Minutia. But the Jains and Sikhs and Buddhists want to be identified as a different religion and that matters.. and we ought to respect that as well.
That's why the word RELIGION is not I REPEAT is NOT a translation of the word Dharam the closest translation of the word RELIGION is "Sampardya" or "sect"

Sikhi is a Dharm as well as Sampardya
Jaina is a Dharm as well as Sampardya
Buddh is a Dharm as well as Sampardya
Hindu is a Dharm as well as Sampardya

What is the correct definition and translation of the word Dharm and the word Karm.

According to our land's ancient wisdom A person must abide by his Dharm (Righteous Deeds) to fullfill his Karm (Duty).

Now with this definition all people of India stand united. Some believe (Islamic or Khalistanis) that it is their "Dharam" to kill people "who do not abide by their rules as they have created " this is due to their Egoistical beliefs in their "Sampardya" EGO i.e. Ahankaar!! people who are led by Ahankaar are not Dharmic (again wisdom of our ancient land). and so forth!!

Gen. VK singh is the most apt to be a defense minister. He knows all the ills and pangs that military has to go through to procure along with all the corruption and the "Middle men".

Why not "BAJRANG BALI!" or "JAI SHRI RAM!"?

Or that all-purpose insult: Pakistan Paindabad!

Or, adapted from the Delta Airlines slogan:

Karma is what u end up doing when Dharma is what you SHOULD have done.

I think the word "Sampradaya" means, loosely, "habit", "practice", "SOP". Not so much "belief". Which is why Budhists, Jain ppl etc would probably not be thrilled to be described as a "sampradaya" under some larger umbrella set of beliefs. And that is totally cool as far as I am concerned.

It has started from the regions where they have hardly progressed

http://www.arabnews.com/news/573941

Difficult road ahead for India under Modi
India nevertheless has miraculously held together, ruled by the Congress Party, which was established in 1885 by Indian nationalists whose goal was greater involvement in the government. In time, under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, it morphed into a popular liberation movement that sought an end to the British imperial rule in the subcontinent. Alas, since independence, India’s politicians have shown themselves to be not only venal and inept, at dealing with the country’s woes, but brazenly corrupt as well. In a way, the business of politics in India has become the business of corruption, as political leaders in the Congress Party concerned themselves with the privileges of office than with addressing the country’s teeming problems.

According to the Economist, politicians and officials reportedly have taken bribes worth between $4 billion and $12 billion during Congress’s tenure.
The Indian journalist, Gita Mehta, bemused at the unabashed pursuit of self-interest by her country’s politicians, wrote recently: “Rather than undertake the duties of their office, our leaders have too often settled for redefining the privileges of office, making political corruption so endemic that winning an election in India today is tantamount to winning a lottery for the family.”
Now enter the bigots from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with their star from the state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, who trounced the Congress Party by a landslide, a resounding victory not matched by any electoral bloc in 30 years. And the BJP has indeed gone a long way. In 1984, for example, in the election that brought Rajiv Gandhi to power, the BJP returned only two MPs out of 542 in the lower house of the Parliament.

A decade after that, the party was becoming the most important force in Indian politics — shades, if you wish, of the stunning upset in the Israeli elections that brought Menachem Begin’s Herut party to power in 1977.
During his tenure as chief minister of Gujarat, Modi was indeed behind the growth of various sectors of public life. But will he now be able to bring Gujarat’s success to all of India? A herculean task if there ever was one.

Al-Guardian carries this:

Islamic militants incite anti-India attacks after Narendra Modi's victory
An Islamic extremist group suspected of having links to al-Qaida has released a video calling for militant organisations across the Middle East and south Asia to attack India and Indian interests overseas.

The video was uploaded within 24 hours of India's recent election results, which saw a landslide victory for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

...

There is no direct mention of Modi but the video – issued by a little known group calling itself the Ansar-ut-Tawheed fi Bilaad Hind (Brotherhood for Monotheism in the land of Hind) – refers repeatedly to the events in Gujarat in 2002.

The group is thought by officials to be based in the restive semi-autonomous border zone of western Pakistan and possibly to have connections to al-Qaida's senior leadership and local Pakistani militants.

...

"O lions of faith, target the oppressive and infidel Indian government's financial centres and economic interests within India and those located around the world, until Indian government reaches the brink of destruction," says the speaker, who calls himself Abdur Rehman al Hindi (the Indian).

The appeal is addressed to the leaders of independent extremist groups and al-Qaida affiliates around the Islamic world, including the Taliban, al-Qaida in the Yemen, al-Qaida in the Maghreb, the Islamic State of Iraq and others.

Must listen.Diane Rhem show perfectly summarizes what the US discourse on Modi-era India, especially under a Democrat dispensation, is going to be.

There are two tch-tch-tch Good Cops: Alyssa Ayres of the CFP and Ashley Tellis of the CEIP,
making worried but polite noises.

