From the above link.
The T/A-50 has achieved weapons certification for the Raytheon AGM-65 Maverick (above) air-to-ground and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, although it is not certificated to use the latest AIM-9X variant.
Does the weapons certification mean only safe release of weapons or does it also mean use of the weapon with radar targeting or guidance. In short is LCA r-73 certified...

Looks like a new variant of PS-90 i.e. PS-90A3 has been flight tested which meets AP-33, American FAR-33 and European JAR-33 regulations , wonder if this is a ETOPS rated engine , PS-90A2 is ETOPS 180 rather engine but has some hot parts from P&W and PS-90A3 looks like an attempt to make a PS-90A2 rated engine with all Russian sourced components

PS-90A3 Engine Certified for Flights
In January 2011 the aircraft engine PS-90A3 has been certified.

PS-90A3 is a modification of PS-90A2 which was certified in 2009. The new development of Perm Design Bureau has kept all the advantages of PS-90A2 regarding the baseline engine: higher jet pipe temperature margin, higher capacity of major components and improved autopilot system.

PS-90 has been certified in accordance with the Chapter 6 of airworthiness certification standards - 3 as it localizes the detachment of the shelf part of fan blade. The work is currently being done in Perm to reduce the weight of PS-90A2 fan body.

I do not see a indian civil aviation thread, so posting here.
Mahindra Aero and its first product
"We are hopeful of rolling-out our first indigenous small aircraft by March this year. But we should make sure that the aircraft is properly certified for airworthiness standards," Mahindra and Mahindra's President (Systech Sector), Hemant Luthra, said on the sidelines of an event here.

"We will provide the aircraft at a price at least 20 per cent lesser than a Cessna aircraft," Luthra said.
There is one other maker - XAir that makes microlights in Bengaluru. Looks like the Mahindra venture is a fantastic start to our own light aviation industry?

NASA's stardust on its way to comet tempel-1 encounter
Launched on Feb. 7, 1999, Stardust became the first spacecraft in history to collect samples from a comet (comet Wild 2), and return them to Earth for study. While its sample return capsule parachuted to Earth in January 2006, mission controllers were placing the still-viable spacecraft on a path that would allow NASA the opportunity to re-use the already-proven flight system if a target of opportunity presented itself.

Moscow. The Soviet Union’s all-female air regiments flew more than 30,000 missions and dropped 3,000 tons of bombs along the Eastern Front in World War II.
At home they were known as Stalin’s Falcons, but Terrified German Troops called them the Night Witches.

Rahul Ji,

This is a single engine effort. However, outside of the tail, there seems to be some commonality with the AMCA.

And, just for kicks:

Is it fair to expect the titanium aluminide in the 3D woven composite blade to be a single crystal?

yes,and its not necessary to have 3d blades be build of composite only,
ivchenko progress has 3d blades for one of its engine, saturn has 3d blades on burlak engine.

well i hope that our scientists are able to produce 3d composite or titanium blades too.

^^^ Thanks. I asked because there were some discussions on BR that CMCs might help a country mitigate the lack of single-crystal tech.
To be honest, I find it incredible that metal in the composite blade would be a single crystal in spite of the interactions with the woven composite material. But then I'm no expert, just aam junta.

UAE to purchase Predator UAV

Due to U.S. Government export restrictions, sales of all GA-ASI UAS had been limited to the U.S. Government, NATO, and other select allied nations. However, GA-ASI has recently expanded its aircraft portfolio to offer an export version of its flagship Predator UAS, Predator XP. Offering comparable ISR capabilities as Predator, Predator XP has been licensed by the U.S. Government to be proposed for sale to a broader customer base, including countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Arrow 2 missile defense successfully tested
Israel conducted a successful test of the Arrow 2 ballistic missile defense system off the coast of California early on Tuesday morning, when it destroyed a target simulating an Iranian ballistic missile.

It was the 18th test of the Arrow, and the second in which the modified Arrow 2 was tested in its entirety, along with the Green Pine radar manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries.

