Some tweets going around:

Delhi Police denies any lathi charge. They insist that all the beatings were for free

When the Supreme Court says things like Suo Moto, (Nitin) Gadkari thinks they are talking about him

Brahma Chellaney tweets:Indian PM and his government may be weak on national security but they're cold-bloodedly swift when their political interests are challenged

shiv ji is right. The regime is being increasingly forced to take sides and reveal its real affiliations. Moreover, they are killing off peaceful opposition and criticism in a paranoid obsession about preserving the core dynastic fulcrum which alone stands in their perception as the survival route. Already they have started declaring virtually all criticism as "extra constitutional" and "right wing/communal" [from p-secs communal==Hindu onlee] "destabilizing forces". In the end they want this frustration to take the violent route which they hope to crush using the loyal security apparatus and "defence" forces.

But the same calculations were made by the Brits and they had to compromise by allowing power to be passed over to a compromising section. The Brits had one big advantage though - they knew that their "core" would still survive because they had an alternative homeland. The current regime has no such option to preserve its dynastic core based structure and hence will not be able to repeat a Brit-style transfer of power. It will be a fight to the bitter end and they are simply inviting revolution and civil war by what they are doing.

Kashmiri's exit: Will jihad fall apart in Kerala?
The recent killings of top terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri has created ripples in terror modules operating in India, especially Kerala.

In recent times, Kashmiri's call for Ghazb-e-Hind (war on India) had been gaining a lot of ground in the state. Kerala has many splinter groups fighting for jihad (holy war), but what Kashmiri had managed to do was unite these forces.

Very recently, Kashmiri had asserted that all jihadi recruitments would happen from Kerala. He felt that cadres from this part of the world were the most determined and loyal.

Moreover, picking up cadres from Kerala was always easier for any terror group, as the mindset amongst a lot of youth from this state is pro-Pakistan, according to Intelligence Bureau reports.

Besides this, communal tensions are extremely high in Kerala. Every communal flareup is followed by a major recruitment drive.
Terror groups such as the Students Islamic Movement of India and the Indian Mujahideen, which are very active in the state, had started to lose favour over the past couple of years.

Modules in the state split into several groups for lack of focus in their operation. However, Kashmiri's decision to launch his attacks from Kerala had brought about a drastic change in the mindset of the terror groups.

In Kashmiri, the Kerala cadre had found a leader, an inspiration. He was starting to become their next Osama.

Both police and the Intelligence Bureau say that it was becoming extremely difficult to stop this phenomenon in Kerala and to a large extent the situation was getting out of control. Besides the ideological influence from Pakistan, the Gulf funding made matters worse.
The process for Kashmiri's pet project -- the Ghazb-e-Hind -- had already commenced in Kerala with a certain number of youths from the state being transported across the border to be personally trained by him.
Kerala is surely a lost cause.... Wonder what "communal" clashes is Vicky talking about in kerala?
This must be one state where the muslims are kings/masters and yet, we have reports saying they( youth and not even irrelevant oldies) are "pro-Pakistan" ( IB words) !!!! :| :|

^^^Kerala : in another thread I have posed the question, that given the otherwise hostile environment in other resourceful non-Muslim nations - Jihad's next more favourable base can be in India, where the regime and big swathes of political organizations are sympathetic to the mullahcracy and will protect the ideology and its institutions at any price.

Just because supposedly Ilias is gone, does not mean Kerala becomes less attractive. Moreover we are always fixating on the formal faces of Jihad - in AFPAK etc, but we forget that the main infrastructure which sustains and generates those faces - the theologians, and their institutions and their funding sit right under our noses and in countries we are trying to suck up to in the name of supposed trade and growth - both here in India or say countries in the Gulf.

Indian Rashtra, without even knowing or consciously acknowledging it, might be developing systems to counter the power of extra-political/constitutional power centers. Sonia's rise, while abetted by DIE and INC slave mentality, might have subconsciously sowed seeds of disgust, which will never be acknowledged on the outside, that are leading to these steps. national necessity to deal with terrorism/jihad, and subversive ideologies are merely side dishes which are accelerating the consolidation of power inside "elected/representative" power centers holding legitimate authority in Central Executive.

in the first phase, systems need to be build up that seize power from behind-the-scenes-power-brokers and king-makers. the second phase is to make sure that legitimate power centers are insulated from subversive ideologies/people. but there is still some time away for that. for now, we are still in Phase 1.

who says India isn't dynamic, and can't deal with political decadence of ruling class??? It will be slow, but I think we are starting to take steps in this direction. we have to remember that we are where we are today b/c of 1400 years of repeated battering. we can't rectify so many centuries of dhimmification overnight, or even within a decade or two. it will be a generational process...

