Reg the 7th Pay Commission, it must be remembered that the NDA faced the same quandary when it came to power in the late 1990s - it was faced with the fiscal hole caused by the 5th Pay Commission, which essentially doubled the wage bill for the central government and increased the bill of the state govts by 75%. That commission also recommended slashing workforce by 30%, which of course, was not implemented. However, The NDA implemented a series of measures, including the FRBM Act, that stabilized finances by 2002, and by 2004, savings/GDP touched 30% for the first time in our independent history, and the externalities of actions from that era - particularly the rapid roadbuilding effort, yielded dividends for years afterwards.

I am having second thoughts about the speech. He started nicely, linking Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Then he quickly went to attacking Congress. But he should have tied the narration a little closer to the home - so to speak. Tying the IT folks to TN thought nice will not really hit any mark. People do not connect to Microsoft. I think it is a case of reaching to the right audience. He could have tied UPA corruption to DMK. Maybe he thought, some DMK members might vote for BJP at national level. I thought he meandered and got a little lost towards the middle and end. I am a little disappointed. Maybe too high of an expectation. This was billed as a high event.

Indeed, and it made many significant points. The bigger point is the increase of Stature with every rally that NM is making. Who wants to hear LKA, Rajnath or Sushma let alone Raga or Sonia..all sound insipid. LKA too realized during his speech that Namo's stature is way beyond him. TO hold that big a crowd requires the dynamics and following of a rock star! Namo does even that..gets them into a measured frenzy cheering for Bharat Mata doing Vande Mataram all the while. RG/ SG and the rest initiate LCD debates on whether we should be saying Vande mataram..difference.

If Modi becomes PM we will be quite a mauryaesque era for a while to fix all the damage done by the Secular-Left. Pakistan and China are already a headache for us and we need to play dirty with them for a while. For once in a long time, we will be devoting most of our energy into developing critical infra and begin surpassing the other great civilizations. Imagine the change in the education system, think tanks springing up, self sufficiency in agriculture and military arms, etc.

If Modi becomes PM, I think China will go into silent mode for next 5 years but will try to maneuver thru Pakis. There is a fair chance of Kargil II. NM's mettle will be tested before China makes the move.

Pakistanis will have to maneuver regardless RamaYji. Bloody sh*thole has nothing left to lose. The mullahs will grab power eventually. They are being kept at bay for now. However, when the Americans complete their withdrawal from Afghanistan they won't be in a position to really mount any pressure on the Islamist elements of the country. We need a chanakya and not a wimpy italian to deal with these people.

from chindu:
In the RSS’s imagination, a major electoral success for the BJP could eventually be touted as a big achievement in terms of stitching together the upper caste Hindus and the OBCs, who fought bitterly with each other during the anti-Mandal agitation after V.P. Singh had announced the implementation of the Mandal Commission report in 1989.

X-Post....

Pioneer today has this op-ed from Kalyani Shankar who is quite astute:
http://www.dailypioneer.com/columnists/ ... -wave.html
Chandrababu Naidu may ride Modi wave
Friday, 27 September 2013 | Kalyani Shankar | in Oped
12345 0 As the original tech-savvy poster-boy of development stares at a third consecutive loss, he may return to the NDA to remain relevant

Going by his recent moves, Telugu Desam Party supremo Chandrababu Naidu is desperate to gain relevance at the national and State levels. Remembering his golden period in the late nineties, Mr Naidu is determined to become at least a king- maker, if not the king, after the 2014 election. The man, who could be described as a prototype of Mr Narendra Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, is, understandably, feeling isolated.

In some ways, Mr Modi and Mr Naidu are two sides of the same coin — except that the former has the support of a national party. Yet, it was Mr Naidu who first showed the country how to run a laptop-and-teleconference administration. It was he who perfected the art of self-projection in media and spent crores for this purpose. He also got funds from abroad to transform Hyderabad into the metropolis that it is today. He went from being a backroom boy for the National Front to the convener of the United Front from 1996 to 1998. He was an important supporter of the NDA from 1999 to 2004.

There was a time when the Telugu Desam Party, headed by a man considered to be the most tech-savvy politician of his day, was no match for other parties, especially when it came to mounting a publicity and media relations blitz. Also, from the perspective of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Naidu offered good governance and used his cordial relationship with the Union Government to get developmental activities moving.

However, all this did not help him win elections either in 2004 or 2009. In 2009, in an act of desperation, he got into an alliance with the TRS and Left parties in Telangana. But the shrewd Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy used film star Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party to split opposition votes while inciting anti-bifurcation sentiment in the Seemandhra region to help the Congress come back to power in with an overwhelming majority. With the untimely death of Rajasekhara Reddy in 2009, Mr Naidu thought that his party could return to prominence.

But the rise of YSR’s son Jagan Mohan Reddy has dampened this hopes. Now that Mr Reddy is out on bail, Mr Naidu has more cause to worry — the Congress has apparently an understanding with Mr Reddy on a post-poll arrangement; and, in the Telangana region the Congress-TRS combine is all set for a victory. Where does that leave the TDP?

Mr Naidu is now staring at the possibility of a third consecutive defeat in the State. His flip-flops on the Telangana issue have not helped. Some TDP leaders are already planning to move to either the Congress or the TRS. In the Seemandhra region too, TDP leaders are sceptical about Mr Naidu because he hasn’t rescinded his 2009 ‘letter of support’ for bifurcation of the State. This strategy of running with the hare and hunting with the hound is only hurting Mr Naidu’s prospects.

