The Islamic Republic of Pakistan continues to reap the blowback of its efforts at fomenting Mohammadden religious based terrorism to target Kaafir India.

Cricket's world players union, the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA), has told its members to avoid the new Twenty20 Super League in Pakistan on security grounds:

Tim May CEO of FICA:
"The security consultants came back and said that the risk of touring Pakistan in a cricketing sense is unmanageable.

"I haven't spoken directly to any players but the feedback we are getting from player associations throughout the world is that players are very appreciative and understanding of the advice.

"We can't force the players not to go but I think you'll find the majority, if not all, of current international cricketers will heed that advice and, unfortunately for Pakistan, not participate in this event this year."

Recent situation across LoC spoiled India's Pakistan tour: PCB Chief
KARACHI: PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has claimed that a tour by the Indian team to Pakistan had almost been finalised before the recent situation across the Line of Control (LoC) "spoiled everything".
...

"I would like to disclose here that India's tour to Pakistan had almost been finalised after both PCB and BCCI held a series of useful meetings during the Pakistan tour," Ashraf said.

"We not only met the BCCI but also Indian government officials and were at a stage of giving practical shape to the tour. But the recent situation across the Line of Control spoiled everything," he claimed.

"But I believe that peace-loving people of both the countries should make joint efforts to defeat those elements who are trying to sabotage the peace process," he added.

No, it is a temporary set back, the matches will happen for sure in the immediate future, PCB chief should be patient and have trust in Indian ruling party.

Now we have terror camps, they have terror camps, if we launch hot pursuit, they will launch hot pursuit, same to same. I hope MMS also offers some weapons like night vision goggles, GPS equipment and some coordinates of these Hindu terror camps as a trust building measure. May be this is already in place. How about unilateral disarmament of IA? we can progress a lot. dus percenti can join in on the spoils in the scams during one of his 'darga visits'.

Increased intensity and efforts to kill Hindus in J&K mainly in the name of HIndu terrorists and draw an ==. Now terrorism in J&K is justified under the guise of killing Hindu terrorists and GoI cant say anything because they are merely killing Hindu terrorists. Now Hurriyat's meeting with Hafiz Saeed takes a new meaning.

High time that Hindus start to carry weapons. For long under British, the right to carry weapons to enforce Dharma was taken away from the Hindus. Its time we regain our right. No one in the current UPA govt will ever protect a Hindu. He is living like an alien in his own country, in his own land. Without rights, with fear and getting killed each day by terrorists and being called terrorists himself for standing upto voice secular values. What a pathetic situation. We must not only get armed like the Sikhs, but also we must get together to regain our lost lands upto Hindu Kush. Let the meaning of Hindu Kush be a separate meaning after that.

Not exactly. There are more and more noises from TTP in line with Pakistan Army's worldview. Earlier they were releasing statement totally opposed to the Army (Like Pakistan Army were Kaffirs, Zionist stooges). Now they are releasing statements attacking whoever the Army hates.

This probably indicates that some kind of deal has been worked out with TTP whereby TFTAs let them be and in return TTP spreads its wings to other areas (like India and Afghanistan).

Hafiz Saeed is head of an organization which has beheaded many Indian civilians.

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/FF30Df03.html

Both Hindus and Muslims have been beheaded by the jihadis over the past 15 years. In 2001, the beheading of two Hindu priests in Poonch triggered immense rage in the district, prompting the security forces to impose a curfew in the area. More Muslims have, however, been beheaded or subjected to gory forms of torture and killing. Muslims suspected of being informers are seen as the worst "traitors" of the jihadi cause.

There have been cases of children being beheaded on the suspicion that their fathers were informers and of women being injected with poison as punishment for their fathers, brothers and husbands working with the local police. In 2002, three teenage girls were killed in Hasiyot in Rajouri district. Two of them were beheaded, the third shot dead. Militants accused them of being informers but the girls' families believe that the girls were killed because they were going to school. In March this year, five-year-old Zahida and her four-year-old brother were executed by the Lashkar-e-Toiba in Jammu's Doda district because her parents refused to provide sanctuary to militants.

Meanwhile, several cases of beheading came to light in the run-up to the recent general elections. The Hindustan Times reported an incident where militants chopped off the ears of two village elders they had abducted in Jammu's Udhampur district. The victims had been severely beaten before their ears were chopped off. The militants then took the two victims back to the village and showed the chopped ears to the terrified villagers. This was followed by a warning to the villagers not to vote in the general election.

