Republic day 2014

DD cameramen need to be lynched for showing indisciplined babu's with their shabbily dressed kids rather than the fly past. The last Su30 was not even shown

i have had enough of the DD cameraman. Whether it is rocket launches or fly past by the the IAF fighters today. Pathetic. Nothing seems to be visible rather they show the crowd

Good Idea.uddu wrote:Some changes can be made in what is displayed and what should be displayed?
There can be some simple rules which can be enforced that can make the parade a lot better.
1) Always showcase indigenous weapon systems.
{ex: instead of OSA, always showcase Akash-i, ii, Arjun MK-1 and MK-II instead of T-90s and T-72s, Dhruvs instead of Chetaks. Always Pinaka instead of Smerch. This applied to things like Brahmos with Block I, II, III etc can be showcased once it gets inducted.}
2) Any induction of foreign maal will be displayed only once on the year of its induction or the next year, not on all years. Major improvements can be shown once that gets inducted.
3) Flight display always by Tejas and vertical charlie by Su-30 MKI
4) All display must meet good quality and stringent requirements. The money whatever be spend be spend wisely. Here also display indigenous tech instead of foreign maal. Arihant instead of Kilo. Even the Saryu class patrol vessel must have been appropriate over foreign stuff.

Re: Republic day 2014
Now that the spectacle is over, here is my take on badly-needed improvements to the Republic Day event:
1) Unabashed display of nuclear prowess - The republic day should make every Indian feel secure, and proud, and strike fear into the bones of the adversary. Every year India's most powerful weapons should be showcased in full glory. Not scale models or floats. Give me the real Agni IVs, and Vs. Don't drag them in a trailer for display - but drive down a squadron of full-loaded TELs. It was travesty that no Agnis were shown to pacify "Japanese" sentiments. We are a very confused people. Would we want (or can we have?) a strategic partnership with a country that does not respect us as a nuclear power? You don't earn respect in the comity of nations by sacrificing your own interests. You don't stay a nuclear power, by shying away from showing of your own strengths and achievements.
2) The President and politicians should be taught to salute properly. Watching President Pranab made my wrist hurt, and the RM's salutes to the service chiefs were more a display of disdain than respect. They must be taught the proper protocols (saluting, national flag, anthems, pledge, etc.), and failure to comply must be treated as a bookable offence.
3) DD commentators should leave the hyperbole home. No more adjectives, and meaningless phrases - "touching the sky with glory", etc.". Would rather more informed commentators speak to the sacrifices made by the men and women - in plain, unembellished, and raw language. Weapon systems must be placed in context and realism. Call a spade a spade. No point fooling the junta that the Mig-29 is state of the art.
4) The Paras should stop the double-march with immediate effect. Shows the battle (in psyops) has been lost before it has even begun. Physical toughness can be demonstrated in missions and wars - where they count. By aping the Pakis and the Iraqi Republican Guards (or whomever else), we are shooting ourselves in the foot.
5) A Contingent/Float approval committee - if in place - must be revamped. If not in place - it really shows. The floats that do not meet quality requirements must be rejected. The Tipu Sultan float was a travesty to the millions whose ancestors were raped and pilaged by this tyrant. The Lesser said about some of the obvious others the better. The Navy. DRDO and several others ought to be ashamed.
6) A sobering up of the marching armed forces marching contingents need to occur. This is a separate issue on its own altogether - Red-uniform wearing marching brass bands, bagpipes and peacock hats may have a place, but too much of a nod to colonial military traditions is not good for morale. It is a tricky thing - how to have a quintessential Indian uniqueness (core identity), a 21st century outlook (modernity), and still stay true to the past (tradition). All services need to get together and consider this issue in a comprehensive manner looking at flags, symbols, uniforms and style.
7) The camouflage schemes on Indian military vehicles and weapons systems continue to be atrocious. Bright and garish paint schemes may be overlooked by the masses, but where it counts, in the eyes of our potential adversaries - they send a hopeful message of unabashed incompetency.

