Debate on Human Rights Situation in Kashmir Causes Stir in UK Parliament
A debate on the human rights situation in Kashmir to be held in the UK Parliament building tomorrow has caused a stir among Indian groups here who fear it could be used as an India bashing opportunity.

Liberal Democrat MP David Ward has secured a 'General debate on political and humanitarian situation in Kashmir' as part of the regular Backbench Business Committee application process in the House of Commons.

Based on a petition by the 'Jammu & Kashmir Self-Determination Movement' which gained around 5,000 signatures, the Bradford East MP was able to push for the debate calling Kashmir dispute a "threat" to regional and global peace and to give the people "right to self- determination".

It has raised concerns among some Indian groups regarding the timing coinciding with the September 11 attacks anniversary as well as the focus of the debate.

"A number of British Indian organisations have contacted us expressing concerns on this Kashmir debate development in the House of Commons at this time because they fear that it could be used as an India/Indian bashing opportunity," said the Leicester-based British Hindu Voice in an appeal to its local MPs.

"If possible, please speak in the Kashmir debate and let your constituents know your and your party's stand on this subject," the appeal adds in reference to Leicester MPs Keith Vaz, John Ashworth and Liz Kendall.

The British Parliament's Backbench Business Committee meets weekly to consider requests for debates from any backbench MP on any subject, including those raised in e-petitions or national campaigns.

These debates are held in a chamber within the House of Commons complex and aimed at lobbying UK government on specific issues.

Around 20 British MPs, including Ward, Labour's shadow finance secretary Shabana Mahmood and secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Kashmir Richard Harrington, are lined up to address the debate.
The succumbing by UK Parliament to communal pressure of Mohammadden’s of Pakistani origin residing in the UK has not gone down well with India.

Deputy High Commissioner for India in the UK, Dr Virander Paul, in a message believed to be aimed at senior UK Cabinet Minister Vince Cable to reign in his fellow party man David Ward who initiated this debate at the behest of his Pakistani origin Mohammadden constituents said: "From time to time, we find that there are certain tendencies in certain sections of the society, which are not in the interest of our strong relations."

In the US, interference in the activity of an emergency personnel is a crime and is a Class A misdemeanor or a Class I felony, depending on the state in which the crime has been committed. I am sure it is the same in India as well.

As Army battles Kashmir floods, Hurriyat disappears
....
One wonders where the inestimable Mr. Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his gang of so-called separatist leaders have disappeared. Are they not self-proclaimed true voices of Kashmir? Are they not the torch bearers of the Kashmiri struggle and custodians of Kashmiriyat? Why are they silent today? Why are they not out in the streets with their cadre supervising relief work, or at least standing by with those who follow them in their incessant stone pelting?
Surely some of the money that they profess to collect from the people of Kashmir as Zakat (donation) for their cause of "independence" can be diverted for the good of the people under such testing circumstances.
It would be great to see Syed Geelani giving even a biscuit to a child. It would be a welcome change from the incessant demands that he makes all the time.
The state administration that holds primary responsibility for dealing with the situation is, by itself, in a state of shock. It has been caught off-guard.
Busy in playing out local politics, it has not paid attention to issues such as disaster management. It is the people who are now suffering the brunt of its ineptness. ....

These UK scums, when they come to India are all sugar coated words and give us more business. And then, snap, they show their true colors. Apt for them is the saying: Snakes will be snakes. In the time of a natural calamity, instead of supporting the govt effort, they are out to pressurize. Their moral debates couldn't wait for a better time. About the stone pelting, I firmly blv the mission 44 of the BJP is of utmost importance, JnK needs a nationalist state govt. Kudos to the army for its fantastic job.

That is dated. As per 2011 census the valley population is almost 7 million, the rest a little over 5 million.

Stone pelters target choppers, planes, boats in J&K relief operations
Even as the men in uniform continue their relentless efforts to provide succour to flood victims in the Kashmir Valley, their aircraft and boats are being targeted by stone pelters.

Some of the 80 IAF aircraft involved in relief and rescue operations across the flooded Srinagar city have suffered minor damage after they were targeted by stone pelters but the security personnel say they "won't give up" till help reaches all.

A rotary wing plane of the air force suffered damage during stone pelting during one of its sorties to undertake rescue operation in the city.

"There have been incidents when the helicopters flying at low altitude were targeted with stones and one of the helicopter was in fact hit by several stones causing some minor damage on the body and near the rotary wings," a senior Air force officer said.

The officer said that the helicopter, however, returned safely to the base where the damage was being assessed.

The Army too says that some of its boats deployed for relief and rescue operations were attacked by stone pelters.

No, Rudra would have the chin mounted gun in that spot. May be mk3 version as Abhik mentioned or a specialised CSAR variant.

Look how the Washington Post is spinning this - feel free to post in the comments section about their coverage.

Anger rises in India’s Kashmir Valley as people remain trapped a week after floods
Instead of moving in to help keep order among the starving crowd, Indian army soldiers watched from a parapet next door, laughing and filming the scene on their smartphones.
A slow response by both state and national authorities to the worst flooding in Kashmir in decades has angered local residents and inflamed deep-seated resentments in this Muslim-majority valley in the Himalayas, the subject of dispute between India and Pakistan for decades. Separatist sentiment remains strong in Kashmir, as many still see the Indian government as an occupying force.

Thus, after thousands of residents remained trapped on the top floors of their homes for days — waving from rooftops in scenes that evoked 2005’s Hurricane Katrina — many residents directed their ire against the Indian army. They have even pelted military rescue helicopters with stones.

