Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan yesterday proclaiming that the military and power elites of her country are not conniving in helping the US violate their own sovereignty and indeed the power elites of her country disapprove of visits by the national bird:

US drone strikes: There's 'no wink and nod' from Pakistan, ambassador says
Poor fellow. He is the first ambassador to lie to his (own) country!

Normally ambassadors are supposed to lie to others.

Bazaar Bomb Claimed by Taliban Kills at Least 11 in Northwest Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A car bomb ripped through a town bazaar in northwestern Pakistan’s tribal belt on Friday, killing 11 people and wounding at least 31, local officials said. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility.
“People were leaving a mosque and going to the bazaar when a remote-controlled device planted in a vehicle went off,” Fazl-i-Qadir, an administrator for the Orakzai tribal district, said by telephone.

X Posted from the ISI History and Discussion thread.

The uniformed Jihadi’s of the Military in particular the Aabpara based Inter Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI / ISID) who undersee when not overseeing the running of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are annoyed with the Toronto Sun because of articles by Tarek Fatah and have blockd access to its website:
Pakistani-Canadian columnist Tarek Fatah, an unsparing critic of Pakistan who writes for the Toronto Sun, expressed in his own words that the decision to block the Sun‘s website “is definitely politically motivated and it does no credit to the current administration in the national capital Islamabad.”

Fatah further said, “I have had it confirmed for me by an extremely senior member of the government. I have the tweet where he outlined why the firewall has been imposed.”

“The tweet says, when asked why the Sun has been blocked: ‘Your criticism and exposure of Fauji-Jihadi shenenigans. Decision from Aabpara.’”

Fatah interpreted this tweet as a nod towards the military. He added, “That clearly shows that this banning decision has been made by the Pakistan military. It is they who really run Pakistan.”

Nawaz Sharif Urges GoP to Take Taliban Talks Offer Seriously - DAWN
The chief of Pakistan’s main opposition party on Thursday urged the government to immediately take result-oriented steps in response to an offer of peace talks by the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants.

In a statement issued in Lahore, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said that the Pakistani Taliban’s offer of peace talks should be taken seriously, and that the government should not waste any time in taking concrete steps in that direction.

In a video released earlier this month, the TTP had expressed its willingness to hold talks with the government on the condition that leaders of PML-N, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the Jamaat-i-Islami provide guarantees to make the exercise fruitful.

Earlier this week, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman welcomed the Taliban’s “positive” demands for peace talks, and recommended using the platform of the tribal areas’ grand jirga for peace negotiations with the outlaws.

In his statement today, Sharif, however, rejected the offer of acting as a guarantor. He said that his party supported the offer of dialogue by the militants, although, keeping in mind the current government’s track record, nobody could insure negotiations.

The PML-N chief added that war and violence was not the solution to any problem.

He urged the stakeholders to initiate talks with the militants in the greater interest of the country.

To talk or not to talk
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is ready to talk to the government but only under certain conditions, the militant group's spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said in a video message earlier this month.

The conditions include the release of Taliban leaders Muslim Khan, Haji Umar and Maulana Mehmood as a confidence building measure. The group also wants politicians Fazlur Rehman, Munawar Hassan and Nawaz Sharif to become guarantors.

"When your enemy wants to talk, it is always good to talk," a military general said, asking not to be named. "I would never close a door. Talking does not mean defeat."

The Taliban named Fazlur Rehman, Munawar Hassan and Nawaz Sharif as guarantors

"How can we talk to them?" another senior army general said. "We have tried talking, and we have seen how they used that time and space to reorganize and wipe out all the tribal elders of the area. But if the government decides to talk, we will stand behind them, after briefing them." He said it was a clever move by the Taliban to make the offer on the media, because they were vying for leverage.

"We are too busy with other things but if there is a serious offer, we will consult all the stakeholders to initiate a dialogue, and that includes the military," a presidential source said.

"We have responded positively to the government's offer for peace talks, but they do not seem to be serious," the TTP spokesman said. "We still feel we should give a chance to restoration of peace through dialogue."

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is an umbrella organization of militant groups led by commanders who had fought in Afghanistan. It was formed when 13 Taliban groups united under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud in 2007. The Pakistani government froze the TTP's bank account on August 25, 2008.

