U.S.-Pakistan bonhomie leaves India at a loss - Varghese K George & Kallol Bhattacharjee, The Hindu
India on Friday took exception to the American appreciation for Pakistan’s anti-terror operations and the American pledge to provide eight F-16 aircraft to the Pakistan Air Force.

At a weekly press conference, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup, said: “Our reservations about providing such platforms [F-16] to Pakistan are well known and all countries are aware of India’s position in such cases.” He said supply of such strategic platforms to Pakistan could not help South Asia, especially in view of reports that Pakistan had acquired tactical and miniaturised battlefield nuclear weapons.

The joint statement issued at the end of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Washington DC has been criticised in Indian policy circles as it entrusts Pakistan with maintaining “strategic stability” in South Asia. Experts have argued that the American decision-makers have misread Pakistani commitment to strategic stability in South Asia, especially since gifting the F-16 jets will further embolden Pakistan’s reckless nuclear establishment. “Pakistan is already the largest owner of nuclear weapons in South Asia. It is a known beneficiary of a clandestine nuclear programme. How can strategic stability in South Asia be maintained by gifting fighter jets to a country which has violated all norms of regional peace and stability,” asked Ajay Lele of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA).

That apart, India has also expressed reservations about the support President Barack Obama has extended to securing finances for the Diamer-Bhasha and Dasu dams in Gilgit Baltistan which India believes cannot be built because of it is in an area under “illegal occupation of Pakistan.” The joint statement repeatedly referred to Pakistan’s need to deal with issues arising out of water and energy issues and both sides have also joined hands for researching on water to help Pakistan.

The joint statement was dissected critically by India which finds the Obama-Sharif call for dialogue on Kashmir an irritant. That apart, India has been surprised by the description of “terrorism as of mutual concern” between India and Pakistan.

“The Pakistan Prime Minister has agreed to act on the Haqqani Network, which is in keeping with the promise made by the United States in the joint statement of January 25, 2015 in New Delhi,” the spokesperson said, hinting at the fact that the Obama-Sharif joint statement makes a contradictory point by conceding Pakistani role in promoting terrorism. Mr. Sharif who promised to act on the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) reaffirmed in the US that “Pakistan’s territory will not be used against any other country.”

India, however, maintains that the fighter aircraft promised to Pakistan will not immediately be handed over to the Pakistan Air Force and the U.S. Congress will examine the proposal carefully.
Absolutely in agreement with the assessment above. Chidanand Rajghatta & others erred in stating that the US had snubbed Pakistan.

The US should be accused of the following vis-a-vis Pakistan: thwarting democracy there by condoning and supporting military coups, not only turning a blind-eye to but also aiding and abetting the jihadi infrastructure, continuing to mostly condone the trans-border transgressions even when it had the greatest influence in shaping its behaviour, providing it moral & diplomatic support in world fora even when that country was completely in the wrong, helping it clandestinely acquire n-weapons not only by covertly assisting but also by bending its own laws and lying to its own Congress, and spinning a fraudulent theory that the 'fear paranoia' of Pakistan can be tackled only by showering it with weapons to match India's, latest being Afghan war wastage and now the F-16.

Multitude of concerns for Indian strategic interests - Suhasini Haider, The Hindu
India has reacted strongly to the U.S.-Pakistan joint statement, especially with reference to terrorism, nuclear cooperation and support for hydropower dams in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Here are the red flags for India:

Hydroelectric projects

India has opposed the construction of hydroelectric projects in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The External Affairs Ministry said, “We oppose any development projects in an area that belongs to India, but is under the illegal occupation of Pakistan.” In recent years, the 4,500-MW Diamer-Bhasha dam project had come to a standstill over funding. In 2013, the ADB, China and Russia asked Pakistan for a no-objection certificate from India . {India has to blame itself for this crisis as it has to for almost everything else also. Since the fraudulent 'accession' of GB to Pakistan, we have kept completely silent on staking our legitimate claim to that area. We concentrated everything on Kashmir valley and forgot about G&B., even as it acted as a gateway between two proliferating and collaborating enemies. In the meanwhile, we have given enough hints to everyone including the US that we would be happy to settle the border dispute on an 'as is' basis. That is another biggest folly. We must consistently and at every opportunity stake our claim to the entire former princely state of J&K. We cannot do it in fits and jerks.}

Talks with the Taliban

India has felt cut out of the Taliban peace process when New Delhi learnt that Pakistan would be allowed to host the talks in Murree. When the talks collapsed over the announcement of Mullah Omar’s death, it was felt Pakistan’s claim of being a “peacemaker” rather than a sponsor of Taliban-terror would end. However, the joint statement seems to indicate that the U.S. is prepared to let Pakistan host the talks again.

