These are the overground Naxals Indians have to tackle with extreme prejudice -- it is amazing the access they have in the English media.
Mahendra Karma and his cynical form of vigilantism
For long, Karma often resembled a wolf that preyed on the tribals of southern Chhattisgarh, many from his own tribe

Eyewitness recalls Naxal attack: 'They dragged everyone out'
A Congress leader, who was with former Union minister Vidyacharan Shukla during the Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, has claimed that the ambush specifically targeted state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and senior leader Mahendra Karma, both of whom died in the strike.

"Both Patel and Karma were the target of Naxals," said Daulat Rohra, Congress leader and a close aide of Shukla.
"Suddenly, firing stopped and ultras approached the vehicles, asking for Nand Kumar Patel and Mahendra Karma," Rohra said.

"They started searching every vehicle, calling out the names of Patel and Karma, asking them to step out," he added.

At this point, former Member of Legislative Assembly Uday Mudaliyar, several other leaders and policemen were killed in gunfire.

"One by one, they dragged everyone out of the vehicles. One group of Naxals took away Patel, his son Dinesh Patel and Dantewada MLA Kawasi Lakhma some distance into the jungle, but they released Lakhma later.

“They also started asking for Mahendra Karma's son but when Karma himself came out of the group and revealed his identity, they took him aside and shot him dead, pumping in nearly 50 rounds," said Rohra.

"Afterwards, Naxals fled into the forests, shouting Lal Salaam,” he said.
So Karma, Patel and his son are the targets. Jogi got he wanted

SC ban on Salwa Judum not implemented: Nandini Sundar
The Supreme Court had directed the state government to investigate all previously “inappropriately or incompletely investigated instances of alleged criminal activities of Salwa Judum”, file appropriate FIRs and diligently prosecute the guilty.

But no one has been prosecuted, says Sundar. “Somebody like Mahendra Karma should have been in jail a long time ago,” she adds.

Has the Supreme Court verdict impacted the government’s response at all? “No. For one thing, we had explicitly named Mahendra Karma and shown from police diaries and the Collector’s monthly reports of his involvement. Right from the beginning we had shown the involvement of the Chhattisgarh government in what was going on. It wasn’t a people’s movement at all.”

Describing the response by the state government to the Supreme Court’s order to disband the 6500 “barely literate” and inadequately trained tribal special police officers to fight the Maoists, as a “slap in the face of the court”, Sundar says “The SPOs were supposed to be disbanded. Instead, they were constituted into an armed constabulary force from the date of the judgment. The Chhattisgarh Act says very clearly that everyone who was an SPO on the date of the judgement would now be considered an armed constabulary force and they were given better guns and more money.”
Look how aggressive this looney comes out on the day he was brutally murdered. Not even a day to let their loves ones mourn their dead.

Can you please educate us on how ajit jogi gained. How does he plan on winning the elections without these leaders who were killed or injured. He may have blessings of Sonia, but to make jogi the cm, Cong has to win elections first. How do you think jogi plans on doing that, with this attack, congress leaders won't even campaign in the interior districts anymore.

This is like saying how does Advani benefit by becoming the head of the BJP, as for him to become the PM, the party has to win the national elections first. Ajjit Jogi has gained immensely by becoming the tallest leader of Congress in Chattisgarh. BJP is not going to stay in power for ever.

One should not underestimate how long range such plans can be. To get Sonia ruling over India, it was necessary, after ensnaring Rajiv, for Sanjay, Indira and Rajiv to be removed, each in suspicious circumstances. The fact that Jogi's aide was dragged out and then let off is certainly a point to ponder. Elections can be managed through EVMs.

^^ Just sympathy vote. CONgis already started politicizing this murders: Bandhs, blaming BJP ... The main focus is to make the economic performance of Raman Singh irrelevant in the election and to some extent in MP too.

Look... The Chattisgarh Naxal movement is completely led by AP naxal leaders who are allies of CON party in 2004 & they were all driven into other states to mess around with non-CON Govts.

Look how well the CON looters, Bhardwaj, Hegde undermined Yeddi who was getting too powerful in K'taka. They realized that letting any BJP leader to govern peacefully means it will be the end of CONgis in that state. It was a long term plan. Yeddi could have silently gone into vanvas for a year and could have demolished their plan but he has too much ego and walked right into their trap.

This is exactly what is being discussed -- Congress, many bureacrats and the corrupt elite (NGOs, professors, journalists) are Naxal sympathisers and that is why they are being talked about.

