Pakistan losing the America pillar

Bharat Karnad
Pakistan, it was said, was defined by the three As — Allah, Army, and America! It is in serious danger of losing America as pillar to lean on, and without which the dyad of Allah and the Army will render that country even more unstable than it already is. This trend of the US retracting from its blind support of Pakistan may be seen particularly in the views aired by the ranking majority Republican Party and minority Democratic Party in recent Congressional Hearings on a possible nuclear deal with Pakistan along the lines of the one with India.

Members of the sub-committee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, in the Hearings held on Dec 8, 2015, were one with the four experts — former Pak ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani and currently at Hudson Institute, Daniel Markey of SAIS, Henry Sokolski of the Nonproliferation Education Center, and George Perkovich of Carnegie called in to testify, in stating plainly that a civilian nuclear deal to insert Pakistan in “the international mainstream” that the Obama Administration is considering (prompted principally by Michael Krepon and his colleagues at the Henry L. Stimson Center) has not a spitball’s chance in hell!

The Congressmen were scathing. Pakistan was called “the only schizophrenic nuclear state” in the world, one that was both confused and confusing the US about its intentions and policies, and described as a “difficult partner” in America’s counter-terrorism and nonproliferation missions. The Chairman of the subcommittee, Poe, went so far as to say that in the Eighties he was called “Pakistan’s man in the Congress” but he thinks he made a mistake then because he said going to Pakistan and interacting with Pak Army officers, who because they “looked like British officers, we believed were not radical!” and that he now thinks Pakistan which was “once a friend is now an enemy”! All of them voiced their anger at Pakistan channeling N-weapons technology to Iran, North Korea and Gaddafi’s Libya, and in the future, possibly to Saudi Arabia, and making a fool of America.

Haqqani was the most outspoken. Time and again he reminded the Congressmen that the US govt’s institutional and instinctive habit of bypassing the civilian authority and dealing directly with the army since 1947 has strengthened the military’s hold on the Pakistani state. And that Congressional conditions on aid to Pakistan were routinely ignored by the US President of the day. Moreover, he was straight forward in saying that all military aid sent by the US, the latest being the F-16s Obama has promised, end up being used solely against India. He was joined by the other three experts in saying NO when they were asked by the sub-committee if the US can anymore “trust” Islamabad not to undermine US interests and discard terrorism as aeapon. He also reminded the American legislators that Islamabad sought a civilian N-deal for the sake of “parity” of treatment and not because it’d buy any power reactors from the US, considering China was supplying all the reactors needed to generate electricity and w/o the onerous conditions that’d attend on a deal with the US. Tellingly, Haqqani likened Pakistan’s desire to be seen as the equal of India to Belgium wanting to be the equal of France and Germany!

But it was also an occasion for Sokolski and Perkovich — both of whom opposed the N-deal with India, to say that if ever there was a civilian N-deal with Pakistan that it will have to meet certain criteria — liking curbing its N-weapons growth and the rate of missile production, the sort of thing they rued was not insisted upon with regard to India.

The Pak embassy must have telegraphed the trending situation, because it had an immediate impact some hours later in the warmth with which Sushma Swaraj, the minister for external affairs, was received by PM Nawaz Sharif, and in the reasonableness the Pakistan Establishment displayed in quickly agreeing to discuss anti-India terrorist outfits, especially the LeT, operating fairly freely in that country, as part of the “comprehensive” talks. The opening to India is important to both the Sharifs — the politician Nawaz and the army chief, Raheel, to counter the impression gaining ground in Washington of an unreconstructed Islamabad bent on making trouble for everyone and, therefore, needing firm handling.

It can be done., with diffie-helman key exchange and then encryption using aes. However email is a store-forward mechanism., so have a complete end-to-end encryption which is typically 'on-session' for a 'off-session' use is difficult.

Check out Proton mail. Here they own the channel and hence can vouch for some degree of 'privacy' per email.

The article above is well worth the read. Particularly given the recent cryptography brouhaha., it is important to know what NSA does in US and what US wants to be done in other countries ostensibly to protect US.

A little OT perhaps

RM dress and style is typical of proud Indian type in India.
many politiicans when they visit abroad particularly to khanate and its puppies try to be more unkilly than sdre.

should have immense confidence and proud of his own culture to do it.
I love these characters 8)
(I say it after noticing my own sdres in khanate and in uksitan over years).

:rotfl: I think it is autospell correct. Either way it is a tad hard to believe Ms. Clinton after the way she played Benghazi. The Clintons are in the thrall of big banks - Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan etc. They had a $28 million income in 2015 (or is it 2014?) most of which came from speaking engagements. Ms. Clinton got $225K for a talk at Goldman Sachs and one at another bank. Mr. Clinton charged $25K less (was it due to he being damaged goods?).

Manohar Parrikar's maiden visit gives boost to India-US tech trade
The United States is inching closer to sharing critical high-end technology with India after it announced key policy changes during Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's maiden visit to the country that could see the transfer of jet engine and gas turbine knowhow.

