Dishkiyaoon at the ballot box: Mamata falls for Modi’s bait while Modi steadfastly resists Kejriwal’s
Not satisfied with that aesthetic criticism of Mamata he has attacked her political work too, saying that the 'parivartan' Didi was supposed to have brought about in Bengal has come about instead in Didi herself. He even had the gall to ask, Didi ko gussa kyun aata hai? Channelling his inner Albert Pinto with cheeky glee, he rues that her rising tempers might give her fevers, and appeals to Kolkata's good doctors to take care of her.

Now Didi is not one to take an insult lying down, topping it is more her style. 'Pehle tongue ko control karo,' she admonishes before giving her own tongue free rein. Choicest smackers follow — he's is a paper prime minister and paper tiger; the Royal Bengal tigers of Sunderbans will take care of him!

Didi also throws in some S&M spice in the mix, saying had she been in the central government she would have tied Modi with ropes and made him walk on the road. If the journey is to jail then NaMo says he's ready and eager to accept her lodgings - there he plans to learn her sweet language and also some Bengali songs!

Modi-Mamata's fevered exchanges must be making Arvind Kejriwal sigh with envy. For while Didi's keen as Dijon mustard to lob back barbs at Modi the latter has doggedly ignored Kejriwal's volleys — barring that lethal AK49 wallop. Mamata's doing Modi a service by raising his profile in Bengal, but Modi is not obliging Kejriwal in Varanasi. AAP has actually found itself upstaged in electoral theatre. Poor Kejriwal's left accusing Modi of doing nautanki and chasing TRPs — surely a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Just saw EC H.S. Brahma interview on Karan Thapar's show. Wow. Brahma was candid and accepted trouble in EC as much as he could possible on a TV show. He leaves no room for interpretation. Just like in any organization there are thousands who work with honesty, integrity and dignity. Some bad apples in all layers of the organization is all it takes to compromise it and allows political parties to abuse it.

she is steadily losing the bhadralok support. if bjp play their cards right AND work hard, they have an opening they can exploit in 2016 assembly polls, a full decade before I thought it possible in WB ! all due to one man !
Today I did my another informal campaigning for NaMo by calling people I know - all docs, engineers, lawyers ...- typical bong bhadraloks. They all said not to worry since they are going for lotus. They also told me that publicly they are keeping mum, and giving a pro-didi image.
he he, same here, there's a TMC flag flying on the gate of my house ! TMC workers wanted to plant it and I said why not.

interestingly, this time only TMC did a roadshow and sent the voter slips. bjp did a door to door promotional material delivery, although the content left much to be desired. (no lotus or modi pic in the glossy)
not a single move from left, forget cong.

In West Bengal, this is the time of Kal Baishakhi, thunderstorms that punctuate the passage from spring to a pitiless summer.

What is happening politically in the state is not much different. The last few days have been stormy, but underneath the noise lies the portent of a more profound, long-term change.

For the first time, the state is witnessing serious rise of the BJP, which has been a fringe force. The party’s PM candidate Narendra Modi has sensed a great opportunity.

Ruling Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) fiery leader Mamata Banerjee has decimated rivals. If the Left, which ruled for 34 years, is hobbling, the Congress is on its knees. There is a huge vacuum in the opposition space.

The BJP, propelled by Modi’s popularity, wants to fill it. It may not win too many seats in the Lok Sabha polls, but it has bigger ambitions: To become Bengal’s biggest opposition party before the municipal polls and 2016 assembly elections.

Not for nothing has Modi, 2014 elections’ busiest campaigner, held eight packed rallies here. Wherever you travel, he is the centre of conversation…at ‘addas’, wedding receptions, offices.

The organisation is spreading like duckweed. Primary membership has increased from 90,000 in 2010 to more than 4 lakh now. There has been a 74,000 jump in youth membership in May.

Highest jumps have been in Kolkata, Nadia, Burdwan, Birbhum, Hooghly, South 24 Paraganas, Medinipur and Barasat. Even in tribal-dominated Jangalmahal comprising three districts (Bankura, West Medinipur and Purulia), 19 new party offices have come up and membership has increased three-fold this year.

Modi seems to have found five hot buttons in Bengal.

