He didn't do anything apart from hand over Indian taxpayers money..they and ISRO take the credit, if anything.
NYT is right. Modi has absolutely nothing to do with this other than the speech he gave today. That is fine . He is after all the elected PM of the day.

But let us not miss the wood for the trees and acknowledge the contributions made and who created this mission in the first place. Modi could have been more gracious and acknowledged MMS in is speech, when he spoke about Vajpayee and Chandrayaan.
Acknowledge the jerk who called him names, ran a corrupt empire and made a mockery out of the Indian state? Modi was gracious enough to allow MMS to attend the function. Anyone else would have ensured MMS was nowhere near the function.

When Modi gave credit to Vajpayee for inspiring Chandrayaan, I expected him to mention MMS in passing for Mangalyaan. It would have been swell, if Modi had done that. Politics is nasty; and he missed that bus and played partisan politics. A tad disappointing that he did not take the high road.

I hope, at least we BRFites, don't bring MMS vs Modi; or Congress vs BJP into these discussions.

The Spacecraft is now circling Mars in an orbit whose nearest point to Mars (periapsis) is at 421.7 km and farthest point (apoapsis) at 76,993.6 km. The inclination of orbit with respect to the equatorial plane of Mars is 150 degree, as intended. In this orbit, the spacecraft takes 72 hours 51 minutes 51 seconds to go round the Mars once.

As Mangalyaan achieves success in its first attempt, pressure builds on it to settle and get married
New Delhi. As soon as Mangalyaan started orbiting Mars this morning after covering a distance of 670 million kilometers, thus achieving an envious professional milestone, pressure has started building on it to “settle down” by getting married.

Parents from different parts of the country, when asked for their reactions on Mangalyaan’s achievement, expressed their happiness, but quickly added that the Mars Orbiter should now focus on personal life.
Mangalyaan

Time to enter next phase of life.

“Covering 670 million kms is not less than completing engineering, and our Mangalyan finished it on time. That means without any year back,” Suresh Sharma, a concerned father of two told Faking News.

“I think it should either go for higher studies, or if it is happy with its current job, then it should marry,” Mr. Sharma said.

“You see, going for a higher studies could be good for Mangalyan’s career. As of now it’s just an orbiter, but after doing some PG course it may become a rover,” Mr. Sharma explained benefits of higher studies.

“But I think he shouldn’t take much professional tension, and get married now,” he added.

Anuradha Aunty, wife of Mr. Sharma, even suggested names of some possible life partners for Mangalyaan.

“NASA’s MAVEN is doing the same work what Mangalyaan is doing and is also from a respectable family. They will make a good couple. But if Mangalyaan goes for higher studies and become Mars Rover, then, I think we can target NASA’s Curiosity Rover,” said Sharma Aunty, showcasing her expertise in the matter.

Sharma Aunty predicted that if Mangalyaan and Curiosity Rover somehow fell in love with each other and got married, then it was quite possible that Mangalyaan could relocate to Mars surface without being a Mars Rover.

“All I want that Mangalyaan get married as soon as possible. Kab tak akele akele Mars ke chaaro or ghoomte rahega,” a visibly concerned Sharma Aunty concluded.

Not just parents, Mangalyaan is attracting interests of priests too as he appears to have settled professionally. Janardhan Chaturvedi, a celebrity priest who hosts a separate show of his on a news channel expressed his concerns about Mangalyaan being maanglik.

“There are many eligible satellites revolving around the Earth. But as they are not maanglik, we should avoid them and better look for Mars centred satellites,” Janardhan Chaturvedi suggested ISRO.

Meanwhile, a letter has been written by Hidustan Vivah Manch to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to discuss the prospects of wedding of Mangalyaan and MAVEN during his upcoming US visit.

“It is time for India and America to turn their dosti into rishtedaari,” commented head of Hidustan Vivah Manch.

Modi was there not only by the capacity of PM but he is also minister of Department of Space. So he has more to do with it than just give speech like past PMs did.

Abhinandan to ISRO scientists and everyone who participated in the mission directly or indirectly. Huge achievement for Indians who could insert Mangalyaan to Mars orbit with precision on the first time.

Kripa of Swamy Venkateshwara at this achievement of high order.

VinaJi, with all due respect, cut the crap. MMS was the most shameful, disgraceful PM India every had. In fact, looking at him and his wordview, he has nothing, nadaz, zilch in common with those simpleton scientists and engineers gathered at ISRO. MMS more is more of a "house negro" for US/UK, and loving cousin of Pakijabis. It is Cong's shame that they could not find any other able leader than this disgraceful man.

I didn't expect MMS to talk about it after keeping Maun vrata for 10 years and busy doing /allowing others to do scams after scams.''' CWG, CoalG , 2G, 3G, 4G ( remember it ) SG, RG, PG, IG and so on so forth. The credit goes all to ISRO . MMS was busy doing $G there.

It was conceived by ISRO and was in three+ years in preparation as a result of success of Chandrayaan which was the idea proposed by ABV.MMS is insipid, lacks inspiration and new ideas. he could not have spoken of it first. MMS merely announced it from Red fort to avert attention from scams or like a doorman announcing arrival of guests.

Like foreign policy, space policy is also a product of national consensus and there has been continuity in all administrations. It started with visioNaries like Sarabhai who persuaded Nehru.

We should take pride in robust civilizational memes and go beyond petty focus on personalities.

Why can't ISRO raise the periapsis to above synchronous orbit and leave the satellite in unmaintained orbit beyond six months? No reaction wheels on the spacecraft for attitude control?

As a respite from the western press, here's some interesting news from PRC:
http://world.huanqiu.com/exclusive/2014-09/5149149.html (needs Google Translate)

The Chinese pronounce the Mars craft's name as Man Jia Lian . Looks like they did not get the memo on soft g vs hard g .

Asian reporting is generally positive and admiring. Credit given as due.

Post processing. Processed photos have been sent to PMO.
To answer your earlier question on RGB24/32, it will be difficult to guess the internal implementation. It depends on many factors - memory structure, image format etc.
