But the word 'Kamma' predates the caste and it signified geographical area before that , no ?

I mentioned this in the past in one of Andhra/Telangana threads. Two caste names derived from geography are Kammas to refer people from Kamma rastham and Velamas to refer people from Velanadu.
Who those people are from these lands is different question. They probably are elevated Kapus or mix of Kapus, Brahmins and Kshtriyas. Velamas are further elevated in their status due to Kakatiyas.
Area extends beyond VGTM to all other Buddhist places in Guntur/Krishna/Nalgonda.Rony wrote:Isn't the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri area historically called Kammanadu/Kammarashtram ? May be its not politically correct now a days to use that word and instead we come up with English acronyms like VGTM. My understanding is the word Kamma (similar to the word Hindu) initially signified a geographical area and inhabitants of those area before it acquired a casteist meaning. Because of the Buddhist influence and many people adopting Buddhism > area came to be known as Kamma (From Sanskrit Karma/Pali Kamma )> Then people from that area came to be known as Kamma > The name stuck even after people re adopted Vedic lifestyle > Centuries later, it acquired a caste meaning when modern caste system came about.
