Suraj if you read that article in its entirety, it is Nixon and Kissinger who come across as unhinged lunatics. Zhou En lai eventually made the smart choice of staying out despite the Americans pressing and prodding the Chinese to intervene and promising them protection from the Soviets.
Oh yes, I'm familiar with this narrative, and I know that the two of them, particularly Nixon, come across as unhinged. What I find interesting is that they imply Zhou En Lai has some deep rooted issue with India. That piqued my attention. I was curious what it was - some animosity arising out of the Dalai Lama episode, or something else.

Nixon is discredited (not for this but for watergate) but Kissinger is still alive and even visited India few years back. Anyone checked with him the reason for his visceral hatred for India?

He couldn't play us. The people he dealt with here were as sly and slimy and snakelike as he was. We understood him and his leader's psychology much better than he thought we had a right to. And we played him right back - and with much less resources than he had. We did not fit into the comfortable stereotypes in his head related to colour, cleverness and capability for cynical manipulation. Like Russell Peters said he naively thought "he was the only one". Fellow dealt with our people and found each and every one was as slippery and amoral as he was. He knew he couldn't get what he wanted pretty quickly. Naturally, like the slimy fu(k who underestimates his mark, thinking they don't know or understand the mechanics of the transaction and which points along the chain he makes his profit cuts, he overplayed both in terms of confidence and his reading of the adversary. His government paid the price.

Fellow is nothing more than an amoral conman with a lot of blood on his hands, so not really a very capable one. But there aren't many in "the West" like him - who are born with this and drink it with their mother's milk. In our case there aren't many who aren't like him. His only redeeming factor is that he understands the Western mind well, which is why he is now some sort of eminence grise.

Nixon and Kissinger’s most perilous covert gambit was the overture to Mao’s China— already on poisonous terms with India. Kissinger believed that Zhou Enlai was somewhat unhinged when it came to India, and the deployment of Chinese soldiers could easily have sparked border clashes.
This is interesting, if somewhat off topic. Would someone better informed on the topic be able to explain what Zhuo Enlai's beef with India was, so much so as to be characterized as unhinged ?

Terrorists attack security forces convoy in Srinagar

SRINAGAR : Terrorists opened fire on a convoy of security forces in the outskirts of the city on Saturday, leaving a civilian injured.

The terrorists opened fire on vehicles of the security forces between Sanat Nagar and Hyderpora bypass road on Saturday afternoon, official sources said.

They said a civilian was injured in the brief firing.

The whole area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the terrorists involved in the firing, the sources said.

Meanwhile, a lesser-known group Shohada Brigade claimed responsibility for the firing, saying two of its activists were involved.

"Our two men carried out the attack on Army at Sanat Nagar in Srinagar," a person introducing himself as Shamsul Haq, spokesman of the group, said on phone.

The group had also claimed responsibility for the twin terror strikes on a police station and an Army camp in Jammu on Thursday which left ten persons including a Lt Col of Army dead.

RudradevJi,

I agree facts cannot lie. But please hear me out, and between friends, sometime we have to disagree without being disagreeable (to borrow Jassu bhai's verbal convolutions whatever that phrase means :-)).

Let me first off say, in general, I would prefer a hard-nosed BJP deal with TSP rather than MMS (whose heart bleeds for Paki hearts even as they slaughter us. Not to mix up topics, but has MMS made even a single statement or lost any sleep over the scores of Indians, mostly Gujaratis, slaughtered in the Kenya attack? Or is is he basking in some "rare gesture" (according to DDM) that Obama showered on him so he (MMS) continues to keep TSP happy?).

But I have to say that when it comes to the big picture, both Vajpayee led NDA and MMS have been utterly clueless in dealing with TSP. And both have come under the magic spell of US. Recall, VajpayeeJi's crap about "India and US being natural allies" even US continued to treat TSP like a munna, berate his own govt for its "Hindu nationalism" etc.

