In what looks like an article sponsored by the Army of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, lots of raving and ranting about India’s presence in Afghanistan .

The author, Asif Haroon Raja, though he fails to disclose the fact in the article, is a retired Brigadier General who served in the Army of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan:

Mike Mullen could be the next US Ambassador to Pakistan

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theenvoy/ ... ty-shuffle
With the impending retirement in the fall of Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff--who spent years cultivating a relationship with Pakistan's all-important Army chief of staff Gen. Ashraf Kayani--the Obama team is clearly thinking about how to preserve and manage the United States' relationship with the troubled South Asian nuclear power.

"Mullen has been working Gen. Kayani for years, and could be the best diplomat the U.S. has had there," a Pentagon correspondent notes.

This could be OT. Please bear with me. I was searching for a paper titled "Kashmir Dispute - Appropriate US Role" written by someone in US Army War College. It is mentioned here. I couldn't find it but found some other papers.

The China Factor in the India-Pakistan Conflict

BALANCING U.S. INTERESTS AMIDST THE INDIA AND PAKISTAN CONFLICT

This is surely OT here.

Why is there no demand for PR services?
...
Minister for Pak Railways Ghulam Ahmed Bilour said that an air-conditioned marriage coach, having capacity of 24 berths and one bedroom for married couples, had been introduced for general public in 2008. However, he added, it had been booked for only once since its inauguration!.

He is also author of such articles which have spulttered out of his musharraf
A famous Indian proverb about its mean mentality, “ooper say raam raam baghal main churri,” meaning outwardly very friendly but covertly the knife is always ready to stab, holds very true even today. Miliband on Pakistan
"On the one hand I say we should be engaging with Pakistan. On the other hand, I feel comfortable in speaking very plainly about the responsibilities that they have. It it's true that the LeT is developing global ambitions for its terrorism and its own capacity to do so, as well as regional ones, we have to be even more insistent on the need to roll up that infrastructure," Miliband said.

The LeT, through its front organisation, provides a huge amount of welfare and other civil society outfits, "but they move into the vacuum," he noted.

Miliband, who will be travelling to Pakistan next month, said the situation in the country is challenging.

"On the one hand, a civilian government may well last its full term in Pakistan, and be succeeded by other civilian governments. That is not to be sneezed at. That is a significant thing," he said.

"Secondly, one of the things that (former) President (Pervez) Musharraf did was to open up the media. If you want to think about the flowering of civil society, the opening of the media, both in the blogosphere and in print, is serious and good."

Miliband said one of the most chilling things he has heard in and read over the last few months is the idea that the US has a choice about whether or not to sever its links with Pakistan.

"Because if you think it's difficult, frustrating, innovating, dangerous dealing with Pakistan at the moment as a partner, try fulfilling your own interests in South Asia without Pakistan as a partner," he said.

"I believe it's very important that Pakistan understands what is expected of it, its responsibilities, but also has its rights respected as well. It is easy to say that in theory, but actually it's meaningful in practice."

Terrorist Safe Havens and Certain 'actors' in Pakistan, a Challenge: Pentagon
Continued presence of terrorist safe havens and role of certain "actors" in Pakistan remains a challenge in the war against terror, a US defence official has said.

"The concern about the role of safe havens in Pakistan and the role of actors in Pakistan, including the Haqqani Network, the Afghan Taliban who are located primarily, the leadership is located either in the south or in the north around Peshawar, that remains a significant challenge," a senior defense official said at a Pentagon briefing.

One of the keys is the fact that some of the people who are coming in to reintegrate were in Pakistan before, the official said adding that there was a recent ceremony in Kandahar where a group of about 40 or 50 Taliban fighters appear to have come in and reintegrated.

"So as we see more and more of the numbers are still small, but the numbers appear to be increasing, and that's the kind of thing that can mitigate against a risk of those existing safe havens. But it's still going to be a huge challenge."

In its report on 'Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan' submitted to the Congress, the Pentagon said there are significant hurdles to reaching the vision of pursuing a long-term US-Pakistani strategic partnership based on a foundation of "mutual interest, mutual respect, and mutual trust guides a whole-of-government, civilian-military effort."

"The history of US-Pakistani relations is fraught with negative perceptions on both sides, leading many in both countries to see the others' pursuit of strategic objectives as being driven by transitory national security interests," the report said.