It is OK that Hafiz Saeed who heads an organization of beheaders speaks freely on Pak TV programs. But the whole peace of the region is under danger if Indians and Indian anchors (who are not head of terrorist organizations) speak about beheading on their own programs.

Mullah Dho Pyaja, Raja Ka Baja

LoC unrest ahead of polls, political turmoil big odds: PM
.The premier said:“The recent Indian adventures on the Line of Control and wave of terrorist attacks in the country amidst political flux ahead of national elections point towards the enormity of the challenges faced by the country.“Given the varied nature of challenges confronting the country‚ there is need to increase the frequency of such exercises so as to afford wider exposure to elements of national power.”He asserted that the government ‘is fully aware of the intricacy of the situation and is taking all possible measures to maintain stability‚ national cohesion and preserve national interests’. “We have initiated a composite dialogue process with New Delhi to resolve all issues including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir.”The prime minister said: "Today‚ there is a national consensus on fighting and eliminating extremism and terrorism which threaten not only our national security but also our way of life and we will not allow terrorists and extremists to subdue our will or frighten us.“Terrorism has changed our lifestyles. Though the people of Pakistan‚ its law enforcement agencies‚ particularly the armed forces have rendered unprecedented sacrifices both in men and material in the fight against terrorism‚ yet the international clamor to do more is relentless. We have an independent and vibrant media which has to play a key role. It is now its responsibility to contribute towards national cohesion and project the true image of Pakistan."Ashraf said that the Dekhonomoney begging diplomacy is an integral part of foreign policy. Pakistan is blessed with immense human and natural resources which needed to be tapped to make Pakistan worthy of its status of a nuclear power, he said.Commenting on Afghan situation, the premier said: “Pakistan supports Afghan owned and Afghan led peace process for achieving intra-Afghan consensus. A peaceful‚ stable and economically developed Afghanistan is vital for Pakistan's own stability.”He said it was important to see what Pakistan could achieve from its geo-strategic position supported by doable policies and provision of requisite resources. The prime minister appreciated the quality of analytical work presented by the National Defence University team, saying that he was encouraged to note that the future leadership in civil and military services was cognisant of the challenges."I have complete trust in the ability of our people and the armed forces to rise to the occasion and work for a peaceful and a prosperous Pakistan."Prime Minister Ashraf urged the participants to pledge to make Pakistan a moderate, progressive and an Islamic welfare state by killing Hindus, sikhs, Ahmadis, Shias and Munafiqs as envisaged by ‘our founding fathers’.

yes, another brilliant plan from tspa.. now they can claim we are both victims of terrorism from paki taliban.. then gradually go to the only solution which is to give cashmere to tsp, because the root cause of terrorists is that they are freedom fighters only.. fighting hindu bigots who are slaughtering peaceful islamists in cashmere.

the only hitch in their plan that i see is that there is NO way ttp is going to enter cashmere without getting killed.

Stop appeasing Pakistan

By Satish Chandra

24th January 2013 07:12 AM

The anger in India at the recent mutilation of its soldiers by Pakistani forces in J&K is natural and understandable. Quite unwarranted, however, are the calls for revenge and of internationalisation of the issue as also our feelings of surprise. The idea of a tit-for-tat response to the mutilations is an obvious non-starter given the Indian ethos which militates against such atrocities. Moreover, unlike the Pakistani Army which is essentially a jihadi outfit in uniform the Indian Army is much more professional with a code of conduct that makes such reprehensible moves unthinkable.

Going by our historical experience calls to haul Pakistan before the bar of international opinion, while more meaningful, do not hold much promise. In this context, one need only recall the manner in which the international community failed to address Pakistan’s aggression in Kashmir, its blatant involvement with nuclear proliferation, and its aiding and abetting several terrorist outfits. Moreover, today when the West needs Pakistan in order to facilitate its disengagement from Afghanistan it is most unlikely that the international community will bestir itself in order to address our concerns about Pakistan’s unacceptable behaviour, particularly when we continue to engage it.

