JE Menon wrote:Thanks for the clarification guys. Meanwhile, what do they mean by SEAL course "topper"? That he came 1st in some sort of ranking system? If so, this is the second time I've heard of an Indian guy "topping" a SEAL course. It will be good to know more, or if it is just DDM getting carried away, which is also possible. But that is OT for this thread I guess.
I am not sure if BUD/S has a ranking system (unlikely) though they probably do recognize the best trainee during graduation. BTW love the guy's comment about repeating the SEAL training

All the MARCOS look pretty SDRE - perfect for blending right in as opposed to bulked-up mushtandas that some of the Khan SEALs love to emulate.

It is the center line fuel tank.

You should read about it. It is special
One of the more interesting design features of the MiG-29 is its auxiliary power unit (APU) that supplies electricity and engine starting power without the need for an external power cart. While most modern combat aircraft have APUs, the MiG-29 has its APU intake on the dorsal spine and the exhaust underneath between the engines. Look here:
http://www.cybermodeler.net/hobby/kits/ ... 27_apu.jpg]
Yes, that is an exhaust duct on the bottom of that centerline fuel tank! When the aircraft doesn't have the centerline bag, no problem, but when they put that tank in place, how do you start the APU without plowing hot jet exhaust all over the top of that fuel tank? Simple, put a duct right through the center of the tank! You can fix your kit tank easily with this detail.
you can see many more close ups at post #40926 at http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/sh ... )/page2729

the sign is the 17th Mountain division. Surprising to see Vijayanta tanks with 17th Mountain div (probably part of TOE when they were an Infantry division). Rohitvats might be able to explain better.
Is it put of static display?

Thats right. Mostly the Signals division as far as I have seen. The tank is a static display.

IAF Jaguars are designed to carry air-to-air missiles above the wing...reportedly an Indian invention IIRC.

Cheenum,

The Black Cat div had a Armd Det as part of a Mtn Bde. I can get more details if you want. The Bde in question was interesting for more reasons than just that though.

In fact the missile may recently have been upgraded to something new. Maybe DIEHL's Iris-T? Or the process of upgrade is going on.

All the Jaguar International variants (and later the Inglishtani variant) had the overwing pylons - dunno if it was an Indian invention or not. However, HAL played a big role in fixing a fatal flaw in the Jaguar's hydraulic system (something which the brits as usual never acknowledged) - shiv's cousin was involved in that.

Would like to know more as well. I have a fair idea where that Mountain Brigade is deployed and what is part of that armoured detachment (wasn't crazy enough to take pictures though :-)). Would also like to know why that brigade is interesting.

Sorry to stay OT. I wonder if overwing missiles for the Jaguar were developed in response to an "Indian requirement" as with so many things in the past like Alouette II with Alouette III engine, up-engining of An 26 to produce An 32, GSh 23 gun pod on MiG 21. However I am not sure if Fairchild was involved in fixing Orpheus turbojet on Packets.

Hi Shiv,

Have some info on the C-119 and the Orpheus engine from http://www.ruudleeuw.com/c119-info.htm
Jacob Chakko wrote me in Oct.2006:
"I am a retired Gp Capt Jacob Chakko of the Indian Air Force. I immigrated to the USA in 1969 and worked for Stewart-Davis Inc (S-D Inc) and was at one time their Chief Engineer in Long Beach. The President and the VP of S-D Inc at that time were Herb Steward and Dan Thompson.
I was also instrumental in modifying a PBY Amphibian as a 'water bomber', fighting fires in LA and we had modified about 7 such aircraft to do this.
We had a major contract with the IAF to give them support for the Packet C-119G aircraft with J-34-3400 Westinghouse engines as Jet Packs (like the C-82 that PanAm had at that time with the Westinghouse 1600s).
Before that, while I was in the IAF, I was responsible for installing an Orpheus jet Engine on the C-119G Packets and this was a major success; S-D had a major part supporting this effort too."

Regards from:
Jacob K. Chakko,
Bangalore, India.
On the Jaguar overwing missile, I do not think it was specific for the IAF. From this comment:
Developed jointly by Britain and France from an initial concept of light trainer and close-support aircraft. Has sold overseas, to Ecuador, India and Oman. The RAF version has more avionics than the French, with integrated nav/attack and laser ranger. The GR.1 saw a lot of action in the Gulf War, painted desert pink and carrying overwing Sidewinder missiles. The Jaguar lacks one vital component, radar. It does however possess a computer system which allows waypoint co-ordinates to be entered before the start of the mission. Thereafter, a moving map display presents the aircraft's projected position to the pilot, and this can be manually corrected as the mission proceeds. The Jaguar has been sold to Nigeria, Ecuador, Oman and India.

IIRC IAF Jaguars are the only ones equipped with overwing Matra Magic missiles.

In the two seater the back seat pilot gets out of the cockpit, climbs on to the wing removes screws holding the missile and lights the missile with matches. Single seater needs autopilot because doubles riding is not allowed. :P

http://www.vectorsite.net/avjag.html
Although it might seem that overwing launch would have led to problems with stores separation, it apparently was no big deal.