^^^ Bright camos make sense during parade as the main objective is to improve visibility and appeal. Traditional army camos like the dull yellow/beige for T90's in desert or the olive green may not be that appealing to the general crowd.

Re: Republic day 2014
A very visible downgrade in the Republic Day parade this year. Very little hardware shown, a half-hearted attempt. I would say this was the worse parade in all the years I was watching it. IA as usual showed only foreign maal. Only the marching contingents were outstanding as usual. Goes without saying that the politicos are a disgrace as usual. No enthusiasm, disdain for what they are watching clearly visible on their faces, its like they would rather not be there.

You are right in your assumption that the marching contingent of the infantry is in order of precedence.rajatmisra wrote:Very basic question from a civvie: what is the order in which army marching contingents appear? In order of seniority? If that, then why were paras in the front?
And Para was in front because it is second most senior regiment after Brigade of Guards - I think like Guards, it draws its seniority by virtue of the seniority of infantry battalions which formed the nucleus of the regiment.
Re: Republic day 2014
Are you sure? The Para Regt's origins goes back just to WW II. Its the Para Cdo/SF units that trace their history back to the Guards.rohitvats wrote:You are right in your assumption that the marching contingent of the infantry is in order of precedence.

It was my understanding that the Paras lead the other contingents because they can't synchronize with the others, while double marching.

The oldest parachute formations are the following:
The 152nd Indian Parachute Battalion formed at Delhi in 1941 and was part of the newly created 50th Parachute Brigade. In March 1944, it played a role in the epic defensive battle of Sangshak when the 50th Parachute Brigade was overrun but blunted the Japanese offensive against Imphal and Kohima.
There was also a Gurkha Parachute Battalion formed from the 3/7 Gurkha Rifles in 1943 and served with the 50th Parachute Brigade. It was re-designated the 3rd Battalion The Indian Parachute Regiment in March 1945.The only airborne operation undertaken by the Brigade was a successful parachute assault mounted on the 1st May 1945 by this composite Gurkha parachute battalion group on Japanese defensive positions at Elephant point, at the mouth of the Rangoon River. Post independence, the government only retained one Parachute Brigade (50 Independent Parachute Brigade). This brigade comprised of three distinguished battalions personally nominated by the then C-in-C, namely:
1st Bn (ex 1 Punjab)
2nd Bn (ex 3 MLI)
3rd Bn (ex 1 Kumaon)
The senior most battalions;
1 Para SF (1 Punjab) traces its lineage to the erstwhile Coastal Sepoys Battalion raised in 1761 and through various reorganisations later on became the 1st Bn\2nd Punjab Regiment.
2 Para SF (3 MLI) was raised in Calicut in 1797 as the 2nd Battalion the 5th (Travancore) Regiment and later became the 3rd Bn/5th Mahratta Light Infantry.
While 3 Para SF (1 Kumaon) traces its origins to Henry Russell's Brigade at Hyderabad and was raised in 1813 and as 1st Bn/50th Kumaon Rifles. The modern day Kumaon Regiment takes it insignia from the Russell family coat of arms.
9 Para SF raised in 1966 does trace it origins to the Brigade of the Guards. It was further split into two to form 10 Para Commando in 1967 as Para Commando units. However, its senior-most battalions predate. thus it come second in terms of seniority after the Brigade of Guards.

Re: Republic day 2014
Personally I think the standard of Republic Day parade has been declining over the years. Maybe equipment was inferior in the old days, but the scale of the parade was far larger. To take one example, in the 1980s the parade usually started with a what seemed like a regiment of T-72s, followed by the same number of Vijaynatas and T-55s. Today we have a token 3 T-90s leading the parade and a solitary Arjun bringing up the rear. Austerity is all very well, but not on an occasion when the nation's military might is supposed to be on display.
Of course DD maintains its tradition of turning the cameras to the President/ PM/ Chief Guest or other parts of the audience just when something interesting turns up on the parade. I suppose the mandarins at DD believe ratings might drop if the viewing public doesn't get a healthy dose of our political personalities.