Coming back to the numbers you quoted, they mask the pummeling India got from TSP during NDA time. Remember Kargil (despite our so called "victory", MushRat comes to India on a red carpet and talks about his Kargil exploits)? Remember Kandahar? Remember Kaluchak? Remember Nadimarg massacre? Remember Akshardam temple massacre? Remember the mother of all, the parliament attack? In real terms what price did India under NDA extract for those humiliations? And too much is made of MusRat's 2004 declaration that he won't allow TSP territory for attacks against India. And note he excludes J&K from that statement. My point is simple. Lets leave NDA (BJP) Vs Cong bean counting aside, but India as a whole has been clueless and helpless in dealing with TSP.

But I agree that India sunk to the lowest levels under MMS's regime, where "Hindu extremism" poses a greater threat according to him is seditious. Add to that his so called 4-point J&K formula with MushRat, one of them being "joint sovereignty", is surrender of J&K by another name.

Finally, on MMS's weak policies leading to all the attacks from TSP we are seeing. Here is my take on it. I am not sure it has much to do with MMS's appeasement per se. I mean think about it. Even under the face of those attacks, MMS continues to make love with the Paki terrorists. And he can continue to justify that love making because millions of us Indians voted him back to power despite 26/11. So imagine if TSP actually held back, perhaps they would have got more from MMS. But they did not? Why? Because even the best deal they can realistically get from India however much MMS wants to gift Kashmir away is not good enough for TSP. TSP wants India, not just J&K. So TSP calibrates its use of terror to keep Kashmir and the region in general on the cauldron. In other words, they have not scaled back one bit, their war of 1000 cuts which they believe is working to their advantage. And this is not going to end, until India extracts a hefty price from TSP. Or our best bet at the moment, the Paki Taliban does so on our behalf :-).

Dehaati - nothing wrong with dehati but anyway who would call MMS dehati .. its more like paki leaders crying away to cover terror record at UN. It would be very bad for pakis if fourfathers tell them anything against terrorism and especially now at time of UN session.

Nawaazo has no Wazzo to hold peace talks: Pakistani Taliban

Pakistan In Badmash" Mouth
KARACHI: The Pakistani Taliban militants Saturday assailed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for changing his mind and giving preconditions of weapon lay down for the APC-backed peace talks with them. The comments appeared to have been sparked by an interview Sharif made with the Wall Street Journal during a trip to New York, in which he said militants must lay down their arms and follow the constitution. Previously the prime minister had not given preconditions for the talks. The prime minister had also indicated during his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry that while seeking a dialogue with the Taliban, the government is also considering a more vigorous police and military action against them should the talks fail.he spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, did not explicitly reject the offer but his words gave little room for negotiations.“By telling us that we will have to lay down arms and respect the constitution, the prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, showed that he is following the policy of America and its allies,” the spokesman said. Declining to accept the writ and authority of the PML-N government, Shahid said: “He (Nawaz Sharif) is talking about laying down arms and accepting the Constitution. If we were willing to do that, there would be no need to have any kind of dialogue.”“We will hold talks with (the government) only when it gets the authority to take decisions.” Replying to a query about proof of Sharif’s ‘authority,’ he said there were three steps required for confidence-building; pull out the Army from FATA, release of Taliban prisoners, and end to US drone attacks in Pakistan.“We will present our terms and conditions when we sit down for dialogue. What we have already mentioned are not conditions or preconditions, they are steps the government must take to build confidence and prove they have authority,” he added.Answering a question regarding repercussions of a full-scale military operation against the militants, he said, “The operation against us has been going on for the last 10 years already. We have become used to it. We even welcome it.”

We'll never, ever compromise on J&K border: Manmohan at UN
NEW YORK: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has a message for Pakistan as far as the Jammu and Kashmir is concerned: Forget it.

In some of the bluntest, uncompromising message ever put across by an Indian Prime Minister at the UN, Singh laid down the line in the sand — the lakshman rekha so to say — saying "There must be a clear understanding of the fact that J&K is an integral part of India and there can never, ever, be a compromise with the unity and territorial integrity of India."

India's Singh Calls Pakistan Sponsor of Terrorism
"State-sponsored cross-border terrorism is of particular concern to India, also on account of the fact that the epicenter of terrorism in our region is located in our neighborhood in Pakistan," said Mr. Singh, in his speech.....

