It seems there is no vegetarian food available for our athletes. They are surviving only on pizza and potatoes!

Where is the scumbag media now?

Gold and silver in Men's 77kg weightlifting, thanks to Sivalingam and Katulu. Sivalingam is a new star and lifted 328kg total, while Katulu won gold in Delhi 2010 and lifted 317kg this time. Sivalingam lifted a games record 149kg in snatch, and 179kg in C&J.

Interestingly, all of our women's lifters who have won medals are either 19 or 20 years old. The mens medalists are all between 21 and 25. AG standard is much higher in weightlifting, though. However, they'll clearly have trained so that they only peak in September. Sivalingam's performance would have earned him a silver in 77kg in the 2010 AG.

Some general observations:

1. The games web site is the worst I've seen.
2. Commentators are fairly Britain-istan biased - that's whenever I can understand the Scottish accents.
3. A lot of medals won by Australia/Canada are from 'immigrants of opportunity'. 5 of the 7 Golds of Canada were from a Gymnast with
dual Russia-Canada citizenship. There is another male medalist with a similar background.
The Aussie TT team are all Chinese born, their gold medalist weightlifter is from Cameroun (competed for Cameroun in an earlier games).
England has such examples too. If these cases are removed, there is a decline in medals won by the traditional Commonwealth powers
(while countries like India are improving).

Can't help adding that Pakistan, which won 10 medals at Manchester (since it was almost home) and 5 each in 2006 and 2010 have
won only a bronze this time (Judo) and limited chances of more.

Our athletes are polite to a fault. The games village is clearly sub par, but they're speaking diplomatically. Their Anglo counterparts would have fallen over themselves sneering if it was us providing such facilities:
Indians adjust to common bathrooms at CWG Village
The concerns arising over the outbreak of norovirus (stomach bug) outbreak at the Athletes' Village notwithstanding, the Indians have given a thumbs up to the hospitality offered by the Games' Organisers.

However, they would have preferred attached bathrooms like the ones built in Delhi four years ago.

"I think the Delhi Village was better planned and had more open space. But the overall quality of the Village is better here and the food is good. Here we also share the toilets but that has not been much of a problem so far," paddler A Sharath Kamal, a three-time gold winner in CWG, said.

His coach Bhawani Mukherjee gave a sneak peek into the Village built around 35 hectares comprising 6500 beds and 700 "future homes".

"We have flats here like huts but rooms are very small. We have two rooms on second floor, one four bed and the other two bed with a common bathroom. On first floor, two bathrooms and four rooms. It is a problem but we need to keep in mind it is an athletes village. The nice weather here makes up for the minor shortcomings," said Mukherjee.

Asked about reports of diarrhoea, the coach said: "We are doing fine. We are very careful of what we eat."

India's top squash player Saurav Ghosal said it would have been better to have attached bathrooms.

"Common bathrooms have been alright so far. Of course it would be better to have your own bathroom. In comparison to Delhi, I would say it is cleaner here," said Ghosal.

Interestingly, 260,000 items of furniture, fittings and equipment were obtained from the London Olympics Village for use here.
The only reason it was cleaner at Glasgow was it was completed earlier. The facilities themselves are poorly implemented, and the food has been dangerous.

The games website has been TERRIBLE. The organization of the data is piss poor. That would be bearable if they updated the damn data in real time. It isn't merely seconds late; they don't update for 1-2hrs. That's not even the design - it often starts showing a live score, which suddenly halts and stays in some intermediate score for an hour, by which time the match or event has long concluded, and one has to go to some other live feed source to find out what happened.

Delhi 2010 was WAY better.

interestingly scotland is competing separately from main ENG this time.
is it always that scotland, n.ireland and wales compete separately in OG also?
I know in FIFA WC they are separate thats why gareth bale never plays for england (he is welsh)

The 'home nations' (Eng, Wal, Sco, NI) always compete separately in the CWG, just as they do in football. These are, as far as I know (and I may be wrong) the only cases where they represent separately. Everywhere else, e.g. OG, they compete as Team GB. People from Northern Ireland can choose whether to represent GB or Ireland in OG.

