I see the reference to inscriptions. But Satavahanas, Ikshwakus and Vishnukundinas all are Brahmins or Brahmana-Kshatriyas.

We need to find the root of the word Kamma.

Karma (Sanskrit: कर्म; IPA: [ˈkarmə] ( listen); Pali: kamma) means action, work or deed;

I mentioned this in the past in one of Andhra/Telangana threads. Two caste names derived from geography are Kammas to refer people from Kamma rastham and Velamas to refer people from Velanadu.

Who those people are from these lands is different question. They probably are elevated Kapus or mix of Kapus, Brahmins and Kshtriyas. Velamas are further elevated in their status due to Kakatiyas.
Rony wrote:Isn't the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri area historically called Kammanadu/Kammarashtram ? May be its not politically correct now a days to use that word and instead we come up with English acronyms like VGTM. My understanding is the word Kamma (similar to the word Hindu) initially signified a geographical area and inhabitants of those area before it acquired a casteist meaning. Because of the Buddhist influence and many people adopting Buddhism > area came to be known as Kamma (From Sanskrit Karma/Pali Kamma )> Then people from that area came to be known as Kamma > The name stuck even after people re adopted Vedic lifestyle > Centuries later, it acquired a caste meaning when modern caste system came about.
Area extends beyond VGTM to all other Buddhist places in Guntur/Krishna/Nalgonda.

BTW 'Naidu' community is different from 'Kamma' community. Mostly in Guntur and Krishna districts Naidus are Kapus a distinct caste. But Chandrababu Naidu is a Kamma by caste. Some one more into this castes can explain better.

Isn't there a caste called "peda kApu" or "pedda kApu"? I heard that naidus could be peda kApu or kamma.

Naidu (short for Nayakudu or Nayaka) or Reddy are titles like Raju or Sharma.

For example:
Naidu can be Kamma, Velama, Kapu Naidu, Balija
Reddy can be Kapu Reddy, Kamma, Velama, or Konda Reddy (ST)

In the last century, Reddy title became a caste by subsuming all subcastes (kapu, motati, velnati etc) that used Reddy title in the past. Kammas started using Choudhary in KG delta places but continued using Naidu in South of Guntur district and Rayalaseema. Kapu Naidus and Balija Naidus still use Naidu title. Velamas still use Naidu in Rayalaseema and South Coastal areas.

Kapu, Kamma, Reddy, and Velamas all came from old Kapu communities. They were mostly farmers, small time leaders/warriors, and village heads.

CBN made a political blunder. Although there is lot of disconcert against VJA capital, he doesn't need to make these lofty promises to every district to force VJA capital. By giving these promises, he may have defused the problem but created much bigger problem for future. These sops are far bigger than loan waivers and he is on the record now. Some of them will take decades to make it happen and some may never happen. But he is on the hook now for the next elections. No matter what he does, the failure to fulfill all these fake promises will boomerang come 2019. Even a weak opposition may exploit them, especially in uttar andhra and rayalseema districts. If BJP doesn't help him, and Jagan is not in jail by then, and with potential to turn this as kamma versus non-kamma issue, he is history for the next elections.

Even if he succeeds in 50% of the vision that he outlined, AP will be developing. Winning and losing elections are different stuff. I am pretty sure that AP will be massively developing in the next 10 yrs.

There will be no Jagan in the next election and neither will be congress in India. Interesting political realignments will happen in the next 5 yrs.

Amaravati is the capital of Andhra Pradesh, not Vijayawada (as some national media portals are still saying)

Capital Construction to Begin on Banks of River Krishna Near Amaravathi
The construction of the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh may begin on the banks of river Krishna around the historic Amaravathi town and proceed on either side of the river, eventually encircling Vijayawada.

TDP sources said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on developing a river front capital and wants to have key government offices near Amaravathi on either side of the river Krishna.

The Chief Minister wants to begin works for the construction of the capital near Amaravathi. Vaastu pandits are also said to have suggested the same to him. He wants to develop the city on both sides of the river in Guntur and Krishna districts,” a senior TDP leader told Express. Interestingly, Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana had hinted at the same recently when he disclosed that the State government was planning a 184-km long outer ring road (ORR) connecting Vijayawada city , Guntur and even Tenali.

Sources said the Chief Minister’s idea was to build at least three bridges across the river Krishna above the Prakasam barrage to link national highways passing through Vijayawada and Guntur.

It is learnt that Naidu is also contemplating the development of an island in the river near Amaravathi as a tourist attraction besides linking Amaravathi town with Kanchikacherla in Krishna district. As part of the plan, several offices will be set up along the proposed outer ring road which covers Mylavaram and Nuzvid areas. “It seems development of the capital on either side of the Krishna river will help the historic Amaravathi regain its past glory, and look like modern Patna, the capital of Bihar,” said Prof GV Chalam, Dean of College Development Commitee, Acharya Nagarjuna University. He opined that capital around Vijayawada may mean areas that fall within 50 km radius of the city.

Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas has already announced that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be set up near Mangalagiri between Vijayawada and Guntur. Director of General Police (DGP) office and other police offices will also be set up at Mangalagiri. This would help connect both Vijayawada and Guntur cities and bring them much closer.

Capital construction to begin near Amaravathi

More bridges between Krishna and Guntur districts

No capital related construction will be undertaken under the limits of the present Vijayawada municipal corporation

Naidu also contemplating development of an island in river Krishna near Amaravathi as a tourist attraction

Several govt offices to be set up along the proposed ORR which covers Mylavaram and Nuzvid

Rony garu. The above article sends goose bumps for me and very nostalgic. :) Excellently beautiful. I was praying and hoping that capital to be on the far western side of Vijayawada and Guntur. Multiple targets and a great choice for the long term. That part has Krishna river but still a slight lift irrigated single crop area. However, there are vast patches of dry land is there. Water will never be a problem.

(1) Amravati is in Guntur district and infrastructure to Amravati from south and west will develop. All that is not so developed areas of Guntur.
(2) There is an Island where ferries are used from Krishna district side and the Island is called Jamala Lanka ( pretty good Jama kaya/Amrit crops come). We used to go for Picnics. The Island belongs to Krishna District.
(3) From the Island you can reach Imbrahimpatman or Mylavaram. Jaggaiahpeta, Nandigama are all too close.
(4) From any spot Infra can be developed to drive to various spots of Nalgonda and Khammam in less that an hour. TG portions can be de-kababed ;)

I did my schooling in VTPS school in Ibrahimpatnam while living in Wagon Work Shop Railway colony. We used to get fresh vegetables Mathira in Khammam district.

All I can say is hats-off to folks who got a vision to build a capital that encompasses dry areas on either side of picturesque river. Also, include the erstwhile proud and historical Amravati/Dharnikota into the mix while being close to TG using modern Infra is amazing.

Some more Capital news. I think renaming the capital as NTR will be a disaster. Amaravati is such a beautiful name with lot of history behind it. Call such a historical place as NTR city is ridiculous idea. Hope CBN does not go that route.

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/140906/n ... gn-capital
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is determined to build a world-class capital city, is spending minimum one hour every day on this issue. While studying the report given by the US-based McKinsey company on the capital, Mr Naidu is using Google maps to study the availability of land in the districts.

Sources said McKinsey has designed the buildings with 44 floors. They also proposed to build office and residential buildings on both sides of river Krishna. According to its plan, from Vijayawada towards Jaggaiahpet, residential buildings have been planned while the government buildings will be from Vijayawada towards Guntur.

A bird’s eye view will reveal that the buildings are arranged in a pattern to read ANDHRA. One of the close aides of Mr Naidu said if the state government wants to name the capital after NTR, the design of the buildings can be changed to NTR instead of ANDHRA.

Two four-lane bridges are proposed to connect both sides of river Krishna; and one is for heavy vehicles and the second one is for the general public. Mr Naidu is very particular about having a river front city.

Meanwhile, the state may get bullet trains within six months as the China railway team, which met the Mr Naidu on Thursday, told him that if the state government provides required land to them, they can build the bullet train.

Work on Vijayawada Outer ring road to begin soon:

Work on the Outer Ring Road of Vijayawada city is likely to commence within a month as the land acquisition process has been completed. National Highway Authority of India’s, Vijayawada project director G. Sridhar said that the contractor of the ORR — Gammon India is likely to start the work within a month.

Once the 103km ORR linking Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari districts, starting from Chinakakani in Guntur district to Chinoutapalli in Krishna district, is completed, it would ease traffic congestion in Vijayawada city through which two National Highways pass.

Over 50,000 vehicles plying on these National Highways are mainly responsible for the regular traffic jams.

Wonderful opportunity to have a modern city. Tunnels for utilities, use cut and cover method to save money and this is easy to do TBM's will not be needed, nobody to displace just yet. Utility tunnels will be at a shallow depth. No overhead wires and other eyesores, which can be affected by weather also. Metro tunnels can be put in by cut and cover at this stage. Even the IR railway station can be underground with an office tower on top. Being a capital, no need for a big marshalling yard. Maybe the city could qualify as one of the 100 smart cities. There are all sorts of opportunity, but does the Sheikh of Andhra have the vision?

+100. The sheiks of Andhra are looking in similar thoughts. Bridges between Islands with multiple lanes like we see in bay area of California. It is all pregnant with possibilities. The entire city is being planned on BOT model of private/public investments.

Well I don't think it will be extension to Amaravathi town. It will be newly built city so will have new name.

