in India and is held every two years in New Delhi. This year it will be held from 6 to 9 February.

Sarabpalji and Jamwal ji,

Could you do me a favour. Could you please ask what is that big green block on the right side of Arjun (beside the gunner's sight marked in red). People have said that it is the Laser warning and counter measure system. However, I don't think so. the Laser warning system are above the turret on the corners (you can see them covered with the red bags in the second picture).

In the tank showed at Def-expo, it may be covered with something.

If I manage to visit, I'll definitely ask someone. Most of the time, people standing near tank (outside pavillion) are not scientists and don't answer detailed questions.
Last time I managed to get a serving army officer to answer some questions about T-90, but couldn't find someone knowledgeable for Arjun.

Is there plans to put the Dhanush on the Arjun platform? Something similar to the catapult project? is there any ongoing project to build a system similar to Bhim using Dhanush and Arjun?

There is a requirement for 155/52 tracked. So, Dhanush may not be on tracks unless user asks for it, after trials are successful and there is spare gun available.

I don't think they are ERA. Looks like a simple cover. My guess is that the back of the "green thing" is made of an ERA tile. Also, there might be another ERA plate on the turret of Arjun, behind the green thing. If you see from the top, they will from a V in the XY plane, providing the necessary protection. But this is a wild guess.

HAL, BEL line up their top products for Defexpo
Bangalore-based defence public sector companies Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) said they have lined up their top products and future hardware for showcasing before an international defence community gathering at Defexpo India 2014, which opens in New Delhi on Thursday.

Military aircraft maker HAL said its prominent displays include models of the Multirole Transport Aircraft, the Light Utility Helicopter, combat helicopter LCH, and the HTT-40 basic trainer.

BEL said the network-centric warfare systems it has developed for the defence forces would be its main showpiece. The electronics major’s portfolio includes novel and secure communication systems, including computer that can be worn on the wrist or held by hand, and radars.

The Ministry of Defence organises its exhibition focussing on land, naval and internal security systems every two years, alternating it with the biennial Bangalore Aero India, air show-cum-exhibition.

At this year’s three-day Defexpo, HAL said it would include the multipurpose Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter, the Intermediate Jet Trainer, the Sukhoi-30 fighter, the Dornier-228 and the Hawk advanced pilot trainer. The pilotless target aircraft Lakshya for missile practice, the PSLV and GSLV rockets that are made for the space programme will also be on display at the Pragati Maidan event, the defence public enterprise said.

HAL chairman R.K. Tyagi is slated to open the HAL stall on Thursday. The event will have seminars, conferences and business meetings on the trends and opportunities in the defence sector.

“Defexpo is an ideal platform for Indian defence industries to showcase their capabilities and explore the latest trends of [the country’s] defence needs on land, sea and internal security fronts,” HAL said. At the 2012 edition, there were 232 foreign companies from 32 countries.

BEL’s naval network-centric warfare solutions, for example, include a Combat Management System, which automates tactical data from a ship’s sensors to enable decision making by the ship’s command. The IP-based Composite Communication System combines voice, data and video and has software developed at BEL.

The BEL-made night vision devices are considered crucial for soldiers. There are also systems that enable electronic warfare and avionics segments, radar fingerprinting systems and avionics components for HAL’s light combat aircraft. BEL has developed them independently as well as with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Best thing for the Army would be to induct the Dhanush, Arjun G6, and the Bharat Forge Austrian gun. They should also upgrade the 105mm gun's just like the South African's did. The range is phenomenal.

So it is clear now what that box in the front is. It is a Lahat fire control/guidance system. From other photos, it seems DRDO has developed an ERA shaped panel for that missile guidance box.

the Green box which you have marked in red in front of the tank is the fire control for LAHAT Missile and the another Red block you have marked on the top is the sight for either commander gunner or the driver don't know exactly
the third block which you have marked in Pink is the anti mine detection kit which sends a sonar pulse to detect the landmines buried inside however it is modular where you can either replace it with mine plow or this kit

More hopefuls for the arty req.

DEFEXPO 2014: BAE Systems to display howitzer and 127-mm 54-caliber naval gun system

http://www.asianmilitaryreview.com/defe ... un-system/
BAE Systems participation at the eighth edition of DefExpo, the country’s premiere Land, Naval and Security Systems exhibition taking place here from February 6 through 9, is anchored in a single mantra – our continued commitment to partner with the Government in its journey of military modernization through technology and capability sharing with the domestic defence industrial base.
Their showcase this year is a broad span of state-of-the-art capabilities in towed and self-propelled Artillery and its Fire Control Systems, Naval Gun Systems, Ammunitions, Military Communications Systems, Geospatial Exploitation Products, Wheeled and Light Armoured Vehicles, and Helmet Mounted Displays.

Leading our participation in this biennial show are John Brosnan, Managing Director, South East Asia & India and Mark Simpkins, Vice President and General Manager for India.

John Brosnan, Managing Director, South East Asia & India said, “DefExpo is a signature event for our Company and we are encouraged by the keen interest our displays receive. The platform is also significant in presenting us an excellent opportunity to progress discussions with partners for domestic co-development and co-production to fulfill our shared goal of indigenization.”