Because of this secularism nonsense gifted by Nehru, money pouring into tribal areas from White Christians is not stopped and there is no curb on missionaries who have infiltrated deep into the forests to brainwash innocent, isolated villagers and tribals. They keep creating hatred among them for Hindus and India and anything done to curb their anti-national activities by the government is publicized in the world as an assault on the secular fabric of the country.

As a result, Hindus have become paralyzed and keep getting butchered in their own country in Kashmir, in North East, in Chattisgarh, in Orissa, in AP, in West Bengal ... When will we learn to secure ourselves in our own homeland by getting rid of Nehruvian shiboleths?n It seems Nehru is still assaulting Hindus -- the people he hated so much -- from his grave.

The entire naxal attack drama is to win Chhattisgarh elections by Jogi and then he and EJ gangs can rule that state. Loss of Chatisgarh and MP is a must to arrest the momentum in favour of BJP before 2014 lok sabha elections. INC already came to conclusion that Raman Singh is difficult to defeat and did this drama. In MP there will be other kind of drama. Diggi Raja and Sindhia are already planning their dramas their and the vote gap in MP is always small to give wing to INC with a small amount of swing. May be EVM magic? I do not know. I have seen from firsthand how Diggi Raja managed his second term Assembly elections. Great cheating thing.

Every anti-Indian movement has the support of Professor.
She is married to Siddarth Varadarajan of Al-Hundi . So definitely part of the Commie - JNU/DSE/ ding dong clique of Dilli Academics , with no remorse of the economic genocide committed by their institutions and and no responsibility for the enduring poverty, backwardness and social indices of the very people whom she claims to bat for .

But that apart, she does have a point in saying that the Salwa Judum was a terrible mistake, did a good job in taking it to court (along with Ramachandra Guha and others) and she was quite clear on TV yesterday that she does not hold that Salwa Judum as a justification for the recent Maoist outrage and quite clearly she has said multiple times that she does not identify, support or endorse the Maoists.

The trouble with her line (and also that of Ramachandra Guha in today's Al-Hundi Op-Ed), of leaders reaching out "directly" to the people (launching Sonia , Manmohan and a division of doctors nurses and teachers at the Bastar folks rather than planes and CRPF) is that unless you control the ground and keep out the Maoists, it is a fool's errand. And yes, cleaning out the ground will require taking on the Maoists and wiping them out.

Far far too long, this "Maoists are misguided robinhoods" and a paternalistic attitude and division within the govt and lack of intellectual clarity (the result of the NAC Jholawala and Nandini Sundar types) on whether a soft appeasment policy for the Naxals (useful in times of elections in using the Naxal's help in winning elections , as I suspect a section of the Congress was wanting to do) brought about a half fight with one arm tied against the Naxals.

The south didn't suffer these fools. When the Naxals tried getting into Dharmapuri forests in the mid 80s, Walter Dewaram wiped the floor with those kinds. Same in Theni hills, and also the KTK govt action in the western ghats and even Kerala under Karunakaran. Andhra finally got it's act together and wiped them out.

The agenda of Orissa and Bihar are waffling (hoping to make separate peace with the Maoists, that is like a peace with the the Taliban, futile.. and wont work, they will discover the hard way). South nipped the Naxal business in the bud (okay, they let Veerappan bloom though).

This entire episode reeks of the Congress leaders throwing caution to the winds , all pointers to the fact that the Congress guys in Bastar hoped that the Naxals regarded them as if not as friendlies , far less hostile than the BJP and hoped to get immunity against attacks by the Naxals (signals being Binayak Sen in planning commission etc) , but the Naxals true to form struck venomously (a snake bites after all).

Now atleast senior Cong leadership will be shed of all the blinkers put on them by the NAC / Jholawala/Nandini Sundar kind of appeasement / soft approach crowd and hopefully Orissa, Bihar and Bengal too learn their lessons from what happened to the congress and the fight against the Maoists is now resolute, total and with intellectual clarity.

Original cause
Time and again we hear one word again and again from the naxal sympathizers and human right activist – ORGINAL CAUSE.. After any naxal attack its same scenario on TV and Newspaper… Few security experts will come down heavily on naxals and the policy of government and naxal sympathizers will say we condemn the attack and pray for those who were killed in the attack, and then for rest of the time they will debate about the ORIGINAL CAUSE.. and the justify the menace.. Now one may wonder what is original cause?? According to these intellectuals( Pseudo), we as civil society and the government failed to fulfill our duties towards the tribal and left them out of development.. We cheated them with their resource and left them high and dry.. Atrocities were committed on tribals.. We looted them of their resources and gave them nothing.. So now they are forced to take arms and thus their violence is justified.. As they have an ORGINAL CAUSE.. Now let’s examine their points one by one..
a) Tribals were left out of development..
They say that we as a nation left tribals out of the process of development.. Its partly true that in our early years after independence our great Pm SHRI SHRI Nehru je had this policy that, tribal culture must be preserved and left out of this so called modernity drive.. This way they were left out.. But from 80’s efforts were made to change the status quo, which got serious after 2001.. But who opposed this drive of modernity most?? The naxals.. Why?? Because if tribals and villagers taste the devoplment, they get good roads, good schools and proper medical facilities then they won’t sympathize with naxals anymore.. So naxals made sure they no government scheme reach the villagers and they remain poor and thus loyal to them.. So again who is to be blamed??

