Ramana garu / sachin:
Raman does seem to suggest that solemn promises were made by officials representing GoI and that they should be honored. While there is no doubt that this terrorist deserves the fate for 26/11, if such promises were made, we cannot go back. That would kill any chance of our agencies being able to make similar promises to anyone else in the future. We would lose credibility. There is no reason for Menon to move out of Pakistan to Nepal.

Unless we think Sheela Bhatt is fabricating this email from B.Raman, it is a serious thing to consider. The only question that needs to be asked and answered is was there any sort of promise made by Indian intelligence officials on line of duty and whether or not we are honoring that.

To be quite frank, if there was such questions they should have been brought up during the various stages of trial. My understanding is that this case has been pulled over three courts (TADA court, High Court and Supreme court). All during this time Yakub Memon knew that he is being tried as an accused (and not considered as a witness or an approver). Why did he not make a big fuzz at that time? He had multiple avenues to claim that he had been framed. He should have sensed some thing going wrong, the moment the lowest court gave him a death sentence. But he kept quiet.

Police reports say that he was arrested from New Delhi Railway Station. Did he try contesting even that part? He has not been able to prove that GoI in any official capacity had promised him leniency. Intelligence Agencies any way work many of their deals off the records. Memon has not been able to show any such proof that he was deliberately mis-led. At the worst case, he may have taken the second opinion of some other gangster (who may be a double-agent for Indian agencies) whether to return to India or not. That chap may have said all is fine, go there and every thing would be all right. But was all this done by GoI in any official capacity? I don't think so.

As I see it, Yakub Memon & Co have now fully realised that things are soon coming to a close. And now they are coming up with all sorts or ridiculous theories and stories to some how wiggle the way out. That is expected as a dying man, may even catch hold of a fig-leaf in attempt to save his life.

INDORE: Thirteen years after the horrific burning of S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express which triggered the Gujarat riots, the prime accused in the Godhra case, Hussain Suleman Mohammad, was arrested from Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday. Hussain (35), who concealed his Godhra background all these years and worked as an auto-driver in Jhabua, was picked up by the Godhra crime branch. Inspector D J Chavda said Hussain was produced in court and sent to 12-day police custody. Soon after he was named accused, Hussain fled Godhra and shifted base to Jhabua, which is 120 km away. While in hiding, he got married and fathered two kids. Police sources said he could have easily lived in Jhabua all his life had he not visited his family in Godhra during Ramzan. This alerted the Gujarat police which started the probe.
With the help of relatives and friends, he bought two auto-rickshaws and became a bonafide resident of Jhabua by procuring his driving licence, ration card and Aadhaar card. Jhabua SP Abid Khan said, "Godhra police did not inform us about on-the-run accused. Had Gujarat police handed over documents and tipped us off, we would have acted fast." In February 2002, Suleman worked as a tea vendor at Godhra railway station and was one of the attackers who locked S-6 coach to set it ablaze, the Gujarat police said. At least 59 kar sevaks were killed in the ghastly incident that sparked off mayhem in the state that claimed over 1,200 lives.

Think about it. You have around 15 religious bigots (but semi-literate, or illiterate) who actually went ahead and placed the bombs. You also have one smart chap, well educated, not from a poor background and who can expected to have a more rational thinking. This person actually finances and coordinates the logistics required to have the bombs placed. Who is more dangerous? Whose killing would have a better impact on the society? I would prefer to have an illiterate terrorist (who may make mistakes and goof up the show), than a fully literate, smart terrorist (who would come up with better plans). Yakub Memon is just the 'smart terrorist' out here. Death sentence for him is a message for other 'intellectual terrorists'.

But Sachin Sir, the point is how did we get Yakub? If we gave him assurances, he should not be hanged, guilty or not.
If he was not given assurance, then question of guilt comes in. It has been proven guilty by court. All the logic that we hear now about him being non guilty, is only part of the story, the full story his competent lawyer would have told. The judges then decided that he was guilty.

What should be avoided is guilty by association or revenge attitude. I do not know if that is the case, the current media makes you think so. But the same media said, that Modi has horns, that all Hindus rape their daughters, are mean minded....I have not found that to be true, so I do not trust them. I have found them to be lairs. In fact when they say someone is guilty I conclude they are not.
I see no mention of the fact that was he given assurance or not?