There is no reason for Indians to be surprised at the acts of barbarism committed by the Pakistan Army and its modus operandi when confronted with them. These have been committed by it from time to time most notably in August 2011 and earlier during the Kargil conflict. Its propensity to engage in them arises from its affiliations to terrorist outfits since its very inception. Its standard operating procedure when confronted with its behaviour is to flatly deny the same. Lies, deceit, and subterfuge are second nature to it. This should only be expected of an army and a nation that has engaged in Mumbai like terror attacks on India for decades.

Quite clearly Manmohan Singh’s policy of engagement with Pakistan has failed in reducing the trust deficit with the latter and in securing India from the latter’s inimical designs. This is reflected in Pakistan’s recent acts of barbarism against our soldiers, frequent breaches of the ceasefire, infiltration of terrorists into J&K, repeated terrorist attacks against India even after 26/11, refusal to shut down the infrastructure of terror and to bring to justice the perpetrators of 26/11, efforts to revive the Khalistan movement, the induction of fake Indian currency, etc. This falls into a pattern as over the years all Indian endeavours to establish a meaningful relationship with Pakistan most notably the extraordinarily generous Indus Waters Treaty, the return of over 90,000 Pakistani POWs as well as the over 5,300 square miles of territory captured by India in the 1971 conflict, and the unilateral grant of MFN treatment, did not succeed and must go down as grave errors of judgments.

Engagement and generosity with Pakistan have failed because its armed forces, which have all along called the shots, have had a vested interest in maintaining an inimical relationship with India. An Indian bogey has been critical as a means of keeping their hands on the reins of power. The expectation that civil society could weaken the grip of the Pakistan armed forces on power is totally misplaced as not only is it too weak but has over the decades been brainwashed into an anti-Indian mould and, to an extent, co-opted into the establishment. This is borne out by the insensitive statements coming from Hina Rabbani Khar. Given the fact that anti-Indianism is a part of the Pakistani DNA the latter will continue with trying to bleed us no matter what gestures India makes towards Pakistan.

In view of the foregoing India needs to undertake a paradigm shift in its Pakistan policy. Policies of engagement and unilateral concessions have got us nowhere and, indeed, have proved to be counterproductive as they have only encouraged Pakistan to continue with its efforts to hurt us. Accordingly, we need to evolve a holistic approach designed to bring home to Pakistan that its pursuit of inimical policies vis-a-vis India will not be cost free and, in fact, persistence with the same could jeopardise its very existence.

Some elements of such a policy, which should be short on rhetoric but strong on action, are: the composite dialogue process may be abandoned. It has not succeeded in bridging the trust deficit and only maintained an illusion of improving ties between the two countries. Abandoning it would, moreover, be in keeping with our PM’s initial assurance, which he reneged upon, that it would only be resumed when the perpetrators of 26/11 would be brought to justice; trade liberalisation with Pakistan may be made contingent upon its according us MFN status and providing us overland access to Afghanistan; visa liberalisation should not be entertained till such time as Pakistan addresses our concerns relating to terrorism as it would open us up to all manner of undesirables from that country; India should exercise full rights over the Indus waters as legally permitted under the Indus Waters Treaty. For starters, the release of Indus water to Pakistan should be minimised by maximising the use in India of these waters as permitted under the Indus Waters Treaty. Building of storages as permitted under the treaty should be accelerated in Kashmir. A notice should be served on Pakistan for renegotiation of the treaty under which we get only 20 per cent of the waters while having 40 per cent of the catchment area; Pakistan’s faultlines must be ruthlessly exploited particularly in Balochistan. Since it already accuses us of such activity it would do us no harm to engage in it covertly; covert action, and if need be focused strikes, should be undertaken to take out terrorist elements and their supporters operating from Pakistan. Contingency plans for such action should be developed expeditiously so that following another terrorist attack on us or any unacceptable behaviour these are undertaken within a matter of hours; the armed forces may be given full tactical freedom to militarily address any Pakistani adventurism across our borders; and, at the diplomatic level India should relentlessly expose Pakistan’s involvement with human rights violations, nuclear proliferation, and terrorism. In addition, we should oppose its efforts at securing any office in international bodies.

The pursuit of such a policy alone would lend reality to the PM’s assertion that it cannot any longer be business as usual with Pakistan.

It goes without saying that such a policy must be accompanied by measures designed to tighten up internal security, ensuring that the needs of our armed forces both in the conventional and nuclear sphere are met, and ending alienation in Kashmir through our endeavours.

