At a Defexpo seminar here, Ambani said: “Despite a committed reformist mindset at the top, we are still seeing opportunities being denied to new players on grounds of lack of experience. This is the classic chicken-and-egg situation, where nobody wins. “In the vocabulary of combat, sir, it is a landmine or booby-trap laid by vested interests to kill competition.” Ambani, who has announced a slew of tie-ups with foreign players but is yet to get a contract, said sectors like automobiles to telecom and IT would not be the same as today if people had insisted on experience before letting them do business. “Existing mindset in the defence sector which holds past experience as the most important criterion for awarding work, needs to change to allow the private sector to take up its rightful role in enhancing national security,” he said. He added that no one will deny the importance of experience, but successful enterprise is built on a number of other variables which are even more critical: capability, competence, commitment, vision and risk-taking, among others. Citing the example of his father Dhirubhai Ambani, he said he was neither a chemical engineer nor a technologist nor did he have any prior experience in the oil and gas sector. “Yet sir, he created the world’s largest oil and gas business, the largest refinery, and the largest petro-chemical company in the world. Clearly, there would have been no Reliance in existence today if experience was the sole defining yardstick of entrepreneurial success,” he said.

Even the ones with experience making smaller components over decades did not get chance to make new things. So these newbies has to wait until they prove that they can make small things and that also in good quality and timely delivery. Experience in other areas never means you can just port it into defense. Not all such attempts are successful and will never be. Take the case of Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel won by Pipavav. No news about it. Better they invest their time and energy in delivering those than shout about lack of opportunities.

The "R" Co. have signed an agreement with Rafael of Israel for manufacture of AAMs,With Russia for ships, etc.,and past reports with other entities for manufacturing almost everything major for the armed forces. It is the most aggressive of all Indian cos. entering the defence field and with their huge political, financial and manpower resources will definitely swing a few major deals their way,in collaboration with the firang entities mentioned. It is going to be very difficult to stop the R Co. when it has tied up collaboration with the world's major OEMs who are already supplying their wares to us.

DRDO Displays MRSAM Unit at DEFEXPO.

The Indian Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) unveiled at Defexpo 2016 the fire unit of Medium Range Surface-to-Air (MRSAM) missile system, developed and manufactured for the Indian Air Force and Army. The development of this system, a land-based version of the Long-Range SAM (LRSAM) Barak-8 naval area defense system, was designed and developed by the DRDO and will be produced competitively by Larsen &Turbo and Tata Power SED, both private sector enterprises. The missiles, developed by Israel’s IAI and Rafael will be produced in India by Bharat Dynamics (BDL).

Three fire units will comprise a battery, self supported with target acquisition and communications. The fire unit comprises two stacks of four Barak-8 missiles, for a total of eight launch tubes. Stacks are reloaded separately, for rapid replenishment. The IAF plans to buy 60 fire units, with the Army buying additional lots to fulfill its requirement for medium range air defense.

DefExpo 2016: Trial awaits submarine-launched AUV.

Adamya, which means ‘impossible to subdue or defeat’ in Sanskrit, is the name of a new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from Indian firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

The AUV is being developed in-house, and the prototype on show at DefExpo will head off for sea trials soon after the exhibition in Goa has concluded.

The shape of the Adamya indicates that it has been designed to be launched from a submarine torpedo tube. L&T states this is ‘a pioneering feat globally.’ Evidently, the AUV can be launched from a surface vessel as well.

The prototype is a heavyweight version with 5.825m length and 533mm diameter, however, it can be scaled down to medium-weight and lightweight types in the future. The Indian Navy (IN) has a requirement for all three AUV types, with RfPs already having been issued.

The heavyweight version of Adamya has a 50kg payload capacity, which could accommodate such functions as a side-scan radar, encrypted communications device, mine countermeasure charge shot or high-capacity sonar. A modular design allows mission customisation by navy users.

L&T lists potential applications for the Adamya as: hydrographic survey, mine countermeasures, ISR, offshore survey, clandestine monitoring, environmental monitoring and anti-submarine warfare.

The 1,012kg prototype currently has a Tritech sonar with 300m range for trial purposes such as proving collision avoidance algorithms. Its depth rating is listed as 500m by L&T.

A spokesperson said L&T began development of the Adamya in late 2011. Buoyancy and pressure tests have been successfully completed at L&T’s facilities already. Development is expected to conclude midyear, after which time the IN will be invited to study its capabilities.

The Adamya has an eight-hour endurance at a speed of 4kt, powered by lithium-polymer batteries. Its maximum forward speed is stated as being 6kt.

