We had a point to prove in Delhi 2010, when we showed what we could achieve. With lowered government spending on sports since then, sports bodies chose to send the few who did best, not necessarily the ones who had most experience. The money has been spend well - we've more than half a dozen teenage medalists.
I am not sure where in my expectation of India using its influence to include games did I come off across as against merit or capable athletes.

We *did* include games of our choice, in our own games. Those choices, our preparation and home field advantage gave us 38 golds and 102 total medals last time. This time, the host is Scotland, and they included games of their choice. Their current medal tally is their best ever, as a result. What's so hard to understand about that ?

What is hard to understand is you, not India or the global politics :-) Last post on this topic.

Looks like there are some assured medals from the boxers and wrestlers.

Well I dunno about Leh but SA kids used to train in Ooty even way back. Esp. the distance types. There were a few marthoners but nothing ever came of them. MY personal observation was that talent was unpredictable, there were a few wildly talented kids from wealthy families who would never train because even their parents did not see the talent in them. And lots of poor talented locals who would never get a sniff in. I remember a long distance run that the son of a cook won easily once, but nothing came of it.

What ever our system was, it is wildly wasteful and lackadaisical.

Finally the wrestlers come back to their senses. Babita Kumari wins the first of our three finals today in Women's 55kg Freestyle. Yogeshwar Dutt up next. Yesterday all of them admitted to being overeager and forgetting defence.

Nice to see England being represented by women wrestlers with such 100% English names like Porogovska. Probably from Warsaw, Surrey.

Ashish Kumar finished 6th in Men's Allround gymnastics final. He's more accomplished at vault. Perhaps he will medal there.

Babita was superb. Fast and efficient. Commentators were heaping praise on the canadian lady in the beginning but once the match started and Babita started getting points they suddenly changed their line and was like she is 30+ and Indian is young etc. One more gold.

Shocking news: Dipa Karmarkar wins bronze in Women's Vault in Gymnastics. I didn't even realize we had a female gymnast, much less someone capable of medaling at this level. This should encourage Ashish in the men's vault. He medaled in 2010 AG against much stronger Chinese/Korean competition, finishing right behind world champion Yang Hak Seon.

Our wrestlers' performance yesterday affected our medal table chances. What kind of performance was that, where a world championship medalist like Bajrang loses his final 1-12 ? The post match interviews were telling. They got overconfident and forgot defence, and Canadian just had him in a leg lock he couldn't get out of. I hope Satpal gives him an earful and ensures none of them ever makes that mistake again. Sushil's attitude was much better - he stated honestly that no one was on his level and it was easy, but that he didn't lose focus, and his main goals are gold at AG in September, and then in Rio 2016.

The commentary is biased in these games. Period. One expects a neutral commentator who goes along with merit of a player and the progression of the game. But these bloody English commentators are biased. It is visible quite openly. If India wins, it's because other player or team was poor but if the opponent wins, it was because she/he played well. One should have heard the commentary during last gold won by Indian lady in wrestling against English lady of Ukrainian decent. Bloody loosers!

We have not done badly coz 50% of the shooting events are not there, gold medal events like greco-roman, tennis, archery are not there. The only major goof ups were yesterday when we lost all gold medals and in badminton.

Yogeshwar Dutt wins gold too. Match did not even last 2 minutes. He won by Great Superiority (10 point lead) by leading 10-0 within a minute and a half.

Even the youtube feed sucks. India beat South Africa 5-2 in hockey. Guess what they showed ? The two SA goals when they were down 0-4, and following tearful celebration. Then when we knocked in goal #5, feed cuts off to weightlifting even before the guy who dived to score the goal stands back up to celebrate. They don't even try to hide their bias.

Geetika lost her wrestling final. With that our wrestling finals challenge ends. We can probably win a bronze from Pavan Kumar. Today's performance was ok. Yesterday's 0/4 show ruined our wrestling contingent's overall performance.

She was looking very nervous and some kind of weird defense tactics was used. I feel if she had attacked more initially she would have had a better chance.