b) We cheat tribals, We loot their resource.
Next set of allegation is that we as state and nation loot their ( tribals) resource and don’t give them their share.. Now what is tribal resource??? It’s said that since tribals lived in forest for centuries, so its resources belong to tribals.. Again only partly correct.. resources belong to state and not individuals.. It’s true that when we bring in industries and mines peoples are displaced and it’s the responsibility of state to provide proper employment and compensation to those who are displaced but if we don’t bring in factories, mines, how are we going to improve their condition??? We have seen that in last decade thousands of crores have been pumped into those areas in name of different schemes, but the end result is same.. So what’s the way out??? It’s by providing them proper education, good roads, good hospitals and employment.. For employment we need to bring in industries and mines.. And then ensure that those factories and mines do not just work for profit but also help in uplifting of those areas.. Look at Gujrat or any other developed state.. Even in Chhattisgarh look at Bhilai, look at korba.. This is the model they followed and brought development and peace.. But here they want development minus any road, school and industries.. How they won’t tell us. In fact if we take their argument a little further then it can be said that development has eluded almost more the 50% of population of this country.. Go to any village and kasba and you will find that more than 60% of the population lives under poverty line.. They don’t have basic facilities. After more than 60 years of independence we have not provided them with clean water to drink.. So should these villagers also take arms in their hand and start killing innocents? Most of us are dis-satisfied with our NETA’S, what should we do?? Take arms in our hands and start killing??? Will they come to defend us if we do so??? Their logic is nothing but pure non-sense..

c) Innocents are tortured and killed by State.
I often wonder, how this argument has become the universal argument of those who sympathize with any form of violence.. Let’s face it we are fighting a kind of war.. We are fighting anti insurgency and as history tells us fighting an insurgency is never easy, nor cheap, and is full of blood.. Look at Israel, look at Afghanistan, look at Punjab, loot at Kashmir.. Everywhere you will find collateral damage. Blood is spilled, unfortunately few innocents die.. But are they killed only by security forces??? The answer is NO, a big NO.. More innocents are killed by Naxals and terrorist.. Every 2nd day there are reports that, naxals killed so and so suspecting him of being a mukhbir ( SPY).. I never heard any word from any human right activist in support of thoses men and women.. I often wonder why they only talk about the blood of naxals and those so called innocent’s.. In April 2010, 76 CRPF men were butchered; no one shed a drop of tear for them?? They were not humans?? They also had families, kids and emotions and last we checked the colour of their bold was also red.. Last month an inspector of greyhound of AP police was caught by naxals.. He was brutally tortured, his limbs were chopped off and then he was killed.. why don’t the human right activist came in support of his human rights??? Was he not a human?? All this human right activist sitting in their comfy homes and AC office can make such noise only because men in uniform shed their blood to protect us from criminals, terrorist and naxals.. Can they go to kashmire say in Kupwara or Baramulla or in Bastar and then talk about the human rights of those killed by terrorist and naxals???

This theory of ORGINAL CAUSE is very dangerous, every crime in this world can be justified using this theory.. Please forgive for the example am giving.. One can even justify crimes like rape and murder using this theory of ORGINAL CAUSE.. One can say the he is a man he has certain needs and lust and we as society failed him by not fulfilling his needs so he satisfied his need and raped… So there is an ORGINAL CAUSE.. One can say that the other person did hurt him and we as society failed to give him proper justice so he killed the other men.. Here again there is an ORGINAL CAUSE.. Every terrorist organization in this world claims to have an ORGINAL CAUSE.. Deeds of past can never support the violence of present. Otherwise we can never condemn any form of violence be it personal like rape or murder or against a community such as riots or against humanity such as terrorism and naxalism if we fall in this trap of ORGINAL CAUSE.. These human rights activist often quote Gandhi ji but forget his most basic principle “ Means are as important as end” whereas by this ORGINAL CAUSE theory they propagate “ Means justify the end” so violence of one section ( Naxals and terrosit) is justified… After all they have an ORGINAL CAUSE…

So we have a story thousands of years old! Exploitation and violent reaction,"Spartacus" brought into the 21st century. But who will be our Crassus, who will rid us of this Maoist menace?

