in true congi style, Gogoi trying to weasel out of resigning. I want him to stay in charge actually until 2016 assembly elections, disgruntled MLAs might start deserting the ship.
It is a bit more complicated than that. He wanted to hand over the Kingdom of Assam to his family, ideally his son in 2016. But this defeat has thrown a wrench in his plans. Also, three of his opponents (Rakibul Hussain, Gautam Roy and Himanta Biswa Sarma) are very happy that he has failed and fallen. Expect the knives to be out in the next few weeks. Gogoi family chances for 2016 are toast, anyway. So, between now and June 2016 we are going to see a lot of infighting, now that the high command has weakened, and his opponents have a credible alternate choice to go (BJP) to if the going gets tough in Congress.

^^^Is the loss of the Congress in upper Assam a result of Ahom elitemen switching votes to BJP due to the nepotism of the Chief Minister. Upper Assam BTW has always been a Congress stronghold and is not really a place where minority issues are important.

er there is another mainority there called 'tea tribes' who were strongly with INC earlier. these were ppl from central india the british imported to work in tea gardens nearly a century ago. now they both work in gardens but the younger gen has moved out and joined the mainstream for all jobs. now the state BJP might have made inroads there and cut the legs off the INC in upper assam.

any place with has youth and aspirations beyond a mere dole type existence is now fertile hunting ground for BJPs development message.

the AGP is long dead, in the last election the AUDF of badruddin ajmal got some 18 MLAs to be the 2nd largest party, not the AGP. their vote share overall is around 12% officially. so clearly the musalmans of BD origin have found their patron party.

Trinamool MP heckled at Lake
KOLKATA: With Bengal's political fault lines exposed in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, think twice before you make that high pitched political rhetoric. A Lake morning-walker learnt it the hard way when an unguarded statement on what prompted BJP's rise in Bengal seemed to irk a fellow morning-walker. What he didn't realize is that the man who heard it was none other than a newly-elected Trinamool MP.

"They were all BJP supporters," said the MP. "A group of people were generally discussing the sudden rise of BJP in Kolkata. One argued that perhaps chief minister Mamata Banerjee's repeated statements on minorities divided voters on religious lines," said a witness. This angered the MP. "I objected to it," he said.

But according to sources, "the MP spoke very aggressively and shoved around, which infuriated people". Around 50-60 people then gheraoed the MP and forced him to leave the place. They also took him to the makeshift police camp outside the Lake. "They nearly assaulted me. I left the place on my own," the MP alleged.

The MP, it is learnt, informed Lalbazar. Police later made inquiries at the Lake.

To beat Kejriwal, we need Kiran Bedi to show him his place. She has an administrative and principled track record both in public service and social service that Kejri cannot hope to match. She is a civil society animal just like Kejriwal but with real qualifications, not manufactured ones. Plus she is very much a Delhiite and is universally respected and admired.

This MP from Srirampur is quite well known for his rude behaviour. There is an inside joke within TMC itself that anyone who has interacted with this person even once would not make the mistake of voting him ever again. :rotfl:

Agreed. But KB shouldnt be given CM position directly for she didn't "make up her mind" when it was meant to be.
CM position should be given to Political person, not some Babu(ni)/technocrat.

Nothing wrong. It'll help Modi to slap TSP hard if it misbehaves. And, if the pseudo-seculars in Bharat & international pseudo-moral brigade howl too much then Modi can point to the fact that it's him who extended the hand of friendship first, and won't shy away to do what is good for Bharat's interest.

Better to have some credit in own account to begin with. it is just fine to show benign good gestures in time of peace. It is equally important to weild the stick in troubled time which I hope Modi will do.

I agree with this assessment. However if somebody can be blackmailed once, it can happen again as well.

Still I think meanwhile Kiran Bedi is a Delhi institution and she would be a formidable Astra in Modi's hand to neutralize AAP appeal among the middle classes. I believe she is a Punjabi and a little more Punjabi in BJP would do it good.

Smriti Irani is an Astra already used up by NaMo in Amethi. Now NaMo needs to give Smriti Irani a rest and charge up the Astra to full again.

With Kiran Bedi in BJP, NaMo would not need to deal with Kejriwal ever again!

Predicted 317 for NDA and 285 for BJP. Slight over prediction on BJP tally and under prediction on NDA. Can be ignored as standard error margin. This was a week before election. It became slightly better towards polling day.

Only niggle i have with KB is : She too is a recipient of Ramon Magsaysay award.
So possibility exists that at some point of time like Khujli she was groomed/or atleast pinged for a role.