Deepika(Malayalam)
The above news link is unfortunately in Malayalam. But it says 21 suspected SIMI activists were picked up from Kollengode, in Palakkad Dt. in Kerala. This happened yesterday afternoon. They were picked up from a mosque compound by Kollengode SI and party. One of the fellows who were caught have already spent 11 months in prison on terrorism charges. They all seem to be members of an organisation "Wahd-e-Islam".

The folks picked up were reported to have been questioned by Intelligence chaps from Thrissur, Palakkad and Coimbatore. Lots of people had gathered around the PS, so much so that when these people were let off Kerala Police had to escort them 2kms further into Tamil Nadu border, fearing that the crowd would bash them up. The news report also adds that "Sangh Parivar" activists had staged a road picquet asking for proper investigation by the agencies.

Maudany shifted from prison to posh wellness centre
At noon on Tuesday, Abdul Nasir Maudany, accused in the Coimbatore Blasts case and People's Democratic Party leader, was shifted from the Parapana Agrahara Central jail here to Soukya Holistic Health and Ayurveda Treatment Centre.

A posh “wellness” centre was the Government of Karnataka's choice for the terror accused when the Supreme Court quashed his bail plea. The court had instructed the government to find him an ayurvedic treatment centre in the city, rejecting his plea to be sent back to Kerala for treatment. Soukya's roster boasts of a guest list that includes ‘A-list celebrities' such as the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla and pop star Fergie to the who's who of Bangalore

Maudany's stay at Soukya will cost the government a whopping Rs. 8 lakh, according to sources. It is learnt from sources that Maudany, who suffers from spinal spondilitis, neck pain and diabetes, will undergo “holistic” treatment at Soukya for the next 28 days.

A combination of ayurveda, homeopathy and naturopathy, combined with daily Panchakarma treatment, has been prescribed. A police team, comprising up to 12 policemen, will guard the Soukya premises.
My only prayer is that no most wanted criminal should ever be brought back to Desh from Pak, Gulf etc since we will end up paying for his 5-star stays!!!

India’s corrupt protecting the terrorists
By M D Nalapat

PALANIAPPAN Chidambaram deserves credit for being open about acknowledging that the sole task of the government is to collect money from the people. This principle got completely enshrined in policy once Sonia Maino chose him as the Union Finance Minister in 2004. From then onwards, the collection agencies of the Government of India were set targets that they were asked to fulfill by using the coercive means at their disposal to the fullest. Anything beyond the target set could be shared among the officials, and this was no small figure, as the financial machinery of government was empowered by Chidambaram to confiscate, imprison and harass at will. As in the time of the British Raj, the country has been bled since 1947 for the benefit of its new rulers. And now the Nehru Era has given way to what may be described as the Maino Era.

That Sonia Maino has very little time for her so-called relatives on the Nehru side of the family is no secret. These unfortunates seldom get invited to Number Ten, and almost never to the holidays in the Maldives or off the coasts of Spain and France that are the locations for get-togethers with the extended branch of the Maino family. As for the Vadras, this clan too have been placed in the same bracket as the Nehrus, which is as a group to be largely ignored socially, even as one Maino after the other gets VVIP treatment in India courtesy the individual who is the fount of their prominence and prosperity, the charming and steely Sonia Maino. Under what provision of the Constitution of India the extended Mainos are given VVIP privileges at airports and elsewhere is not clear, but there must surely be some such provision that is not visible to the naked eye.

What is very clear is that the Maino Era has converted India into a land of scams. A few of these have come to light, although the overwhelming majority still remain hidden, locked up in the records of agencies that regard their foremost duty as the care, feeding and protection of a single clan. However, despite the complicity of the Indian media in this state of affairs, change seems to be beckoning. A second freedom struggle appears to be taking shape against India’s ruling elite. Civil society may be slowly getting astir about the volume of loot that is leaving the shores of the country. For the difference between other eras and that of the Mainos is that in this yuga, illegal cash mostly gets sent abroad, through hawala networks based in Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Dubai and Mauritius. Most such networks are linked to the unofficial headquarters of the South Asia hawala trade, the ISI. While Hassan Ali has been placed in jail—thanks to the patriotism and zeal of Chief justice Kapadia and his band of brother judges—there are dozens more still at large. They can be seen inside ministerial mansions or in 5-star hotels, and many take their orders from a shadowy fixer who doubles as a “political advisor” to a VVIP. This individual{Ahmad Patel} has intimate knowledge of the Nepal, Dubai and Mauritius hawala networks, although he is not familiar with the Malaysian and Thai networks, perhaps because the latter two are not as closely linked to the ISI.