I thought there was some consensus of not posting clickable links to Pakistani news portals, websites and blogs, as that just increases their visitor stream, and more importantly higher search engine ranking.

How about placing the url in a code tag instead! Then it will NOT be followed by the search engines, and anybody who is interested can simply copy and paste in the browser!

This need not be for all links! Simply those for Pakistani ones!

US to use Afghanistan as base for drone attacks in Pak
US is shifting its terror-killer drones from Pakistan to Afghanistan after Islamabad asked it to shut down UAV bases on its territory, but America has vowed to continue hitting militants based in Pakistan's tribal areas.Pakistan has asked CIA to remove its personnel from the Shamsi airbase, about 350 kms southwest of Baluchistan's capital Quetta, where some of the drones are based, 'New York Times' reported quoting senior American officials.

You can find reliable lifafa journos even in Washington, DC.

Here is David Ignatius again, who, as we know well, is famous for getting into an instant happy vibration mode the moment an ISI major presses a pink button in Pindi.

Will Pakistan erupt like Egypt?
What’s behind this dysfunctional relationship, and what, if anything, can be done to repair it? Is there a way to encourage greater Pakistani independence and confidence without rupturing ties with the United States?

Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani, the Pakistani army chief of staff, met last year with Richard Holbrooke, the late special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kiyani was carrying an underlined copy of Bob Woodward’s book “Obama’s Wars,” whose revelations included some sharp criticism of Pakistan by top U.S. officials. “Mr. Ambassador, can you tell me how this happened?” demanded Kiyani. :((

One way to bolster Pakistani sovereignty, short of such an uprising, would be for Pakistan to take a stronger role in ending a Taliban insurgency that is driving Washington and Islamabad nuts. A Pakistani intelligence official outlined to me a “framework for negotiations.” The Pakistanis would demand of Taliban groups with which they have contact — and yes, that includes the Haqqani network — that they meet U.S. requirements for a deal by rejecting al-Qaeda, halting fighting and accepting the Afghan constitution.

For Taliban groups that refuse this peace framework, says the Pakistani intelligence official, there will be “military therapy.”

ET reporting that Pk has 'finally' agreed to extend MFN status to India. Have things worsened so much in Pak in econ terms already?

In any case, we better demand hard currency upfront since resulting trade is going to be exports mostly from India only.

I am disappointed to see foul wordings on twitter, by those who may have some difference of opinion. Let us have constructive criticism.

Critics must know that I am not incharge of everything in Pakistan.

Hence, do not throw blame on me if there is a load shedding or decision by the court against Muktaran Mai.

Nation’s honor not to be traded for prosperity
“We believe in one army, one family and one nation and we will have to rise above personal interests and think for a strong Pakistan,” he asserted.
A prosperous Pakistan is in the interest of all …. we want to co exist peacefully with our neighbours,”
So, lets connect the dots in this circular argument here: Nations honor cannot be traded for prosperity. OK....and because we choose to prefer our honor over prosperity, we are not yet prosperous. However, because a prosperous pakistan is in the interest of all (and, not the other way around), you all (read: the rest of the world) must do everything to make us prosperous for your own good. If for your own good (read: security, safety, stability in the region) you need to trample on our sovereignity and honor, we will over charge you for it. This will bring in prosperity. However, nation's honor cannot be traded.... You get the gist?

Germany detains three 'Al-Qaeda members'
...
The daily Bild reported that the three were Germans of Moroccan origin from the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and were caught with "large amounts of explosives".
...
Bild identified them as Abdeladim K., Jamil S. and Ahmed Sh. and said K. and S. had been arrested in Duesseldorf overnight Thursday. Sh. was arrested in the nearby city of Bochum.

Abdeladim K., the group's apparent leader, was trained in an Islamist camp in Waziristan, the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, said the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. According to Der Spiegel magazine he had regular contacts with suspected Al-Qaeda leaders in the region.