"There can be no tolerance for states sheltering, arming, training or financing terrorists. Nor can they absolve themselves of the responsibility to prevent their territories from being used to launch acts of terrorism," said Mr. Singh.

Nervous market sends Paki Halal rupee into freefall
Currency Vs NLI
ISLAMABAD: While the rupee is in free fall, economists and government officials in the capital are debating the causes instead of taking steps to prevent further depreciation of the rupee.Obviously, the market is in panic and looking for some assurance from Islamabad. But unfortunately, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is in New York with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for reasons better known to him.
Then it is also a fact that the slide in rupee is good for some to make windfall profits. That the same has serious implications for the economy, the government does not seem to be shaking up to come out of its slumber and address the structural problems believed to be the main cause of the free fall in rupee.
A top banker from Karachi who wished not to be quoted identified two decisions announced in the budget as prime reasons for ‘nervousness’ in the market. The banker said it was an unwise decision of the government to empower tax officials to access accounts of the depositors, which he believed would lead to harassment of account holders. At the same time, the filing of return forms for declaring cash in bank accounts for the purpose of 0.5 per cent income support levy added to the problem as well. Last date for filing of the return forms is October 31.
As a result, the nervous people are withdrawing cash from banks which is leading to dollarisation in the country. It also caused capital flight from the country triggering further pressure on the currency. Beside this, the government is also reluctant to regulate import of gold, which is mostly smuggled to India. Last month, gold worth $500 million was imported, but Islamabad is unwilling to levy duty on it to save precious foreign exchange.Tax officials did not agree with the apprehensions of the bankers that tax proposals cause bank run.

From what I can tell, this might not be true and might be a plant in Paki media by some sections afraid that Nawaz was going to make some "concessions". Ofcourse I have no illusions of Nawaz and his love for India, but this specific instance seems to be a plant.

Dawood, ISI to launch TV channel in Pakistan?
A new TV channel in the works in Pakistan is creating a lot of media buzz. No, it’s not because of the fat salaries — houses and luxury cars included — it is offering or even the talent it is attracting. It’s because BOL channel network has a unique backer — Dawood Ibrahim — and the ISI’s blessings.

People closely involved with setting up BOL — set to go on air by the year-end — privately confirm the two main parties are the gangster-turned-terrorist and the spy agency. They say the ISI has adopted this strategy to counter an increasingly independent broadcast media.

<snip>

It has office blocks in Karachi’s Defence area, a sign of official sanction at a very high level. Insiders say Axact handled a lot of the ISI’s cyber activities.

But all that’s a front. Pakistani industry sources say the main funding comes from Ibrahim, said to be based in Dubai but with an expanding business in Pakistan.

Indian sources say launching a channel is unusual for the ISI which has, in the past, bought journalists, paid existing channels or tried to influence specific programmes.

Pisshour has seen so much death and mayhem since 2005 or so that people in lawhore and pindi slumbad dont even bat an eyelid at these regular two figure death tolls anymore.
In fact they suarly never batted an eyelid even when those attacks started all those years back. They after all live in cities where their streets are manicured daily for that fine prim look. Beautiful cities for "beautiful" and "classy" people - in comparison cities like pisshour are deadzones populated by brutes and beasts.

Which brings to the question - has Pisshour begun to get depopulated with out-migration to surrounding regions?
May be surrounding semi urban centers are booming while the city itself dies a fast death.

Or is it just another human meat grinder like Karachi where unaware people keep coming in by the truckloads , keep getting killed on the streets by cartloads and keep getting buried in those collective graves which stay forever freshly dug because they keep getting dug up again and again to dump the latest batch of dead bodies.
Yet the beeline of outsiders to the city of Karachi doesn't seem to stop.