If LRSAM/MRSAM could reutilize infra for Akash or vice versa, the. logistics could be handled better. Then we will truly have a S-300 level of missile complex with shared comm/search/tracking units being able to engage different targets at different depths using different missile types.

Our QRSAM/MRSAM/Akash/AAD/PAD systems should be independent as well as integrated as a unified system.

L&T's UUV has an endurance of only 8 hrs? DARPA/US are developing UUVs with endurance of months! 8hrs is simply too little.though one lauds the effort .

Er the months long ones probably recharge through solar power or are much larger.

Take a look here..51 foot behemoth size of a midget subhttp://www.upi.com/Business_News/Security-Indu ... 458052317/

Ask type diesel with snorkel may be used with batteries for diving...being slow and shallow diver it will not use much diesel

L&T's UUV are comparable to ATLAS ELEKTRONIKA SeaOtter.

Comparing it with an ongoing DARPA project is naive and asinine as they are targeted to be fully autonomous vehicle. Ours is RPV.

Its like comparing a Global Hawk and Predator.

The ones based on the REMUS 600 offer anywhere from 12 to 20 hours of endurance depending upon the mission and the sensor payload being deployed. Do away with the need to launch from a torpedo tube and you can go really fancy, and those are the ones that offer higher endurance such as the Large Displacement UUV (LDUUV) that does about 30 days. There you are essentially blurring the lines between a UUV and a mini-unmanned submarine. Endurance requirement is also mission specific. There may be plenty of missions where a 20 hour endurance is simply not required and is therefore a burden on both the organization developing it, and the operator paying for it. You can't however compare a torpedo tube launched, and submarine recovered UUV to a much larger ship launched UUV that is essentially a companion mini submarine.

It fits a torpedo tube, Philip.

Question is how will the submarine recover the UUV? A surface ship could send out a crew to fetch the floating device.

A tube lunched UUV will reduce the weaponry carried aboard, unless it is fired from the decoy tubes as in an SSN/Akula. Our Akula/Chakra had its extra tubes plated over when it arrived from pics.Ideally,strap-on packs would be best. Some subs have fixing devices atop the hull abaft of the sail for a special forces SDV module.Otherwise it becomes an expendable UUV.Here,if it is used to penetrate enemy harbour defences and used as a LR kamikaze torpedo,OK.If meant strictly for recce, then it has to be retrieved by the sub which may have to surface to do so.The French already have an LR torpedo that keeps on prosecuting the targeted sub for a few hours,as it might get fooled by some decoys.

Indo-French Surface-to-Air Missile Unveiled at Defexpo.

India and France are showcasing a static mock-up of a vertical-launch short-range surface-to-air missile (SRSAM) for naval applications at the MBDA stand at Defexpo.

India's state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and MBDA of France will jointly develop and build SRSAM systems in India to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy and other nations' navies.

SRSAM systems will replace the Indian Navy's Israeli Barak-1 air defense systems and its ageing Russian close-in weapon systems.

One DRDO scientist said the project is still awaiting the Indian government's blessing for final approval but declined to comment when the contract will be awarded.

Weighing around 100 kilograms, SRSAM is a Mach 3-class missile, has a range of 40 kilometers, is used for naval air defense applications and is launched vertically to provide 360-degree defense coverage.

Full SRSAM systems comprise missile launchers, radar sensors and combat management system .

SRSAM will sport a smokeless solid rocket motor, low-aspect ratio wings and jet vane control for thrust vector control. It also boasts a single shot kill probability (SSKP) of at least 70 percent for a single missile fired and 85 percent for a salvo shot involving two missiles.

In addition, the SRSAM system will be able to handle saturating attacks carried out simultaneously by threats ranging from fast-combat aircraft to supersonic sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles and UCAVs.

State-owned Bharat Dynamics will be the lead production agency, and around 50 private Indian companies will be prime and secondary suppliers.

A senior Ministry of Defence official said the country aims to produce as many as 10,000 missiles, which would provide jobs in India for at least 20 years.

Loïc Piedevache, MBDA's country head for India, said: "Over the last few years, we have set up a network of industry partners around the country that is already working not only on our ongoing Indian projects but is also making a significant contribution to our global supply chain. This network is ready to get to work on SRSAM, and first deliveries of this new generation defense capability to the Indian Navy could be taking place within three years, all we need is the go-ahead."

Piedevache said MBDA is prepared to share with India the cutting-edge technology the company has developed over decades for the Make in India initiative.

Thank you. One comment about L&Ts video editing dept. They have tried to make the video too short. It is high on animation but titles do not last long enough. Considering that this is not a TV ad where they are paying by the second they could have made it longer - like Israeli videos where they actually showed men and women dancing as a symbol of Israel protecting India