First, the state’s thirst for the elusive ‘progoti’, or progress, after ‘poriborton’, Mamata’s now-legendary call for change.

Second, a series of brutal and highly publicised rapes like the ones in Park Street and Kamduni, and Mamata’s verbal attacks, not on the rapists but those alleging rape, has shaken many.

Third, Mamata Banerjee is facing corruption charges for the first time in her otherwise remarkably clean political career, and not facing them well. As a senior Kolkata journalist puts it: “Her attacking play is outstanding. But on the defensive, she is trying to hit every ball, not leaving any.”

Fourth, the growing perception that Mamata has appeased Muslims with R2,500 allowance for imams, putting larger-than-life billboards of praying with her head covered, or freely allowing illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to settle here and using them as votebank.

Five, Modi has found in Mamata’s emotive, reactive politics a great opportunity. He taunts, she or her party reacts with “shaitaan”, “Butcher of Gujarat”, “donkey”. Modi has perfected the art of turning personal attacks on him into his strength.

From all this, the party is significantly gaining.

“BJP was known here as the party of non-Bengalis. But the Modi wave has taken it far beyond that, especially among the youth. The response to our campaigns is overwhelming,” says Siddharth Nath Singh, the party’s in-charge for Bengal and grandson of India’s second PM Lal Bahadur Shastri. “Mamata had not accounted for the Modi factor.”

Singh looks the party’s long-term future in a state with 42 LS seats — third highest after UP and Maharashtra — with much optimism. He says there has been a near-hysterical response to every Modi rally in the state.

Also, when you speak to people from different sections, you notice an interesting pattern. They are making a crucial distinction this time between voting for a government at the Centre and electing a state government. Many feel Mamata, despite her formidable popularity in the state, may have a much smaller dog in the fight at the Centre and so their vote may be wasted on the TMC.

The BJP, however, wants to convert the Modi mania to get a stronger foothold in state politics.

“While BJP nationwide has been stronger in urban areas, in Bengal, paradoxically, it had presence in rural panchayats but was weak in the cities. This election has changed that,” says BJP state secretary Ritesh Tiwari.

Even TMC spokesperson Derek O’Brien says the difference of vote share between CPM and BJP will be in single digit this time. “But TMC isn’t worried because BJP has no organisation in Bengal, no block-level presence.”

The challenges before the BJP are enormous. Its state organisation has been rickety. Even a rapid membership drive may not give it control over most villages. Six or eight people who control each village, says O’Brien, and it is not easy to build a parallel structure, village after village.

Moreover, most in Bengal feel deeply thankful to Mamata and love her for ending more than three decades of Left rule. It will be very difficult to wean them from her.

Modi may bring in votes in LS, but to make a mark in panchayat, municipal or assembly elections, it needs a strong Bengali state leader, one who will not be swept under Mamata’s towering presence. It will also help the party shed the ‘non-Bengali party’ tag.

Among the new crop of Bengali ex-officers and celebrities the BJP has fielded, insiders praise Babul Supriyo as a hard field worker, amiable but aggressive organisation man. But will he match up to Mamata? Right now, he is not even close.

Also, although early Hindu nationalism can be traced to Bengal — Bankimchandra chronicled it, Aurobindo Ghosh and other were ideologues and took part, Shyamaprasad Mukherjee exported — its people view BJP-RSS’s ‘Hindu, Hindi, Hindustan’ heartland nationalism with suspicion, even disdain. Interestingly, Modi, in his north Kolkata speech on May 7, invoked Aurobindo and his arrest by the British from a Maniktala hideout.

{BJP would do well to draw inspiration from the revolutionary era and righfully appropriate that legacy. haripada bharati of BJS used to win assembly seat from howrah and was widely respected. unfortunately they couldn't expand in WB. even right now, the future of the party in bengal is contingent on finding a street fighter, who would be visible in every protest against TMC wrongdoings}

Mamata came to power breaking the CPM’s mighty village-level organisation with two fierce movements — Singur and Nandigram. Village after village fell to her for fear of losing land.

