Slavery And South Asian History

Indrani Chatterjee, Richard M. Eaton

Despite its pervasive presence in the South Asian past, slavery is largely overlooked in the region's historiography, in part because the forms of bondage in question did not always fit models based on plantation slavery in the Atlantic world. This important volume will contribute to a rethinking of slavery in world history, and even the category of slavery itself. Most slaves in South Asia were not agricultural laborers, but military or domestic workers, and the latter were overwhelmingly women and children. Individuals might become slaves at birth or through capture, sale by relatives, indenture, or as a result of accusations of criminality or inappropriate sexual behavior. For centuries, trade in slaves linked South Asia with Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The contributors to this collection of original essays describe a wide range of sites and contexts covering more than a thousand years, foregrounding the life stories of individual slaves wherever possible.

Contributors are Daud Ali, Indrani Chatterjee, Richard M. Eaton, Michael H. Fisher, Sumit Guha, Peter Jackson, Sunil Kumar, Avril A. Powell, Ramya Sreenivasan, Sylvia Vatuk, and Timothy Walker.

Hitler's Priestess: Savitri Devi, the Hindu-Aryan Myth, and Neo-Nazism

The whole terrible Nazi experience had many oddities, and this relatively unknown woman is one of them. Born in France in 1905 as Maximiani Portas, she became a strong admirer of Hitler in the 1920s, moved to India in 1932 because of its caste system, and took a Hindu name. After the war she traveled through a devastated Europe and was a vocal apologist of the Nazis, their horrific atrocities notwithstanding. Her early writings were republished by far-right-wing publishers, and she gained new fans in the 1970s as neo-Nazism spread. Devi died in 1982, but the author writes that her combination of Hindu religion and Nordic racial ideology became "a bridge between neo-Nazism and the New Age" movements. (For more on this subject, see also Goodrick-Clarke's The Occult Roots of Nazism: Secret Aryan Cults and Their Influence on Nazi Ideology, New York Univ., 1992). This work will be useful for understanding the ideological background of the neo-Nazis. Suitable, but not essential, for all academic and large public libraries...

Stalin's Letters to Molotov: 1925-1936 (Annals of Communism Series)

These letters from Stalin to his trusted friend and political colleague Molotov constitute a unique historical record of Stalin`s thinking - both personal and political - during a dramatic period of transformation in the Soviet Union. They throw valuable light on the way he controlled the government, plotted the overthrow of his enemies, and imagined the future. Formerly housed in Soviet archives, this top secret correspondence is now available to the public for the first time.

This isn't an E-Book per se, but it is a compilation of pretty much all the Upanishads (major and minor) plus a few miscellaneous books like the several Gitas besides the Bhagavad Gita, works by Advaita saints like Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadutta Maharaj, and Shankara himself, as well the Bhakti and Brahma Sutras.

They did have the works of the famous Advaitain/Bhaktin (contradictory to some) Madhusudhana Saraswati who supposedly met Birbal once and is considered to be the founder of the Naga Sadhus. I don't know what happened to it though.

Have fun reading.

American Evangelicals and the U.S. Military 1942-1993
Publisher: Louisiana State University Press | ISBN: 080712091X | edition 1997 | CHM | 376 pages | 1,04 mb

This book is a thoroughly researched work on the secretive, appalling influence and pervasiveness of the religious Far Right within the military, and the power that fundamentalist world view has on every aspect of the military. Loveland traces the origins and growth of the spreading cancer which even today is so secretive most non-believers are unaware of it. The degree of control over policy and even strategy is frightening. No one concerned about the military or even state of democracy in this country can afford to miss this book.

Tilakji, Thanks for the e-book scan. While we read it we should remember this is not complete picture. We need to wait for US archinves to be de-classifed and their links to the INC made public. One fascinating vignette is by Marsahll Windmiller's article in Journal of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence where he writes about the cultivation of INC leaders during the freedom struggle despite the British bans on US ops during WWII, in order to hedge for a post Independent India.

You are Welcome Ramana garu and thanks for the addtl. info..

BTW. It would be great if people drop the "Ji", when addressing me - I have observed it in a couple of threads (from RahulM and others) but couldn't take it up then. Better late than Never. :)

Also to hedge against the Soviet influence inside India.

The US used several religious organization to penetrate India and Indian state. Anand margi is one such group which keeps a watch on the communist WB