Resume talks

For over a decade, the U.S. has stayed away from openly pushing India towards talks with Pakistan.

The U.S.-Pakistan joint statement does not just put the importance of “sustained and resilient dialogue process” back in focus but also makes a new mention of “violence along the LoC”
which India squarely blames Pakistan for initiating. Of particular worry for India will be the joint statement’s reference to “mutual concerns of terrorism”, as it comes in the wake of Pakistan’s latest claim of India’s support to terrorism inside Pakistan.

Action on LeT?

While the joint statement does not note Mr. Obama’s acceptance of Pakistan’s claims of keeping its “international commitments and obligations” on the Lashkar-e-Taiba, including on Hafiz Saeed, it is significant that the U.S. has not raised the obvious violation of Security Council and FATF requirements earlier this year during the bail process of LeT operations commander Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi.{The lifting of ban on the Al Rashed Trust and JuD by the Supreme Court of Pakistan would be effectively used by 'The Establishment' to not to take any action on LeT and Hafeez Saeed. Period. The mistake that Modi's government is also making is to look up to the US for actions that we alone have to take. The first thing that GoI has to do now is to strongly condemn the US actions of siding with the Pakistani position of an 'uninterrupted & uninterruptible dialogue', formulating a more nuanced approach on terrorism which implicates India, supplying more arms to Pakistan, working out a 123 agreement etc. We should not allow the US to take us for granted}

Nuclear talks

Both the U.S. and Pakistan have denied a report in the Washington Post that they had planned a civil nuclear deal on the lines the U.S. and India signed in 2005 {which means that they are on the job and only a conclusion is not reached}. Even so the details in the Post have left lingering doubts over what the U.S. intends, including pushing for a possible NSG waiver for Pakistan in exchange for limiting its missile capability {the US does not want an ICBM capability to be acquired by Pakistan because it will then have one more enemy nation to contend with apart from Russia & China and there would also be a possibility of Pakistan falling into the hands of Islamist terrorists with disastrous consequences for the US. it doesn't mind more nuclear weapons by Pakistan because after all only Indian lives would be lost}. The report made the External Affairs Ministry counsel the U.S. on taking a closer look at Pakistan’s past on supplying nuclear weapons to North Korea and Iran.

India should just threaten that building these dams without India's approval and foreign funding will cause withdraw from IWT by India .

Islamabad’s promise to combat Lashkar marks a change in policy, says U.S. - Varghese K George, The Hindu
There has been a significant shift in Pakistan’s policy towards terror groups in the last year and it now recognised the threat posed by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), said a senior U.S. administration official on Thursday, hours after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised action against the outfit that is behind several terror strikes in India, including Mumbai 2008.

Mr. Sharif made this commitment in a joint statement with President Barack Obama after they met at the White House earlier in the day.

“This is very new,” the U.S. official said of the promise. “Understandably, they focussed on groups that targeted the Pakistan state initially. This is a demonstration of the recognition by Pakistan of the threat posed by it (LeT) against Pakistan and other countries ... We welcome Pakistan’s commitment.”

“The Prime Minister apprised the President of Pakistan’s resolve to take effective action,” the Obama-Sharif joint statement said.

While the specific reference to the LeT sought to address a lingering Indian concern in its relations with Pakistan, the joint statement took on board several issues that Pakistan harps on: it called for “sustained dialogue” between the two countries “aimed at resolving all outstanding territorial and other disputes, including Kashmir”; acknowledged the importance of “regional balance in South Asia”; expressed concern over violence along the Line of Control; and was effusive in its praise for Pakistan’s drive against terrorism in the region. The statement also termed terrorism a topic of “mutual concern” between the two countries.

Asked whether this formulation meant that the U.S. accepted Pakistan’s allegation that India was fomenting trouble in Balochistan and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the U.S. official said: “Pakistan has raised certain concerns. We have not reviewed the dossiers that they have given and I cannot comment on the content. But the best way to deal with this is, both countries start a dialogue on this.”

