Some of the mayhem in Karachi is Green vs Green and not just ethnic - political.

Peshawar has Green vs Green action as does Quetta, Parachinar and the Northern Areas (Gilgit Baltistan).

The Shias plus the non Muslims (Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, etc) are perhaps 20% of the population with various Sunni branches being the dominating majority.

The Generals in the PA aren't interested in taking the needed action because of fears that the PA would splinter - freeze if forced to take strong & direct action against radical Sunnis. I hasn't seen anything publically stated by the PA that the internal situation is beyond their control, but it quite likely is.

The civilian government lacks the power to demand much of anything from the PA, so the Sunni vs Shia action is likely to continue and probably intensify after the non Muslims are completely driven out.

Interesting observation! If the paki army is unwilling to act against the aggressors out of fear (and not hatred for minorities, which is also a factor), then the power center of pakiland has already failed, and the events are unfolding at their own pace. How long before the beards realize that the guard dogs are not barking, and they essentially have a free run of that asylum of a country?

FIR registered over attack on church in Karachi
KARACHI: A large number of civil society activists and members of Christian community held a demonstration on Saturday, urging the authorities to protect them from the extremists who attacked and damaged a church in the old city area on Friday evening.

On their part, police registered a case against some unnamed assailants.

Responding to Dawn’s queries, Father Mohen Victor of the St Francis Church said two wedding ceremonies were being held and 200 to 300 people were attending them when a big mob gathered outside the church and started pelting stones and attacking it with sticks.

The mob entered the church compound and damaged the cars and motorcycles parked there. Flowerpots, windows and doors of the church were also damaged.

He said that as soon as the mob entered the compound the people gathered in the church went upstairs and turned off the lights.

The attack continued for more than 90 minutes. The community members in the church called their contacts outside and police arrived soon afterwards. Gunshots were heard from outside the church and the mob dispersed.

In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, a country claimed to have been created as a safe haven for the Mohammaddens of the Indian Sub-Continent two separate incidents of Green on Green Intra Mohammadden sectarian violence, with members of the minority Ahmadi / Ahmadiyya sect of Mohammaddenism being victimised.

The first incident of the “more pure” eliminating the “less pure” in Punjab Province:

In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan a country claimed to have been created as a haven for the Mohammaddens of the Indian Sub-Continent, even the Mohammadden Sabbath of Friday does nothing to damp down Green on Green Intra-Mohammadden religious inspired sectarian violence .

Lawyer belonging to the Shia / Shiite sect of Mohammaddenism, which is the minority sect in the overwhelmingly Mohammadden majority Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is executed by motorcycle borne co-religionists likely angered by his defending the leader of the Shia sect based Sipah-i-Mohammad:
LAHORE, Oct 19: In what appeared to be a target killing, a senior lawyer was shot dead near the Lahore High Court by unknown assailants on Friday morning.

Advocate Shakir Ali Rizvi had left his private chamber at Jain Mandar Chowk along with his driver, Sohail Masih, and nephew Syed Naeem Abbas Rizvi by his car. When the car reached near the Lahore High Court, two armed motorcyclists opened fire on it. ……………..

Family of the deceased said he had been receiving life threats for his role for the Shia community members and pursuing their cases.

Late Riziv was also defending Ghulam Raza Naqvi, a leader of banned outfit Sipah-i-Muhammad, in different cases. Presently, Naqvi is behind the bars. Advocate Rizvi was survived by his wife, nine daughters and a son. ……………………

The Rape and Murder of Pakistan’s Christian Children :
In every one of these cases, Pakistani police either failed to act or sided with the rapists and murderers.
what animates this savagery? Discussing the aforementioned rape of 9-year-old Gulfam, local sources in Pakistan put it well: “It is shameful. Such incidents occur frequently. Christian girls are considered goods to be damaged at leisure. Abusing them is a right. According to the [Muslim] community’s mentality it is not even a crime. Muslims regard them as spoils of war.”

Green on Green Intra Mohammadden sectarian violence in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan sees adherents of the minority Bohra / Bohri / Dawoodi Bohra sect of Mohammaddenism being predated upon by co-religionists of another sect.

For a country claimed to have been created as a safe haven for members of a religion touted as being “the Religion of Peace”, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan certainly has an extremely high degree of religion inspired murder that pits one sect of Mohammaddenism against another:

Confirmation that this incident was a case of Green on Green Intra-Mohammadden religious inspired violence. Sunni Mohammadden group claims credit for the killing of co-religionists of the minority Shia sect for reasons claimed to be rooted in Mohammaddenism:

Shias and their future in Pakistan
So where will this end? Prediction is where the Pundit rubber meets the road, so here goes:

The state will make a genuine effort to stop this madness. Shias are still not seen as outsiders by most educated Pakistani Sunnis. When middle class Pakistanis say “this cannot be the work of a Muslim” they are being sincere, even if they are not being accurate.