Desperate to remain relevant, the Andhra leader has positioned himself at the forefront every time the idea of a non-BJP, non-Congress ‘Third Front’ has come up. But neither the Left parties nor the major regional parties seem to be seriously considering this alternative front. So, Mr Naidu is keeping open his option of returning to the NDA either before or after the 2014 poll even though he had blamed the BJP for his 2004 defeat. But does he want to ride the Modi wave?

Starved of members, the BJP-led NDA would like to have the TDP in its fold, especially as it seeks to reconstruct its 90s dream team. Mr Modi even hinted at this during his Hyderabad rally. He is also trying to engineer a patch up between the two Thackeray cousins while seeking to win over Mr BS Yeddyurappa in Karnataka and Mr Babulal Marandi in Jharkhand. Meanwhile, the BJP is wooing potential allies in Assam and other North-Eastern States. It believes that the North-East and the south are the the two areas where the party needs to strengthens its base the most. A section within the BJP also wants an alliance with Om Prakash Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal.

In such a scenario, Mr Naidu is unable to make up his mind about which issues will affect him more — Telangana or the Muslim votes. The Jagan Reddy-Congress combine will be bad news for him. No wonder he is facing a Hobson’s choice.

Many Uighurs escaped to Kazakhstan. There they became part of Turkish Gulenist Islamist networks. Through that mercantile-Islamist network they often moved to Turkey and the US (Gulen lives in and operates from HQ in Pennsylvania). These Uighur Islamists are being nurtured by the Turks and the US. Pak will certainly provide a base for them.

I think BJP needs to get off this "Sonia is an Italian" strategy because it will only backfire. She has lived in India since 1968, wears sarees, speaks okay Hindi, so this cannot be a weapon. This may strengthen her case that she loves India and has given up being an Italian.

That was my first thought when I saw the story about someone faking Sonia. Sonia contacted AG and talked to him. MMS or someone in PM circle recorded it. They will use them to blackmail her to keep him as PM.

But CONgis figured it and out that story. Even if that story about fake lady was true, what is the need to leak that info? Doesn't it establish that Sonia spoke to SG on some other occasion? Why take such as a risk?

Modi draws huge crowd in Tamil Nadu
G.C. SHEKHAR

Tiruchy, Sept 26: Narendra Modi has probably given the BJP a new direction in Tamil Nadu after a roaring show at Tiruchy that unfolded in front of nearly a two lakh-strong gathering on Thursday.

For Modi, it was his first meeting in the south after being anointed as PM in waiting by the party.

For the state BJP– tired of being an also ran with a mere three per cent of votes that translated into zero out 18 Lok Sabha seats it contested in 2009 — the Modi effect was a much needed morale booster as Tiruchy witnessed the biggest ever turnout for a stand-alone event of the BJP in the state.

In comparison Advani’s meeting at Madurai two years ago was an anaemic flop.

The difference clearly was the Modi magic — something that kept the crowd initially waiting for four hours under a scorching sun and later totally engrossed during his 90 minute speech. Emboldened by the turnout and the Modi factor, not one BJP leader ever mentioned Jayalalithaa — a prospective ally till a few months ago. Only Anurag Thakur, the Yuva Morcha President joked that a state being ruled by a powerful Amma was so power starved and was reeling under power cuts.

Tiruchy sent out the clear message that the BJP was not considering the AIADMK as an ally for the elections. In fact the party wants to ride the Modi momentum to cobble up its own front led by the BJP and consisting of smaller parties like Vijayakanth’s DMDK, Vaiko’s MDMK, Ramadoss’ PMK and a few others.

“After today’s meeting it is the AIADMK and DMK that will vie with each other to form an alliance with the BJP in Tamil Nadu. And even if we ignore these two parties we can still win 10 seats just riding the Modi wave,” observed D. Mohandas, an LIC agent from Ambur town in Tamil Nadu’s northern Vellore district.

Echoing a similar view was K. Dharumar, who owns a grocery shop in Tenkasi town of Tirunelveli district right down in the south: “Even villagers know about Modi and what he has done for Gujarat. Those who are not aware will know about him after today’s meeting at Tiruchy.” Hailing from geographically opposite ends of the state the two exuded a confidence about the Modi magic which they claim would win the party at least a few MPs from the state.

While state BJP leaders had calculated that a BJP-AIADMK alliance would be unbeatable given the latter’s solid vote bank and the momentum and expectation that Modi brings, the new thinking is to challenge both the AIADMK and the DMK by assembling all their former allies.

“AIADMK speakers used to proclaim that only the person being pointed at by their Amma would become the next Prime Minister. Later they declared that Jayalalithaa will be the next Prime Minister as the party will all the forty LS seats. But we announced our PM choice without waiting for Jayalalithaa’s concurrence, which has really upset her which is one reason why she did not congratulate Modi in spite of a sharing a good personal equation with him,” pointed out a BJP source.

Modi himself was stunned by the massive crowd and openly congratulated state BJP president Pon. Radhakrishnan.”I have not witnessed such a gathering in Tamil Nadu though I have addressed a few public meetings here. Those who know the politics of this state can really see the winds of change here. You have given me and the BJP new hope. In return I promise all the youngsters who have come today that the BJP will not let you down,” Modi said to thunderous cheers while winding up his now typical Congress bashing.