Okay, folks, there is method in the madness of stone pelting. I suspected it, but here seems to be what is confirmation.

So - the scum are stopping the rescue forces from reaching the Hindus. These are the characters the rescue forces have already likely succoured. Such outpouring of secularism ought to make even the most secular like Sagarika happy.

One hopes the Kashmiri Muslims in the rest of India aren't given the same treatment. Stone pelting and denying access to food and water for days are serious violations of the code of civilised men. I am open to the possibility that it may be the cultural practice in Kashmir and/or Muslim lands.

Srinagar has also been hit by looting, leading some householders to risk their lives and stay with their homes to protect their property.http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/s ... mir-floods

But not on the same scale as blacks in New Orleans. The looted should be thankful it's Kashmiri Muslims and not Hindus doing the looting.

Was brawsing TV news channels and I saw some reports of national emergency rescue teams talking of their staff requiring security to carry out emergency rescue. Seems human rights people have gone silent about attacks on rescue teams! What if it were Hindus pelting stones instead of separatists? - that would make international headlines! In any case, tens of helicopters bearing brunt of separatists is very serious matter, though 'international' media aren't too bothered about that either, not to mention looting and forcing people to shout slogans of shitistan zindabad whatever. Wish the govt is serious to end these attacks soon and spend monies from Kashmir relief package to repair the helicopters ASAP.

Supreme "court" at it again!!

Will the GOI waste it's time in such important pursuits or get on with job of providing aid and relief??

Maybe, NDRF should be made a constitutional posting and 20 retired judges should be posted on the management board with full benefits and equivalent status/rank of prime minister,

J&K floods: Supreme Court seeks Centre's report on disaster
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today said "a calamity and disaster" as huge as the one witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir floods "deserves national response" and asked the Centre to apprise it on Monday on the urgent steps undertaken to accelerate rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations.

The apex court, which noted that "massive floods in Kashmir Valley have created horror" affecting more than 400 villages and stranding five lakh people, also asked the Centre to consider forming a Unified Agency for proper co-ordination of work.

It appreciated the effort of the Centre and armed forces but declined the suggestion of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that it was not appropriate at this juncture for the judiciary to intervene and entertain petitions.
Over 200 died and thousands were stranded in J&K floods.

"Don't treat this as an adversarial litigation. In the past also this court has intervened when disaster of high magnitude struck Uttarakhand and other states," a bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha said, while dealing with petitions seeking direction to the Centre to declare the present situation in the Valley as a natural calamity and national disaster.

The apex court said efforts should be made by Centre and the state Government to make functional constitutional offices like High Court and offices of administration from some accommodations in Srinagar.

"How will you communicate the order of this court?" the bench also comprising justices Kurian Joseph and RF Nariman said, while speaking about the current situation in the state.

"The executive and judiciary should start functioning in whatever way. Some accommodation must be made available so that judiciary starts functioning from the city of Srinagar. The High Court is the symbol of Constitution and face of judiciary. We would like High Court to start functioning immediately from any place in Srinagar even with two or three rooms," the bench said.

The CJI said even the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar was till yesterday stranded in Jammu and they had spoken over telephone.

The bench took on record the statement of Attorney General that "Union of India is conscious of the seriousness of the situation and a committee headed by the Prime Minister is overseeing and coordinating the rescue and relief operations" and "rescue operations by the Armed Forces are working in full swing and the Chief of the Army Staff himself is monitoring these operations".

The bench also accepted some of the suggestions made by Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party chief Bhim Singh, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves and other petitioners and said "Government of India may also consider forming a Unified Agency for proper co-ordination of rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations".

In the order, the bench said, "We have no doubt that Government of India is concerned about the calamity that has affected large number of people in the Valley".

"We are sure that the Union Government will take all necessary steps urgently in accelerating the rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations," the bench said, while taking on record the note by Gonsalves enumerating suggestions to deal with the emergency situation in the flood-hit state.

The bench had sent a message to Attorney General to appear in the matter and assist the court as none of the petitioners had served the copy of the petition either to the Centre or the Jammu and Kashmir Government.

"Just passing order on paper will have no impact," the bench observed and said it would not pass any order before hearing the top law officer.

The bench in the order said that petitioners do not dispute the commendable work being done by the Armed Forces in rescue operations but they submit that the current rescue operations are too inadequate for such a huge calamity.

"It needs no emphasis from us that a calamity and disaster as huge as this deserves national response so that immediate relief is made available to the victims of floods," the bench said.

The bench said, it goes without saying that supply of food, drinking water, medicines, fuel and other essential supplies deserve top-most priority and also the restoration of communication and provision for health-care facilities.

"After all, lives of people who are affected by such disaster have to be saved," the bench said while posting the next hearing for September 15.

Gonsalves placed a note which mentioned that eight districts namely; Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Budgam and Srinagar are gravely affected by the floods.

The note also stated that there is immediate requirement of large number of helicopters, doctors, medicines, food including pediatric food, baby articles, blankets, life jackets, drinking water, sanitary pads, tents, warm clothes and footwear, fuel and other essential supplies.

The petitioners submitted that for such massive tragedy, the national response is required and Union of India must declare the present situation in Kashmir Valley as a natural calamity and national disaster.

The apex court said it is also suggested that for meeting calamity and disaster of this magnitude, all the States and Union Territories of India must be immediately encouraged to respond and provide the requirements.