Her involvement in IAC along with Khujli etal , then her dissociation to khujli then her support to NaMo since September '13 in twitterosphere are the sequence of events.

Either Modi camp have unquestionably "turned" her to their side or she still remains a covert.

The True Face Of Kiran Bedi by Subir Ghosh

The public image of Kiran Bedi remains as spotless even now. So, when today she talks of corruption, hers is perceived to be an authoritative voice on the issue. But if corruption is to be seen as an abuse of power, Bedi herself would have to stand guilty.

Bedi would often ruffle feathers when she was posted in Delhi. Usually, these were either that of politicians or senior officers. But in Mizoram she crossed the line – it were the people of the state who took to the streets in anger. The widespread protests in 1992 were over her daughter’s admission to Delhi’s Lady Hardinge College for an MBBS course through the Mizoram quota. Aizawl had not seen so many people on the roads since 1986 when the Mizo National Front (MNF) was welcome backed by Mizos. That had been a celebration, this was a cause célèbre.

The upright police officer, posted in Mizoram as Deputy Inspector General (Range), thought discretion was certainly the better part of valour – and fled. This she did in the wee hours of one day, and without even informing her superiors. Her daughter’s admission, of course, was not scuttled. It’s a different matter altogether that the daughter never completed her MBBS studies, and instead flew over to the United States for a journalism course.

What Bedi did in Mizoram was exploit a loophole in the law. Northeast quotas exist essentially to ensure that at least some youngsters from the region get the chance to study in good educational institutions elsewhere in the country. These quotas are often seen to be a mired in controversies and corruption – Bedi made the best use of it. And never apologised or admitted.

Select justifications came, but from Bedi apologists. The ruse offered was that since she was posted in Mizoram at the time, this made her daughter eligible for an admission by reservation. What they never told us was that this was precisely the official flaw in the law that Bedi used to her own personal advantage. There is something called the letter of the law, and there is the spirit of the law. Bedi was someone who cocked a snook at the latter.

The ruckus in Aizawl did not make headlines in mainland India – it was by and large related to single columns and briefs in newspapers. Bedi’s image remained untarnished.

The Mizoram incident, however, is not one blemish in an otherwise squeaky clean career. There are many other skeletons in Bedi’s closet. The media, as a rule of the thumb, does not dig dirt about its own darlings. But uncomfortable questions over her self-professed “outstanding record” were posed by some journalists after she quit from the services in 2007.

Karan Thapar invited her to his television show. Bedi initially accepted, subsequently reconfirmed, and then pulled out without a convincing explanation. Thapar later published the questions he wanted to ask in his column:

1. To begin with, you’ve received neither the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service nor the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Given that these are routinely awarded after completing a certain number of years of service, isn’t your not getting them proof that your record is neither meritorious nor distinguished?

2. Secondly, is it true that on 4 separate occasions you failed to complete your tenure and at least twice left your post without permission which is tantamount to desertion of duty? (She didn’t complete her tenure as Superintendent of Police in Goa, DIG (Range) in Mizoram, Inspector General (Prisons) Tihar Jail and Inspector General of Police in Chandigarh. The posts that she left without permission were Goa, in 1983, and Mizoram, in 1992. Speaking to the Sunday Observer on the 27th September, 1992, she said of Mizoram: “I left without asking”. Her letter of 25th January,1984 to the Inspector General of Police in Goa, Mr Rajendra Mohan, establishes that she left on leave that had not been sanctioned.)

3. Let’s examine your conduct in some of the critical posts you’ve held. Is it not a fact that as DIG (Range) in Mizoram the Governor issued a formal note of displeasure against you for leaking information to the press?

4. Is it true that when President Venkatraman visited Mizoram the Governor became aware of your plans to disrupt the visit and informed the Intelligence Bureau that you could not be trusted with classified information and security? Again, this is said to be part of your service record.

5. Now let’s come to Chandigarh, where you were Inspector General for 41 days. Is it not true that the Adviser to the Administrator wrote to the Home Ministry to ask for your removal on the grounds that your presence in Chandigarh was “not in public interest”? (In her authorised biography ‘I Dare!’, its claimed Mrs Bedi asked to be posted out of the city. However, UNI, on the 18th May 1999 claims: “In a sudden move, the Union Home Ministry today transferred Chandigarh Inspector General of Police Kiran Bedi with immediate effect.”)

6. You were accused of instigating junior police officers to defy the administration because you disagreed with certain suspension orders issued at the time. The press said you were “sowing seeds of rebellion”.