Satish Chandra is former High Commissioner to Pakistan.

"Surrender Singh" by AG Noorani,,but surrendering to the media says he of the "Piss in our time" brigade.

http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/lead/ma ... 336869.ece
Manmohan Singh’s abject surrender
A. G. Noorani

It was the hysterical campaign by the electronic media that led the Prime Minister to change course on the India-Pakistan dialogue after the LoC hostilities

“We know no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality.” Macaulay’s words aptly describe the fits of chauvinism that seize Indians. But this time it has exacted a toll of consequence, the result of a pathetic surrender by a man of vision.

On January 6, a Pakistani soldier was killed and another critically injured, across the Line of Control in Kashmir. Two days later, two Indian soldiers were killed across the LoC; one was beheaded, the other’s body was mutilated. On January 9, “a senior intelligence official” told DNA, “we believe that this was a local action purely in retaliation of (sic) what the raid out troops carried out in the Uri Sector.” The next day came Praveen Swami’s revealing exposé in this paper, followed by disclosures of beheadings by Indian troops in the past.
The 12 days

By its very nature, that crime is a product of local rage. It should have been settled at the level of brigadiers. As Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said on January 16: “It’s something that is within the domain of the armed forces of both sides … If it is contained at their own level, then it doesn’t create a larger political issue at the higher level.” The Directors-General of Military Operations were not asked to contain the crisis when they met on January 9. Each said his piece. On January 18, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “We want [a] good relationship with Pakistan but not at the cost of our national honour and our national interest.”

Whatever happened during those 12 days to prompt this astounding assertion by a level-headed PM? On January 9, Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar made a fair proposal. Both countries should investigate the incidents and assist each other, if necessary. This implied parity in sin and parity is anathema to us. Her suggestion of a probe by U.N. observers was a non-starter. But unilateral probes by each side, followed by a joint discussion, would have eased the tension. In Paris, as late as January 12, Salman Khurshid told The Hindu “We think this will pass.” But New Delhi had other ideas. The IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne said the same day “we may have to look at some other options for compliance.” Two days later, Army Chief General Bikram Singh declared that India “reserves the right to retaliate at the time and place of its choice” and “I expect all my commanders to be aggressive and offensive to any situation” — bad advice in a tense situation. Such threats are proper only if the killing was deliberate and was ordered at a governmental level. This was the gloss India chose to put on a local incident to which both sides surely contributed.

The decision to up the ante was taken on January 14 at a hurriedly called meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. The BJP made the most of it. Sushma Swaraj asked for 10 heads against one. Yashwant Sinha said “you cannot have peace with Pakistan.”

The Prime Minister fell in line on January 15. “After this barbaric act, there cannot be business as usual [with Pakistan].” The same day, the visa-on-arrival facility was put on hold and Pakistan’s hockey stars were sent home.

The BJP was not appeased. To Ms Swaraj, the PM’s remarks were an “echo of the tough measures we have demanded.” Arun Jaitley said on January 15: “The fact that it has taken so long for the PM to react makes me wonder if today’s reaction is out of conviction or out of compulsion. I hope this marks the burial of the Sharm-el-Shaikh line” — that the peace process should not be held hostage to the issue of terrorism.

Having drawn blood, the BJP will move for the final kill of the peace process. From 2004, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani kept attacking Dr. Singh for every conciliatory move while asking Pakistan privately not to settle with the UPA. The BJP had better offers. India now offered surrender terms: end the “brazen denial” and “bring the perpetrators to book.” This renders retreat very difficult, though its signs have appeared. The BJP will surely call it a surrender.

Ms Khar’s offer of talks, on January 16, would, as Mr. Khurshid had envisaged, raise the dialogue to the political level in view of the impasse in the DGMO talks — “discuss all concerns related to LoC with a view to reinforcing respect for the ceasefire.” The offer was not accepted.

It is sad that the Prime Minister should have allowed himself to be blown off course in these last few months. He had a noble vision. The four-point formula on Kashmir he had crafted with Pervez Musharraf satisfied the interests of all sides — no secession, no permanence to the LoC and self-rule to Kashmiris without any violation of territorial integrity. All this has been foiled; not least by his own hesitations and failure to talk to the people and explain his vision. He abandoned a course that might have brought peace to this sub-continent by a settlement of Kashmir. Now it is a tragic legacy of failure, caused wantonly by self-inflicted wounds that this man of vision will bequeath in 2014.