Vikas is usually in the 5-10 bracket in OG, so unless one of the top5 were in CWG a gold or silver was sure for him. In london he finished 8th but only 3.5meters behind the first place guy
http://www.olympic.org/olympic-results/ ... us-throw-m

the cypriot and the jamaican who got silver and bronze yesterday were not the aussie and briton seen in OG list.

we can look forward to a AG gold from him unless that Iranian guy who took silver in OG is in top form. Cheen could be juicing up someone on meds also.

Vikas performed at the same level as his OG performance today - around 63.6-64m . His best is 66.3m . For OG medal performance, he needs to achieve 67-68m; if he can maintain that level of performance he can easily win an OG medal.

The discus final was played out in rainy weather. The video showed all the finalists rubbing the disc down with a towel, for grip. That's why several contenders did badly. Delhi 2010 winner, Aussie Ben Harradine, slipped up and only managed a sub par 60m. Vikas on the other hand, managed the conditions better than everyone else, slowly cranking out bigger distances.

Getting him to OG medal standard is doable, but will take investment in training. The guy does it all by himself. With his size (2.06m tall), he could easily take on the OG competition if he's trained as well as the best.

a bit strange considering their gene pool is oriented toward fast twitch sports like sprinting...but maybe these two also demand the explosive release of energy seen in sprinting or football along same control pathways.

Rohit Sir,

It is indeed the most annoying aspect of these games...even when Sushil Bhai won...the media seemed more interested in the bronze guy from Wales. Same goes for judo commentary that Neil Adams was a world class player once upon a time but, now I have lost complete respect for him, such snubbary towards Judokas from India while commentating..

Some total of all the commentary from all the competitions where Indians have won medals has been that they won it because so and so got unlucky/had tough draws/not his day & blah blah!.. I mean do these guys have no sense at all...how can you demean a medallist like this?

I am a lot less impressed by UK's sporting prowess (particularly after the huge spend on 'Team Britain' in the run up to 2012),
after seeing that virtually all their wrestlers and the fair no of boxers & gymnasts are from the former CIS. Australia has several too.

Today we are upset because some of our wrestling medals were silver and not Gold. Barely 3 games back however, we would have rejoiced at a wrestling medal of any color. Few countries have made the kind of improvement we have, in shooting, boxing and wrestling, in barely 10 years, that too with hardly any Govt intervention. Even a week ago I would not have believed we would win a medals in Judo, gymnastics and possibly lawn bowls (lawn bowls ??).

My best moment from yesterday was seeing the TFTA wrestler (who was actually shorter and darker, than our man) lose the bronze in
the last seconds. The look on his coach's face was priceless.

Not only England even Canada. They have a shitload of migrant sportsmen. Since their own resources are rather meek, they get import the ones of suitable genepool and provide quality training. The thing is our resource pool is not limited like the western countries. We have all sorts people in our country itself and once our training standards reach a tipping point we will be right up there.

Suraj sir..where shall I begin is the question....

As a German Judoka had put it to me "it's not about who is doing it or not, it's about who is getting caught". We all know the stories of East German Athletes where using PED's was a state policy & medals were considered a victory of political ideology more than the sportsperson himself.

These days these juices are higly specialised converting themsleves into urea or other compounds present in the body to mask thier presence in bloodstream. The Chinese, Russians, USA, Canada, Briturds, East European Baltic countries are front runners in the juicing game.

Since these juices last 3 months in blood stream with certain rumored to be around 6 month the main point here is how they do it, take for example weightlifiting:

1. The coach take out their players for a season out of competetion.
2. Juice them up to dangerous levels, (this is for both male/female as you might have seen many females developing pubic & facial characterstics of men)
3. During the Juicing phase, the performances reach un-imaginable levels.
4. Coaches slowly start taking them off these drugs through quantity dilution & make them do the same weights.
5. Cold turkey period of three months keeps them off all these enhancements with focus on organic modes of recovery.
6. Private tests are conduted to establish no presence of PED's. The athlete is now realsed for next competition season.
7. Now, a lad who has lifted 250 odd kg snatch while juicing will surely be able to lift 170-180 Kg in a clean competition.

US of A leads the tally in doping with around 175 confirmed cases till date followed by Russia at 65 & India is at 12 cases. The chinese have been rumoured to feed their athletes as small as 15 high performance enhancing juices & extensive gelatine intake to reduce injuries. AG will be a good place to catch up on the latest in doping, specially the compounds in trend these days.