One was expecting this from a paki. I wonder why it took this long:
IPL can be used to revive India-Pakistan relationship
A mixture of threats, lucrative returns, beggings, "we-are-good-enough-also" and imploring the Indians to be humanists/rationalists.
A former Sharjah Club opening batsman has called for the Indian Premier League to be used to revive the cricketing relationship between India and Pakistan.
"Pakistan players should be included in the IPL as prelude to the revival of India-Pakistan cricket series," said Nawaz
"Soon many Sri Lankan players will be leaving IPL to play for their country in England. The Indian cricket board should sportingly include a few good Pakistan players in their place.
"There is an abundance of good Twenty20 players in Pakistan who can lift the standard of the IPL.
"If India agrees to include Pakistan players in the IPL then UAE should offer to host some of the matches next year. With large numbers of fans from both countries there will be packed stadiums."
"India has unearthed many players through IPL and so other countries too should try and stage such an event," he said.
And, one final beg
"IPL is entertainment but it has contributed to the promotion of the game. It should remain free of politics."

Yeah right!
That is because Kiyani and the other powers that be and predecessors of yore, have already traded their honor for their prosperity.

It is only the abdul pakistani for whom that statement applies. He can go suck on his honor while he rapes his goats, kills his daughters for honor, he can go kill some Ahmediyas or Shia or christians, hindus and sikhs for his honor, and can kill other sunnis for being munafiqs.
Yeah right that restores all the honor.

Pakistan is only paying attention to its economy because it is falling behind in the arms race with India.

The reason they offer is very clear. They are scared of our armed forces' conventional modernization and will very much like to match it. You will hear endless arguments like this from pakistanis of all hue, and not one peep about improving the lot of the mango abdul or the ayesha.

And it is a little galling that GoI is throwing them the more trade and economic development lifeline.

I fervently hope that we don't end up giving milk to the snake and nursing it back to health so that it may go back to what it was doing with renewed vigour and strength.

I personally think that it is premature to trade openly with Pakistan and to throw them the trade and economic lifeline. They should be allowed to meet their fate. The people of that geographic location are living a lie and holding onto the Pakistan tag for H&D purposes. Let this artificial entity cease to exist, I believe the people of that land will heave a sigh of relief also.

Maulana,
These are only Geedar Bhabhkiyan by the two.
Pakistan will downhill ski when the US closes its fist to teach them a lesson, just like they have done a thousand times in the past. Kiyani is no martyr, he will GUBO like the rest of the COASs in the past.

The only difference this time around is that the aam abdul is really cursing the Army also. Things are really desperate in Pakistan, and people are cutting the bullshit and blaming the people who have done them in all these years - The Pak Fauj. The editorials are getting more and more critical of the army.

Daymond Davis episode has taught the pakistanis one thing. The US will huff and puff but will reach a settlement in the end. Kiyani senses that he can deliver Ombaba his 2012 win here, so they are bargaining hard.

From Yawn:

The Seraiki language is spoken in a belt stretching from Mianwali to Pakpattan and down across central and southern Punjab. However, the language is also spoken in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Bannu districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and in the upper Sindh districts abutting Punjab. A Seraiki province expansively drawn would be the largest province in the country, turning on its head the smaller-is-better argument for new provinces.

Moreover, since no province is ethnically homogenous — there are Pakhtuns in Balochistan, Balochis in Punjab and Seraiki speakers in upper Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — resolving claims to provincial status on the basis of ethnicity is a minefield of epic proportions.

UNHAPPINESS IN SOUTH PUNJAB

“A female teacher from Ranjanpur who is posted in Lahore has to travel by road for 14 hours. That’s plain injustice,” according to Sohail Warraich, an expert on Punjab politics. “The resources diverted to other parts of Punjab from the south can’t go on unopposed forever.”

Mr Warraich claimed that growing unhappiness in south Punjab was down to three factors. “One, the economic disparity has grown since the ’80s; it’s much more today than it’s ever been. Two, the rise of the PML-N, a party of the cities and central Punjab, is seen as a threat. And three, the PPP has raised it as an issue again.”

Protesters set ablaze three vehicles in Pakistan province
A strike was held on Saturday in Pakistan's southern Sindh province by nationalist parties protesting alleged irregularities in the house counting phase of the planned population census.

Markets remained closed in the interior of Sindh in a string of cities including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Jacobabad, Badin and shikarpur, reports said, and public transport was largely off the roads.

In Sindh's capital, Karachi, angry groups reportedly set three vehicles on fire in the city's Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gadap and Qasba Colony neighbourhoods. Police detained several people.

Sindhi nationalist groups are demanding that the house counting exercise be stopped and re-conducted under the supervision of the army to ensure transparency.