No leader should permit incidents to deflect him from his course. At 2.45 a.m. on October 12, 1984, a bomb went off which wrecked most of Brighton’s Grand Hotel where Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was staying for the Conservative Party Conference. Dozens, including a Minister, were injured. An MP and four others were killed. The IRA warned her, “Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once.” She did not stop the MI5 from continuing the talks with the IRA.

However, it was not to the BJP that the Prime Minister surrendered. He did so to the clamour whipped up by the electronic media. The BJP wrode piggy-back on that clamour. The resume of events from January 6 to 18 should be read in the light of the venom poured by television news anchors night after night. This raises in an acute form the issue of media influence on diplomacy. A former British Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, noted: “Like it or not, television images are what force foreign policymakers to give one of the current 25 crises in the world greater priority.” William Pfaff, a thoughtful commentator, agrees: “Foreign policy now is made chiefly in terms of its reception by television and the press.” But “the only useful debates are those that start out with a clear agreement on what the argument is about” — the precise issues — “and in which the opponent’s arguments and persons are paid respect.” This is altogether absent in “the debates” on our channels.
Ignorant anchors

The anchors themselves enter the fray, ridicule those with whom they disagree, show deference to retirees from the IB, RAW and the army, and treat Pakistanis with scant courtesy. They themselves are none too competent. An anchor of a leading channel said in Ladakh, “behind me lies the McMahon Line.” Another goes to the university in Srinagar and polls students on camera. When almost all said they were for azadi, he replied: “That is a subjective view”. His ignorance of the feelings there exposed.

Eric Louw remarks in his book The Media and Political Press that “most journalists are ill-equipped to read foreign contexts and so can be easily led by both overseas spin-doctors and domestic foreign policy bureaucrats and experts” — and TRPs.

Public opinion can veto policy, fanned by TV it can ruin it. Lippmann remarked, mass opinion “has shown itself to be a dangerous master of decisions when the stakes are life and death.” He lamented that “the work of reporters has become confused with the work of preachers, revivalists, prophets and agitators … jingoism became a criterion for [the] presentation of news.” He touched the core of the problem when he wrote “in an exact sense the present crisis of western democracy is a crisis of journalism”.

The task of the leader is to educate people about the facts of political life. He cannot shirk his duty. Abba Eban struck a fair balance. “It is unrealistic to expect political leaders to ignore public opinion. But a statesman who keeps his ear permanently glued to the ground will have neither elegance of posture nor flexibility of moment.”

Well

TTP will get slaughtered. We will lose a few of our own. Pakistan's Shias and Ahmedis will get massacred. Vast swathes of Pakistan will become pakistan with no go areas for the army where pure sharia is enforced.

I'd rather have all of the above without losing a few of our own.

I always like to point out that India has handled the most potent force in Pakistan, funded and armed by friends, the army. The TTP are welcome to attack - they will simply be slaughtered. We have been at war for several decades and the TTP is another name for pig meat to be fed to the earthworms. Allahu Ackbar.

As was the prediction on BRF.... Paki strain Polio lands in Egypt

Beeb

An emergency polio vaccination programme is to be carried out in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after samples of the virus were found in sewage.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the strain of virus matches one found in southern Pakistan.

No-one in Cairo has shown any symptoms of the disease and there have been no cases of polio in Egypt since 2004.

An anti-polio drive in Pakistan was suspended last month after nine workers were killed by suspected militants.

There has been a huge effort to eradicate polio from the three countries where it is still endemic - Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

The WHO said that samples of sewage in the Dar Es Salaam and Ezbet Hagana areas of Cairo was found to contain a strain of the virus also found in the city of Sukkur, south Pakistan.

The virus was discovered during a routine survey.

Polio killings a major setback
Health officials say the virus was either brought by a Pakistani or an Egyptian who had recently visited Pakistan.

The BBC's Islamabad reporter Aleem Maqbool, who is in Cairo, says the discovery has revived fears that polio could once again spread to countries where it has been eradicated.

In December, UN children's agency Unicef and the WHO suspended work in Sindh province in south Pakistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the north-west, following the deaths of health workers taking part in an anti-polio drive.

No group has said it carried out the killings, but the Taliban have issued threats against the UN's anti-polio efforts.