The official was categorical that the U.S. would involve itself in the India-Pakistan bilateral relations only if, and to the extent that, both countries jointly agree and request such an engagement.

Asked whether the call for a “sustained dialogue” indicated disapproval of the Indian position that “terror and talks cannot go together,” the official said he did not want to comment on conditions for talks, and reiterated “the U.S. hope that both countries would talk to each other.”

No nuke deal

“There is no such thing as a nuclear deal. I can tell you categorically that allegations of a 123 deal (agreement signed under Section 123 of the United States Atomic Energy Act of 1954) with Pakistan are completely false. Pakistan has expressed interest in civil nuclear cooperation and has called it a socio-economic necessity. But I can tell you categorically that we have not entered into negotiations. Nor are we seeking an exemption for Pakistan within the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in order to facilitate nuclear exports,” the official said, when asked whether Pakistan and the U.S. were negotiating a civil nuclear deal.

India had strongly reacted to news reports that the U.S. may be offering a nuclear deal to Pakistan.
Absolute nonsense. The US is trying to spin a new justification for supporting Pakistan. It is the same old story everytime. Either situations develop or are manufactured to extend support to Pakistan and maintain "regional balance" which the US has accepted (AFAIK) for the first time so openly. I am aware of earlier US formulations that one reason for Pakistan's unreasonable behaviour was its desire to build a 'security state' due to a paranoia with a much larger India irreconciled to the existence of Pakistan on the East and a fragile and inimical Afghanistan on the west which also has a friendlier relation with India. But, that is passe. Now, it is 'regional balance'. After the thaw in the India-US relationship in the 90s, and most especially after the Karil, Parliament & Mumbai attacks and the nuclear deal, the US wants us to believe that there is a long-term strategic relationship with us and the India-US relationship is qualitatively different from the US-Pakistan relationship and under that rubric, it has been steadily building-up the Pakistani state with direct consequences for India. I only hope that the powers that be do not fall for this deceit.

Pakistan is a failing state or a failed state. It has already been broken once and is on the verge of breaking again. It lives on handouts. No democracy.

India is the exact opposite of Pakistan on all fronts. Its a rising economy in the world. The biggest market opportunity right now. Its expected to be the 3rd most powerful country in the next 10-20 yrs. Its the largest democracy.

How can there be 'regional balance' between India and Pakistan? Anyone who talks of 'regional balance' in south asia wants to use Pakistan as a stick to beat India just as Taiwan used against China.

----
The only thing that Bhaarath lacks is MIC. If Bhaarath has a thriving MIC, these 'regional balance' games will become more costly.

Pakistan targets 9 BoPs along IB in Samba; civilian killed
http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/jammu- ... 49987.html
The Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire again with heavy firing and mortar shelling overnight that targeted nine Border Outposts (BoPs) of BSF and civilians areas in Samba district along IB, leaving a labourer injured.

After over a month-long lull, Pakistani troops yesterday resumed the ceasefire violations along the international border, killing one civilian and injuring three so far.

"Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing on BSF posts along IB in Samba sector from 2025 hours last night", a BSF officer said here today, adding BSF troops carried out effective retaliation.

The Rangers fired on nine BoPs of BSF along IB in areas between River Basantar and River Treva in Samba sector, he said, adding that they used 82, 82 and 51 mm mortar bombs at few places along IB.

BSF troops guarding the borderline retaliated resulting in exchanges which continued till 0220 hours today, he said, adding that there was no loss of life on Indian side but a civilian, who was working as a labourer in maintenance work near fence, was injured.

A civilian was killed and two others were injured last evening when Pakistani troops indulged in heavy firing along IB in Mangu Chak border outpost.
The ceasefire violations, which became a routine, had stopped after the Director General (DG)-level talks between BSF and Pakistan Rangers on September 12.

The Pakistani perfidy knows no bounds and the American acquiescence adds to it.

Pakistan says cannot kill Taliban while inviting them to peace talks - Reuters
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Friday he had told Afghan President Ashraf Ghani that Pakistan was prepared to help revive stalled Afghan peace talks but could not bring the Taliban to the negotiating table "and be asked to kill them at the same time."

Sharif, who was speaking at a Washington think tank a day after talks with US President Barack Obama, did not elaborate, but was apparently referring to US calls for Pakistan to crack down on Taliban and other militant sanctuaries within Pakistan.