Most people have little sympathy for dead Congressmen. They belong to a party that has raped and ruined the nation, especially during the two regimes of the UPA. Congressmen and women speak sanctimoniously for the tribals, the dalits, the poor and hungry, but they loot the nation in trillions ,under the watchful benevolent eye of the mendicant of snake-oil,Dr.Singh,who dutifully covers up their tracks of guilt.

Yet,an attack such as this latest outrage is against the Indian state. It shows the utter contempt that the Naxals,Maoists-whichever name one prefers, have for the Indian state and its laws. Therefore, they must submit to the law of the jungle, and those who live by the sword, must die by it.They have sowed the wind, they must reap the whirlwind, the grim reaper and his instruments of death, from the air and on the ground. The lame excuses of not using the armed forces to root out this ideological force that belongs to our most powerful enemy,China, would be tantamount to a dereliction of duty.It is clear that the tactics and methods used bu the Home MInistry have failed us.It does not matter if we use the elephant to kill the army of soldier ants, but they must be exterminated down to the last combatant. It is only then that reconstruction of the lives of the peoples in the affected regions can begin. It is how the most vicious and dangerous terrorist force in the world, the LTTE was defeated ....to the last man!

Do you know the truth about how we won out Independence? A Britisher of the ruling elite who ran India ,was once being lectured about how India won its Independence through non-violence and the tactics of Gandhiji. He famously snorted out loudly, with words to this effect."Gandhi? Who cared about him, that half-naked fakir! It was Bose that really worried us.Once Indian troops ceased to obey our commands, the empire was lost."

An historical anecdote:

Why the British didn’t Kill Netaji Bose in 1943
Published on: January 23, 2011 - 11:56

By Pheroze Khareghat

During World War II, the British, as symbolised by Churchill, feared Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, more than Mahatma Gandhi, as Bose’s plans for Indian Freedom struck at the very foundation of Britain’s Indian Empire namely the loyalty of the Indian soldiers.

Bose spoke the language of Indian manhood and heroic self confidence and he was committed to waging war to the hilt to win that struggle of independence for India! Bose’s famous and inspiring words became an Indian national maxim "Give me blood and I will give you independence". But when in 1943, they had a chance to kill Netaji, they decided against it. Why?

It all depended on their evaluation of what this murder would cost. Not Indian anger, but the fear of Germany finding out that the British had penetrated their secret service codes!

How? It all happened thus. At the start of the Second World War, Britain had succeeded in acquiring the most important code machine of the Germans, known as the Enigma. With the Enigma, the British were virtually aware of whatever the Germans were planning. And in early 1943, the British intercepted the full programme of the German plan to send Netaji Bose to Japan. He was to travel by submarine from Kiel in Northern Germany to few miles off the coast of the Portuguese held Madagascar, where a Japanese submarine would take Netaji into its holds and take him to Sabang in Indonesia for onward journey to Japan… a total journey of 15000 kilometres. It required just one British battleship to way lay the German submarine off the coast of Madagascar and send it to destruction, thus killing the Indian Leader.

But they did not do it, as the British Secret Service warned Churchill, that if the Germans found out, that even if such highly confidential messages were being monitored and acted upon, they would suspect that the British had the Enigma and would change all their codes, thus making it impossible for the British to spy on them.

But in Indian history the 90 day 15000 kilometres long submarine boat journey of Netaji from Kiel in Germany to Sabang in Indonesia is a sacred chapter.

When in May 1942, after his escape from India, Netaji Bose met Adolf Hitler in Germany, Hitler had suggested to him that it would take at least another one or two years before Germany could gain direct influence in India, and while Japan’s influence, in view of its spectacular successes in Southeast Asia, could come in a few months, Bose should negotiate with the Japanese. He suggested that he could place a German submarine at his disposal which would take him around the Cape of Good Hope.

Meanwhile in Japan, General Iwakuro, Head of the Japanese Secret Service Department known as Iwakuro Kikan, managed to convince his government that it was not possible to raise a real Indian National Army (INA) without the personal assistance and guidance of Netaji Bose. He, therefore, requested his Government to make arrangements for Netaji Bose to come from Berlin to Singapore and take over the personal leadership of the INA. He was informed by his government that it was not possible for Bose to come as the journey was most hazardous and that there was only five per cent chance of his coming through it alive. First it was decided to use a plane belonging to the Lufthansa Company to airlift Bose from Germany to Japan via the Soviet Union. Hitler was against this, as which could compel Bose to a forced landing in Allied territory. Tojo (Japanese Prime Minister) too objected to this on the grounds that this would amount to a breach of trust with the Soviet Union In fact as the now published secret service reports of the British Government show, they expected Netaji to fly to Japan over the southern Russia/Afghanistan border and on June 1942 asked the Soviets to intercept the flight, if possible.