The two Bad Cops have to be heard to be believed. Gardiner Harris of the NY Times, with the false air of authority conveyed by being "on station in Delhi", makes not even the slightest attempt at appearing objective. He spews lie after lie, connecting the BJP and Modi to everything from 2002 to "police death squads that regularly target Muslims" to "Muslims in India being worse off than US blacks before 1960" to "blaming the victim during the Delhi (Nirbhaya) Gang Rape."

The other Bad Cop is an unknown "author" named Akhil Sharma, who does his best to prove his Sepoy credentials by squirting the most nauseating vindications of Harris' propaganda in an "authenticating" Indian accent, plus the usual litany of "Civil Society" whining points.

Sharma is and will remain a nobody. However, this Gardiner Harris (as we know from his NYT bilge) is a motivated Breaking India mouthpiece who must be opposed vigilantly and systematically.

Time to take the "discourse" away from the sh*ts and start airing the truth some. Even TOIlet has its rare moments of admitting reality:

Muslims also wanted change — rejecting fear, many voted for BJP: Sirajuddin Qureshi

Amin Ali | May 21, 2014, 12.06 AM IST

Sirajuddin Qureshi is president of the Indian Islamic Cultural Centre. As BJP prepares to form the government with Narendra Modi as prime minister, Qureshi spoke with Amin Ali about Muslim voters in this election, how the new government can reach out to minority members — and choosing the future over the past:

How do you interpret this resounding win for BJP and Narendra Modi?

This win is a clear mandate that every community voted for good governance. Despite repeated attempts by so-called secular parties to polarise the elections, Muslims in large numbers came out and voted for BJP.

These elections are a clear indication that Muslims too wanted change and a break from rhetoric. The fear being spread didn't find any resonance amongst the community.

Despite 2002's Gujarat riots being a major election issue, Muslim votes didn't strategically consolidate against BJP — can you explain that?

Muslims, like any other Indians, need a sense of security. This gang of secular parties played on their insecurities — and they got rejected by Muslims. Just by raking up one Gujarat riot, they hoped thousands of other communal riots under their rule would be forgotten.

Take Uttar Pradesh — it has skilled Muslim weavers, locksmiths, brass workers. Their industries died due to government apathy. Can they be expec-ted to vote for a party just in the name of religion while being totally ignored and deprived?

If these parties were committed to secularism, there shouldn't have been any riots ever under their rule. The community realised that while elections were being fought in their name, they never got their due. These elections should be a lesson for these parties. This verdict is a clear message — the community doesn't want to be taken for granted anymore.

The winning party doesn't have a single Muslim MP — is that worrying?

For the last 66 years, Muslims were treated like mere vote banks and constantly urged to vote for various parties or else BJP would come to power. Muslims rejected this call — now it's for Modi to deliver on his poll promises and belie the fears propagated by these parties for decades.

As for no Muslim MP, BJP fielded seven candidates from the community. Everyone lost. The party also has to look at its poll prospects.

But does zero representation worry the community?

This is exactly the perception Modi needs to clear now. He has the numbers. He needs to reach out to the community which will definitely reciprocate.

The biggest outcome of these polls has been that Muslims' apprehension of BJP has gone. One of the first steps now would be fixing the representation issue by fielding members of the community in elections.

The government needs to understand that a Muslim, like any other citizen, needs education, employment, economic growth for businesses, central assistance to set up new ventures and a riot-free environment. We can't have madrassas and Wakf policies only on paper. We need implementation.
How do you anticipate members of the community responding to this regime?

Well, the community needs to reach out to the new government. There should not be negativity or pessimism. Overcome feelings of victimhood. Appraise the government of pressing issues and judge it for the next 60 months.

We need to be open-minded and open-hearted about this new development. We shouldn't be swayed into rash decisions. Our focus should be Modi's promise — not his past.

Obama is facing crisis after crisis. I doubt he's going to be able to get Indo-US relations back on track. The anti-Modi industry his huge and I don't think he has the political capital to oppose it. He will unnecessarily ruffle too many feathers on both sides of the political spectrum. He can only do cosmetic changes and Tellis knows is. Modi wants technology and a concrete road map to UNSC seat. The US simply won't be able to deliver especially given that they will be going through an even bigger economic crisis in the near future. We can only work with them in helping encircle China and perhaps a few other minor things but we are on our own which is good. We have Russia, Japan, Vietnam, Burma, SK to work with. We will soon need to upgrade SAARC into a dharmic alliance and rope in some of the East Asian tigers. This will ensure that we keep the Chinese, Islamists, West at a safe distance.

That is half-truth..

Know that ABV govt had to face over 100 no-confidence motions. Its an expensive job to keep alliance together. I will say no more. Most of corruption of UPA-1 and UPA-2 has been to keep things together and going. and then it breeds more corruption and then some more.

