Your angst primarily comes from the fact BJP is playing this drama baazi; it is very similar to some other BRFites too.

There are about 5-6 BRFites, currently, who have voiced opinion against the flag hoisting giving so many reasons. Eventually, it all boils down to "BJP is doing this onlee" type of arguments. In fact Menon sahib said he would have welcomed if it was orchestrated by CPI instead of BJP, all the while arguing how it is insensitive ityadi.

And these very same posters have the audacity to hop on Ivory Pedestal and lecture how a political party - BJP - is playing politics. If it was not sad, it would be highly funny.

In a free free freeeeeeee country, one does not have to wear patriotism on the sleeve to show the love towards one's country. Heck, for that matter, in such an environment one does not have to love the country. Both love and hatred can be shown in various manners. Just because one does not stand up during national anthem or does not salute when the national flag is hoisted does not mean she or he does not love the country. The individual could be honest and hard working and pulling the country far ahead than say a person who just hoists flag and gives baashan. A person who hates the land in which she or he lives might do it for so many reasons, it is a natural human feeling to either feel part of something or do not feel part of something. We cannot force them to love or hate.

It matters little if Kashmiris hoist the flag themselves or not. What is important here is the fact that local and central governments are acting quite strangely. For crying out loud, BJP is not organizing a yatra that culminates in throwing pork into mosques (or for that matter beef into temple complexes). So it is not religious sentiments, but national sentiments.

I get it there are some people in J&K who are alienated for the right and wrong reasons. I also get it some times the Indian authorities do not handle the cases in evenhandedly. No doubt, many innocent lives have been lost. No doubt, it is a mind game, and GoI should win the hearts and minds of the people. But the situation has not been blown because of just domestic reasons; clearly there are evidences of Pakistan orchestrating lots of takleef. And this becomes a national issue that GoI must handle. And political parties in a democracy try to get their points across to the people in various manners. This is one such.

I would welcome the flag hoisting by INC, CPI, DMK, TDP, or others. This is an act by the country India, proclaiming and marking its territory. People arguing against BJP and "humans first, state next" are missing the important point or pushing it on the back burner. Because, the same people are saying only a minority of the Kashmiris are alienated. If that is the case why is the local and central authorities concerned so much? Is it because they do not want to give political points to BJP? If yes, then they are playing politics as well, no? If it is clearly not a small minority, then it means a lot of brain-washing and alienation has happened. Caused by both Indian and Pakistani operations. It makes sense to send a message to Pakistan that this is side of J&K is ours, no?

This is a National issue foremost.

Let me ask all those who oppose the flag hoisting. Are you ready for J&K to cede from India?

Unlike Neville Chamberlain's "Peace with honor" at Munich, MMS is trying for "Peace with dishonor!"

Munich was surrender to Nazi Hitler in order to buy peace. Just like the Munich this too will fail with its consequences.

In any forum, the number of active participants(who actually post) is far less than the number of passive participants(who only read). The number of lurkers, who are not even members could sometimes be equal or more than the number of participants. How do I know? Well few years back, I was helping a friend run a small, very small, discussion forum. As an admin I was privy to statistics.

But it is tough to over come anger at a particular post or member; if one does that, then there are lots of people one can influence with clam and collected writing.

So it has happened.

India has arrested all its opposition leaders and put them into jail. - once again.

British , Indira during emergency and Sonia now.

India is indeed democratic. Jai Ho, Jai Sonia. Jai Yuvraj. Jai MMS.

If only Soniaji could have shown this resolve when Pakistan flag was being flown.

Just dumped on j&J - Panjab border

This place is called Madhopur

We will enter J&K again

We did not come for a Satyagraha. We have come for Tiranga Yatra. Wont give up. Come what may.

I agree birather but the key is "deported", does not that sound a heavy word to be used. Hint hint: visa, immigration, leave to remain and borders! I wonder why is UPA government deporting people and not even ordinary ones at that within the national borders? Is there something more to it? :?:

I know that courts can sometimes "banish" citizens out of a city.

I have no idea under which constitution did they have the power to "banish/deport" citizens across states, especially when as yet they didnt break any law.

I will try Indian constitution - which I dont think will have. Can somebody try Pakistani/Soudi Arabian/ Chinese ones, to know which constitution India, oops MMS is actually following.

Ramanaji there are a lot of grey areas in things happening as of now. I am pretty sure anything said, done and committed now will come back to haunt a lot of folks. Especially the HM and its officers should have more equanimity when dealing with leaders of such stature. The real battle will now shift to parliament and judicial forums now. Suffice to say the public response in all states was more than good contrary to whatever stated by radia media. The UP response was especially heartening as per the "yatris".