Bakara does not want "3 terrorists" to derail the bonhomie between MMS and Sheriff. She is so sure they were just terrorists from mars with no TSP state support to derail the bhaichara between MMS and Pakis. Also, I wonder why Indian army allows this woman to the front lines and commanders discuss operational plans etc. She will pass that on to her TSP and US mentors

I don't think that the condescending and outrageous references to India in their private talk was ever asked of Kissinger during his visit. I remember his explanation (I am not sure if it was a response to a question) that the carrier group was sent to Bay of Bengal for evacuation purposes and not to threaten India. :)

^^ Pak Tribune has a pre launch session for this book
Lot of funny paki speak on Sooth Asia happening below.
South Asia in 2060: ‘It’s time to jump on the region’s bandwagon
ISLAMABAD:
Forecasting South Asia 50 years from now, a compilation of essays by 47 experts in a book titled “South Asia 2060: Envisioning Regional Futures” was discussed by editors of the book at The Jinnah Institute on Wednesday evening.
“South Asia 2060: Envisioning Regional Futures” contains a series of essays discussing the likely long-range trajectories of South Asia’s future as a region and their impact on the region. The editors of the book, Dr Adil Najam, a former vice chancellor of Lahore University of Management Sciences, and Dr Moeed Yusuf, a security expert, presided over the session. Former ambassador Dr Maliha Lodhi, a contributor for the book, also briefed participants on her findings.
The book — soon to hit bookstores — is not an academic volume or language of law and political science, explained Najam. “It exposes major emerging trends and issues in an encyclopedically wonderful manner” he said.

The editors explained that the vision for South Asia is strong, but the structure for making it possible is weak. The book brings together diverse views from leading South Asian experts on economy, environment, history, security and gender among others.
“There is a growing sense in South Asia that people can do more on their own without their governments. The book reflects that sense of urgency,” stated Yusuf, adding that the book’s contributors were initially reluctant to write about a region for which it was difficult to imagine a collective future.
Panellists discussed how the book presented a coherent and nuanced outlook of the region, offering both an introspective and globally aware perspective of the outcomes of the region’s development. Najam said that inbuilt traits of the region’s people, such as competitiveness over cooperation, were described in the book. Another trend relating to the constant tussle between development and security was also discussed by experts.

Lodhi said it was essential for Pakistan to deal with its inner demons in order to attain her greater goals.
“There has to be peace within
. The sentiments are there but the vision remains a dream if not accompanied by a strategy,” she said, adding that Pakistan lacks thinking and planning power that restricts it from attaining long-term goals.
“We need to transcend the past and make use of South Asia’s rise. Let us get over our obsession with the west,” she said.
She further said that shared objectives can only be achieved through cooperation and not via confrontation. We need to tell our people that the world has changed. “We need to stop worrying about what the world is doing for us, rather see what we can do for the world.”
Dr Anita Weiss, a sociologist and another contributing author of the book, said she had to use different techniques to envision what could happen.
Professor Riffat Hussain, a defence analyst and academic, in his concluding remarks, said South Asia is no longer subordinate but an important global player.
One country that speaks of South Asia is India and when India speaks of rising, it always speaks of itself and never of the region” he said, adding that for India, South Asia ends and begins with her. He noted that the book does not contain a chapter on human rights which is one of the region’s greatest challenges. On Afghanistan, he said the conflict remains frozen, not resolved

MMS,Pak "epicentre of terrorism".Nice to see him quoting BR,whose members have been saying this for over a decade!
Anyway, his sudden stirring of the loins is entirely due to the "R-bomb",detonated under his throne, whose sparks and splinters have...well,you all know the limerick about the man from Madras....No?

(There was a man from Madras,

Whose balls were made of brass,

In stormy weather they clashed together ,

And sparks flew up his a**e!)

The stormy weather in Delhi has galvanised our beloved PM at the UN,especially as the clarion calls for him to break off the planned talks with the Sherrif, after the latest terror outrage in J&K,produced total outrage in the nation, saw him defy the mood of the nation. The R-bomb wounds swiftly saw him do a U-turn,unable to call off the talks decided to badmouth Pak to save face.Mr.Modi has just said on telly that our beloved PM "capitulated" to O'Bomber aka O'Bugger and that the UPA regime has "derailed India".

Just see what Montek's brother has just written about our beloved mendicant.