A senior official of the US administration said the United States appreciated Pakistan's efforts to advance an Afghan-led reconciliation process, but "had repeatedly stressed that 'kill or talk' is not the choice."

"A successful political process requires continued pressure on those that would seek to use violence against civilians or the state to achieve their goals," the official said.

"We are encouraging Islamabad to take action against the Taliban, including the Haqqani Network, inside Pakistan as a means to support the peace talks."

The official added that Washington stressed in discussions with Pakistan that it expected continued cooperation against those planning attacks against US forces.

"We believe Pakistani pressure on the Taliban, including the Haqqani Network, is key to forcing the Taliban leadership to question the viability of its military campaign to achieve their political goals," the official said.

At the same time, the official said the United States welcomed Pakistan's commitment in a joint statement with the United States on Thursday to counter all militant groups, including the Haqqani network, a militant group operating inside Afghanistan that is considered close to Pakistani intelligence.

In his speech, Sharif said Pakistan had no reason to want violence in Afghanistan. {That requires a massive effort to present a straight face}

In a joint statement on Thursday, Obama and Sharif expressed their commitment to the Afghan peace process and called on Taliban leaders to enter direct talks with Kabul, which have stalled since inaugural discussions in Pakistan in July.

The talks broke down after the Afghan intelligence agency said Taliban leader Mullah Omar had been dead for two years.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported on August 5 in its 'Midyear Report on Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict', 2015, 4,921 civilian casualties (1,592 dead and 3,329 injured) in the first half of 2015, as compared to 4,894 (1,686 dead and 3,208 injured) during the corresponding period of 2014.

Expectedly, a series of attacks rocked Kabul in the early half of August. In a suicide bombing using a truck full of explosives outside a police academy in Kabul on August 7, 2015, over 50 died and 400 were injured. Another suicide bombing on August 10, 2015 in Kabul led to 5 dead. These prompted the Afghan President Abdul Ghani to accuse Pakistan of sending ‘messages of war’. The Afghan Loya Jirga did not pass the MoU between the NDS and the ISI. The Afghanistan-Pakistan relationship nosedived. The US National Security Adviser, Susan Rice arrived in Pakistan in early September, 2015 to bluntly tell the Pakistanis that attacks on Afghanistan came from Pakistan and Pakistan was not taking any action at all on the Haqqani Shura. She said that such attacks from Pakistan into Afghanistan were “absolutely unacceptable”.

Suddenly now, the US welcomes Pakistan's committment to counter all militant groups, including the Haqqani network?

Contempt petition filed against Pakistan PM for UN speech
http://www.newsx.com/world/12368-contem ... -un-speech
Saturday, October 24, 2015 - 10:40
Islamabad: A contempt petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for delivering his speech at the 70th United Nations General Assembly session in English, a media report said on Sunday.

Zahid Ghani, the petitioner, contends that the prime minister had flouted the September 8 Supreme Court verdict which directed the federal and provincial governments to use, without any delay, Urdu for official and other purposes, Dawn online reported.

He said the heads of other states, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushmita Swaraj, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Cuban President Raul Castro, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had addressed the same UN meeting in their national languages.

Prime Minister Sharif, the petition said, committed an offence and, therefore, should be prosecuted.

In its petition, Ghani argued that since prime minister Sharif knew about the September 8 judgment, the apex court should order his disqualification as member of the national assembly.

I would put it down to the approaching (just concluded) meeting with the US. They didn't want a messy border situation. The moment the meeting was over, the firing has started. IMO, the firing would have started in any case, whether Nawaz had a good or a bad meeting. By all accounts, it appears that Pakistan had a good meeting. There is going to be a long lull as winter approaches and Pakistan is probably reading the tea leaves wrongly as usual.