Parrikar, who has concluded a high-powered visit to the US that included the largest delegation of private sector players from the Indian defence industry, met his counterpart secretary Ash Carter in Pentagon, followed by an .................

VT - Globe and Mail is red-faced issuing apology after the mischief done by it's low life reporter Paul Koring.

The actual tweet which the reporter, with nothing better to do, twisted was:
Tell Donald Trump: Hate is not an American value.
It wasn't a typo, and NO it was NOT AUTOSPELL CORRECT.. (Hard to imagine photoshopping of an image/slogan can be done by auto spell). May be her team should have known better in selecting a slogan/logo/poster but calling it as Hillary tweet was dishonest. Perhaps it was done with the knowledge that that some will fall for it .. and start shouting silly shout of "Benghazi"..

I think this is excellent and should be high priority, and taken seriously -- not only for US and India but for all good people..
Highest item for US India relationship..

Would do anything to bring Mumbai attackers to justice: US
Would do anything to bring Mumbai attackers to justice: US
Washington: The US on Saturday said it wants to see the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attack brought to justice and will do anything to support India in this regard.

"...We want to see the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack brought to justice and obviously continue to want to do anything we can to support Indian authorities in that task," State Department spokesman John Kirby said yesterday when asked about David Headley turning approver after being pardoned by a Mumbai court.

Headley is currently serving 35-year prison sentence in the US for his role in the Mumbai terror attack.

When told that Headley may provide a great deal of information about the attack, Kirby said, "I don't have anything specific and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on an ongoing court case like that anyway."

"Again, we share an interest in seeing the Mumbai attackers being brought to justice ? a terrible, dastardly terrorist attack," he said.

Kirby said India is a very close friend and partner.

"I think it's self-evident in recent years that both our countries {this means US and India} have fallen victim to terrorist attacks and continue to need to be on ? to be vigilant about terrorism perpetrated against our citizens, and so it makes perfect sense that we would look for ways to cooperate more closely and to improve the flow of information between our two countries," he said.

Asked if the State Department was playing any role in intelligence and information sharing on terrorists as mentioned by Indian defence minister Manohar Parikkar after his meeting with US Defence Secretary Ash Carter, he said, "I can't speak for the Defence Department. As for the State Department, we have ? we maintain good, strong relations with our counterparts in the Indian Government.

"I won't speak about intelligence matters, but I can tell you that that relationship remains strong, remains vibrant, and the Secretary?s interest is very clear in making sure that the relationship continues to strengthen and grow going forward across a wide range of issues, not just security issues," he added.

My opinion may not be that important VTji. Back when I was a student, and energy was measured in ergs, I measured that about 200 ergs of energy was spent in speaking one syllable. I counted 10567 syllable in one lecture of about 45 minutes. This amounted to about 2x10^6 ergs (= 0.2 Joules = 0.05 calories) per lecture. We were paying about 0.37 Rs per KWH for energy then. So that came out to be about 0.002 naya paisa per YEAR as reasonable salary of a lecturer. Right then I knew what I would be when I grow up, because I knew that Lecturers are HIGHLY overpaid, and speaking arrangements are good to make money :).

This may be OT, so I would stop here.

this is very bad news. They have totally given up on kaveri & varients for near future. They can't even shoehorn in into MK2 once it is adapted to F414 without exhaustive redesign.

As I had mentioned earlier (based on assumption of course), the tie up with GE woudl produce an engine for India - India funds it and owns the IP for teh engine, but perhaps not all the technologies.

Not clear on what India can do with the techs that are transferred. Can they be applied to the Kaveri? That is perhaps a secondary concern at this point, but, India just does not have the time to prod on to produce a better Kaveri. And, neither the Tejas nor the AMCA can afford to wait.

Let us see how the funding is allocated in the future, that should provide a clue as to what is happening with the Kaveri.

I like this development. At least the AMCA will not be late.

I just want to insert a data point to put the engine development in perspective. Recently Honda showed off a small (17 seater IIRC) coroprate jet - they developed the air frame and the engine. According to the TV show I have seen, entry into Aerospace was a long time dream of Mr. Honda. Since they did not want to use an existing engine , they developed theor own engine. It took 30 years! but is 0.5% more efficient than any existing engine in that class. They have entered into a joint development agreement with GE just a few weeks (a week?) back. Imagine if someone can develop an engine that is 10x (5% more efficient) for a commercial 787 class jet. Here we are talking about a fighter jet which is probably in the same ballpark as a corporate jet but more stringent performance requirements than a corp. jet. While the design trade-offs are different I posit that the effort in the producing an end product are not that dissimilar. How long we had been at Kaveri?

I am not too sure, the road to a world class engine needs to wind through the US. ????? Perhaps UK too?

NRao.. no, the tech transfer again not designs blueprints, but mostly jigs and production engineering (#MakeInIndia). how to build and assemble than how research and develop. these can come under skill development initiatives, and we need larger skill base for precision engineering manufacturing. This is my best guess, and you know how the massans work.

Kaveri R&D must be home grown, and clean without any foreign hands. However, developed skills from these initiatives can help in the production engineering sphere. None to stop that.