7. In 1988 you were a central figure during the lawyers strike of that year. Even your authorized biography admits that the Wadhwa Commission, which investigated the matter, “found fault with Kiran”. The press has claimed he called you “a chronic liar”.

8. I put it to you, Mrs Bedi, that far from “an outstanding record”, your service record is good reason why you don’t deserve to be Police Commissioner?

9. In fact, if your service record was so good, wouldn’t the Lt. Governor, Tejinder Khanna, whose Special Secretary you were during his first tenure, have insisted on your appointment as Police Commissioner? The fact that he didn’t shows that he too thinks you are not fit for the job.

10. Finally, you’ve said Dadwal’s appointment was wrong not just because your merit was overlooked but also your seniority. But if you don’t deserve the job on merit should you get it because of seniority?

Pankaj Vohra too took Bedi to task. Among other things, he wrote about this curious incident of the scuffle between lawyers and policemen. Vohra wrote in Hindustan Times:

As DCP North in 1988, she got into a major problem with Tis Hazari lawyers. A committee headed by Justice DP Wadhwa, then a sitting Judge of the Delhi High Court, passed severe strictures against her. The report virtually established that Bedi had hatched a conspiracy along with a Congress corporator and also used some criminals so that they, with a mob, could attack the lawyers demanding her ouster. Justice Wadhwa, who later became a Supreme Court Judge, also questioned her credentials and raised doubts about her integrity.

The report was later presented in Parliament with an assurance to the lawyers who went on a 99-day strike that she will never be posted in the capital in any important position. Justice Wadhwa’s report also has observations which show how her proximity with the then Home Minister, Buta Singh, helped bail her out. Curiously, the report is not traceable in the Home Ministry anymore. Bedi, after that, was never allowed to hold a field posting and was never made additional or joint commissioner of either the Range or Traffic.

So, the report went missing, eh? Sounds suspiciously like the same kind of corruption that the Hazare-led agitationists are talking about.

Sure, no one is perfect. And people should indeed get a second chance to redeem themselves. But this always comes with a pre-condition: admit your sins first, and then atone for them. Kiran Bedi has not done any of that. To exonerate Bedi for her transgressions would be nothing short of self-indulgence. Meanwhile, you can choose to remember what you want about her
General (Retd.) Shri V.K. Singh joined BJP last year, while kiran bedi didn't take the risk while not knowing the risks involved and how true NaMo wave was. Now when its sure and certain that Delhi will vote for BJP for state elections too, like a spineless oppurtunist she wants to jump on the ship.

Plus sickular force under kejri and karan thapar will raise above 10 questions raised by thapar against KB.

+1. As far as I know Kiran Bedi has more appeal among the Delhiites than the other BJP members given that they just played Congress B team in the last 10 years. Harsh Vardhan would have that appeal but now he is an MP and it would be weird if he gave up that seat to contest Delhi again.

harsh vardhan was an mla when he contested for mp, why not make him a cm candidate?

Unless one rewards those who work for you, where would be the sense of loyalty if a rank outsider gets to take away the prize? How is it any different from high command CMs with no ground support.

What has KB done for BJP? does she have connect with BJP's grass root supporters who slaved on the roads to get out the vote? Where was KB when BJP could have used her help or the result was pretty uncertain? Now when the CM's chair is most probably BJPs as long as it doesnt do major mistakes, she who was living in AC rooms through out the campaigning when results were uncertain - now wants the CM chair and so should be given to her?

I would have accepted her candidature as based on ideology before dec elections or even before april, but now it is pure crass naked oppurtunism by her and BJP should keep such oppurtunists at arms length.

I am working for a multinational company and when a CEO is appointed, it is not necessarily from the current bunch of Heads of Departments. They get in a rank outsider, the reason being that the interest of the company should come first. Just to make myself clear, my first choice would go to Doctor sahab and 2nd would be Kiran Bedi. Smriti can come in the Modi's cabinet as a minister for women and children's welfare.

^^ If Dr HV is not part of the union cabinet then rest assured he is the CM candidate regardless of his MP election. However, the fact that he was given an MP ticket indicates to me a plan to make him union health minister all along.

Would be good to have KB immunize Dilli to the AAP virus. And spread the immunity around to neighboring Haryana, HP and if possible, Punjab.

If I quote JE M style, KB has her heart in right place but I doubt location of her mind.

To me her arguments many times lack logic and substance. Besides she is not a politician and she has no allegiance with BJP ideology. Can she take along all BJP MLA with her? We all know the result of not having politicians in key ministerial roles for past 10 years. Are we ready to have an independent minded bureaucrat as CM of a state?