The vanilla visit
White House October 22, 2015 in Washington, DC. PHOTO : AFP
The visit to the US by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his cabinet — to say nothing of his extended family — has been decidedly muted. The visit was shortened and any opportunity to interact with people of Pakistan origin in America cancelled or severely limited. Fear of hecklers supporting political parties opposed to that of the prime minister appears the likely reason for this, though he has anyway never excelled at unscripted public speaking. There were photo-opportunities involving President Obama and Michelle Obama and the Sharif family, and one in which the cabinet members accompanying the prime minister looked like they were facing a firing squad. Despite some ill-informed speculation in the Pakistan media that some sort of civil nuclear deal/package was to be discussed/announced — it appears not to have been unless as an off-agenda item behind closed doors.
Ganja should again be taken to task,(contempt of court ) as the language of communication was decidedly not Urdu
A package worth $70 million to educate girls in Pakistan was announced at a White House event hosted by Michelle Obama and attended by the prime minister’s wife and daughter; and there was a flurry of anodyne statements all to the effect that Pakistan and the US were both on the same page and holding the same playbook. Events such as this are carefully designed to be drama-free zones. Whatever ructions there might have been were in private and will be leaked — or not — at a later
Wonder, if the $70 million package would have been approved, if NS had kept the female members of his family under wraps (burqas) as "recommended" by the Book
Vanilla though it was, the visit was not entirely without benefit. The anti-American rhetoric that was in vogue a year ago has lowered, and although there are some considerable differences between Pakistan and the US, they are less than they were in the past. The US is being quietly supportive — indeed cautiously grateful as in a presidential acknowledgement that Pakistan had successfully pre-empted terrorist plots against Americans and the American homeland — no small deposit in the favour bank. The prime minister and his team met with Vice-President Joe Biden over a working breakfast, and discussed terrorism and the security situation in the subcontinent more generally, with the prime minister reiterating his government’s commitment to hunt down terrorists no matter where — including those of the Islamic State and the Haqqani network :(( in this case, words speak louder than actions
.....Helpfully, President Obama said that Pakistani companies were eligible to bid for US Department of Defence procurements relative to operations in Afghanistan. We await developments.
Hope that the prices are not inflated ( like the Coalition Support Invoices) and the items delivered are per sample/ specifications (not the Basmati rice consignment recently delivered to Germany)
The prime minister will return home quietly satisfied. No clangers were dropped, no gaffes made and the entire exercise was, as planned, drama free. Pakistan and America are never going to be best friends, and there will always be an element of ‘frenemy’ in this least-comfortable of contrived marriages. But for now — a calm sea and, we hope, a prosperous voyage.

Balochistan can be freed, if US stop supporting Pakistan: Ahmer Musti Khan - ToI
Balochistan can be freed if US stops supporting Pakistan, feels Baloch activist Ahmer Musti Khan who earlier heckled Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif speech.

"I must assure you our Baloch people are so confident of victory that they believe that once US stops supporting Pakistan, we can force them out of Balochistan," Musti Khan said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

Sharif on Friday was heckled by Musti Khan while delivering his speech at the US Institute of Peace (USIP), a prominent independent think-tank.

Musti Khan demanded freedom of Balochistan provinces where Pakistani army has been engaged in torture and killings of Baloch people demanding freedom. The activist also called Sharif a 'friend of al-Qaida founder Osama Bin Laden.'

Musti Khan who earlier justified his agitation saying that he did it to expose Pakistan terror in Afghanistan and war crimes in Balochistan, hopes that his heckling of Sharif speech would make a difference in the days ahead.

To end the disruption, he was then removed from the hall by the private security of the USIP. The official Secret Service did interrogate him, but was not detained. "I told them that Pakistan receives US dollars but is an avowed enemy of the US. That was it. As much as I know, the US is sympathetic to the Baloch cause. Maybe because it understands Pakistan wants to work with China in Balochistan, which hurts vital interests of the US. Unfortunately some arms manufacturers in US have lot of clout at the Capitol Hill. That is the main problem.

When asked about the black out of the incident by the Pakistan media, the activist said that it clearly shows the control of the media by the intelligence services of that country.

'Pakistan media thinks if it does not report a reality the truth will die. Pakistan media is hands in gloves with the intelligence services of that country. As a journalist myself, I know quite well media houses cannot challenge the military narrative on Balochistan," he said

The activist also expects Modi administration to have a solid policy of support for Balochistan.

"As a rising power in the world India must openly support a free Balochistan not in the interests of the Baloch people but in the interests of 1.4 billion Indians," he added.

