Y I Patel

Check out the ribbons and devices on the guy behind the commando being decorated by LKA!

Shishir

I think that the one at the top is a 'Combat Diver' badge. The oval shaped badge - Kargil??
As to the red patch at the bottom- No idea. Can anyone confirm the same?

Y I Patel

Shishir, oval patch could also be COAS commendation. Red patch = Balidan! (para cdo badge)

Shishir

YIP, Thanks. Somehow it doesn't look the same.
Compare with this Balidan patch/badge..

Anyway, the assumption being he is a para-commando(SF) volunteer to the NSG(SF). Wow!!

Questions from member Vishak on email (he has lost his pwd) :D

1)Can u give me info on the type of bullet proof vests used by IA, NSG etc?

2)Do you know any sites, where good and dashing squadron logoes and badges are available (preferably Indian, Europe and former Soviet Union countries ones!).

Check out the ribbons and devices on the guy behind the commando being decorated by LKA!
Also note the 9 years long service medal, high altitude service medal, 50th independence anniversary medal and sainya seva medal (not too sure about this one though). I can't make out the remaining three ribbons.

Also check out the ribbons on the guy behind LKA's hand. I think I see a sena medal and poorvi star among them. This dude has hung around since '71!

Hmf... that picture is strange... I dont know about the Para SF badge... look at the picture (of the guy behind the awardee). See his cap badge. The insignia is neither Para nor NSG nor Para (SF)... it looks, rather, like either mahar or JAKLI, doesnt it? As for the other older gentleman between LKA and the awardee, he seems to be an officer, and a senior one, perhaps, by the looks of his cap insignia. It is then likely that he has been around since 71. This picture was a cool find!

The feller in the background (Right) also has a medal for service in a difficult area... and if that blue thing is a high altitude service medal then its possible he was at kargil with one of the JakLI bn's... he seems to have the kargil badge on him. I dont understand that red badge though. hmmm. Ah... seems to be wound medal on the elderly gentleman in the centre. Im not so sure though. The Poorvi star on him seems to be higher up than the wound medal, and that doesnt tally with the order of presedence, unless hes from the navy. quite sure its a wound medal. How very odd. He also seems to have teh paschimi star. Maybe he served on both fronts. I could be wrong guys, because the order of precedence thing is throwing me off. Maybe he is from the navy? No.. No... yeesh... the last medal is beginning to look a bit like a 50th indpendence medal I guess. Well, maybe that isnt a wound medal then.
Sorry for all the confusion.. Im writing as I look at the picture. It seems the elderly chap has a samanya seva medal, a poorvi star, a paschimi star, in that order on the top row. Ah... the guy on the right has a samanya seva medal also, I believe.

My 0.02 ...

I'm almost certain the "oval badges" are the COAS's commendations.

About wearing both the Poorvi Star and the Pashchimi Star -- I can't personally swear to this in respect of Army personnel, but I know some Air Force personnel who received both. So it's certainly possible. A lot of Canberra aircrew served on both fronts in '71, as did some ground staff from special disciplines (Intelligence, Photo Interpretation); and towards the end of the shooting several of the units based in the East when the shooting started were in the process of moving, or had just completed a move, to the West. Those who made it in time to make a trip or two would have received both campaign stars.

My only quibble would be that there are not many people left in uniform today, particularly in physically demanding roles such as SF, who would have been in service in '71.

About the possible Wound Medal on the officer in the middle -- I don't think it is, to be honest. With the utmost respect to what people wearing his uniform do, I just can't imagine there would be so many ribbons ahead of the Wound Medal on his chest!!

Great find, and great insights, btw!!

the Oval badge is definitely the COAS commendation. and the Diver badge is unmistakable

If thats the balidan badge, then its the first time i am seeing it being worn on the LEFT pocket. usually the balidan dagger is worn on the RIGHT pocket. It must be something else. A sniper badge maybe?

I can make out the Op Vijay medal ribbon (or is it vijay star?) , the High altitude and a videsh seva medal.

coming to the officer in the middle:

He does not have the Sena medal or the Wound medal anywhere. the highest hes wearing is what is the General Service medal. most likely awarded for COIN posting in Nagaland, mizoram.

Hi Sree...

Good points about the two fronts. Yeah I know what you mean about the physical nature of the NSG, but then, he could easily be a senior deputationist officer involved in planning and so forth, rather than execution. I know that officers of the rank of major general work in the NSG, and they certainly wont be up for leaping out of helicopters and so forth. If youll notice, the DG RS Mooshasahary is on the left, and is also wearing an NSG uniform.

JB Asher: Yes, youre right. No Sena Medal, for sure, and no wound medal either. The highest medal is the Samanya Seva Medal, which, as you say is the General Service Medal, in a way. The general Service medale as replaced by the samanya seva medal in 1965. Does anyone know what the medals in the bottom row are? Im leaning towards thinking taht theyre the 25th, 50th independence anniversary medals, and longe service medals of sorts.