The organization is now headed by Hakimullah Mehsud (chief), Waliur Rehman Mehsud (deputy chief), Manghal Bagh (chief of Lashkar-e-Islam), Maulana Fazullah (TTP Swat chief), Akhunzada Aslam Farooqi (Taliban chief in Orakzai Agency), Omar Khalid (Mohmand Agency), Abu Bakar (Bajaur Agency), and Noor Jamal (Kurram Agency). It has a strong affiliation with Al Qaeda chief Dr Aymen Al Zawahiri.

"If one side wants everything, negotiations don't work"

Fazlur Rehman responded to the offer cautiously. "We have always advocated for talks and finding a middle way out of this mess," he said. "I am ready to mediate," he said, "but I don't have the mandate or capacity to do that right now, until all the stakeholders decide on a common policy."

But Sarwat Ejaz Qadri, chief of Sunni Tehrik, believes the talks will be counterproductive. "Our workers have been hounded and killed by the Taliban. Thousands of soldiers and civilians have been targeted. Talking to them will be counterproductive, until there is a full-fledged military operation."

"I do not think the Taliban will have much to say," said Michael Semple, who has negotiated with the Taliban in Afghanistan on behalf of the European Union. "The TTP's current pattern of violence does not seem calculated to end on the negotiation table," he said. "A full-blown campaign of sectarian violence is not a propitious prelude to political engagement. I don't think it would work out or is serious. It is not even worth pursuing as long as they remain at the current stage of their campaign."

A Western intelligence source in Afghanistan also said the surprise offer from the Taliban was eyewash. "Pakistani military officials had been engaged with the TTP to open up but they traditionally never have kept their word, especially with regards to the Arabs, Al Qaeda and foreign fighters," he said. "We see the offer as a pressure tactic and a PR effort from the TTP to come reasonable or sane, which they are not. Pakistanis on the other hand should keep up the pressure and start the North Waziristan operation."

Pakistani analysts have their own concerns. "What are their demands and what can you give them?" said Professor Ijaz Khan from Peshawar University. "I do not expect much to come out of it. Negotiations work when both sides can gain something. If one side wants everything, they do not work."

Negotiations also work, he said, when one side has lost and needs face saving. "Has either side publicly or privately accepted defeat or their inability to fight?"

The highlighted part is important. When ever the Americans ask the paki dogs to start North Waziristan operation, they enact this drama of "talks" with Taliban.

I thought there was only one Saab-2000 delivered to la la land, because the pakistanis could not pay for the rest of the bunch. They had one with a mock radar on top for training and showing off before the real maal was delivered. Misphortunately, el-bakistan couldn't cough up the moolah to the ouiropeans.

Wow! Have to hand it to the Pakis to say things that the US will love to hear. This is just the sort of stuff that makes American Kerrorists fall for Paki charms and imagine that Pakis are doing all they can.

With shitland being a back money/cash economy, freezing the TTPs account is like someone claiming that he was attacked by ten men and that he farted once in retaliation. The net effect of that and that of freezing the TTPs account would be one and the same.

Tell that to the Kerrorist supporters.

Spying Pakistani Style

By Ali K Chishti

It was an evening of celebration held by a wealthy businessman from Karachi to welcome a major European diplomat. The diplomat was impressed by the party and instantly hit off with Zohaib who could give complex to any male model in the world.

Zohaib expressed his charms like a male peacock making his moves to impress his female counterparts. The diplomat was a homosexual and Zohaib the model on a certain agency’s payroll. In reality, it was a set-up by a certain intelligence agency of Pakistan. The poor diplomat only got to know about it when it was too late. He was asked to report back to his country to avoid possible embarrassment.

Welcome to the world of espionage and spying, Pakistani style, where there’re no rules and only punters. “Everything’s legit until it gets caught,” told a former spy chief. While the Pakistani intelligence community’s achievements are highly overrated, it could be said with certain audacity that within the limited resources, they do produce the desired results. Take for instance the British military attaché to Pakistan, Brig Andrew Durcan, who was removed because he had an affair with a certain Pakistani defence academic who worked for the Pakistani intelligence agencies, or the highly publicised second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, Madhuri Gupta, who was arrested in New Delhi earlier this year for working for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). And there are several untold stories.

