ShyamD has gone into hiding. I'm still hoping that one of his "sources" has something...

Meanwhile, US and UK have suspended non-lethal aid to rebels.

The inner jihadi of many of the fighters is now revealing itself. It's only a matter of time when the "secular" fighters are snuffed out.

We've seen this happen over and over again all over the world. Islamic purity always prevails over these secular mujahids.

Saudis and other arab states are doing the heavy lifting now it seems.

My, my how the the tables have turned. Now its the Americans being forced to come to the table and give the Iranians some breathing room.

Hersh: Obama Told Half-Truth on Syria
President Barack Obama told a half-truth in September when he went before the nation to make the case for why the United States needed to respond militarily to the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh alleges.

"In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts," Hersh wrote in the London Review of Books. "Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the U.S. intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country's civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a U.N. study concluded — without assessing responsibility — had been used in the rocket attack."

The Obama administration has responded to Hersh's allegations, saying that they are "simply false," said Shawn Turner, spokesman for the director of National Intelligence, USA Today reports.

Saudi barbaria is hell bent on making it a bloodier affair.

Why Is Saudi Arabia Buying 15,000 U.S. Anti-Tank Missiles for a War It Will Never Fight?
No one is expecting a tank invasion of Saudi Arabia anytime soon, but the kingdom just put in a huge order for U.S.-made anti-tank missiles that has Saudi-watchers scratching their heads and wondering whether the deal is related to Riyadh's support for the Syrian rebels.

The proposed weapons deal, which the Pentagon notified Congress of in early December, would provide Riyadh with more than 15,000 Raytheon anti-tank missiles at a cost of over $1 billion. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies' Military Balance report, Saudi Arabia's total stockpile this year amounted to slightly more than 4,000 anti-tank missiles. In the past decade, the Pentagon has notified Congress of only one other sale of anti-tank missiles to Saudi Arabia -- a 2009 deal that shipped roughly 5,000 missiles to the kingdom.

Iran passes ‘pedophilia’ law to let men marry adopted girls

A very old thorny problem - but perfectly consistent with all versions of the sharia. Adoption is vehemently denied as granting equivalence to biologically obtained sons and daughters - right from the days of the founder.

The root cause of all this dispute was Muhammad's desire for his then DIL, Zainab, wife of his "adopted" son. A whole bunch of ahadith was born, and the firishta had to intervene, with the supreme authority also joining in - giving visions of a marriage already celebrated in "heaven" between the founder and Zainab while he was sitting with Aisha.

The problem was that as per pre-illumination Arab custom, Zainab would be seen as a daughter, and hence "haram" for the founder. So the messages came that "we" "gave" Zainab to "you" specifically to break the pagan custom of adoption".

It is all about increasing the pool of available items of pleasurable flesh. And people fail to see as to why the theology has such strong following.

B ji,
Aisha was his best friend's daughter (Abu Bakr), yet another pagan customer broken by profit. Would have been a great mentor for Tejpal

According to some accounts, Abu Bakr played a very prominent role for the continuation of Islam. He was the one who announced the death of mohammad. When muslims were confused about the future of islam he made a passionate speech about how all prophets are there to just deliver the message of allah & bound to die (something similar to that).

Reading about the Ibn Saud family where so many intermarriages too things I have noted

1) The time is near, possibly after abdullah that an Aurangazeb type of elimination of the rest of the family is near.

2) Under their rule specific non recognition hatred is there for the 2 non monestic religions, Buddism and Hinduism, something which Indians fail to recognize.

So really, there are three, not two different factions of interests in the ongoing situation.

A) Those who want the war to happen: GCC, Turkey, Israel, the US and some of its Western Allies including France. They would like to see Iran subdued and a stable GCC-led Sunni Caliphate formed that is inextricably linked to the West by bonds of economic and security interest.

B ) Those who do not want the war to happen right now (since they are at a relative disadvantage), but will fight willingly to prevent West Asia becoming dominated by a GCC-led Sunni Caliphate: Iran, Iraq, Syria and Russia.

C) Those who really, really do not want the war to happen, and will do anything they can to prevent or delay its occurrence, because they stand to lose the most as a consequence of Great Shia Sunni Conflict: Pakistan and China

Rudradevji, How do we evaluate the above in light of the recent Iran-US nuclear agreement.