As per the official records (which I am sure the courts would have verified), Yakub Memon has been arrested when he was at New Delhi Railway Station. It is said that he came back from Pakistan via Nepal and reached New Delhi. There are unofficial reports that he was actually detained by Indian agencies in Nepal itself, where as the arrest was "shown" to be made at New Delhi. Now why did he land up at Nepal? We really don't know. But Government of India has not given any formal statement, or any promise to Yakub Memon. So unless he can prove that Government of India made some promises and is now back-tracking on it, he does not escape the hands of the law. This fellow had got nearly 10+ years to prove the point that GoI is backtracking on its promises. He has not done that at all. If Yakub Memon was lured into Nepal by some trick, then it was his fault to fall into the trap. This excuse of promises made by GoI, are just pathetic attempts to escape justice.
If he was not given assurance, then question of guilt comes in. It has been proven guilty by court. All the logic that we hear now about him being non guilty, is only part of the story, the full story his competent lawyer would have told. The judges then decided that he was guilty.
Exactly. This case has gone through multiple trials and appeals. We should seriously have our heads examined, if we feel all during these stages the case were heard by an inefficient judiciary, or conducted by incompetent lawyers. All through this time, Memon's lawyers have not been able to punch holes in the prosecution's charge sheet. There are statements given by approvers who clearly have proven the role of Yakub Memon. The media also relies on the sob stories of Memon's wife, and consideres her statements to be the absolute truth.
What should be avoided is guilty by association or revenge attitude. I do not know if that is the case, the current media makes you think so.
This is not a case of guilty by association, as there are witness statements which shows Yakub's role. If these statements were inaccurate, Memon's lawyers would have broken that story by now. This is also not a case of revenge, but a kind of message to wanna-be terrorists that delayed it may be, but justice would be served. The media as always is just going along the expected lines. Memon is from the minority community, and that itself sets the agenda. The media was silent when Dhananjoy Chatterjee a "poor" criminal was executed for rape & murder. The media is also resorting the cheapest tactic which is taken by even a pick pocket, that is "Do a,b & c things before arresting me". A pick pocket will demand police arrests all dacoits before arresting him, dacoits in turn would demand, rapists and murderers to be arrested first, and they would in turn that politicians involved in scams should get arrested first. These are all just excuses to get away from the hands of the law.
harbans wrote:i am not aware of Yakub financing the blasts. Any links? AFAIK from available resources Dawood and Tiger planned the whole thing. Finance arranged ISI/DI, planning too a combination of ISI/DI/TM
May be I did not explain correctly. When I wrote "financing", I meant covering the financial aspects of the whole nefarious operations. Not generating the funds, but using the funds effectively.

Ujjwal Nikam on Yakub's role.
The evidence against him and some of the key accused was clinching. Yakub Memon was among the key conspirators who had left Mumbai before the blasts. He had been part of the conspiracy which was hatched in Dubai.
....
He had travelled to Dubai for the meeting which was attended by Dawood Ibrahim and three other Pakistani nationals. The conspiracy was hatched in Dubai and then people were taken to Pakistan for training in how to use RDX-laden bombs and other weapons like rocket launchers.

From India Today..
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the curative mercy plea of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict, Yakub Abdul Razak Memon , clearing the way for his hanging expected on July 30. Memon was awarded the death sentence by a Special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) court in Mumbai on July 27, 2007 for his role in the blasts, including arranging finances for carrying out the 13 serial explosions which left 257 dead and over 700 injured across the city on March 12, 1993.

Wtf? Are we discussing on BRF this monsters guilt after the SC has upheld his death sentence, on the basis of some email about alleged assurances given by "the government"? Put out by a known disruptionist ideologue?

I don't give a flying f**k how we "persuaded" him to return to India. What next? If we persuade Dawood the same way, we should give him a light sentence just because we "promised"?

Security grid needs to come together to counter ISIS: Army - PTI
A top Army commander today said there are no large footprints of ISIS in Jammu and Kashmir but the outfit was "creeping towards this side" and the security grid has to stop the "terrible" organisation from getting a foothold in the country.

Northern Army Commander Lt General DS Hooda also expressed concern over a number of youth joining militancy, but said the numbers were not large to transform the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters after laying wreath at the war memorial here and paying homage to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil war, he said, "There are no large footprints of ISIS in Jammu and Kashmir. Yes, there are incidents of flag waving that we have seen.

"Is it a matter of concern, yes it is. Because ISIS is such an organisation with such radical sort of ideology and views that we should make sure that it doesn't even get a hold and it has no place in a democracy.

"And therefore, there is a reason for us to see how to fight this ideological battle and frankly that is the plan at which it will get fought. So for us who are concerned with security and those concerned with governance, everybody has to put his head together and make sure that this very terrible organisation, if I may call it, doesn't get a foothold in India," he said.

The army commander said the creeping of ISIS into the region is a matter of concern.

"We are seeing it (footprints of ISIS in the region) slowly. We have already seen it in Afghanistan. There have been numerous incidents of conflict between ISIS and the Afghan Taliban. The ISIS is trying to gain some influence in Afghanistan. We have also seen factions of TTP which operates in Pakistan which has pledged their allegiance to ISIS.

"So there is a creeping towards this side and definitely it is a matter of concern that their coming into closer and closer into our region," he said.

The army commander also voiced concern over a number of youth joining militancy.

"There are reports that last year, according to our intelligence figures, about 60 local recruits, mostly from south Kashmir, and this year about 30-35 is the figure that we have. The number is not that large that it will transform the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir."