Germany ensured that the best of German submarines Type IXD-1 U-boat, U-180 under Captain Werner Musenberg’ would be available for Netaji’s two-month long submarine ride to Madagascar and Japan on its part ensured that it submarine I-29 commanded by its famous Captain Masao Teraoka, would meet Netaji’s submarine off the coast of Madagascar on April 24, 1943.

Netaji left German from the seaport of Kiel on February 8, 1943. His would-be sole companion on this perilous voyage, Abid Hasan, had travelled separately to Kiel without being aware of his destination. Only after commencement of the journey was he to be informed of the itinerary.

An interesting anecdote related to this historic journey may perhaps be mentioned here. Shortly before Bose’s departure, the Japanese Naval Command raised objections because of an internal Japanese regulation not permitting civilians to travel on a warship in wartime. When Adam von Trott (of the German Foreign Office) received this message by cable from the German Ambassador in Tokyo, he sent the following reply: "Subhas Chandra Bose is by no means a private person, but Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Liberation Army." Thus the bureaucratic interference was overcome.

On April 26, 1943 off the coast of Mozambique the two Axis submarines swapped the VIP passengers. There were some moments of anxiety as the weather worsened and finally Netaji and Abid had to be pulled in a life raft from the German submarine to its Japanese counterpart. He arrived in Tokyo from Germany via Sabang, an isolated offshore islet north of Sumatra, on May 16, 1943, one year after he had planned to do so.

Despite Japan and Germany losing the war at all vital points by February 1943, a hard-headed realist like Netaji calculated that India’s success did not depend entirely on the victory of the Axis Powers. As a matter of fact, he once told his trusted German friend Admiral Canaris that "this time a victorious Britain will lose India." MF

Valid points until the last paragraph.

We still have to see if this attack is truly a naxal attack on CON party or if there is some sort of collaboration between one of the CON faction (and even at Sonia level) with naxals. Can't put past any thing on this Maino clan. If you consider the change of route and Ajit Jogi flying in helicopter, his aides left out... It is all looking like a master plan. Lets see if NIA starts obfuscating truth. We will know. This Clan is very smart and dangerous. They work with Amar Singh or Mulyam or Maya or KCR or Jagan or Sharad or any power broker.

The agenda of this Nandini is not just fighting injustice. It is to encourage extremism and create terrorists.

ROM SHARMILA SCHOLARSHIP 2013

IROM SHARMILA SCHOLARSHIP 2013

The first Irom Sharmila Scholarship has been awarded to twenty two year old Iymon Majeed from Panjipora village of Sopore district, Kashmir. He is studying for an MA in Political Science at Jamia Millia Islamia. Iymon has been writing about Kashmiri experiences under AFSPA and militarism for various publications. In his application Iymon wrote:

I am from the state of Jammu and Kashmir which comes under the Armed forces (Special Powers Act) from July 1990. Nine months later, on 7 March, 1991 I was born in the trouble torn town of Sopore in a small village of Panjipora. Four years later, in 1995, I was stamped with an agonizing experience on my memory. Indian Army commandeered our house and threw us out. In the next two years, we changed four houses, with us finally migrating to the main town of Sopore in north Kashmir. When the insurgency in Kashmir started in early 1990’s, Indian state flowed in thousands of its army men into the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the coming years. Providing lodging for the military in the residential areas was a daunting task before the Indian government. Army, then, took residence in the already vacated Kashmiri Pandith homes but also asked the local Muslim population to vacate the houses. My house was one of the hundreds of unlucky houses taken by the army and I became vagrant in my own land.

The committee received over 50 applications of which 40 were found eligible. The others were BA students or students studying outside Delhi. The applicants came from all the states of the Northeast and Kashmir and from all the different educational institutions in Delhi. The jury shortlisted four people for interview. This was a difficult choice, as many of the students were meritorious and had suffered tremendously under armed conflict. Of those shortlisted, one had his father killed by militants, and another by the security forces. Several had been displaced, and some had been shot at or picked up themselves. Despite this, they were all pursuing higher education seriously.

The award is based on a combination of financial need, academic seriousness, suffering under AFSPA or similar laws and both present and potential contribution to the democratic struggle against AFSPA and militarism in the spirit of Irom Sharmila. It is a one-time cash award of Rs. 50,000, and is restricted to post graduate students enrolled in any university or institute in Delhi.