While our intelligence agencies have undoubtedly learned the art of espionage, human intelligence and clandestine operations, we lag behind in technology, which, as per the intelligence community, is “a huge turn-off”. This brings us to an infamous but not widely reported case of the bugging of the Pakistan High Commission in Knightsbridge, London by the British intelligence agency, MI5, which bugged the entire high commission via a contractor and it got exposed only after the contractor sold the story to a British tabloid. The embassy was debugged soon afterwards.

The biggest question which haunts every Pakistani is, “Is the Big Brother watching us?” Not really but, “Big Brother is definitely listening”. Daily Times could confirm that the Pakistani intelligence agencies keep a tab on everything, from our emails to our messages. And although the Americans had spent millions to improve and train our intelligence officials but in terms of technology, we are still as per an intelligence wala told us, “Very second generation and heavily reliant on human intelligence”. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) had only recently acquired advance surveillance equipment from the Americans where they could now even track SMS, mobile calls and precisely pinpoint GPS coordinates. The FIA, which is supported by a very strong interior minister, wants the equipment from the IB, and the two are involved in a tug of war.

The job description of various intelligence agencies is not clear and while the ISI’s job description is to “look after external threats”, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) is warranted to take care of internal security and the MI after military-related affairs. But in reality, “the ISI does everything, MI does everything and so does the IB”, a security expert Jameel Ahmed explains. A Daily Times investigations reveals that the ISI is entirely and understandably deputed to counter the TTP, al Qaeda and jihadi nexus, while it’s the Military Intelligence that looks after the politicians’ manipulating and threatening business. The IB acts as a go-between. And there’s no identification part or coordination between any intelligence agency in Pakistan, which is dangerous. So if someone says he’s from the MI, he’s possibly from the ISI and if someone says he’s from the army, he’ll probably be an IB official.

After 9/11, the Pakistani government did take huge steps in actually boosting up its intelligence community and it was none other than then president General (r) Musharraf who, according to reports, cracked down on the ISI where it is said that almost 60 percent of the ISI’s strength and at least two of its wings faced the axe due to their links with the Taliban. The ISI DG at that time, General Mehmood, was booted out too. Things after 9/11 got so murky because of Musharraf’s new team that the new ISI DG, Lt Gen Ehsanul Haq, directly asked Musharraf, “Am I being given the charge because of the Americans?” the general’s reply was in negative.

So do intelligence agencies work freelance? Or do they have a separate agenda? The unanimous reply from all quarters is “no”. There’s a chain of command and that now almost all intelligence agencies had strengthened their counter-intelligence wings, but everything is not rosy. Folks from the IB, who solved the Nishtar Park bombing, were assassinated in Karachi, which confirms that there’s penetration within the intelligence community of those who sympathise with the jihadis. Since 9/11, counter-intelligence wings at all intelligence agencies are made stronger to keep a tab on radicalisation and freelancers and it has produced results. While the newly formed counter-terrorism board is a good step by the government to actually help all intelligence agencies to exchange information under one shadow authority, what need’s to be done is real technological investment into our intelligence agencies with greater transparency.

To conclude, there needs to be a massive change of culture within Pakistani society, where: the harassment part needs to be sorted out, there’s greater transparency where a section of the press for local journalists needs to be given access to information too. On the government’s part: it needs to invest heavily in intelligence agencies and make sure its keeps the agencies “a-political”.

From Such gup in TFT
Misbah ul Haq, the current captain of our cricket team, put his foot down when the Pakistan Cricket Board suggested that he take on Inzi as the team's coach. "Over my dead body", Misbah is supposed to have said, or words to that effect. It transpired that before he became captain, Misbah had been harassed by Inzi and the Tableeghi gang in the cricket team to say his prayers in a certain way. Apparently, the Tableeghi gang led by Inzi disapproved of Misbah's Barelvi sensibilities and the way he said his namaz, insisting that he do it the Deobandi-Tableeghi way. Misbah stuck to his guns, and his own preferred way of praying, and attracted their ire. When his turn came to lord it over the rest, Misbah made his views clear to the PCB and said no to Inzi.

