Eurofighter Seeks India as Industrial Partner for Production, Future Developments

Similar to the statements by the British Defence Minister.. Eurofighter Offers Technology Transfer; U.K. Rejects Naval Eurofighter Variant in Favor of F-35 JSF

--

Further adding my "valuable" one liner :-) Eurofighter's message seems to be a combination of Saab's and Boeing's offers, and they might very well be correct on lifecycle costs .. the only problem is you're dealing with four foreign offices / bureaucracies instead of one (it may still be easier than dealing with the Amreekans tho! :P )

India rejects US offer, to go for open bidding for Navy deal
India has turned down an American offer to supply 16 multirole helicopters (MRH) through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route for its Navy and decided to go for open competitive bidding for the multi-billion dollar deal.

The US Navy had offered the MH-60 'Romeo' to meet Navy's requirement for 16 MRH through an inter-governmental agreement but the proposal was rejected, Defence Ministry sources said.
Following the Indian government's decision, only two contenders American S-70 Bravo and European NH-90 remain in the fray to take part in the field evaluation trials, the sources said. The trials are expected to start after March this year.

Well it was Negi who brought the video to the attention of the forum - but I think we need to increase the hits that video gets from ~180 to 180,000. Could someone link it off Facebook please? I might copy it and put it on my own account.

Thanks. I think every politician should be made to listen both Puri's and GParthasarathy's lecture. GP's lecture appears as 3 part video once you finish playing Vice Admiral Puri's lecture. For everyone's convenience, I have also provided the links here.

KMW, Ashok Join to Produce Armored Vehicles
ABU DHABI - Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) has struck a deal with Ashok Leyland Defence Systems to partner in the development of armored vehicles for Indian and other markets.

The two companies used the IDEX defense show here to announce they have signed a memorandum of understanding covering armored wheeled vehicles, recovery vehicles, artillery and combat systems, bridge layers, and other similar vehicles.

Ashok is India's largest military truck supplier, with more than 60,000 of its Stallion machines helping power India's military logistics effort.

The Chennai-based company recently formed a new company, Ashok Leyland Defence Systems, to spearhead its special military vehicles effort.

Germany's KMW said it would provide technology and technical assistance to develop products for the Indian market.

Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Chairman V. Sumantran, said the "strategic partnership seeks to harness the formidable skills of both companies, namely, the technological bandwidth of KMW and our approach to innovations aimed at cost advantage."

The German armored vehicle company follows European rival Bae Systems into the Indian market. It recently formed a joint venture with automotive maker Mahindra & Mahindra to develop artillery systems and armored vehicles for the Indian market.

Russia launches Glonass satellite, a boost for India
Under a 2007 accord, Russia agreed to share the Glonass signal with India. India will be the only country to have access to the military segment of the Glonass system, which will enable the Indian military to greatly improve the accuracy of its land-, sea-, air and space-launched weapon systems.

At this stage GPS is more reliable then GLONASS , what they have launched is GLONASS-K which is new generation Glonass and its more of technology satellite to validate new systems in there , then sort of really help to get the full constellation , it would have been possible to get full glonass coverage but they screwed up the December launch.

Any ways it good to have a combined GPS/GLONASS receiver then to rely on any one sytem till such time we get our Navigation satellite ready ,we can add one more to the list then.

Sikorsky to make helicopters in India for local, overseas markets
“We are looking at manufacturing an indigenous helicopter by 2015-16. We already have the helicopters that are suitable for the Indian climate,” said Arvind Jeet Singh Walia, managing director (India and South Asia) at Sikorsky Aircraft. “We intend developing further technologies to cater to defence requirements for high-altitude and high-performance machines.”

US urges India to sign CISMOA to access to defence technology

as it will get access to advanced technology...

CISMOA clause is backfiring on US, as it is not able to realize full potential of the multi billion dollar deals with India.

‘We have to build capability to utilise offset credits'
The Hinduja group declared its intention of being a serious player in the promising Defence equipment business when it signed an MoU last month with a well-known German company, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, to collaborate in the development of advanced Defence systems. A new company, Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Ltd., has been created with flagship, Ashok Leyland, holding 26 per cent equity in it.
:
We talked to several partners and zeroed in on this prestigious German company, KMW. They are the Porsche of the Defence business. Very, very high-end products, high performance, but not very high volumes.