The jury consisted of A. Bimol Akoijam, CSSS, JNU; Kamei Aphun, Department of Sociology, Delhi University; Ujjwal Kumar Singh, Department of Political Science, Delhi University; Nandini Sundar, Department of Sociology, Delhi University, and Sameer Yasir, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Kashmir.

But there is one thing I can tell you. We need a compassionate, accountable Police forces which owe allegiance to the constitution and law rather than serving politicians & lining their pockets in dealing with poor tribal victims who are crushed in between the state and barbaric Naxal leaders.

Naxals are the largest extortion network investing money in every business. The naxals were greatly encouraged by the UPA in the last 10 years.

Chhattisgarh attack: What makes Rahul Gandhi angry
The Congress vice-president was present at the meeting held at Raj Bhavan to take stock of the Maoist attack in Darbha Ghati that killed 14 Congressmen, seven security personnel and three civilians. It was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Shortly after the meeting started the young Congress leader shot off “who will take the responsibility?” It surprised the participants, particularly those from the Chattisgarh state government, which included Chief Minister Raman Singh, Chief Secretary Sunil Kumar and top police officials.

As the chief secretary proceeded with his presentation on the terrain, security situation and narration of the incident, Rahul interrupted again asking the same question. No one in the meeting was quite sure as to who he was pointing fingers at and who should respond to his agitated query that suggested that the state government was responsible.

Raman Singh remained patient. After a pause and uneasy silence, the chief secretary continued. Rahul interrupted again with the same query, sources told Firstpost, adding that the chief secretary then took a moralist position, which silenced Rahul Gandhi. He said as head of the bureaucratic set up he was willing to take the blame for whatever lapses that may have occurred and if resignation could settle the issue, he was ready to resign.
I think the Cabinet secretary should have told PAPPU, "Mr. PAPPU... You should check that first with your Dogvijay & idiotic HMs Shinde & Chidu".

So the target of CONgis & Naxals seems to be Raman Singh. First create enough troubles for him so that he does not get another term.
The central Congress leaders, who had maintained restraint on day one, are now making shrill noises against the state government and the Union Home ministry officials are telling the media that the state government was duly warned that Maoist were moving to Darbha Ghati area and there could be a possible attack. It was to suggest that an inept state government did not act on the intelligence input.

Many recall how then Home Minister P Chidambaram’s tough stance against Maoists was snubbed in a written article by Congress powerful general secretary Digvijaya Singh. Later at various forums, Singh maintained that naxalites were misguided youths not terrorists. “The issue is simple, I have always followed the Congress line throughout. The Congress has always felt it is a socio-economic problem and it has to be dealt with in that order,” he is quoted to have said. Chidambarm and the Home ministry were forced to abandon the tough posturing against the rebels and treat the problem more as a social issue than a law and order matter.

The present Home minister is taking no such risks of intra-party criticism. He has extended his official tour in USA and is now holidaying somewhere in New York.

Views from the Left
Maoist Attack

The editorial in the latest issue of CPI(ML) weekly ML Update discusses the Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. The CPI(ML) alleges that the Chhattisgarh government and the Centre are using the attack as a pretext to propose "army deployment and even air force strikes and drone attacks", and argues that the governments cannot be allowed to dress up an "unconscionable war" on the adivasi people as a "war on Maoists".
"Instead, there must be an immediate scrapping of Operation Green Hunt, withdrawal of former SPOs from the Chhattisgarh police force and criminal action initiated against all those, including police personnel and Salwa Judum cadre, who stand accused of rape and killing," it says.

The CPI(ML) states that the Maoist attack cannot be condoned and asserts that the outfit's "militaristic actions, isolated from democratic movements and political assertion, are counterproductive in developing any mass resistance to the government's policies..." At the same time, it asks whether the actions of Salwa Judum represent democracy. "The Salwa Judum SPOs stand accused of burning entire villages, raping women and killing countless people. Yet Mahendra Karma and his extra-constitutional terrorist outfit got the backing not only of the BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh, but of the Union home ministry and the Congress party. Was this democracy?"

BJP's FOREIGN POLICY

In AN article in People's Democracy, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat hit out at the BJP for its stand on foreign policy issues. The BJP, he says, has been taking a series of "regressive and jingoistic positions" on foreign policy and on relations with neighbouring countries. "The thrust of the BJP's stand is to create a confrontation with Pakistan and China and to rouse national chauvinist feelings against these two countries. The approach of the BJP towards relations with Bangladesh is also governed by the same approach," he adds.