Pramod Mahajan was an organizer par excellence. He was definitely being groomed for top job by ABV and he would have been ABV++.

There is a lie that was started by Jinnah and others like "one-ball" Iqbal - which was propagated ad nauseam by "secular parties". The lie is that Muslims can only be represnted by Muslims and that "castes" can only be represented by similar castes.

In this secular."caste free" model of India mooted by the Congress party and its allies people of different religions and ethnic minorities and communities were not one people, Indians with similar interests and needs, but different species - like buffaloes who need grass and need to be represented by an elected buffalo and hyenas who need dead meat and need to be represented by an elected hyena.

But let me make an observation here. The congress has missed something that I realised suddenly when I visited Shillong for a holiday after 35 years. 35 years ago Shillong appeared like a magical almost alien land - different people and a different culture in a beautiful place. But in the last 35 years India has, in a small way, become like what someone had commented about the US. Every town in the US appeared the same - the same outlets, the same retail chains, etc. the US had 'standardized" the country.

India is going that way. India has standardized the country. Be it Bangalore, Guwahati or Shillong you have the same ads, the same shops, the same Airtel hoardings, the same brands of cement, the same cars etc. Construction materials, basic house designs are similar and they are painted with the same Asian paints or Berger paint. On the same day as everywhere else, the entire town of Shillong had its school kids out on the street as they rushed for college admission forms since their school results were out. The same cars and bikes. the same traffic jams. The same lack of road rage. The same avoidance of animals on the road so they are not killed.

Peoples lives have all been affected similarly and increasingly having the same concerns. They want good roads, good connectivity, businesses, factories, tourism, economy and jobs and some pride in themselves and what they have done rather than kowtowing to some fake secular reasons for being nice to shitland or continuously facing criticism from the developed west and their chamchas for being a bullshit nation of incompetent bums.

Hopefully that goddam family can now become citizens like anyone else and let the country rule itself and develop.

The Yediyurappa faction and the "readmitted to BJP" Reddys are a problem in this regard. BJP did not do well in Karnataka because of this and Ka remains a family stronghold. The Congress celebrated corruption with supercilious arrogance. The BJP harbors corruption hesitantly, apologetically and with some discomfort. The former is a better method for winning elections as Congress has done and will do again. But both are bad for the country.

What is forgotten at the national level is that the corruption starts right at the bottom - at the corporation/city councillor level. They fund the state politicians who then fund the center. That is why defeat in the Lok Sabha elections cause state governments to fall. Otherwise there is no reason why a state government should fall if a party does badly in the Lok Sabha elections.

I will start (later) a thread about how government is constructed in India (which nobody seems to know) so that people can understand where the issues lie and how local wealth and local issues have an effect at the bational levela and how national issues get forgotten because of local corrupt politics

An honest question sir. What percentage of the articles posted in the "Positive News from the USA" is from non western sources, let alone by highly literate Indians ?
Late reply - but I was offline for a week or so.

Precisely my point. Exactly none of the Positve news USA (sarcastically - negative news about the USA) articles are by Indians.

On the other hand, negative news about India is frequently written by highly literate Indians, and these articles only add to the body of India-critical literature that non Indians might want to write, for whatever reason. The reason for this bias, in my view is because Indians are educated in a system that teaches us to admire the west and stand up to defend the west against criticism, while being derisive of India and that criticism of India is echoed in foreign media.

Those of us (and there are very few of us IMO) who get pinched by such criticism tend to react after the fact and there are not enough of "us" to "take the battle to the other side".

I believe that if India has at least 20-25% college educated and above - there would be a mass of educated Indians who could use Indian media to to be critical of the west in exactly the same way that the "Positive news USA" thread works. What I would like to see is ToI, or India Today or Indian Express saying something like this:
Just before I walked into the Vietnam war memorial in Washington I dumped my half eaten chicken leg into a nearby bin. I was startled to see a man pounce at the bin, dip his head in and lift out the food I had just thrown in and start eating it. I took a closer look - to my Indian eyes he had initially appeared like anyone else- white, dressed in trousers and a light jacket. But he was unshaven, his hair dishevelled, his jacket dirty. I assumed that he must be one of those people whom I had read about - described as "homeless", or the less complimentary term "hobo". I thought this happened only India. But in India there are dogs competing with humans. No stray dogs for competition in America - no wonder the man looked well fed.

Coming out of Trinity college in Cambridge, suitably dazzled by the history and the thought that Newton, yes, the Isaac Newton had been there, I crossed a quaint wooden bridge across the river Cam that led me out of the woods into the city centre. A short corridor led under an overhead pathway to the shopping area. As I stepped into the corridor it hit me - the overpowering stench of urine - like a street corner in India. Those wet patches on the ground were not from fresh April showers that nourished the tulips on Cambridge lawns.
Why don't I see Indians writing this stuff - both these are experiences I had, but I do not write for Indian media.

