There is a feeling within our system that defence equipment can’t be made here and should be imported. I wanted to break this myth, so we spent our money and made a product to prove we have capability in this country, so don’t just brush us aside.

Generally the trailer is put on hydraullic jacks before launching to contain the recoil from firing

LCA:
LCA is marching towards FoC.
All the design issues on lca navy has been completed. any issues arising out of flight testing will be addressed.
NP2 will be flying much before this year end.
SP1 is already for ground run ans SP2 in assemble stage. BVR trails will be much before end of 2014
In aeronautics many of the LRUs on LCA are indigenized. We continue to improve the indigenous content to 80 %. Efforts are on.
LCA MK2 design phase is completed. we are in the process of releasing drawings for production and the program is jointly progressed along with the users.
We have demostrated 1.6 M in LCA and the it is also the same for MK2
LCA Mk2- We will initiate first flight in 2017 and production in 2019
LCA Mk-2 is an EW platform.
AESA for LCA: The design phase is cocmpleted. Many of the past products like TR modules can be used here for realising the AESA. The flying test bed that drdo plans to acquire will accelerate the devlopment
Yes Astra on Mk-2. The work is on the fast track.
LCA Mk-2 is more a product improvement on Mk-1. We are not contemplating major design changes. The future products initiated will have the option of new flight control mechanism.
No prog yet called Mk-3.
Most of the electronic equipment are based on indigenous design However few of the hardware components depend on others
Rustom -Rustom is in the initial taxing test stage we may commencce develpoment flights this year by 2018 we hope to complete the certification for induction into service
2 taxi trails.
Kaveri -
We are not planning any new platform. Our focus is on resolving tech challenges on kavevri engine and prove it to be a successful Indian engine.
The solution for the few problems in kaveri are totally indian. However at times we seek an independent audit prior to testing on engine
Kaveri is in the testing phases for endurance and reliability with multiple prototypes for certification process. We hope to succeed in 2 years after completing the airworthiness tests.
AMCA -
We are in the initial stages of project definition of AMCA. Any program of this nature requires 10 years.
We are going to see the AMCA around 2020.
Concept study on AMCA is nearing completion. The project definition phase will be started shortly.
[use of kaveri in AMCa]may not be possible. Use of kaveri for AMCA as the thrust requiremnts are different. But kaveri has potential for other programs in India
AMCA being the higher weight category will have more weapon load carrying than Tejas. Details will be worked out along with the user.
We are in the process of identifying the suitable engine
LCH - LCH is on advanced stage of flight testing for certification. one of the best products with proven ALH technologies.
LUH - Prototype is getting ready for various ground test and expected to start flying during the second half of next year. It is feasible to complete the certfication trails in two years.
IJT :
We have developed trainer in the past. and the current trainer will be indicted in the during the first half of the next year. Limited Series Production is already launched.
There are some tech issues which emerged during flight testing. The solution is in sight. the certification should be in by Dec.
ERJ145 AEWS - The testing flights are on. Possibly by this year we should have the first one getting inducted.
Now it is jointly mandated that EW systems for our military applications will be totally indigeniised.
Many of our programs on EW are already successfully realised and integrated onto the fliying platforms and naval platforms
We are already in talks with Boeing for setting up wind tunnel and high-altitude engine test facilities.
for the aerronauticla activities we are in the process of having wind tunnels and high altitude test facilties and other system houses.
We have not focused on engine development. We have initiated multiple engine development progs for both UAVs, choppers and trainers synergising the competence of DRDO, HAL and private industries. You will see Indian engines by 2020.
We are already using ASICs

AEW is delayed from June to year end! Everything else is delayed too - Tejas Mk. 2, AMCA, IJT. Only LCH and LUH seem to be progressing well.

HAL hands over Dornier to DRDO for LRDE’s exclusive use

HAL produced Dornier (DO-228) aircraft ‘Nabhratna’ has been handed over to Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) ahead of schedule in Kanpur.
Dr R K Tyagi, Chairman, HAL presented the keys of the aircraft to Avinash Chander, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister in presence of senior officers from HAL, DRDO and other establishments.

Assuring the continued support of HAL, Dr Tyagi said the aircraft is aptly named Nabhratna and DRDO will find it extremely useful. “The aircraft will be used by Bangalore based Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) as flying test bed (FTB) for evaluation of performance of various radars being developed by LRDE. This aircraft is equipped with indigenous synthetic Aperture Radar and state-of-the-art avionics and communication system,” he added.
Needs of LRDE fulfilled
Whenever LRDE needed to test any radar under development, they would approach Indian Navy or Indian Coast Guard for loan allotment of DO-228 aircraft for limited period. It was difficult to spare the aircraft because of operational needs resulting in delay in the development of radars. In view of this LRDE decided to procure one DO-228 aircraft on their own for testing of radar in air. The LRDE aircraft has been produced by HAL in little less than a year since finalisation of agreement.

No sane foreign defense firm will set up a 100% owned venture anyways. It's just too much risk so expect 75% Foreign and 25% Indian firm partnerships. After some time the Foreign partner will buy out Indian partner but no one sane will go in with 100% investment.
Just recollect Maruti employees roughing up Management...Indian workers have a bad reputation. In this case it helps!

1. Saves forex since we don't have to pay $$ for importing the gun.
2. Employment and knowledge building for Indian workers.
3. Boost to local manufacturing and improvement in quality of products.
4. Guns manufactured in Indian factories can be exported to other countries which should earn forex for India.
5. Indian companies could get into global supply chain in defence sector.
6. Tax money for GoI.

looks good @Partha...what are the cons? I mean any co that does FDI in defence needs to be sure of continous orders from Mod?? Do we get access to new technology? apart from cessation of kickbacks is there any reason for opposition to 100% in FDI...