The BJP and RSS are spreading. Modi, not a man to say things loosely, has asked Bangladeshis to leave after May 16. A communal flare-up may pose the biggest challenge yet to Mamata’s hold over rural and semi-urban Bengal, where there is resentment over measures like the imam-bhata and fears about the allegedly growing Bangladeshi population.

In five districts the Muslim population ranges from 33% to 63%.

On the other side, alarm over the organisation-building by BJP and RSS has already triggered the inflow of money, people and arms from across the border in places like Sunderbans, say political insiders.

Just behind the current storm in Bengal politics may lie darker clouds.

I think bjp/modi made a mistake in choosing barasat for the rally and not dumdum. tapan sikdar, who has won that seat before is sulking and pc sirkar in barasat doesn't have a chance.
We think after UP, West Bengal will see the highest rise in vote share for BJP-Arun Jaitley

Rahul M-dada,
Tapan Sikdar did win from Dum Dum earlier, but it was due to the sabotage by CPM's Subhash Chakraborty. Also, Sikdar himself is cornered with in the party, doesn't have much hold once he used to, due to his expulsion for a while. On the other hand, Barasat, being closer to border, is more sensitive to BD issue. Last but not least, the NaMo's visits were chosen after careful surveys where BJP has a fighting chance.

Yes, about 10% of seats due to tampering and rigging. Let's see what comes out on 12 May for the exit polls. 280-300 is not unreasonable.

Amit Shah says NDA will win 300 Lok Sabha seats, takes a jibe at Election Commission

Like someone rightly said, pay attention when Amit Shah speaks... Excerpts:
BJP's Uttar Pradesh campaign in-charge Amit Shah on Friday sounded confident that BJP and its its existing NDA partners would win more than 300 seats to form a government. With Lok Sabha poll results just a week away, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's close aide not only claimed that NDA was headed towards a massive victory but also took a jibe at the Election Commission for refusing permission to Modi's rally, while allowing others.
On possible poll fraud and fixing:
He demanded deployment of paramilitary forces, micro observers and video recording at all booths in all 18 constituencies in UP, which will go to polls on Monday, and said that these arrangements should continue till May 16 -- the counting day.

He also reiterated BJP's demand for transfer of Varanasi District Magistrate Pranjal Yadav and asked Election Commission to deploy central paramilitary forces in all 18 constituencies in UP that would go to polls on Monday along with Varanasi as all of them were "sensitive".

"While we welcome deployment of forces for elections, why Azamgarh is being left out from where Mulayam Singh Yadav is fighting and his son Akhilesh Yadav is chief minister of this state," Shah said.

Shah said that there appeared to be some differences within Election Commission on this matter.

"I agree that the Election Commission should not fear anyone, but they must ensure free and fair polls.

"The Chief Election Commission VS Sampath should not be afraid of us as all we want is free and fair polls," Shah said when asked about Sampath's remarks to this effect.
Then this:
"In UP particularly, BJP is moving towards a historic win, although all three opponents -- Congress, SP and BSP, appeared to be fighting together.

"SP did not fight elections from Amethi and Rae Bareli, Akhikesh Yadav has supported Robert Vadra, while Mayawati came out in support of Priyanka Gandhi," Shah said.

"It's Modi versus all election, but people in UP have come out to support BJP irrespective of their castes, religion, age group and society, as they are suffering from a double incumbency -- one against the UPA government at Centre and the other against the state government," Shah said.

He also said that there were no more election programmes of Modi planned for Varanasi now.
On the Modi-thon that directly reached out to crores+ of voters bypassing media and sarkari machinery:
Shah said Modi has so far addressed 437 rallies and taken together with 3D events, roadshows and other programmes, Modi has participated in as many as 5,827 public programmes for these elections.

"Modi has travelled three lakh kilometres and visited 25 states to connect with the people," Shah said, while adding that this was probably the biggest ever public reach programme undertaken by any leader ever since the first elections of India.
Finally, the parting shot:
When asked who the BJP considered more prominent rival between Kejriwal and Congress' Ajay Rai, Shah said that BJP does not give any prominence to either of them.
Ensoi, mava.

I know about subhas chakrobarty's sabotage (lots of friends in dumdum CPM) but I felt that even with all his support, if locals did vote for lotus, not once but twice it still has a possibility amidst modi wave.