- like a street corner in India.
Did u have to do that? :P
In Ulan Bator we have Rapid Transit Systems whose electric trains and natural-gas buses flash through the canyons between the shiny glass palaces of the MegaCorporations, the tastefully bright orange-and-blue of their coaches providing a delicious contrast to the skyscrapers and rooftops gleaming white in the warm May sunlight, on their way to the posh stations with their multimillion dollar abstract art and sculpture - and their carpeted elevators emanating a fragrance of Biss unmatched by any street corner or US Embassy wall in any third world nation.

Not to mention that glittering carpet on our streets of gold on any Sunday morning - from all the beer and whisky bottles broken there the night before.

What really happened in India during the election? This happened.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/21/opinion/c ... odi-india/

The BJP, meanwhile, is the party of the Hindu heartland, culturally and religiously conservative, and generally speaking, far more supportive of the free market than Congress. The BJP is also supported by businessmen and industrialists, and increasingly, India's rising middle class.

In fashionable drawing rooms of Delhi, the BJP is frequently treated with dismissal and derision, similar to that faced by Republicans from the Hamptons to Hollywood. It is a measure of elites' continued control of India's image in both the national and international media, that Modi was regularly referred to in the media as "divisive" even after winning a popular mandate unprecedented in the last several decades.

So how did Modi, long dismissed as unelectable, manage to win an unprecedented electoral mandate for his conservative party without compromising on his principles, and what can the GOP learn from him?

First, he embraced populist conservative themes consistently against his entitled and out-of-touch opponent, Rahul Gandhi, who claimed to speak for India's common man while living a life of luxury. Modi regularly mocked Gandhi, drawing attention to his role as the scion of a political dynasty that has ruled India dating back to his great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru.

Author Gita Mehta is Biju Patnaik's daughter. She indirectly is a beneficiary of the system of which her brother is a product.

Man i sure hope that the INC would continue to place its trust and faith in the Dynasty. As after all, while journey is important. The destination (0) is all the more so.

IOW, how can the INC be rebuilt in the vision of the Crown prince. Unless it is completely destroyed, electorally and organizationally.

INC of today is not the same as INC of Mahatma Gandhi, Tilak, Ambedkar, etc. The INC has been hijacked by western forces through italian catholic called Sonia. INC of Mahatma never hid their hindu identity. Mahatma always carried Bagawat Gita. Even Nehru, and Indira always showed their hindu identify in public. In Sonia's INC any show of hindu identity is hated. They appoint tiny minority christians as chief ministers of Andhra, Chattisgarh, etc. They have not appointed any hindu chief minister in kerala for more than a generation. We need a healthy two party system one BJP and other true INC on the ideals of Mahatma, Tilak, Ambedkar, etc. INC can be purged of the western christian control only by emergence of leaders equivalent to Atalji, or Modiji in congress. My 2 cents.

Quite true. They need to find leaders who will shift emphasis to the INDIAN and NATIONAL from the CON parts of the name.

The party has become too large and way too inbred and identified with corruption. Note that parts of the present Bee Jay Pee started with the fission of the INC into Congress(O) and Congress(I), I standing for Indira, but also identified as India by many at the time (1969-). To her credit, Mrs. IG DID emphasize the NATIONAL part of the name better than any other PM to-date (waiting for Shri NM to show us new levels). The O part of the time was, IMO, a disaster, and over time they seem to have disappeared. They represented the worst connotations of the O (Organisation), the rumor being that they appointed IG to PM when Shastri died suddenly, in order to have a weak wimmen as figurehead while they pulled the strings of corruption. IG turned out to be something entirely different, brought up watching the Freedom Struggle, and the machinations of High Guvrmand from behind the curtains as a child, and the would-be-puppeteers found themselves being swung around and ejected by their own langoti strings.

Once again, history has repeated. The INC(O) set up Sonia (come on, don't tell me they could not find qualified leaders among the hundreds of millions of voters!!), but I think someone/something entirely different exploited the leadership vacuum by backing Sonia from outside India. The INC(O) netas are the ones who should be hanged for this. Then again, look at the BCCI - the buggers can't find a coach for the Indian cricket team, from among all the retired cricketers who gave their lives for India at a time when there were no helmets or face-masks. They too have to go hire gora Coaches from mediocre phoren players, but then no one considered BCCI to be anything but a bunch of corrupt goons, with the single exception that they now have Sunil Gavaskar heading it to try to turn their reputation around.

I am writing this because the BeeJayPee does not have any special curtain of immunity to the temptations of power. Most of them are as corrupt as INC(O) types, and will abuse their power. As the saying goes:
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
It remains to be seen how much Sri Modi can stomp on these. But probably there will be a few fissions of the present 338-member Majority.