"But obviously, it is a matter of concern when young people have now slowly again started picking up the gun because two-three years back, the numbers were single digit - five, six or seven - that was the kind of recruitment taking place," he said.

Lt Gen Hooda said the establishment has to look at the issues of alienation and employment to counter the trend.

"We have to look at this. The youth engagement is something that everyone talks about, like how to do, do they have enough employment opportunities, that there is a sense of alienation and how to tackle that. These are the issues that we have to look at," he said.

The semantics of "persuation" matter here. the debate in BRF is not on whether Memon is guilty or whether he deserves the punishment. I doubt there is any second guessing on that aspect. However, if a solemn promise is made by officials representing India, it needs to be honored. Violating it will make us lose credibility and prevent us from generating approvers in future cases. We can argue that there is no solemn promise made by officials representing GoI and that would be a fair argument. However, it seems to contradict B.Raman, who was one of the key players at that time from GoI.

http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-da ... rt-2108365

Dawood Ibrahim had contacts with high-ranking Indian politicians, internal involvement made 26/11 possible: Report
More shockingly, the report claims that at least two senior NDA leaders and four UPA leaders were in contact with Dawood before 26/11, but all but one of the six dropped their association with him after the attacks. The last politician also stopped contact with him in 2011. In fact, Dawood in 2006 travelled on an international flight from the UAE to South Africa and the seat next to him was occupied by a senior politician who knew whom he was talking to throughout the journey, claim the US experts to Sunday Guardian. The counter-terrorism experts say that Dawood's family is "almost totally unaware of the new identity of their internationally known relative as given in the travel documents", supplied to Dawood 12 years ago, and that these papers are used "only while travelling internationally and domestically and in financial transactions", so that the names and aliases of Dawood do not come up on any record, including those of banks and airlines.Dawood however no longer uses the phone, claim the experts. They state that he has also restricted his movements within Pakistan since 2012. Lastly, the experts commend Ajit Doval for his efforts in bringing back Dawood to India, but say this is extremely difficult due to his new identity and the lack of cooperation on the Pakistani front.

Chandigarh: Suspected terrorists from Pakistan early Monday fired indiscriminately in Punjab’s Dinanagar town in the frontier district of Gurdaspur, leaving at least three people killed and five injured.

The terrorists fired at people near the Dinanagar bus stand and then attacked the Dinanagar police station.

Dinanagar town is close to the Jammu and Kashmir border.

Meanwhile, Army deployed one of its unit from Pathankot to take control of the situation.

A gun battle was on between the terrorists, holed up inside a police station, and security forces. Five bombs were found on the Amritsar-Pathankot railway track.

The Home Ministry has also dispatched a team of National Security Guards (NSG) to help in neutralising the gunmen.

The terrorists, believed to have come from Pakistan border side, fired at people near the Dinanagar bus stand and then attacked the Dinanagar police station. Eyewitnesses said the terrorists fired on a bus going towards Jammu and later moved towards the police station.

Police sources said three to four terrorists in Army uniforms and carrying automatic weapons were hiding inside the police station. They hijacked a car from a nearby highway and came to the Dinanagar bus stand around 5.30 am.

Punjab Police sources said the incident indicated that it was a Fidayeen attack.

Giving his first reaction on the terrorist attack, Home Minister Rajnath Singh says he spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to take stock of the situation.

Spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Shri Prakash Singh Badal who apprised me of the developing situation in Gurudaspur.

— Rajnath Singh (@BJPRajnathSingh) July 27, 2015

Also spoke to Home Secretary and NSA regarding the situation in Gurudaspur. Security forces have been rushed to the spot.

— Rajnath Singh (@BJPRajnathSingh) July 27, 2015

Reacting to the unfortunate incident Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted:

Will be very interested to see what emerges about the identity of the terrorists involved in the Gurdaspur attack this morning 1/2

— Omar Abdullah (@abdullah_omar) July 27, 2015

The timing of the attack, methodology & location are all eerily similar to attacks in the border belt of Jammu 2/2

I agree. This means we've certainly been hitting them very hard. This is Modi's first major terror incident. His response will be key. This could also be linked to Yakub Memon's hanging. His release may be a condition they place on letting some of the family members go. IMO, the NSG will hit them hard and fast to deny them any more leverage and before the press move in.

the rajasthan border is not 100% fenced I think...in some cases shifting sands and lack of manpower to watch over every inch permits even local smugglers to ply their ancient trade. the fence is also a single fence than the multi layer punjab one.

9.36 am: National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval has convened a meeting of the IB and R&AW chief to assess the terror attack in Punjab. There were no intelligence inputs specific to an attack in Gurdaspur. The only alerts that were sounded were that militants from Punjab are looking to stage an attack in a bid to revive militancy in the state. The ISI has been accused of sheltering Punjab militants and were looking to launch them in the state since the past five years