Montek’s brother slams PM for ‘timidity’, says quit now

NEW DELHI: A blog asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to quit is no surprise. After all, the cyberspace is hardly a friendly arena for the PM or the Congress, dominated as it is by right wing opinion.

But this blog, burning up Delhi's bureaucratic grapevine, is different. Its author was till recently a serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and is, more significantly, brother of Planning Commission deputy chairperson Montek Ahluwalia - a key long-term aide of the PM; in fact, Singh's original choice for finance minister in 2009.

In a post this week, Sanjeev Ahluwalia, describing himself as an independent consultant, slams the PM for "betraying himself time and again, as he (PM) turned a Nelson's eye to massive corruption, allowed decision-making to be subverted by unconscionably partisan politics and sloth".

The younger Ahluwalia's blog (http://bit.ly/163twJi) piece, titled "The Man who betrayed himself," and offers forthright advice to the PM that he should quit office for having clearly overstayed his welcome.

"Here is some gratuitous advice to Dr Singh. It is not too late to resign...when you became PM you became "our" PM, not the Congress party's representative," Ahluwalia writes.

"You are, hopefully, not just any other policrat. Please preserve our faith in the belief that professionals and intellectuals are actually "high minded" enough to work against their own self-interest," says the blog being devoured in ministries across Delhi.

"There are thousands of babus who do this for 35 long years of their working lives and are none the worse for it. Please shed your intellectual robes and become the babu you have been," the blog advices the PM.

Ahluwalia was a 1980-batch IAS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre who retired about a year ago. He has worked with the World Bank in Sudan till recently.

Sanjeev Ahluwalia's blog says the time could be ripe for Rahul Gandhi to step out of the shadows, but more strikingly refers to the PM as returning to his "babu" roots by defining a "narrowly construed "personal" integrity aimed at keeping "his desk clean".

But this manoeuvre, he says, might be dated. "Even this is questioned in the 2G scam and Coalgate, though most would put down the seeming links to him, to a secretariat, outside of his control...He betrayed his earlier characterization of himself as a Sher (Singh) and appeared to meekly toe the backward looking, ineffective and contradictory party line."

"Who holds the nuclear "button" today is really the question? and does the world believe that Dr. Singh would be allowed to press it should the situation warrant?", the blog says.

The PM had debased the high office he holds. Ahluwalia says that in 2004, "when Dr Manmohan Singh was selected by Mrs Gandhi to became PM, there was relief that after a hiatus of two decades, India would again be led by an "intellectual" far above the hurly burly of election politics, with no personal stake and no motive, except to "wipe the tears from the eyes of the poorest Indian" (the Mahatma)."

The blog notes that the PM showed his mettle in "initiating change in our energy policy" and "abandoning the deadweight of polarizing ideology" to "seemingly put India on the track of fast growth with social inclusion. In 1984 (2004) he was an accidental choice as PM, out of the several other "old" faces around, who were considered politically innocuous enough, to keep the seat warm for Rahul."

The PM's image, says Ahluwalia, took a beating soon after 2009 when "we voted for Dr Singh, based on his record of the past five years but also based on our belief, that more and better was to come."

But instead, "Like the collapse of the mountains above Kedarnath, the lofty edifice built up by reputation and public expectations cracked and collapsed under the weight of timidity, poor political instincts but most importantly self-betrayal."

"Could he have acted differently? Was he constrained by the limitations imposed on "outsiders" joining the "policracy" laterally...When the going gets tough, the tough get going....one way or another," says the blog.

Asking the PM to reclaim his upright image, Ahluwalia writes, "This is a time honored tradition amongst babus. We sup with anyone who parties in the evening, but come the morning, we do the "right" thing, no matter what the consequences.
Despite the R-bomb,and the changed scenario, loyal lackey to the epitome of lackeyism,Salman-the-Cursed,still genuflects and pays obeisance to the Paki terrorist leadership in his latest statements.

Manmohan-Sharif talks might be a way to help reduce the negatives: Salman Khurshid

Poor fellow, there go all the dreams of the Nobel Peace Prize.