If the city is near to Amaravathi spanning across the river, I'm connected to that area. You're also connected there as your BRF username is nearby. :D

That is true but I hope so far all things are done rightly and CBN has nothing to prove and he should do something for legacy and hope that he will name it right. He is seriously using Vaastu folks, muhurats etc like the Vijayanagara empire's starters. (remember the story of Harihararaya et al). Looks like he is very superstitious these days.

Muppalla is the mandal where my paternal great-grandfather lived. I visited it when I was 9 yr old. My maternal ones are all on divi-seema(too rich areas) to Jaggayapeta (metta areas until 70s) areas of Krishna Dt. Guntur Dt has slightly distinct culture except of Tenali talkua. Tenali mostly resembles Krishna dt (both geographically and culturally). Irony is that I have very few long distant relations and nothing really left there. Most of my relatives are now in Hyd, TG and EG/Vizag. It enthuses to see the areas where your roots are and where you lived for a while now being changed and becoming part of a new city. Krishna Dt. is probably the smallest district but with very much varying geography. A pure picturesque delta to that of beautiful upper banks all the way into Nalgonda.

This capital area is coming in those parts that are not delta areas but abundant in water banks. However, one thing they need to keep is when polavaram completes the river levels will increase and they need to keep flooding into consideration.

Nice to see zero pseudo secularism. Authentic cultural revival is good news. Just 2 things: Buildings in shape of English letters ANDHRA.. does it gell? Also with abundant water banks, I could think of mess in keral where backwater channels have been overrun with cement etc and, in some place, haphazard planning (of water works, drain, channels) may have led to a few gluts at a few places.

Pictures : Where Buddhism flourished
Ghantasala, a sleepy village in Krishna district, offers a glimpse of Buddhism on the banks of river Krishna. One of the constructional marvels – a Buddhist Stupa, is still awe-inspiring for the visitors. A team of INTACH members visited the Stupa. The Archaeological Survey of India’s Buddhist museum is still in good shape. The Hinayana sect in Buddhism flourished in this small town on the East Coast, but some of the 2 and 3 century sculptures unearthed in the last two decades still remain unprotected and lying on the fields on the village outskirts.

Guntur and Vijayawada occupy a unique position in the world of diamonds. The geologist said that branding the Krishna valley diamonds as Golconda diamonds resulted in depriving the Guntur-Vijayawada area the credit of being the land of the legendary diamonds, and in glorifying Golconda which was about 300 km away from the mining scene. The world now has a wrong impression that diamonds were found near Golconda which is far from the truth.

Mines in Paritala (now part of Vijayawada) and Collour/Kollur in Guntur dist are main source of Diamonds for Golconda. Famous Kohinoor diamond is also from the mines in Krishna delta districts.

Then Golconda and Hyderabad were built because of wealth from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. Rayalaseema had its own precious stones (Ratnalu) contributing to Deccan Sultan treasury.

AP’s Capital-to-be, Vijayawada Sitting on a ‘Land Mine’

Image
According to information gathered from various sources, hundreds of acres have been acquired by prominent/monied people in the mandals of Kanchikacherla, Veerulapadu, Chendarlapadu, Mylavaram, Nuzvid, Agirilpalli, Musunuru, Bapulapadu and A Konduru -- all of them in Krishna district for which Vijayawada had been the commercial hub since decades.

There are also some who were said to have purchased lands in Nandigama, Mylavaram and Nuzvid Assembly constituencies, all of them contiguous to Vijayawada. Once work on building the capital begins, almost every town abutting Vijayawada is expected to benefit from the spin-off effect, thereby resulting in a sharp rise in land prices.

Khammam, Nalgonda to make gains

Two Telangana districts will benefit both in real estate and industrial sector due to the selection of Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali and Mangalagiri (VGTM) region as capital of Andhra Pradesh. Experts say Khammam and Nalgonda will benefit as VGTM urban development authority’s revised jurisdiction extends up to Khammam and Nalgonda.
The UDA jurisdiction has increased to 7,060 square km spread over Krishna and Guntur touching the borders of Khammam district on one side and almost touching Nalgonda on other side.

Around 631 villages in both districts have been included taking the total number of villages to 819, municipalities to seven and municipal corporation to two. The UDA was initially to have only 217 villages.

N. Srinivas Reddy a resident of Khammam town said, “It will be a great advantage to the residents of Khamma district as Vijayawada is only 120 kms away. But if the capital buildings come up near Nandigama and Jaggaihpet it will be even closer, almost midway. Several towns in Khammam district are less than an hour’s drive. For instance, distance between Madhira to Vijayawada is only 68 kms.”

Realtor V. Ravindar Reddy, MD of Gouthami Builders, says, “Until recently several layouts in Khammam and Nalgonda districts had no takers. Now with VGTM UDA area declared as capital region enquiries have shot up.”

Interestingly, several villages in Krishna and Guntur districts are not even aware that their villages are included in VGTM. A top official of VGTM engineering department said, “It is true that many villagers don’t know their inclusion into the VGTM UDA area.”