However, despite his contacts and influence, this political fixer—sorry, advisor—is undisturbed by the Enforcement Directorate, the Central Bureau of Investigation and other agencies that are given the legal responsibility of taking action against illegal money transfers from India to foreign countries and vice-versa. It is this familiarity with hard cash and not any skill in politics that has enabled this fixer to remain at the core of governance in India since 2004. A check by the Intelligence Bureau into any of the nine mobile phones used by him would reveal details far more corrosive than the conversations of Niira Radia. However, for reasons that are opaque, the IB has refused to monitor the conversations and activity of this individual, just as it has been shooed off from intercepting the conversations and discovering the linkages of oher key players within the ruling elite who are in close contact with ISI-directed hawala networks

The arrest of an Al Qaeda operative from Kerala by the French authorities has shown the danger to national security posed by Home Minister Chidambaram’s policy of concentrating his attention only on protecting those close to The Madame, rather than focussing on those who are a threat to national security, including those at the higher rungs of certain political parties. That an Al Qaeda operative functioned freely in India was because of the lack of attention given to this network by the Union Home Ministry. Till today, none of this operative’s many associates in India have been rounded up or questioned. Nor has effective action been taken to discover and eliminate other Al Qaeda networks in India. Indeed, although agencies in Europe and the US have identified and apprehended more than a dozen suspected Al Qaeda operatives in India, thus so far the Home Ministry has not managed to locate even one such operative. We must remember that this is the same department of the Government of India that allowed David Headley to wander around unmolested in India. That allowed domestic networks to assist the ISI in executing the 26/11 Mumbai attack. There are more Headleys wandering around India, who are spotters for the ISI, but not a single one of them has been apprehended, except by foreign agencies, and that too only when these terrorists attempt to conduct operations elsewhere than in India.

These days, especially in UP, Maharashtra and Kerala, young people are being indoctrinated to join up with those who see Osama bin Laden as a hero. In this, they are in the same company as the All-India Congress Committee, whose general secretary mourned the demise of the Yemeni terrorist, even protesting against a burial at sea. Presumably, the AICC general secretary would have liked a state funeral for Bin Laden, presumably in India.

The fact that both India and Pakistan get their legal tender from the same European source makes it easy for the ISI to print fake notes and get them disseminated in India. Thus far, we have been told by the UPA’s Maino men that it is truck drivers and the like who distribute fake currency. This is true. Some truck drivers allow themselves to be carriers, and spread fake currency across the country. However, Chidambaram is silent about the biggest user of fake currency, which is the political class. In election time especially, hundreds of crores of rupees of fake currency come into the hands of political leaders, who distribute them to unwary electors. A check on the money seized by the Election Commission may be expected to reveal to a degree the extent of political patronage of the fake currency networks. Because of their need for such counterfeit notes, political leaders protect the networks that distribute them in bulk. In the process, they protect networks that use the profits from the fake currency racket to fund terror activities in India. Such networks also spend large sums seeking to fanatisise elements of the population in India, thereby enabling them to get recruited into Al Qaeda. Since 2003, the fact is that India has become an important base for Al Qaeda. And the reason for this is the protection given by important politicians to the hawala networks that they use to send currency to Nepal, Dubai, Malaysia, Thailand and Mauritius for onward transmission to Swiss and other banks.

Hassan Ali is not the only hawala operator. While civil society must remain vigilant against the efforts of Ali’s VVIP friends to release him from either prison or life, there must be a demand to discover the other Hassan Alis operating with impunity in India. Recently the Government of India announced—you guessed it—a “High Level Committee to Tackle Black Money”. And who are the members of this revolutionary committee? The same individuals who have, in their official capacities, failed so comprehensively to eliminate Black Money in India. Unless elements within Civil Society are given the legal power to initiate action, to expect a compromised and corrupted officialdom to unearth Black Money is to indulge in fantasy. Anna Hazare is right in demanding that Civil Society and not what is so inaccurately called a Civil Servant needs to undertake the job of cleansing the system.