But as the state makes a greater effort to rein in the most hardcore Sunni militants, it will be forced to confront the “good jihadis” of yore who are frequently linked to the same networks. This confrontation will eventually happen, but between now and “eventually” lies much confusion and bloodshed.

The Jihadist community will feel the pressure and the division between those who are willing to suspend domestic operations and those who no longer feel ISI has the cause of Jihadist Islam at heart will sharpen. The second group will be targeted by the state and will respond with more indiscriminate anti-Shia attacks. Just as in Iraq, jihadist gangs will blow up random innocent Shias whenever they want to make a point of any kind. Things (purely in terms of numbers killed) will get much worse before they get better. As the state opts out of Jihad (a difficult process in itself, but one that is almost inevitable, the alternatives being extremely unpleasant) the killings will greatly accelerate and will continue for many years before order is re-established. The worst is definitely yet to come. This will naturally mean an accelerating Shia brain drain, but given the numbers that are there, total emigration is not an option. Many will remain and some will undoubtedly become very prominent in the anti-terrorist effort (and some will, unfortunately, become special targets for that reason).

IF the state is unable to opt out of Jihadist policies (no more “good jihadis” in Kashmir and Afghanistan and “bad jihadis” within Pakistan) then what? I don’t think even the strategists who want this outcome have thought it through. The economic and political consequences will be horrendous and as conditions deteriorate the weak, corrupt, semi-democratic state will have to give way to a Sunni “purity coup”. Though this may briefly stabilize matters it will eventually end with terrible regional war and the likely breakup of Pakistan. . Since that is a choice that almost no one wants (not India, not the US, not China, though perhaps Afghanistan wouldn’t mind) there will surely be a great deal of multinational effort to prevent such an eventuality.

Sadly, the Tariq Ali type overseas/Westernized-elite Left will play no discernible role in any of this. If we do (God forbid) get to the nationalist-Sunni-coup phase, Pankaj Mishra may find something positive in it (“strength” and the willingness to stand up against imperialism being a high priority for him) but events will not fit into that framework for too long.

From the comments section:

Dear Omar,

Thank you for the courage and honesty you have shown in writing this article (surely you must know that you could be targeted for speaking the truth so openly?)What a chilling, sobering piece...the video at the end is particularly horrifying. What savages. You were right because I could not bear to watch it to the end either. Your entire article has shaken me to the core, for many reason not the least of which is that I am a Shia doctor myself and would be the prime target for killing in Pakistan. While we are aware of what is going on for several years and hear of new atrocities regularly, it is entirely another experience to read your article and see a summary in black and white. Additionally, I recently lost one of my dearest Dow Medical College classmates and friend, Aslam "Babban" Mirza to this mindless violence, his crime being that he was a Shia practicing in Quetta, serving the people he grew up with selflessly. I can no longer even count the number of applications I receive from highly prominent Shia physicians in Pakistan, asking for jobs ANYWHERE in the US as long as they can get out of Pakistan and save their families. Some of them are heading departments and chairing college administrative positions and ALL of them opted to either stay back or return to Pakistan to serve the people they love. Your article is very timely and every Pakistani (and every human who cares about simple basic human rights) needs to do SOMETHING to stop this madness now. We are going to participate in "The 10,000 Rally" which is trying to get 10,000 people to keep a vigil outside the UN Headquarters in NY on December 7 starting at 11:00 a.m. to protest against the 10,000 Shias who have been killed worldwide solely on the basis of their Shia beliefs. Through this note, I would like to invite all individuals who care about human rights to join me in this 5 hour vigil. Surely this is not too much to ask of New Yorkers at least.

Thanks again, Omar, I am very grateful that you took the time to write this badly needed summary.

Hindu doctor shot dead in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: A well-known Hindu doctor was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in the restive Balochistan province of southwest Pakistan today, police said.

Lakshmi Chand was going home when two gunmen riding a motorcycle fired at him in Mastung town, police officials said.

Chand was killed instantly and the gunmen fled from the spot. Police sent the body for an autopsy and registered a case.

The motive for the killing could not be immediately ascertained.

Members of the minority Hindu community in Balochistan have been targeted by criminal gangs and extremists in recent months.

Several Hindus, mostly petty traders, have been kidnapped for ransom.