After The Glorification Of Raheel,Now The Glorification Of "Good Sharif's" Daughter Begins :!:
International Debut of ‘First Daughter’
ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday night, the television coverage in Pakistan was focused on what was being telecast from Washington DC as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif descended on the White House to meet President Barrack Obama.
However, all the Pak-American activity was not limited to the Oval Office. In another wing of the White House, the first daughter too had her first engagement on the international stage.
So was this a segregated event in the "another wing", keeping in line the cultural and/or religious sensitivities of the foreign guests
Standing besides First Lady Michelle Obama, as the Pakistani First Lady sat quietly in the audience, Maryam Nawaz Sharif gave her first speech during an international visit. Speaking on education for the girl child, she mentioned that she and her two daughters were enjoying their comfortable stay at the Blair House. It seemed to be a working trip for the entire family.
Plus, of course, a bit of shopping on the side,at the expense of the public exchequer?Though Maryam’s meeting with Michelle Obama was focused on education, the bigger news appears to lie in the fact that the Americans have used the trip and the education initiative to cultivate Maryam, who is being seen as the heir apparent of Nawaz Sharif. /quote]
Hope, any "cultivation" by the Yankees, did not include any chance of "physical proximity"
What else could have led to Michelle Obama’s surprise choice to work with Maryam on girls’ education (the first daughter till the White House invitation had not shown any interest in or done any substantial work on education)? That the Americans had a bigger plan in mind was also evident from the fact that the messenger who delivered the invitation to Maryam was Dr Peter Lavoy, who is President Obama’s top aide on South Asia. Her interaction with Dr Lavoy, who is the principal interlocutor on the nuclear parleys raised many eyebrows in Pakistan./quote]Of course, there were no chances that the "invitation" was delivered in a "one-on-one" meeting, and a male member of the family(mehram) must have been present, in keeping with the requirements of Sharia law.
Someone who has been aware of the recent events explained that it was a routine strategy to engage people close to the leader as this could help achieve what was otherwise difficult to do through official channels.
What! Is someone insinuating that she MS was used as a "honey trap" to get some more favors from Uncle for the Paki nation
“At a time when the first lady Kulsoom Nawaz is keeping a low profile, the administration would have searched for someone empowered around the prime minister and eyes would have eventually turned to her [Maryam],” he said, adding that the administration officials also found it easier to communicate through her.
Degree from Londonistan, better accent, " not under wraps" as opposed to the Mrs.
The US embassy did not comment on the issue.
Her appearance on the scene – post 2013 – has led to great speculation that she is being groomed by her father to take over the party; a position that earlier was seen to belong to Shahbaz Sharif’s son, Hamza Sharif. Nawaz Sharif’s two sons are reported to not be interested in politics. The trip to the US will simply add to the speculation in this regard.
Analyst Ayesha Siddiqa feels that Maryam is being groomed by Mr Sharif much like Zulfikar Bhutto trained Benazir Bhutto.
So the family dynasty will carry on ? But what about the Deep State; if and (it is a BIG IF ) when, by hook or by crook, she comes into power, will she able to implement her agenda or will go the BB way.
But there is also speculation that Sharif himself also wants an informal line of communication with the US – something that Maryam could open and use successfully. This is something that the Bhutto family had always enjoyed and continues to enjoy – the recent meeting of Aseefa Bhutto with Hilary Clinton is a case in point.
India == ; Bhutto == ; cant these Paki politicians at least for once, come up with some original ideas
After all, the relationship with the US is not limited to foreign policy and security. Historically, Washington has played a role in domestic power struggles, as revealed by the Wikileaks.
But then, what choices does a rentier state have

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan issues warning to India
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan warned that if India turn down a proposed series against Pakistan in December-January, there could be a rebellion against the ‘Big Three’.
PCB chairman said that Indian board signed the MoU and they vowed to play series with Pakistan.
“We signed the new constitution on the understanding that India would play us six times in eight years. This was the inducement to us to drop our opposition and for the ICC to have a unanimous agreement,” Shahryar Khan said.
He also revealed that some other countries are also unhappy with ‘Big three’ so it can be challenge.
He is on visit of Dubai where he met with Pakistan’s legendary batsman Younis Khan.

The Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire again with heavy firing and mortar shelling overnight that targeted nine Border Outposts (BoPs) of BSF and civilians areas in Samba district along IB, leaving a labourer injured.
This time we should hit the Pakistani rangers so hard that we take out an entire platoon or more. Make them think twice about following their Pak Army bosses orders.

‘Do not expect much from Pak. on LeT promise’ - Varghese K George, The Hindu
South Asia watchers in the U.S capital acknowledge that Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to take action against the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is technically a new one, but warn that it may be too early to celebrate.