It is an easy matter to discover the extent of illegal flows. All that is needed is to compare the amount paid for items such as petroleum products, machinery and aircraft by state entities in India and compare them with the prices charged to buyers in Europe or in North America. Take the case of the $ eight billion deal for Airbus aircraft that was signed by Air India in 2007. Usually, there is a five per cent (sometimes even higher) discount given to the purchaser of such aircraft. European airlines have reflected this discount in their figures for cost of purchase. Has Air India done the same? And if such a discount was not given to the airline, to whom has it been paid? We are not talking of peanuts here, but of $400 million even if only a five per cent discount was given. Also, Airbus had committed to build a Euro 100 million facility in India as a consequence of the order. Has such a facility come up? If not, why not? In the case of oil, why is it that the oil sent to India costs more than that sent to some European countries? Is there a hidden discount that is going to undisclosed quarters? The same can be said about Defense deals, where India gets charged much more than more advanced countries. What needs to be done is for the Supreme Court of India to set up a committee that will look into international prices for the big-ticket items procured by the Government of India, and ascertain if the price offered to India is higher. If it is, then the conclusion is obvious.

A database needs to get created of the friends and relatives of VVIPs, whether these be Indian citizens or not, whether these are resident in India or not. If individuals with no visible expertise suddenly become flush with funds and get contract after contract from sundry entities—as they did in the course of the Commonwealth Games—they need to be closely examined, in conjunction with the law enforcement authorities of the countries where they are residing. Because of the widespread use of hawala channels that are ISI-controlled, a presumption has to be made that Black Money sent abroad is linked to terror. A swarm of letters rogatory need to be sent, based on the information already available to the CBI, the ED, the DRI and other agencies, information that they are at present doing nothing about. The agencies get active only when exposed and never pro-actively. Even in the CWG and 2G investigations, sources in Mauritius and elsewhere claim that informal requests have been received from high levels in India “ to go slow with the response” or even to “ claim that the information is not available, or is incorrect”. Someday, a government will come that will have the will and the competence to undertake an enquiry into the loot of India that is taking place. Fortunately, in this era of electronic money transfers, proof will remain for long periods of time, as such records cannot be destroyed as easily as paperwork can.

Are there any accounts of how Hawala originated?

As a high school student I recall an article in Illustrated Weekly on Haji Mastan which said British Intelligence setup the networks using high speed boats and gold smuggling to land agents in Nazi occupied areas of Middle east and after the war these networks went independent by smuggling cigarettes and gold into India. They smuggled silver out of India.

I dont have copy of that old article.

Wiki says Hawala originated in Islamic law.
Hawala has its origins in classical Islamic law and is mentioned in texts of Islamic jurisprudence as early as the 8th century. Hawala itself later influenced the development of the agency in common law and in civil laws such as the aval in French law and the avallo in Italian law. The words aval and avallo were themselves derived from Hawala. The transfer of debt, which was "not permissible under Roman law but became widely practiced in medieval Europe, especially in commercial transactions", was due to the large extent of the "trade conducted by the Italian cities with the Muslim world in the Middle Ages."

NEW DELHI: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has said oil ministry and its regulatory arm for oil hunting companies, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, showed favour to at least three explorers.

The draft report, which is awaiting oil ministry's comments, has said that the ministry and DGH allowed Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd to violate terms of the contract with the government for its showcase Andhra offshore fields and increase its capital expenditure plan to start production from India's biggest gas discovery in recent years.

In case of Krishna-Godavari basin field accounts, CAG has also pointed out sweetheart deals in RIL's contracts, contending government's oversight officials allowed the company to recover, from sale of gas, expenditure on the field before the money was actually spent.

The report also raises questions on favours shown by the ministry to oil explorer Cairn India Ltd, which operates India's biggest onland oilfield in Rajasthan's Barmer district. A joint venture of Reliance, BG (formerly British Gas) and state-run ONGC that operates the Panna-Mukta and Tapti group of gas fields, has also been criticized for stonewalling the audit by the government agency.

Can army kill, rape & enjoy immunity: SC poser to govt.