They are the 25th Anniv medal and the 50th Anniv medal.

You know what else is unusual?

The bloke has been around since 1971 and he is not wearing his 9 years service, 20 years service or 30 years service medal.

Highly irregular I say! :rotfl:

Yes! I did wonder about it! Left me quite quite puzzled! Maybe hes from the BSF or something... wherein those medals arent awarded. NSG does recieve deputationists from everywhere after all. He couldve been an ex army officer who moved to BSF. But not too likely. quite strange!

Gentlemen, the patch on the left side pocket is a special badge created for the NSG. It seems similar to the balidan badge but it is different and is always worn on the left pocket.
I have seen a air force officer, who served with NSG, wear a similar badge. It has a trishul emblazonned on it wheras the balidan badge has a dagger etc.

Apologies for nitpicking . Its not just the Canberra crew who have the privilage of dual campaign Medals of Poorvi and Pashimi Stars. But also one Sukhoi Squadron, one Hunter Squadron, One MiG-21 Squadron and half a dozen Transport Squadrons which flew sorties on both fronts. So there must be quite a bunch of folks with twin campaign medals.

Here's a nice website from BR's military links that is relevant to this thread -

http://faculty.winthrop.edu/haynese/india/medals/indmed.html

Added Later -

The site linked abose states that ribbons for the three yudh seva medals have an orange background. On the other hand, BR's heroism page shows the same having a yellow background. Could someone clarify which one is correct?

Thats a combat diver's badge ... NSG personell dont have to go thru the course, which indicates that he could be with the Para-Cdos or maybe even MARCOS. I havent heard of the NSG drawing from the IAF or the IN, but its very much possible. The red patch is definately not the Para-Cdos' "Balidan" patch.

I know that ranks upto Colonel can definately serve on active duty in the NSG, for eg. Col. Nirmal Bhargav in Kashnir.

Another thing that just struck me is the insignia on the sleeve. It depicts a sudarshan chakra instead of the snarling black cat. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this signify that the individual belongs to SRG while the black cat badge indicates that he's a part of the SAG?

... and does anyone have the citation for Major Major K Sathiya Moorthy of the NSG? He recieved the Sena Medal this year.

a few advance elements of Rainas II Corps were shifting frontlines when the ceasefire came in 71. Therefore its quite possible that a good number of army personnel from that corps had the dual campaign medals of 71

The oval 'mdeal' below the left pocket is the COAS' Commendation card.

Quite a few Army personnel have both the Paschimi Star and the Poorvi Star. The units after the Bangladesh War were diverted to the Western Front and stayed there till the end of the delineation. Such unit personnel got both the medals.

I cannot make out the details of the medals from the picture therefore, I wont hazard a secondguess on them.

Anyone who is near a shop that sell military educational charts etc [plenty ot them are there in the Punjab and Dehra Dun] can go and get the chart of medals and ribbons, use a digital camera and post it here for the info of all.

The Yudh Seva Medal series have a orange background and the Vishisht Seva series have a yellow background.

Your questions have been answered. You should realise that if you are not aware of the IAF- offrs-in-NSG aspect, you should accept the version of somebody who's seen the guys wearing the badge and who's covered their umpteen assignments over last six years. Instead you go off on a tangent with a funny post and then behave like a crybaby when proven wrong with a cheeky reply.

Aman, please read Shishir's question again: I don't think he was questioning the fact that IAF personnel go into NSG; he was asking when did this start (if not from the beginning of NSG). His question can be interpreted as a rhetorical question, but you should give him the benefit of the doubt.

In the written medium, sometimes misunderstandings happen, since you don't have access to other indicators (like tone of voice, facial expression, etc.)

The medal looks like the Sainya Seva Medal. Its awarded for non operational duties in hard or severe climates. There is a bar for service in J&K, NEFA,Assam and couple of other stuff. I remenber my dad had one of those with 4 bars.

Ok, this is orginally from a picture Id posted in my armed forces personnel thread because i couldnt find this one. i was really intrigued by the medals the sikh officer on the right is wearing (And the aviation wings on his chest) + The officer on the back left. The chap on the back left has a wound medal, and Ray seems to feel the sikh Inspector General has a 65 war medal.

What do all the medals and regalia buffs think?

You are right the Sikh IG does have the 1965 war medal as well as a number of army medals. Looks like he was in the army and then transferred over to BSF or ITBP. Also the guy on the left rear row does have the wound medal.

Whats happening to the guy in the first row between the 2 sikh officers. The guys looks like he is about to go off to sleep. The one behind him in civvies is already dozzing off.