Taza Khabar: Punjab BJP's Senior Most leader and Minister Manoranjan Kalia and Amritsar MP Navjot Sidhu received Mrs Swaraj and Mr Jaitley at madhopur amidst deafening roar of applause and slogans. It is midnight but the passions of the patriots were not subdued at all.

The BJP may be trying to make political capital from the flag issue but in the ultimate analysis the inability to fly my flagor sing the national anthem is disturbing. Of course we can give several legal arguments why we should not fly the flag but in the long run this could matter

Is there a 'Right to return" type organization for the KP. Someone that keeps track of them and then funds their return.

A corpus of Rs 5,000 crore or so would be plenty one would think to help get the majority back in with adequate security. Lets see the congress wallahs stop that.

Every KP wallah should give an undertaking to fly the flag from the roof of his new residence. Kinda risky for the KP, but this what we want, no.

Who is going to fund that? No one has such money. Besides its the UPA govt that protests the terrorists who harass the KP citizens.

-BTW the MHA meeting seems to be a stunt to show the Govt is doing something for the KPs in these charged times.

Forget about corpus-shorpus the Pandit organizations have made a demand since the early 1990s about a UT called "Panun Kashmir" comprising 10% of the valley by area and situated around Anantnag. "Panun Kashmir" means "Our Kashmir" in Kashiri language, give it to them with security or atleast with right to have their own police. They shall sing Vande Mataram and fly tricolor unfailingly for the rest of their lives. Their houses have been auctioned off, their jobs taken, prominent members of community bumped off and families of 4-8 forced to live in one room tenement ghettos of Jammu. Pathetic vista of ethnic cleansing this KP exodus was.

Pioneer summary of events
Panicky Omar detains BJP leaders
January 25, 2011 1:20:34 AM

Mohit Kandhari | Jammu

Sushma, Jaitley, Ananth made to sit on tarmac

Forcibly driven out of Jammu, dumped in Punjab

There was high drama in Jammu on Monday as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah resorted to extreme measures to thwart the BJP’s Rashtriya Ekta Yatra. First, the State Government held up top BJP leaders who flew in from Delhi — including Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar — on the tarmac itself for six hours. Later, they were taken into custody.

The three leaders were taken to Madhopur in Punjab, where the yatra will reach on Tuesday. They will address a rally at Pathankot before leaving for Lakhanpur again. More than 500 BJYM activists were also taken into preventive custody from Vijaypur railway station.

BJP State president Shamsher Singh Manhas reacted sharply and appealed to the people of Jammu and all nationalist citizens to come forward in large numbers to attend the Rashtriya Ekta Yatra at 10:00 am at Parade Ground, Jammu.

Manhas has urged people to defy restrictions by the administration and peacefully assemble at Parade Ground for a show of strength in favour of nationalist forces and to protest against repressive measures unleashed by the Government.

The three senior BJP leaders arrived here by a chartered flight only to be served an order by the District Magistrate, informing them of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.

As they were prevented from stepping out of their aircraft, a high-voltage scene unfolded there. The beleaguered Chief Minister, under instructions from the Centre, found himself in a fix as the BJP leaders decided to stage a dharna on the tarmac.

The BJP leaders were even prevented from stepping inside the airport terminal by senior State Government officials, led by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Inspector General of Police and District Magistrate.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj tweeted from inside Jammu airport on the harsh treatment meted out to them by the officials.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley argued that the State Government could not use Section 144 against his colleagues and him since it bans the gathering of more than four people  and cannot apply to prohibiting entry.

Outside the airport, several State BJP leaders, led by Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, blocked the exit gate. A large number of supporters staged a dharna, demanding release of the three senior BJP leaders from inside Jammu airport.

Shouting patriotic slogans, they alleged that the Omar Abdullah-dispensation had been using repressive measures to stop their Tiranga Yatra. After over two-hour long dharna the State police took them in to preventive custody and forcefully lifted the dharna from outside the airport gate.

{So what law was used? I mean which section of the CrPC? And what law allows them to take a person from one place and deliver /dump them elsewhere? Isn't that called kidnapping? A judge can deport people or issue prohibitory orders.}

As pressure mounted on the state administration Union Home Minister P Chidambaram stepped in to broker a peace deal from New Delhi. He spoke to Jaitley but failed to break the impasse.

Meanwhile, to prevent entry of Rashtriya Ekta Yatra via Punjab border inside the state borders the Omar government has made elaborate security arrangements along the 90-km national highway between Lakhanpur and Jammu.

The multi lane entry point at Lakhanpur has been heavily barricaded and all types of anti-riot vehicles including water canons and grenade propellers have been deployed at various places to check assembly of BJP activists. The rally is expected to cross in to the state borders on Tuesday and the party is mobilising all its resources to put up a grand show before the yatra moves inside the state borders.

To curtail the yatra the entire police machinery in Jammu is on the look out for activists of BJYM already camping in Jammu to join the yatra. A large number of BJYM activists is scheduled to reach Jammu to join the yatra.