Does this mean that for the west Obama is another MMS in their midst who refusing to open a new front to protect the sunni caliphate interests and hence it is upto France to safeguard western interests in the interim period.

Troops shot on Israel-Lebanon border
The Israeli army has shot two Lebanese soldiers after an Israeli soldier was killed by a Lebanese army sniper, the Israeli military has said.
The cross-border violence is the most serious since 2010, when an Israeli officer was shot dead by a Lebanese army sniper, sparking clashes in which three Lebanese soldiers were killed.
That's how you respond to cross-border attacks.

Either because the Iranians discovered Photoshop...

or the Saudis are just doing it because they can... like they demolish the Mohammed's mother's house, or wife's residence, or uncle's barn and so on...

AFAIK Korans in Arabic language, from approved printing institutes (and good quality hardbound too?) are deemed to be halaal in the great land of Saudi Barbaria. I have heard stories of Malayalam/Tamil Korans being seized by Customs officials and torn on the spot.

^^if true, that's not surprising... given that the contents of the Koran were given to Mohammed in Arabic; so translating it into Malayalam and Tamil is blasphemy of sorts, as it invariably assumes that Allah's words in Arabic can be translated and its meaning retained exactly.

Even that arabic is no longer spoken. It was a different Arabic, and possibly heavily influenced by non-Arabic tongue - a version now conveniently but inaccurately dubbed Qureshi Arabic. That is why there are significant confusions over actual word meanings and usages.

The Wahabbi Quran is apparently different from the other Qurans... despite the "Seal of the Quran" and "Seal of the Prophet". They have sublte and not-so-subtle changes only the real Hafiz types will understand. AFAIK the changes are about relationship with non-Muslims and obligatory Jihad. There is also a running claim by Wahhabis that the Shia Quran is "edited" and that their ways of praying/reciting/contemplating amount to heresy. There was a video on a Wahhabi stopping a Shia from reading the Quran in the Masjid-i-Haram.... wish my Arabic was good enough to understand the dialog.

Ornate hard-bound Qurans, high quality glossy paper, bookmarks made of silk thread/clothes are also intercepted and destroyed IIRC. Apparently, while the book itself must be respected it must not be an object of veneration and adoration and must not be beautified for that purpose. I'm still trying to dig out that actual stuff quoted by the Wahhabis to enforce the Quran standards.

we might dismiss it as hokum, but I think the obsessive lengths that theology goes to maintain these memes is a carefully tailored process designed to set it apart from everything else.

I think these cosmetics do matter. they have a psychological impact on the believer. and the positive reinforcement of "distinction" should not be underestimated. just because we Hindus have decided go to absurd length in the opposite direction of denying an identity, does not mean that others do the same, and more importantly, our choice of extremism might have insulated us from what might seem like very obvious "advantages" and "strengths" that the Islamic believer perceives in himself.

mere, absolute belief in own strength has its own cascading effect in how aggressive or docile a group's equilibrium is.

there is a film "The Grey" wherein a band of crashed oil industry workers in the artic tundra and hunted by a pack of wolves. they send the beta male in to attack at night and test defences. the team leader of the people decide they must kill , roast and eat the beta male to show the alpha male and the pack they are not afraid.
group dynamics work on visible symbols of fear and control like this.

The wahabi version is closer to the original text found in referenced to the early 9th centuries - the first that written versions of the text can be traced even in narrative references. The Wahabi's have reinvented the wheel in the sense, that they simply rejected the later - late 9-th to 11th sometime central-Asian/Persian influenced "softening" to bring back the meanings the founder possibly actually meant.

The logic used is sound - for they have tried to get back to the original context of the events as laid out even in the Shahi Bukhari ahadith [the one accepted almost universally by the overwhelming majority of the "scholars" as the closet to the "true" and the most reliable version of incidents].

Many things in that text can be obfuscated in ways to make it more palatable for the non-muslim when the muslim clergy doesnt yet have sufficient coercive power. The wahabis have done ironically yeoman job, in exposing the actual underlying context in which the ulema clearly understand the text - as a strategic guide for subeversion, deception and violence to take over non-muslim societies, and as it originally was meant to be - a lesson in strategy from the life and times of the founder. This is the fundamental reason, the ulema insists on preserving the text as-it-is, but to "interpret" it conveniently. The message if allowed to be diluted, will lose them their advantage.