He argues that the BJP, as the main opposition party, can be expected to adopt critical positions about the perceived failings of the foreign policy of the UPA government. "But the motivation for such attacks and criticism are suspect. They stem from a narrow worldview in which confrontation and conflicts with neighbours is sought to be fanned," he says.

Karat claims that this was designed to serve the "RSS-BJP combine's aim to make the Indian state into an authoritarian national security state". Referring to China, he says the BJP knows that cooperation between the two Asian giants is in the interests of both countries, "but its narrow right-wing ideology and the need for rousing chauvinist feelings domestically clouds its vision".

UPA 2 TURNS 4

The editorial in CPI journal New Age focuses on the fourth anniversary of UPA 2, claiming its tenure will be remembered for its utter misgovernance and corruption. "During these four years, it has [had] to seek resignation of at least five ministers, mostly due to corruption charges. It changed ministers, particularly from the petroleum ministry, on the biddings of corporate sector and even under foreign pressure. Two of its allies left halfway and two outside supporters remained captive as the Congress blackmailed them by misusing the CBI."

"The CBI itself came under sharp criticism from the apex court... The government got thoroughly exposed in the 2G spectrum and Coalgate scams, which put together has caused the loss of Rs 3.62 lakh crore to the public exchequer. In both scams, the prime minister himself came under cloud," it says.

Another distinction of the UPA 2, it states, was loss of working hours of Parliament. "Almost all sessions of Parliament witnessed scenes of disruption and adjournments of proceedings. Of course, on some occasions the main opposition is responsible for the obstruction and adjournment, but the blame has to be equally shared by the ruling coalition."

Any news of our "Home-Away" minister? His galavanting on personal affairs compares disgracefully with that of the British PM,David Cameron, who returned from his hol immediately in the aftermath of the savage attack on a British soldier by Islamist fundoos. Our beloved "lion" PM,has hardly "mewed" too in frightening the Maoists who now rule the roost in Chattisgarh.Yes,our beloved PM might be in foreign climes, standing tall on Asian defence with his counterparts from the land of Nippon, cocking a snoop at the mandarins in Beijing. He is now travelling afar to meet the "white" witch of Oz,in firming up further defence ties with that vast continent, but what about the state of security in his homeland India, where his own Congress colleagues and scores of innocents are being hacked to death ad nauseum by the Naxal menace? has he even castigated his Home-Away minister ,or ordered his return at least for the sake of propriety,or is there nothing left for this shameless govt. of the UPA to disgrace? It is a regime without, honour, without shame, without morals, without courage, without any loyalty and patriotism whatsoever to the nation.Even our foreign rulers cared more for India than this despicable regime. The sooner it is despatched to the dustbin of history the better.rankly, even the worst case scenario of a "third affront",as Rajivji put it,would be infinitely better. The looting and scooting will be more difficult unlike the "open stable door" philosophy of the "loin king"

That's right. How the Brits fought with the Japs and INA in Kohima to protect India from invasion, and how Nehru collapsed before the Chinese just 15 years later, and ended up giving a landmass to them equal in size to a European country. This is the danger of not electing nationalists to power. Indians have a habit of getting impressed with drawing room debaters and speech makers and appoint them as the leader. However, they don't realise that the most important quality needed in a leader is the ability to conduct war, and not to recite couplets or write poetry or give speeches in sophisticated English.

Poke Me: Why politicians & intellectuals are wrong about maoists
The government has only itself to blame as it looked the other way when the court stepped into its terrain and disbanded a popular resistance movement founded by Karma against Naxalities. In its order, the court came close to justifying the revolt against the State. "People do not take up arms, in an organised fashion, against the might of the State, or against human beings without rhyme or reason. Guided by an instinct for survival, and according to Thomas Hobbes, a fear of lawlessness that is echoed in our conscience, we seek an order. However, when that order comes with the price of dehumanization, of manifest injustices of all forms perpetrated against the weak, the poor and the deprived, people revolt," the court had noted.

IMO Raman Singh does not inspire confidence.

Here is KPS Gill talking about his lackadaisical approach against Maoism - http://www.timesnow.tv/Debate-Who-glamo ... 428487.cms

Also, the first thing he did after the attack was to call in Maino's NIA.

^^^ Communist judges are a threat to Indian society. They are tying the hands of the state again and again in taking on the Maoists with firmness. I feel many of these judges are closet Maoists themselves.

Speculation on TV that the Maoists had insider info, knew exactly which leaders were in the convoy, asking them by name, knew what kind of weapons the security were armed with (seemed to know that they had no automatics) and the route was changed and the Maoists lay in wait at the changed route , per the people interviewed on TV from the hospital bed.