Looking at our squad, we sent an understrength team, or people just didn't bother to compete in everything available. This is particularly pronounced in athletics, where some capable performers had not peaked in time for the CWG trials and did not make the cut.

Those who are participating have performed as well or better than 2010. We've exceeded 2010 performance in weightlifting and did as well as 1990 and 2002 combined, in judo. Our main medal events in shooting are yet to come, while boxing and wrestling events can add several more golds. 20+ golds would be a decent performance from this underprepared squad.

I don't think there are many more sports where Scotland can win golds, so we can overtake them and perhaps even Canada if they don't have enough imported paid athletes to get them the golds they need to make the #3 spot. Both of them have front loaded events here - rhythmic gymnastics for Canada, and judo for Scotland. The Scots were smart to bring back judo and train for it - more than half their medals seem to be from that event.

What is disappointing is the decline of Indian women's hockey. They won gold and silver in 2002 and 2006. Other disappointments are the loss in TT and badminton to England.

In 2002, when the women's hockey team won gold, they lost to NZ in group stages , and finished with a 1-1-1 record in group, and clawed their way to gold. This time, they again lost to NZ, but have matches against Trinidad and Tobago as well as S.Africa, both of which they could win. Thus it's too early to say.

TT and Badminton have both flattered to deceive, particularly because our top stars underperformed. Sharath Kamal lost his first match. Kashyap lost his match too. TT has 6 medals and badminton has 5. They better make amends elsewhere.

The bulk of our medal prospects - provided we perform - are in the next 4 days in shooting+boxing+wrestling . What we have so far is largely bonus performance in weightlifting and judo. We have slightly underperformed in shooting.

It is good if we are taking it easy in the CWG. We peaked in Delhi and then flopped in AG. Need the reverse this time.

We definitely seem to be doing so in badminton - all our players look like they're taking it slow to avoid injuries or worsening any. Saina didn't even bother to participate. I can't blame her. I would rather see her medal in AG and OG against the Chinese and Koreans, rather than just spank everyone in CWG and lose on the bigger stage. She has done her bit at CWG level - her last day gold in Delhi 2010 put us in 2nd place on the medal table ahead of Inglistanis.

Hours away from Commonwealth opening ceremony, Indians wait for costumes

With less than 24 hours to go for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, several members of the Indian contingent reportedly still haven't received their ceremonial dresses for the parade.

Some athletes are reportedly wondering whether they will be given the ceremonial dresses at all.

"We have just received the India blazer with Glasgow Commonwealth Games embossed on them. We should have got the dress before we left India," one athlete, a veteran of three Games was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

The Indian chef-de-mission - Raj Singh - meanwhile, conceded that there was some delay in the arrangement of ceremonial attire for the Indian contingent but said he was confident that all the athletes would get them in time.

"The IOA Committee to decide on this issue of ceremonial dress which included myself delayed a bit in taking a decision. But it is not an issue and all the athletes will get the ceremonial dress for the opening ceremony," Raj Singh told PTI.

"We have already given the sports kits, including track suits, shoes, bags etc. But I think some athletes are yet to get the ceremonial dress for the opening ceremony. But all of them will get the dress today."

He said men members will wear a black blazer, gray trouser and Hush Puppy shoes along with the traditional turban.

"Women athletes will wear saris and we have three sets of saris with us. We will decide which one will be used," he added.

With the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games just hours away, India are aiming for a top-three finish. India achieved unprecedented success in the last edition, amassing 101 medals to finish second. This time around the expectations have soared even higher.

The games website continues to suck with some sports being updated and others frozen. They don't even have separate youtube streams for different sports like the Olympics did. Instead of reusing the data management system from the Olympics, they only thing they reused is the furniture. Such incompetence.