In New Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi held deliberations on Monday with senior party leaders Pranab Mukherjee, AK Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad. Her political secretary Ahmed Patel was also present.

Advani talks to PM

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Monday talked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to lodge a protest over developments which had “never happened” earlier. “I talked to the Prime Minister to register protest over the way authorities prevented Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, leaders of Opposition in two Houses of Parliament, from entering Jammu and threatened to deport them to Delhi,” said Advani.
I think a magistrate can do that in a court and not some sundry police guy under poltical orders.

I am willing to bet, if this was done by a NDA government, we would have desi writers in the West talking about the absence of freedom of speech, ability to peacefully congregate, fascism, right-wing-nationalistic party silencing other political parties. Probably it will come, but we might have to wait for those screaming articles. Sabar ka phal meeta hota hai.

This is almost like INC has been put on a war-mode. Only INC and Pakistan when pushed to complete backfoot, will even attempt to hit a straight six over mid-on. It is not J&K people who are sensitive, it is INC that is sensitive. Makes one wonder why.

Prem,
Now, now!

Meanwhile Tribune gives details of the forces being deployed.

Rashtriya Ekta Yatra: 30 CRPF companies deployed
Ravi Krishnan Khajuria
Tribune News Service

Jammu, January 23
The CRPF has deployed nearly 3,000 jawans across the state for manning vantage points on the Jammu-Kashmir National Highway in view of the BJP’s Rashtriya Ekta Yatra.

“ Till January 27, at least 30 companies of the CRPF will be deployed to maintain law and order,” sources in the CRPF told The Tribune.

The development took place after the state government approached the Centre, which, in turn, asked the CRPF to keep at least 30 companies at the disposal of the state police, they added.

“Out of the 30 companies of the CRPF, 20 have been deployed in the Kashmir valley, while 10 have been put on law and order duty in the Jammu region,” said the sources.

“Out of the 10 companies for the Jammu region, we have already deployed eight companies at Kathua and Lakhanpur-the gateway to the state from where the BJP’s Rashtriya Ekta Yatra will enter,” they further said. The remaining two companies had been deployed in the city.

Besides, the CRPF had also withdrawn six companies out of a total of 12 from deployment on the national highway.

The six companies have been sent to Udhampur, Ramban, Kud and Batote to maintain law and order till January 27,” said the sources.

“Our jawans will work in tandem with the state police to ensure that peace was not disturbed,” said a senior CRPF officer. Non-lethal weapons to quell mob violence had also been provided to the jawans, he added.
SwamyG, Very good observation. Most news reports emphasise that Omar Abduallah is acting on Center's directions. He is only the lightning rod and most likely fall guy if there is fallout. Its the 2G coterie that is running this show. Note the composition of those who meet in Delhi.

Says who? some of the tall leaders of the UPA have been implying that 26/11 was done by the Hindu fundamentalists.
The UPA has been trying to wean Kashmir away from the national psyche and has been preparing the groundwork to eventually gift it away to the beloved Pacquis( who are bigger victims of terror than we are).
By using subterfuge and heavy handed tactics, the UPA is doing exactly what the beleaguered BJP needed, lending them a life line.
The UPA has been rattled by the calm in the country in the wake of the historic Ayodhya verdict. While the BJP may not necessarily gain electorally due to the favourable verdict, the UPA seems to think that they will lose out on a sizeable chunk of the IM vote.
The UPA is giving a communal colour to what is essentially a nationalist movement, they aim to show the IM public that they are acting tough on Hindu nationalists. The crack down on the Ekta Yatra , recent pronouncements by Doggy Raja and the selective leaks on the ATS investigations should be seen in that light.

The Tribune => Based In Chandigarh + Raj Chengappa editor => Chandigarh is a UT => Shivraj Patil is administrator => UPA sarkar by proxy

I am not sure. It will involve a lot of blood shed.

Sensitive political issues offer only one means of dealing with them — with sense and sensitivity. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s aggressive and adamant stand on hoisting the Tricolour at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on the occasion of Republic Day betrays a dangerous inability to understand the subtlety and calibration needed in a place like Jammu and Kashmir. Following the arrests of members of the party’s youth wing, senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, along with Ananth Kumar, flew to Jammu where they were not allowed to exit the airport.
20-30 years ago, I never read such statements in Indian Newspapers. But, 20-30 years ago I had very limited access to newspapers - just the local English and vernacular dailies. No internet. The tone now suggests that Indian Media considers the state as disputed territory too (or at least it is different). I am not saying that there are no issues in the people's mind, but the tone of Indian Media over decades has changed. Just that Indian Media openly acknowledging the "facts". How long before Indian Media show J&K as disputed in the newspaper? Wouldn't this influence people?