The test was conducted jointly by the IAF, the Defense Ministry’s Homa Missile Defense Agency and the US Missile Defense Agency. The Arrow is a project developed in cooperation by the IAI and Boeing.

The Arrow interceptor was launched at around 10:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time from a US Navy base along the California coast and intercepted a missile fired from a nearby navy vessel. Defense officials said the “enemy” missile impersonated a “future threat that Israel could one day face in the region.”

Russia to buy 1,000 helicopters by 2020
Russia's Defense Ministry announced plans on Thursday to buy 100 ships, over 600 aircraft and 1,000 helicopters under a 2011-2020 arms procurement program.

Russia will buy 10 complexes of new generation S-500 air defense systems, which will replace the S-400 systems currently used by the Russian troops, said First Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin, who is in charge of arms procurement.

Russia plans to purchase more than 100 helicopters this year, including Mi-26 Halo heavy transport helicopters, Mi-28 Night Hunters and Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters.

Russia's Defense Ministry submitted the 19 trillion ruble ($651 billion) arms procurement spending plan for 2011-2020 to the government in December. Some 80% of the funds will be spent on buying weapons and 10% will be spent on scientific research.

The official confirmed earlier reports that Russia will buy two Mistral ships from France, while two other models of the ships will be built under license in Russia.

Russia is planning to build eight strategic nuclear submarines by 2020 and equip them with Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles, which are expected to be put into service this year.

Russia also plans to develop new heavy ballistic missiles to replace Soviet-era SS-18 Satan and SS-20 Saber ICBMs, Popovkin said.

gorgeous Ka-52 Hokum ! IMO, the best looking helicopter in the whole wide world ! And having played the Apache Vs Hokum sim game, its a pleasure to fly as well (yes yes not the most realistic but the best us civvies can get), only issue is the side-mounted gun which requires the gunship to be moved around when the target is on the other side.

Russia plans $650bn defence spend up to 2020

In many ways this is the best news to come out of Russia. Need to see two things: if they buy the MiG-35 and how much they allocate for the 5th Gen effort.

Boeing Wins Pentagon Tanker Contract
Plans to replace the KC-135 began nearly a decade ago, when the Air Force initially considered leasing a fleet of Boeing 767s. That deal was blocked in part by Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.), who unearthed evidence of inappropriate dealings between Boeing and Air Force procurement officials. That led to the conviction of a senior Air Force official and a top Boeing executive for violating federal conflict-of-interest laws, and the lease plan was ultimately scrapped.

The Air Force subsequently launched a competitive procurement, awarding a contract in 2008 to a Northrop Grumman Corp. and EADS team. Boeing appealed to the Government Accountability Office, which overturned the award, citing "significant errors" in the management of the acquisition.

The current contest was also marred by a bureaucratic snafu. Last year, the Air Force disclosed that procurement officials had mistakenly sent discs with sensitive information to both companies. The Air Force dismissed two officials over the mistake, and said the clerical error didn't compromise the contest. Still, the incident led to an inquiry on Capitol Hill.

The leak of competitive information also raised concerns about a potential protest, although representatives of both firms said during the competition the Air Force had labored to conduct the competition by the book.
:rotfl: This is turning out to be USAF's Bofors purchase, except those KC135s still work!

Kartik I'd agree with ya (having also played enemy engaged 2) the Hokum was one word "lovely" also was my first experience of how it would feel like to hide behind a hill pop up shoot a Vihr and duck back down (wont go on too much about the game otherwise that nefarious bongali breaperi will send a hellphyr down where the sun doesnt shine) :((

Also I would agree that it is the best looking attack chopper out there....
The 2 seater Hokum/Alligator should have been included in the IAF trials IMHO.

Also beyond the gun not being able to swivel relatively speaking the 2 seater will have lesser armour compared to Apache or Havoc IMHO however compared to those two it'd definetely have a higher speed possibly more manouverability, higher payload?

Russia launches Glonass satellite, a boost for India
Under a 2007 accord, Russia agreed to share the Glonass signal with India. India will be the only country to have access to the military segment of the Glonass system, which will enable the Indian military to greatly improve the accuracy of its land-, sea-, air and space-launched weapon systems.