They point out that Pakistan has made commitments on similar issues earlier too but what matters is the extent of its willingness and ability to make good on its commitment. {The commitment was not made with any seriousness at all. In fact, Nawaz has no authority to make such a statement as LeT is apart of Pakistani Army. Pakistani Army dictator did make a public promise in c. 2002 not to allow its territory to be used for terror attacks on neighbours. Everyone knows what happened. if Nawaz had privately promised Obama, then it is unadulterated taqiya which is acceptable in the cause of Islam according to Zia-ul-Haq and Pres. Reagan. There are reports that the PA officers met Hafeez Saeed at Muridke just before Nawaz left for the US. Even a single-cell amoeba can guess exactly what would have been discussed.} “So I would not uncork the champagne just yet,” said Ashley Tellis
, Senior Associate at the South Asia Program in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“We’ve seen this movie before,” said Michael Kugelman, Senior Program Associate for South and Southeast Asia at the Woodrow Wilson Center. “There are always expressions of intent, but at the end of the day not much changes.”

Mr. Tellis found it interesting “that Sharif has acknowledged for the first time in a joint statement Pakistan’s obligations to target LeT.”

“That is, in my view, an advance. But the real question, always, is whether Pakistan will make good on its commitments. There have been a series of Pakistani commitments on counterterrorism during the last fifteen-odd years without meaningful implementation,” he added.

But Mr. Kugelman said he wouldn’t “read too much into Sharif's LeT comments.”

“This is because,” he clarified, “Pakistan will not change its policy toward LeT so long as India remains a foe. Also, let’s be very clear: if anyone is to make a new commitment to targeting LeT, that commitment would need to come from General Sharif, not Prime Minister Sharif.”

Curious reference

The joint statement’s reference on “the importance of regional balance and stability in South Asia,” coming as it does in the wake of Pakistan’s complaint that U.S.-India proximity was tilting the strategic balance in the region is curious.

“It is an odd formulation,” said Mr. Tellis. “But I don’t think U.S. policy towards India has changed. New Delhi matters more to Washington because of larger strategic interests that transcend the Indian subcontinent. The Obama administration cannot, and I expect will not, pursue a strategic ‘balance’ intended to treat India and Pakistan equally in geopolitical terms.” “I think the reference here was essentially a diplomatic nicety meant to convey a shared desire for a subcontinent that does not descend into conflict and warfare,” said Mr. Kugelman.

While the U.S. has categorically stated it does not intend to interfere in India-Pakistan relations unless asked by both countries, its anxiety about the stalled bilateral dialogue is apparent in the joint statement that called for “sustained dialogue.”

Asked whether this indicates a U.S. disapproval of India’s position — that of no talks before terror stops — Mr. Kugelman said: “Washington does worry about the paralysing dynamic of India-Pakistan diplomacy — the fact that each side sets conditions for dialogue that the other doesn’t accept. The U.S. certainly wants the two countries to move beyond this obstacle, though the joint statement was careful not to say how this should be done.”
The veteran Pakistani journalist, the late Khalid Hasan, has recalled how Gen. Musharraf in his very first official visit to the US in February, 2002 openly accepted that the LeT and Jama’at-ud-Dawa (JuD) were only doing jihad outside Pakistan

Even when Gen. Musharraf had to ban these terrorist organizations under intense pressure after the Indian Parliament Attack on December 13, 2001, he took care that these organizations were not banned in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) or in Federally Administered Tribal Agencies (FATA), both places where they had setup training centres and which they used as launch pads across India and Afghanistan. Promptly, LeT morphed into JuD a few days before the ban was officially announced on January 15, 2002, cleaned its bank accounts, and moved its headquarters to PoK. The support from the highest office in Pakistan to ‘non-state actors’ was quite discernible.

Even when Hafeez Saeed had been declared a terrorist by the UN Security Council as a result of this attack, even as he was being implicated by India as the mastermind and the Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice to arrest him, top notch Pakistani politicians like ex-President Rafiq Tarar, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain (Chief of PML-Q), Mushahid Hussain (PML-Q Secretary)and Sheikh Rashid (ex-federal minister and a self-proclaimed jihadi) condoled with him for a bereavement in his family by visiting his house. All cases brought against him in the Lahore High Court, the Supreme Court and the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC)were dismissed one after the other either for lack of evidence or for being bad in law. The Interior Minister of Pakistan, Rehman Malik, has repeatedly talked of a ‘lack of evidence’ against Hafeez Saeed as though only other nations have to give that.