A sub-inspector of the Andhra Pradesh's counter-Maoist force was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award of the country, as India celebrated its 65th Republic Day on Sunday.
Sub-Inspector K Prasad Babu was honoured for an anti-Naxal operation during which he had led an assault unit of Greyhounds (anti-Naxal force of Andhra Pradesh) near Andhra-Chhattisgarh border on April 16 last year.
The award was received by Babu's father from President Pranab Mukherjee before the commencement of the Republic Day parade at Rajpath in New Delhi.
"Shri Prasad Babu exhibited most conspicuous gallantry, exceptional devotion to duty and exemplary leadership in fighting the Maoists and made the supreme sacrifice," a government statement said.
Babu played a key role in killing nine Maoists and injuring several others.
On April 16 last year, about 70 Maoists carried out IED blasts near the Andhra-Chhattisgarh border and fired indiscriminately on the Greyhounds unit led by Babu. He and his unit charged towards the Maoists, killing nine of them.
The next day, the commandos were being evacuated by helicopters. When, 19 commandos were to be picked up for the last sortie of evacuation, about 60-70 Maoists attacked the helicopter.
While 14 commandos boarded the helicopter, four along with Babu began retaliatory firing, according to the statement.
After the helicopter left, the Maoists began encircling the commandos. Babu then urged the four other commandos to retreat to a direction while holding the nearly 200 Maoists single-handedly until the others reached a safe spot. He died in the process, it said.
Accepting the award, Babu's emotionally overwhelmed father acknowledged the crowd with folded hands. After stepping down the dais, he greeted distinguished military officers present in the seating area.
CRPF commando gets first 'Kirti Chakra'
B N Choudhary, commando of the Central Reserve Police Force's specialised anti-Naxal team CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), is the lone recipient of the 'Kirti Chakra' for displaying "extraordinary courage" in combating a Maoist squad in the Chakrabandha forests of Bihar.
Despite sustaining severe injuries to his legs, the commando courageously fired continuous volleys of bullets to save his colleagues, which earned him the distinction of being the first and only recipient from CRPF of this military medal.
The 'Kirti Chakra' is given to honour the valour of armed forces personnel.
The gallant commando of the elite guerrilla trained Commando Battalion for Resolute Action had saved the lives of the entire squad in the Maoist hotbed of Gaya and Aurangabad in Bihar in September 2012. He also ensured that Maoists were not able to snatch the weapons of the force personnel.
Bhrigu Nandan Choudhary had received bullet injuries on his legs but that did not deter him from "crawling under excruciating pain" and helping his fellow trooper Daleep Singh change the magazine of his weapon which had slipped out of his hands because of the impact of a blast, his citation said.
The dare devil constable of the country's leading anti-Naxal operations force shares the second highest peacetime gallantry medal posthumously with D Castelino, the Indian Air Force pilot who flew the ill-fated Mi-17 sortie to Kedarnath during the last year's rain tragedy in Uttarakhand.
The CRPF has bagged the lions share of 15 bravery medals amongst police and paramilitary forces, out of which, seven troopers have been awarded posthumously for their daredevilry in anti-Naxal operations and insurgency offensives.
Two other CRPF constables Ugrasen Tripathi and Ali Hassan jeopardised their personal safety in the line of duty when they were securing a polling booth during Assembly polls in Manipur in 2012.
A hardcore militant of the NSCN-IM attacked the polling booth in Tempi in Chandel district of the state but both the daredevils confronted him fearlessly as the ultra was attempting to kill officials on poll duty.
While Tripathi has been decorated with President's police medal for gallantry posthumously, Hassan has been awarded the police medal for gallantry and is serving in the force in the same area.
CoBRA trooper Santosh Kumar Singh laid down his life while combating Naxals in the Saranda forests of Jharkhand in 2011 as he lunged on a machine gun being operated by a Naxalite as he lost his life in the process after taking severe bullet injuries.
