Posted a piece in the IN td. Let's raise a toast on Monday,a large tot of our finest desi rum to the achievement. She is the first of hopefully many carrier "babies" to come and is a signal achievement that we are now a major world shipbuilder who can build everything from carriers to nuclear subs (with a little help from our friends ,no doubt!).The next step should be the swift order of the 4-5 amphib vessels .this time the order to be given to pvt. yards as our major DPSU yards are chock-a-block full of orders. There are three interesting designs to choose from, the Mistral,Juan Carlos and smaller new Japanese carrier Ozumi.

Thanks for the invitation but some of us would prefer to evaluate him and others on a case-by-case basis. It's only last week that he came out looking not only clueless, but also gullible.

It is a beast. Look at the size of the workers on the ground. It proves that we can do it while working under the corrupt system and all it needs is a few good men ( the IN which has put down its feet on local build out )! My TAX money well spent. We have arrived in the high table of world power and in my life time I will see battle groups moving around in the world seas comprising of huge surface and under water boats built in India taking commands from deep inside India via GPS sats. Hard to believe that a corrupt system like ours can deliver at this level. Something inside is working!

India to launch 1st indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant
KOCHI: India will launch its first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant on Monday, making an entry into a select club of countries capable of designing and building a carrier of this size and capability.

Defence minister A K Antony's wife Elizabeth will launch the 37,500 tonne carrier at Kochi shipyard close to four-and-a-half years after its keel was laid by the minister.
Apart from domestic design and manufacturing work, it is the high grade warship steel made by the Steel Authority of India which has been used for building the ship.

The indigenous component in the warship would be approximately anywhere between 80 and 90 per cent in floating department, up to 60 per cent in movement and not more than 30 per cent in fighting component of the carrier.

The ship, with a length of 260 m and breadth of 60 m, has been designed by Directorate of Naval Design and is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited.

Its production work had commenced in November 2006.

Nice. The only real gems that India have are its people who struggle to make it a better place mid all the attempts by politicians to screw up the country.

Just a hull with no pipes, wires, propulsion , flight deck or island. Miles away from ioc. Sigh.

The wiring and the pipes inside the hull must be complete. IAC was built in a modular way, remember. How do you know that the propulsion is not in?

But yes, still some work to do, even the extended flight deck to the port side for the landing runway has not been attached. Albeit, it can't be attached till the island is attached.

Very nice pics! There's plenty left to do, but I have to say I expected to see much less than what's visible now, considering the last public domain pics a year ago that showed nothing more than a hull section. At the current rate, it looks like a year and a half away from looking close to its final contours, i.e. offset superstructure and angled deck in place, with the fitment work substantially in progress by then.

chanaaka, it is unlikely that satellite image is from march as I think IAC moved back into dry dock around dec-12.

Bade, that's a great picture. I was wondering how can they "launch" such a massive ship when last time they floated it out to make way for INS Viraat.

Isn't the second IAC in Chaanakya's post that of Virat in the dry dock. Vikrant is in the channel just outside the 2nd empty dry dock. That is from a year or so ago.

JTull, check the water mark on the image (well hidden). Credits go to them. I wish was in Kochi at this time to take some snaps from the rooftops nearby. ;-)

The one in the dock seems to be the INS Virat and the one outside is the Vikrant.

added later: Noticed later Bade already posted it.

Will they add the bulbous bow to IAC1 or is it not needed?

that bulbous bowed carrier is powered nukes plus, per wiki:
Bulbous bows have been found to be most effective when used on vessels that meet the following conditions:

the waterline length is longer than about 15 metres (49 ft)
the vessel will operate most of the time at or near its maximum speed [2]
so, ins vikrant qualifies for it.. unless the operational speed is not always its max speed, per these data.

singha was not wrong in addressing the bulbous as sonar bows.. some warships do carry them like that per chacha.

interesting that it actually helps in higher speeds and reduce drag.

I have a suggestion. Now that the BOmbay govt. and IN cannot maintain the original Vikrant as a museum, why don't they offer it to the Kerala govt.? They have a lot of tourism and the ship would be an excellent conference venue too apart from being the country's best naval museum. The "Gulfers" ,Kerala NRI investors, who have out up enormous malls like the Lulu one in Cochin surely can find the funds to rescue and restore our historic carrier.

Sonar domes[edit source | editbeta]

Some warships specialized for anti-submarine warfare use a specifically shaped bulb as a hydrodynamic housing for a sonar transducer, which resembles a bulbous bow but the hydrodynamic effects are only incidental. The transducer is a large cylinder or sphere composed of a phased array of acoustic transducers.[8] The entire compartment is flooded with water and the acoustic window of the bulb is made of fiber-reinforced plastic or another material (such as rubber) transparent to underwater sounds as they are transmitted and received. The transducer bulb places the sonar equipment at the greatest possible distance from the ship's own noise-generating propulsion system.

it need not be a ASW sonar, but surely a integral obstacle avoidance and mine avoidance kit is need to operate in shallow waters and in waters outside harbours potentially laid with enemy mines
one mistake could be a $100 mil bill and a year in drydock.