Old news(from 2010) but worth remembering :

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/spy-ta ... acher.html

The audacity of Hamid Gul
Everything that is terrifying about Washington’s relationship with Pakistan can be summed up in the Wikileaks documents on Hamid Gul, a former chief of the ISI, Islamabad's intelligence service.
If the documents are to be believed -- and the uncorroborated U.S. intelligence reports must be read with caution -- Gul has taken a direct hand in quarterbacking attacks against U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan.

Gul calls the reports "fiction and nothing else."

In mid-December 2006, one report says, Gul met with “senior members of the Taliban leadership in Nowshara, Pakistan,” during which he said he had dispatched three insurgents to Kabul to carry out attacks with improvised explosive devices during the celebration of Eid, a Muslim holiday.

“Gul instructed two of the individuals to plant IEDs along the roads frequently utilized by Government of Afghanistan and ISAF vehicles,” the intelligence report says. “The third individual is to carry out a suicide attack utilizing a suicide vest against" Afghan government or NATO targets.

“Make the snow warm in Kabul,” he told the bombers, according to the report. “Set Kabul aflame.”

“Gul reportedly has received approximately 50 of these mines in order for them to carry out their operation,” the report said.

In January 2008 Gul also directed the Taliban to kidnap high-level United Nations personnel in Afghanistan to trade for captured Pakistani soldiers, according to another report.

“The (Taliban) group led by (Qari) Naqibullah,” it said, “is working with the coordination of retired Pakistani General Hamid Gul. This group is targeting un vehicles marked with black lettering, which Naqibullah believes is an indicator that the vehicle is carrying high level UN officials or members of the UN intelligence service.”

“Naqibullah,” it added, “has been instructed by Gul to place a higher priority in securing the release of the Pakistani soldiers.”
One of those Wikileak documents:

But if another U.S. intelligence report released by Wikileaks is to be believed, Gul has also been working hand-in-glove with al-Qaeda.

On Jan. 5, 2009, the report says, insurgents in the Pakistani tribal zone of South Waziristan met to discuss taking revenge for the death of a Taliban commander killed in a CIA drone attack.

“Also in attendance were three unidentified older Arab males, who were considered important” because they were accompanied by “approximately 20 Arab bodyguards,” said the report, which originated with the U.S. Army’s Task Force Castle engineering group.

“Hamid Gul, a former member of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was in attendance at the meeting also,” the report said. “Hamid Gul was described as being an older man and a very important person from ISI.”

Gul “encouraged (their) leaders to focus their operation inside of Afghanistan in exchange for the government of Pakistan's security forces turning a blind eye to the presence of (their) commanders and fighters in Pakistan,” the report said.

Gul also had a tip for al-Qaeda and the insurgents: ”The aerial threats in the area were controlled from the airport in Wana,” the largest town in South Waziristan.
Hamid Gul should take the drone attacks personally for sure :D And yeah major mole was also present, whoever it was.

It is but natural for one to think their army is the better in terms of quality (is one difficult piece to measure). This core commander stresses that TSPA'S generals are much, much better than Indian counterparts. I wonder what could be this guyl's basis for such claims that he seems so certain? What speaks better than success and failures of TSPA's generals in terms of war planning, leadership etc? none of the Indian general ever bragged about their 1:10 strength, 1971 battles were well planned, 1965 war, even though this guy thinks they won, none of their objectives met because of IA, Kargil was a failure because of foolishness and lack of anticipation of IA's determination. Because of clever planning during 1971, PNS Ghazi met it's watery grave, and not to forget 90k prisoners and TSP breaking up. So much for this big mouthed core commander's claims of quality of TSPA generals over Indian. Their generals don't even have the integrity of accepting the dead soldiers during Kargil and this guy is very certain of quality of TSPA's generals. They can't even fight a rag-tag groups like TTP, each time they fought TTP, TSPA got it's ass whooped and they ended signing 'peace deals'. None of the quality this guy bragged about is visible in above examples, they are certainly very good at sending their lower ranks first to be fodder, thus proving that their generals lead from behind, so much braggadocio of this general. Hot gas. Empty vessels make lot of sound.

I guess now we can spare the old tale about the Mexican Army and instead insert the work "Paki Army" instead...."all generals and no soldiers.."! Read this expose about the "Fascist Army".