Center stage on our stand are the M777 ultra-light field howitzer and Mk45 Naval Gun system. We have been supporting discussions between the Governments of India and the United States for a potential Foreign Military Sale of this revolutionary howitzer that is highly portable by land, sea and air and features a minimal logistical footprint alongside maximum reliability. The Mk45 is the most compact 5-inch (127-mm) fully automated naval gun in the world with a successful and proven track record of service in the naval fleets of Australia, Denmark, Greece, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand and Turkey and is co-produced indigenously in South Korea and Japan.

Demonstrating the strength and expanse of our portfolio in artillery, the stand will have on display the Archer 155 mm FH 77 BW L52 self-propelled field howitzer that can operate autonomously in tandem with today’s command and control systems. Adding fire power will be the LEMUR Remotely-Controlled Weapon Systems (RCWS) and electro-optical sight for land and sea application. A wide range of munitions is on display including 120mm Tk HESH L31A7 and 120mm Tk Charge Propelling L3A2 amongst others.

The stand will have on display the Hawk 132 Advanced Jet Trainer, of which India is the largest operator with 123 aircraft ordered to date by the Indian Air Force (106) and the Indian Navy (17). The Indian Navy recently inducted the first batch of Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers, becoming the third naval operator of the Hawk along with the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy. BAeHAL, the engineering and business solutions services Joint Venture with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, will also be present.

Also on-stand will be the new Q-Warrior™ helmet-mounted display (HMD) for the dismounted soldier and Q-Sight™ HMD for the new-age pilot, both providing mission-critical situational awareness. Adding muscle will be the Striker Helmet for both fixed- and rotary-wing platforms. The display of the RG32 LTV and RG34 exhibits underlines BAE Systems’ flagship capabilities and technology in Light Armoured Vehicles for potential partnerships with the Indian industry.

Expert demonstration of Geospatial Exploitation Products (GXP) will be another highlight of our display.

Headquartered in New Delhi, BAE Systems has a six-decade long history in India. The Company has worked closely with the Government to establish an indigenous production capability at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer, which is in service with the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. In addition, the Company is developing a range of opportunities across the land, naval and the C4ISR sectors in collaboration with domestic industrial partners. The Company’s flagship Community Investment in Smile Foundation across eight rural and urban locations in seven states in India is commencing its second year of operations reaching primary education to 1,100 underprivileged children and delivering primary healthcare services to the doorsteps of over 20,000 underprivileged people in Bangalore.

Thank you. That diagram was taken from the internet as I was too lazy to draw one :-). The second red square is the housing for various sights of the RCWS system like laser range finder, CCD camera and thermal imager.

either the korea or japan MBT is said to have this kit for detecting the heavy 20kg tank busting mines efficiently.

That paint job on Arjun Mk.II robbed the tank of its professional look (IMO only). Especially in the close up pictures it makes the tank look like roadside Juggaad :(

I thinks TATAs have achieved TFTA Photo op quality with their images, paint job etc. Ashok Leyland is ok but not as TFTA as TATA vehicle paint jobs.

New interesting export OPV design from Goa shipyard.main gun + 8 SSMs,helo. No ASW weaponry visible in the pic of the model.

Incidentally, sev. analysts are of the opinion that our NOPVs/OPV designs have tremendous potential for upgradation with extra armament and would be very cost-effective to build.

Glossy paint doesn't suit defence equipment.. matte paint on the other hand is much better.
Same issue with this Howitzer from Kalyani.

IMHO, if they even reengineer the turret to move the GMS to the top, the protection all over the frontal arc will effectively become future proof to the extent they dont even have to upgrade the Kanchan modules for a long time. Flip side is all the optics will be on the turret roof and hence vulnerable to arty/gunfire from the side.

I visited DefExpo today and visited most of stalls. Few observations
1. Most Russians vendors had lot of stuff to display, however most of the representatives were hardly fluent in English and many brochures were in Russian too. Most seemed little interested in engaging in conversation. Except one lady from Bazalt who said its her 12th visit here and seemed very keen to tell.
2. In contrast most European were keen to talk. SAAB had kept a guy who was answering most basic questions from "mango people" with great enthusiasm. He kept on explaining to people non stop
3. DRDO too had great stuff to display. The people were very simple and ready to answer whatever they knew. Most importantly they even let people enter and see the look and feel of Arjun tank MK2 and the catapult. Honestly interiors didnt give a good impression. The seats didnt seem very comfortable(not sure if that is common, since I havent seen any tank either). The surface paint job or finishing didnt look great either

Ranjan, sadly that's a common complaint, OFB fit and finish in terms of aesthetics, of most of their items is pathetic. Arjun is made by them. The OFB tendency to put glossy paint everywhere by hand with visible splotches here, there and dripping is another negative as is their slipshod finishing. However, in terms of overall eqpt, these items are still a huge step up from the confined environs of the T series tanks, so that's a plus.In contrast, BEL, HAL items are made to a better quality as well.

Did you take any pics or brochures? If so, do put them up.
