Why didn't we just bite the bullet and walk out of the talks? Or -- wait -- were we waiting for an ECOSYSTEM of understanding to develop? Pfft.

I think the best way to press our case is to push ahead with our indigenous program. That way the Americans will see that the clock is ticking, with time on our side, not theirs.

How much would it take to built another Kalpakkam? Why can't we start work on 3 more Kalpakkams right now?
In strategic affairs one should let the other guy walk out. One should understand that the game is not just between the two but there is the audience too. By now its very clear that the US did do a bait and switch with the J18 and the Hyde Act. Only those who are wrapped up in their own hubris like Texmati wouldn't see it that way.

And how does one know if GOI isnt doing its best to shore up its cards in order to deliver the right message?
The mining has been pushed forward in Andhra Pradesh. The helicopter deal was squashed. The Bofors was de-selected. Next it will be the MRCA.

Well put.

Its easier to build political consensus in your position's favor both inside and outside the country if you're the 'wronged party' aka victim of injustice etc. H&D inspired walking out is a short term ego-boost and a longterm albatross round the neck etc.

Totally agree. There're also other signals coming up such as Sagarika, the the ATV talk, the Israeli Barak deal, extended Agni etc.

Injecting AK directly into the talks is another clear signal that the deal has hit a 'sh1t or get off the loo' stage. Again, IMHO, bringing AK in means that GOI has decided the deal is as good as 99% dead and we're doing our utmost not to ignore the 1% hope also. We can come back empty handed and talk about all our reasonable proposals etc and go ahead with our pre J18 plan anyways.

JMTs etc.