Militants have accused health workers of working as US spies and say the vaccine makes children sterile.

Taliban turning to India now is a postive development. if Indian Army can defeat them before US leaves the region, TTP will again turn on their own masters, Pak Army after their defeat

So the planned afghan campaign of Pak Army / taliban combo after US exit will get delayed and will be messy

Pakistani Taliban vow to attack BJP-backed terror camps in Kashmir
For all attacks on any Hindus in Kashmir or elsewhere in India by Pakistani terrorists, Viceroy Sonia Gandhi, the Local Manager of Phoren Sarkars, would now bear personal responsibility, being the chief of the set-up under which the Deputy-Viceroy Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shri Sushilkumar Shinde serve.

That is the legacy of UPA-2, an Islamo-Christianist Mafia Regime.

For accuracy,it is Vicereine Soniaji!

Just checking into the opposite viewpoint,in the "Yawn",a columnist, former for.sec.Naji Sheikh, has come to the conclusion that this entire episode is to do with keeping the IA in Kashmir and not repealing the special powers act,by stoking tension on the LOC and in the media. He also says that India should be thankful because 400,000 Paki troops are not on the Indian border!
This un-worthy has totally forgotten the pasting that Paki troops are receiving from the US and the anti-Paki Talibs who not too long ago had advanced into the Swat valley .In fact if India had only desired to be mischievous, we could've created absolute havoc on the LOC and within Pak ourselves.

The main point why there is tension on the LOC has been completely ignored by him,the continual cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pak which is why the IA is in Kashmir in the first place. This inconvenient fact is why paki talking heads obliquely refer to as being inevitable unless India resolves the Kashmir "dispute",,,according to Paki terms one supposes with the blessings of the Yanquis.

The number of Pakistani cases is way too low. One, there are no proper medical facilities to report on any occurrence or outbreak. Two, a country which has not conducted a census survey in the last 15 years (only five census surveys in the last 65 years) cannot be expected to have accurate numbers in this case. Third, many, many areas of Pakistan are no-go areas for GoP and so the number indicated above cannot be trusted.

We have to keep on pounding any TSPA/Jihadi presence in PoK with howitzers, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, etc. and use intel to find their hideouts.

45-50 kms of the LoC, there should be zero Pakistani Army presence, and we should not let any camp of theirs last more than 2-3 days. That should be our target! That should be the new normal.

What is wrong with high-accuracy incessant firing without any cease-fire? With high-precision we can cut down on costs over the long-term.

Book Launch of Eating Grass, for making the Pakistani Bomb - Woodrow Wilson Center by a fmr PA officer involved in the programme.

He says that it was completely an indigenous programme, the Chinese help was minimal. The more the American sanctions, the greater the resolve to make the weapon. The programme started only after c. 1972. The TNWs are centrally controlled under the NCA. He says that any Cold Start by India would make Pakistan unleash the TNWs. They are not under the control of field commanders. He also says that India cannot think of attacking Pakistan, like when a Mumbai-like terror attack happens, and hope to terminate the conventional war and on its own terms without it going nuclear. He says that with the 4 Pu production facilities coming up in TSP, it would not stop making bombs.

US-Pakistan Moving Out of Tense Phase: US Official

That means danger for India.
At a Pentagon briefing, Lt Gen. James Terry, Deputy Commander of the US Forces in Afghanistan, also said on Wednesday that after 2014, the United States would focus on providing `right resources’ to the Afghans so that they could hold territory from insurgents.

“From a military perspective, we are moving away from the tense phase with Pakistan,” said Gen Terry when asked about relations with Islamabad which nose-dived after a series of incidents last year put the two allies on a collision course.

The general, however, conceded that a trilateral mechanism, which aims to improve cooperation among the Pakistani, Afghan and US militaries will `take time to get in shape’.

But the US commander also noted that Pakistan and Afghanistan were now talking directly to each other on border issues, which was a good sign.

He said the cooperation centres the United States helped establish at Pak-Afghan border were also a mechanism to address these issues.

The process of flag meeting of Nato, Afghan and Pakistani military officials had also started.

The US general noted that Afghanistan and Pakistan were also talking to each other on political levels, which had a `potential’ to improving their ties.

Responding to a question, Gen Terry said it was difficult to say how many insurgents were still operating along the Pak-Afghan border, although some estimated them to be around 20,000.