Any chance Justice Katju was part of the Bench. While ULFA, Maoists, Paki Generals(non STate Actors) have the best protection in Indian Law. Looks like the Indian Judicary wants to send only BSF, Army and Police to the Gallows but not the Human Rights Friendly Terrorists. The Kerela High Court sent a Cop to life sentence for killing a Maoist based on just one witness acount, we have cops in Gujarat in all sorts of Tangle while Maoists are being granted bail by the SUpreme Court.

Man if I want to commit a crime in this country I should start a Maoist or Miltant outfit, I can murder, loot any number of people and be free from punishment. Like one Maoist leader in AP who surendered 2 years ago and was involved in 15-20 murders said " I should not be prosecueted for my crimes I was a Maoist then, I am not a Maoist now".

Forget Abbottabad type operation, I dont think security forces in this country can shoot a Maoist leader or Miltant in this country. They will all be hanged for Murder.

NO maoist and only a Handful of Terrorists have been hanged, punished with Jail more than 20 years for killing thousands.

Unless we pressure the Indian Judiciary and Politicans get thier act together, we should expect more bloodshed of the common man as interest within this country will make sure that security forces will be frightened to take them on.

The problem is that there is so much gung ho behavior amoung certain sections of media to fix the Army, Fix police about which they are proactive about but keep silent on conviction of Terrorists and Maoists.

AFSPA is a product of the countries Armed forces being unaturally involved in Police Action, army of these miltancies are sponsored by India's enemies.

They want the Indian Armed forces to further operate without Legal protection so as to further degrade Morale, tarnish reputation of a career with many Indians.

The best Solution to AFSPA is to withdraw Army in Police actions by getting our Police forces better manned and armed over a period of time.

However, the vested interests running their PR enterprises against India should also be tackled.

New Delhi: The government is ready with a draft bill for a new law to protect minorities against discrimination in education, employment and housing, a report claimed Monday. As per the new law, discriminating minorities could attract a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh and a jail term of three years.

The draft bill to constitute an Equal Opportunity Commission has been circulated by the minority affairs ministry. The commission is being constituted based on the findings of the Sachar Committee, which dealt with discrimination faced by minorities, especially Muslims.

A fine of Rs 1 lakh per day can also be slapped by the commission if the accused does not comply with its rulings. Importantly, the proposed law will cover all the minorities and also has a provision to bring in other social groups within the ambit of the law through gazette notifications.

Do you have a link for this. I got a link Tough law to prevent bias against minorities

Looks like after this law is enacted there will be a host of cases in Mumbai with Shabana Azmi, Emraan Hasmi, Mahesh Bhatt types who take a lot of those housing societies to the cleaners, there will little scope for them to put up a defence.

^^

So now biases can be dealt with "laws"?

Just like some "educated Indians" are arguing in the Lokpal thread that corruption will be cured with enough laws/regulations etc.

Morons. As if landlords are not going to come up with excuses / silly conditions to refuse a prospective tenant.

Better still, if some landlords gets caught, it will shut out the "minorities" completely.

^^ Waiting for Somnath-ji to provide the unseen/"non-bigoted non-saffron loonie" angle of this new draft and how it actually isn't as bad as it looks.

PS: Might sound a sarcastic post but am actually waiting to see it from the "secular view"

Exactly. One thing India never lacked were the umpteen laws and Parliament Acts. And who is going to sit and enforce all these laws? A police force which is even now heavily burdened? The existing judicial system with a heavy back log sitting over these cases?

Pioneer reports:
Probe found no security breach: Pranab
June 21, 2011 8:06:26 PM

IANS | New Delhi

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday that the Intelligence Bureau probed a possible security breach in his office but found "nothing".

"Intelligence Bureau investigated. Looked into it and there was nothing," Mukherjee told reporters here, reacting on a media report that said he had feared serious security breach in his office.

According to the report, Mukherjee in September last year urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to order a quiet probe into what he reportedly felt was a "serious breach of security" in his office.

Reportedly, the Intelligence Bureau found some adhesive, a sort of chewing gum, planted at 16 locations at the North Block office of the finance minister including rooms of two aides.

"In respect of the news item regarding bugging in my office, I believe the investigative agency found nothing," Mukherjee said.
Either he needs to provide more trash cans or the chewing gum was used to place 16 bugs and which removed prior to the investigation.

Doesnt he find it odd that gum/adhesive was found on walls on two sides of his office?

He probably wanted to ensure that Chidu did not bug the hell out of him. Preemptive cleanup probably.