The NATO's main battle tank, the Leopard 2, is a KMW product. I had a ride in it and all I can is that it is staggering. It's a tank that drives like a sports car, no exaggeration.

They have other products like artillery, they have the Dingo which is an armoured personnel carrier, protected from mines, rocket propelled grenades… it can run over dunes at 80 km/hr. We are now developing a number of new products with them. The new company will expand its product range. Initially, we'll use some of the ALL facilities on loan but, eventually, we'll set up our own limited volume production for the specialised vehicles, including armoured vehicles. We've already started with some of the prototypes building at our plant near Sriperumbudur.

Don't want to be the resident english nazi, but its "trials" not "trails". See the word being frequently misused, both by DDM and BRFites, each confusing the other in an endless loop. :((

In another time and place this would be true. Unfortunately our inept planning has been overtaken by an urgent need to arm ourselves against an imminent double threat. Thankfully, if there's one thing politicians and babus fear more than losing their gaddis, its losing a war where both gaddis and dhotis are ripped off.

This same urgency will cause us to sign CISMOA soon, if not by that name then by another to provide a fig leaf for arming ourselves with American weapons against china.

Narshima Rao got us Su-30 to pump some air into dying lungs of Russian aviation industry.. wheel has taken a complete turn.. this time its MMS... and he won't let go this opportunity to feed unkil's worker.

This so called "partnership" is for us to loose and for the unkil to gain. But this is how partnerships are between unequal partners. We have to choose between a trembling merchant (europe), a growingly greedy old friend (russia) and a selfish unkil.

Only time can tell whether this is the one in which we are going to loose least.

Then what does one suppose GoI should do , we can't build everything in-house and that too in a short time frame with top-notch quality. The kind of threats India faces are unprecedented, as both Pak and China are nuke armed and TSP especially is increasingly representing a rabid dog with little fear of the inevitable death.

Imports are the only quick fix to our problem and deterrant to existing external threats. China was the no. 1 importer of arms not so long ago. So, I guess we will just have to be paitent while the Indian industry catches up (which it is desperatly trying to). Wrongs of half a century cannot be set right in a mere decade.

Good point Nihat!! Let us analyze it. What happened in the 90s after the collapse of the Soviet Union - spares were unavailable leading to purchases of spares from wherever possible and at whatever price charged. Result - decreased availability of all Soviet equipment. For the IAF - it led to increased loss of aircraft and sadly several pilots. What would you say about national security in this period? Did this embolden Pakistan about their chances in a Kargil type venture?

So then what did the import of all the Russian hardware acheive in the post-Soviet Union era?
The kind of threats India faces are unprecedented, as both Pak and China are nuke armed and TSP especially is increasingly representing a rabid dog with little fear of the inevitable death.
Are you advocating imports of conventional weapons to deter aggression from these nations? Conventional wisdom from the cold war indicates maintaining a nookiller deterrence (mutually assured destruction/deterrence). So your suggestion may not work? India needs to work at the Agnis to put up a convincing deterrent force. That will keep the Chinese and Pakistan in check.

We must increase purchase of local weapons - Akash, LCA, Arjuns, INSAS, Pinaka etc and build the SFC into a robust, visible strategic deterrent. Imports like the MRCA may not be necessary for that purpose.

India world's largest arms importer according to new SIPRI data on international arms transfers

The four largest importers of conventional weapons in 2006–10 are located in Asia: India (9 per cent of all imports), China (6 per cent), South Korea (6 per cent) and Pakistan (5 per cent). These states have imported, and will continue to take delivery of, a range of major conventional weapons, in particular combat aircraft and naval systems.

Lockheed in talks with BDL to produce missiles
Lockheed Martin India Private Limited managing director Jagmohan Singh said the company was looking forward to potential partnerships, including with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

Initially, it would go for production of anti-tank guided missiles, provided it gets clearances from the governments of the US and India. Singh was speaking on the sidelines of a defence and aerospace exhibition being organised here by the National Small Industries Corporation Limited and the Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises.

“We have sought approval of the US government and are hopeful of receiving it soon. After getting a go ahead from the Indian government, we will start working with local companies to get the production facilities here,” Singh said.