Pakistan decided to close down the Al-Rasheed and Al-Akhtar trusts only in Feb, 2007 even though the UN Security Council declared them to have links with terrorist organizations as early as 2001. The Pakistani interior minister later explained to the Pakistani population rather apologetically that even though the Pakistani government fought the case of the two trusts in the UN, they had to close them now due to the UN resolution as otherwise the nation will attract economic sanction. Now, even that fig-leaf has been blown away as the Pakistani Supreme Court has lifted the ban on Al Akhtar Trust.

Who makes foreign policy in Pakistan? - Op Ed, DT
Little wonder then that the Director General (DG) of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) visited the US before our PM landed there. Not only this, a retired general was tasked to monitor PM Sharif to avoid a repetition of the Ufa summit. Finally, General Sharif is expected to visit the US sooner to see whether his PM has made any strategic blunder.

I see no justification whatsoever to grant visa’s to citizens of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to come to India and make propaganda on behalf of the Islamic Republic’s Deep State to have India vacate the Siachen Glacier of which the Islamic Republic holds not a square nanometre.

This Lahore-based Mass Group Foundation should be forthwith deported after being briefed that the Islamic Republic is nowhere “on Siachen Glacier”. Further our High Commission in the Islamic Republic should be reminded to exercise greater caution in granting visa’s to prevent Non-State Propagandist arm of the Islamic Republic’s Deep State doing propaganda in India.

The BJP which controls the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) should provide an explanation why they invited the Lahore-based Mass Group Foundation to conduct the play. Hindustan Times reports that the MCG “organised the event”.

Well done Shiv Sena for protesting and bringing this to light:

‘Shiv Sena’ men disrupt Pak play in Gurgaon, shout slogans on stage

Meanwhile India needs to maintain vigilance to trump sly attempts by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to get India to unilaterally withdraw from the Siachen Glacier which is going to increase because of the high cost the Islamic Republic is facing in challenging India’s position on the Glacier. See my earlier post of Sept 18:
arun wrote:The Uniformed Jihadi’s of the Punjabi Dominated Military of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s futile attempt to challenge and occupy Indian territory on the Siachen Glacier is resulting in their running a high casualty rate. The Islamic Republics attempt has in the period between 2003-10 resulted in 213 deaths and does not count the 140 Uniformed Jihadi’s who died in a fatal avalanche that hit a uniformed Jihadi camp in April 2012.
Despite a ceasefire that has seen no targeted firing since a 2003 agreement, the Pakistan Army has been losing an average of 30 soldiers a year on Siachen. The deaths are associated with the perils of deployment at high altitude - medical complications, avalanches, bad weather and more. With a total of 213 deaths recorded at Siachen between 2003-10, the glacier has been taking its toll. The average of 30 deaths a year does not include the 140 soldiers that Pakistan lost in a fatal avalanche that hit a military camp in April 2012.

On the other hand, Indian casualties on glacier have progressively decreased over the years and are currently in single digits. Official data released in parliament shows that Indian soldiers have died due to climatic conditions at an average of 10 a year. In recent years this number has almost come down to single digits, with 5 sold ..

India's strange preoccupation with Pakistan

I hope the current Govt calls up the German Ambassador and
- asks him and his country to stick to fixing their emissions standards at home rather than worry about issues in India.
- tells him that organisations like PEGIDA have no place in the modern world.
- tells his that Germany's continued inability to rein in violent RW extremism, coupled with its inability to check RW elements from entering police and military orgs some 70 years after the war is a serious concern.
- tells him that with instances of attacks against Indian students on the rise, Germany would do well to sticking their resources to fixing law and order situation at home.

These felllows - you give them an inch and they will try to take a mediator's role uninvited.. Wast it German Ambassador who organized some concert in Kashmir and wanted to come off shining like the white Jesus between Rabin and Arafat.
Morons still think they have figured everything out.
The GoI must act now and basically ask them to STFU and p1ss off.

Can someone here put up a tasteful, "I am an Indian. I am all for peace but I cannot express my opinion because I was killed by a Pakistan-sponsored terrorist. #BoycottPakistan"

Or something like that.

"I am an Indian. I would have loved to join the peace effort, but a Pakistani mortar shell took my life. #BoycottPakistan".