If one studies the text in the context of the actual incidents, the meaning of the usage in the Qureshi Arabic is pretty clear. No confusion there.

Bahrain envoy booked for molestation, verbal abuse in Mumbai
December 25, 2013 17:36 IST

A Bahrainian envoy has been booked in Mumbai for allegedly molesting the woman manager of his housing society but not arrested due to the diplomatic immunity he enjoys, police said on Wednesday.

A case has been registered against the Consul General of Bahrain, Mohammed Abdulaziz Al Khaja, for allegedly molesting and verbally abusing on December 9 the manager of the south Mumbai society, police said.

The incident came amid the row over Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade's arrest in the US on visa fraud charges.

In her complaint, the 49-year-old housing society manager alleged that Khaja had lost his cool after one of the elevators of the building was shut for repairs on December 9. He was slamming the doors of the elevator when she saw him and requested him to maintain his cool as the elevator was under repair. However, Khaja did not stop and even ransacked her office in a fit of rage, police said quoting the complainant.

The victim also alleged that Khaja had touched her and used abusive language during the commotion, police said. She approached the Malabar Hill police, which conducted a preliminary inquiry and registered a complaint. However, police did not rush to put Khaja behind bars as he enjoys diplomatic immunity.

The police said Khaja allegedly tried to create ruckus again on December 20 in the building.

The woman said she has been working in the society for the last 10 years. The Bahranian diplomat has been living there for the last five years.

Khaja has been booked under sections 354 (molestation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code, Malabar Hill police station senior inspector Vinay Bagade said, declining to divulge further details.

Libya Holds Four American Military Personnel for Hours
By MICHAEL R. GORDON and DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: December 27, 2013

WASHINGTON — Four American military personnel assigned to the United States Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, were detained Friday and then released after being held for hours by the country’s Interior Ministry, American officials said.

The four were believed to have been reviewing potential evacuation routes for diplomats when they were detained, according to the initial reports received by officials in Washington. The State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said they were working on “security preparedness efforts” when they were taken into custody. The area where they were said to have been detained is not far from the main road to the Tunisian border from Tripoli, the capital.

After running into a problem at a checkpoint — many of which are run by local militias — they were detained and later moved to the Ministry of the Interior, said administration officials who asked not to be identified because they were discussing internal reports.

Photographs of two American passports and embassy identity cards were later disseminated on Twitter. It was not known if the passports belonged to any of the four military personnel.

The buzzing sound of drones filled Tripoli’s sky for hours as rumors spread through the capital that four Americans were missing. Drones are not usually heard in Tripoli, although the sound is familiar in Benghazi.

The episode took place in a town just southwest of the historic Roman ruins at Sabratha and about an hour’s drive from Tripoli, Ms. Psaki said. The area is not known for anti-Western extremists or other obvious threats. In part because it is a tourist area, the district around Sabratha skews relatively liberal and friendly to Westerners.

Since the attack on the United States Mission in Benghazi that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens on Sept. 11, 2012, employees of the American Embassy have operated with extraordinary caution.

But two years after the toppling of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, security remains tenuous even in and around Tripoli. Libya’s transitional government has not yet managed to assemble a credible national army or police force. Many families or clans around the country keep heavy weapons, as do autonomous local militias formed during and after the Libyan uprising.

Rigorous security rules preclude any movements outside the heavily fortified embassy compound without advance planning and an armed guard. The compound is locked at night, and no one is permitted to enter or exit.

Counterterrorism has become a central focus of the work there, and the compound brims with well-armed security officers.

The area where the Americans were said to have been detained is controlled mainly by local tribes, not the central government, which is relatively weak even in its own capital. And in the Libyan context, it is easy to imagine that a foreigner with a diplomatic passport and a gun who was stopped at a checkpoint would be presumed to be a spy and therefore detained.

The brief detention of the Americans is an experience they share with Prime Minister Ali Zeidan. He was kidnapped from his room in a luxury hotel a few weeks ago, but then released hours later.
:rotfl:

In the absence of a strong central government, Libyans have demonstrated both a propensity to use the threat of force to try to settle disputes but also a knack for working through networks of neighbors and clans to try to avoid such standoffs.

Michael R. Gordon reported from Washington, and David D. Kirkpatrick from Buffalo. Suliman Ali Zway contributed reporting from Tripoli, Libya, and Thom Shanker from Washington.