Surprise at how the Cong MLA from that area Kawasi Lakhma was spared and how others were killed. Ajit Jogi strongly defending Lakhma from speculations.

Something very black in lentils onlee here . Seems like everyone has strong suspicions of an insider hit job. The NIA should investigate that fully.

So far NIA has not solved on bomb case since it was formed.

Vina,

the South waffled for quite a while on these folks too. The difference was that the mainstream CPI type parties were committed to 'revolution' by ballot box, at which point presumably the ballot will be abolished! Walter Devaram's smart move was to realize that the leadership for these folks lived in the cities and sent their kids to good schools there! Once he realized that he sent his forces into the towns and in short order had arrested or killed the entire leadership.

Even now the leadership of these folks in CI is based out of Vijaywada , Raipur and Bilaspur. Raman Singh would be well advised to look in his back yard for the agents who run these nut bags. From my visit the security situation in Chattisgarh has deteriorated quite dramatically. There were atleast 10+ checkpoints I ran into on main highways where money is extorted from folks with the police and government not in sight. I have no idea who the people were that were confiscating this money but definitely not government. In all the time never saw a single police patrol jeep. There were a few outside the new airport and in Raipur streets but they need to be out in the countryside. For folks in TN you can imagine how strange this was to me.

The area needs more effective policing and more prominent state functioning. With out these things the people are unable to fully come out in support of the state.

^^ are you advocating hundreds of boots harassing poor tribals, common folk, and misguided youth?

Our SC, Doggy dogs of MAINO clan, Fiberal civil rights activists strongly disapprove of this message. If you withdraw police and leave the tribals all alone, the problem will go away. Don't you know that? MMS knows that. Dogivjay knows that. Shinde knows that. Chidu has been advised of that. Our honorable supreme court judges know that. Sonia knows that. Even PAPPU knows that.

May be you did not get the memo. 26/11 was done by RSS. Naxal issue is because of RSS. Our CBI, RAW, IB, NIa are all aware of it

Kerala also IMHO had the same advantage. CPI has never shown any hesitation in chasing the Naxalites down and killing them like stray dogs. Infact when the infamous "Rajan Case" happened it was CPI who was in power (CM was C. Achutha Menon, and HM was K.Karunakaran). With a strong political backing the police was able to infiltrate these out fits and scuttle all the Naxalite plans for good. I agree with you that in many states where Naxalism is rampant the state governments have not been upto the mark. I know that parts of Maharashtra (Gadchiroli?) has Naxalite problems, but looks like there too if they act too smart the Maharashtra Police would make them toast.

The other day I was just checking the net for news on another murder case of the 1970s. Naxalites murdering a land lord in Kongad, Palakkad Dt. Kerala. The naxal gangs used to brag about this for years to come. Infact many folks used to take credit for the murder. And today all these naxalite jokers have gone no where in life and remain a disillusioned lot.
* A Severed head then, A Severed hand now
* Autumn of a Naxalite

After a long time Hari asked me what I thought. About a wasted youth, about commitment to ideology, or a life on the edges of survival ? I had no answers. I found Bhaskaran very reluctant to talk about the actual murder
....
Hari told me that the murdered Naranyanan Kutty Nair’s son also lived very close to Dhoni. He is a Gulf returned entrepreneur and has started an Long Distance calling and Photocopying shop in the front of huge house. For ironies in life, this takes the cake....

Anyone read "Hello Bastar" yet? I have read a few popular accounts/factual reports (like "Red Sun") but this one is said to be like a set of rather illuminating anecdotes and vignettes. Some reviews say it is actually sympathetic to certain facets of Maoists insurgency. The author, Rahul Pandita, was IIRC the first one who said that this operation was planned by "Sudarshan" in a rediff interview..... and there were quite a number of nuggets n that interview. And he didn't sound very sympathetic to the Maoists in that either.....

Ajit Jogi has gone through a very long & painful series of rehabilitation programs in South India & west. Various hospitals where he was referred to were in South India and then later some breakthrough medical intervention abroad has helped him more recently. That such a man undergoing recuperation can plan such a dastardly attack on his colleagues is not imaginable. That a Congress MLA escaped the assault of the terrorists is intriguing and needs to be probed thoroughly, by atleast Raman Singh govt, since there is no expection or any delivery track record from NIA. But if Jogi's colleagues or inner circle has some knowledge of these events, then that too must be probed thoroughly. Backing off for now, since Gulzari Lal ji is coming on strong.

What is this supposed to mean? Is there any threshold of physical disability after which a man stops planning dastardly attacks?