Why Modi could give Mamata more heartburn after 16 May
Bengal is a clear opportunity area for the BJP as both the Trinamool and the Left are effectively vying for the same left-minority/secular space. Neither party takes the concerns of illegal immigration from Bangladesh and aspirational politics as vital ingredients for popularity. This leaves the field open for the BJP as a truly differentiated party.

The BJP in Bengal is clearly to the right of every other party in the state – the only major handicap being its lack of organisation in the state. The problem for Modi is that the galvanising effect of his prime ministerial candidature may give him vote share, but few seats – if at all. What he may end up doing is damage Mamata’s prospects in some seats – which is why she is getting apoplectic. Modi has spoilt her party.

In states tired of the old choice between Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala) and those with almost no choice (Assam, Odisha), the BJP is looking attractive precisely because it looks and feels like it has a different message for the voter.

Didi will have more heartburn on store after 16 May.

She wants all the bengal seats so that her chances of influencing the center is maximized. Any body cutting in or thwarting her in is a mortal enemy. The fear of continuing to remain irrelevant in the new dispensation also is her darkest fear.

Despite that fake image, RaGa's rally is huge, bigger than Khujliwal though mostly bought crowd. Actually I'm hoping that Congress comes 2nd in Varanasi. That will take the winds out of the sails of gasbag Khujliwal. Can be used for psy-ops in upcoming Delhi elections.

In Varanasi, Rahul Gandhi's road show is welcome, as it means Congress has invested sufficient political capital in Varanasi, and thus Congress candidate Ajai Rai would get the secular support, and not Arvind Kejriwal. Arvind Kejriwal really could lose his deposit in Varanasi which would be a nice blot on his CV.

Any elected AAP MP should join BJP. I don't expect there to be more than 1 or 2.

Ignore these paid crowd and focus on the fact that voter turn out is at historic level. It happened in Bengal in 2011 and Didi rode to power. What happened after that is a different story though. Dynasty has tons of money, well they looted every thing, from the Netaji's INA war chest to the india treasury. They still have money power left to put on some show. NDA 300+ will be damn good start which can only be increased under NAMO's leadership.

Jayaprakash Narayan is not your typical Indian politician. He doesn’t even wear khadi, the regulation fabric. Eight years before the Aam Aadmi Party burst on to the political scene, Narayan, a former bureaucrat, founded the Lok Satta Party promising a new kind of politics. At its launch on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary in 2006, he had said the party would “work to eradicate corruption and bring in electoral reforms,” promises similar to AAP’s.
You were considering tying up with the Aam Aadmi Party…

Yes, we certainly extended a hand of friendship. After all, they are a force of change. They did not take it.

What happened?

They are too immature. They have no understanding of institutions or political processes. They have this notion of black and white (that they are angels and the rest are enemies). They have no recognition that it’s not black and white, there are lots of greys and we must learn to work across the aisle. Parties are not mortal enemies. They are merely competing groups, offering different versions and visions and ideologies and policies. If we, the reformers, do not have the capacity to carry everyone along with us and if we demonize everybody and take extreme postures (it won’t work). The other is their economic vision is totally Luddite. Everything is backward looking. They are not in the real world. That’s why we could not work together.

Are you supporting Modi because you believe decision making will be faster and things would move ahead?

Basically he seems to understand that job creation is the most important thing. I must also tell you candidly that I am impressed that he has the restraint not to offer a single freebie in the last one year. In the midst of all this freebie culture, he is one major national leader seriously bidding for power in a poor country. He is able to attract the young people without offering freebies. That itself shows serious vision. He really has a greater sense of what government is about.

This is from official unofficial CSDS guy.
Laissez-faire @FCBtheChamps

Is the real surprise of the exit polls is from Maharashtra?? Are we looking at a virtual decimation of UPA there??

No major surprises in the csds exitpoll numbers. Will allow the trps of IBN to battle Arnab.

If there a disappointment that needs to be searched in exit poll numbers, then it is BJP not reaching 272 on its own.

One of the biggest strengths of NaMo is to put Amit Shah's brain to full use. Amazing Combo.

The only senior congressman who is surely winning his seat as per exit polls is Kamalnath.