Under DTTI initiative, only a few projects were taken by shri om babaji.
During Obama's visit, both countries had identified four "pathfinder projects" as well as decided to explore development of aircraft carrier technologies and jet engines.

The pathfinder products are the Raven mini unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), "roll-on, roll-off" mission modules for C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, mobile electric hybrid power sources, and chemical-biological warfare protection suite for soldiers.

Read more at:
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/art ... aign=cppst
I think we need the big data, and help where we are really struggling. But, that means their leverage is let off on the FUD & DoS attack. If these agreements mean that there will closer relationship in R&D, then there would be more Jackal&Hyde laws put in like how they do with Israel.

NRao, there may be something.. but still strategic. I'd not move this discussion to mil forum yet.
gas turbine engine technology transfer to India
http://in.reuters.com/article/usa-india ... 2720151211

"As a result of this policy update, the Secretary is confident that the United States will be able to expand cooperation in production and design of jet-engine components," the joint statement said.
and as a result, we have to see what are the demands expected.. like asking our forces to join war against terrorism etc.

Someone kindly please inform this guy that it is going to be the biggest blunder of the century. Why do you need engines and planes ?

TO FIGHT US PROXIES AND USA.

Even congress kept it's distance from aircarft engine tech from USA, it beats the entire point of having an airforce. They will ration out engines, maybe tech and even parts as per our compliance with their 'war with our terror' bs which basically means they will destroy one-by-one all middle income countries of asia and then everybody has to depend upon trade with USA to be profitable. You Manohar Parikkar & Narendra Modi and signing on to this game plan fully conscious of it's implications ??

Under DTTI India had asked for transferring some technologies. I do not know what the techs were requested, but I do know that SD came out and said something to the extent - do not expect it. And, for a good reason, the techs would have made India a competitor - at least that is what the SD said.

Even now, as I said earlier, this news is from the DD and I think it still has to go through the SD. I assume the chances are better, but I am not convinced that anyone is out-of-the-woods, yet. Hopeful.

On Kaveri, yes, it needs to move forward. But I very much doubt it could have without some help. IF they could they would have - that is the point. I do not think there is anyone out there in India that want Kaveri to fold up. But they have no choice - that is my observation, right or wrong.

MP said today that he expects India to be an aerospace hub in the next 5-10 years. So, this transfer - and I assume there is more than just engine techs - has got to be something transformational. What it/they is/are I do not know - yet. But there is something there.

All the French Aviation gas turbines are derivatives of GE LM 2500.
Please read the development of Sud Aviation history pages

And we have this turbine technology for about 20 years...

......

The General Electric LM2500 is an industrial and marine gas turbine produced by GE Aviation. The LM2500 is a derivative of the General Electric CF6 aircraft engine.

The LM2500 is available in 3 different versions:

The LM2500 delivers 33,600 shaft horsepower (shp) (25,060 kW) with a thermal efficiency of 37 percent at ISO conditions. When coupled with an electric generator, it delivers 24 MW of electricity at 60 Hz with a thermal efficiency of 36 percent at ISO conditions.[1]
The improved, 3rd generation, LM2500+ version of the turbine delivers 40,500 shp (30,200 kW) with a thermal efficiency of 39 percent at ISO conditions. When coupled with an electric generator, it delivers 29 MW of electricity at 60 Hz with a thermal efficiency of 38 percent at ISO conditions.[2][3]

QUESTION: Is there any organized effort to ask ***EVERYONE*** running for POTUS, how they would deal with Pakistan?

Would they sell Pakistan weapons?

Would they demand Pakistan prosecute terrorists?

Would they demand Pakistan cease cross-border infiltration of terrorists?

Would they demand Pakistan DESTROY ALL TRANS-NATIONAL TERRORIST ENTERPRISES?

Or....... Would they seek to admit Pakistan to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)?

On the STFUP thread, the question was asked, what is US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher's current views on Khalistan (fifteen years ago he was a supporter of Khalistan).

It is difficult to find out a particular Congress critter's current views, however, the US Congressional Record can be searched at thomas.gov.

The last legislative action is quite old:
H.Con.Res.37 — 105th Congress (1997-1998)
Expressing the sense of Congress that the Sikh Nation should be allowed to exercise the right of national self-determination in their homeland, Punjab, Khalistan.
Sponsor: Rep. Condit, Gary A. [D-CA-18]
The last committee report is from 2004, Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness
``Decades of Terror: Exploring Human Rights Abuses in Kashmir and the Disputed Territories,'' May 12, 2004; Serial No. 108-212

a. Summary.--This hearing was held to examine the ongoing Kashmir land dispute between India and Pakistan, specifically the resulting egregious human rights violations, including
summary executions, rape, and routine beatings.

b. Witnesses.--Michael Kozak, Principal Duputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at DOS; Don Camp of the Bureau of South Asian Affairs at DOS; T.
Kumar of Amnesty International; Bob Giuda of the Americans for Resolution of Kashmir; Dr. Ghulam-Nabi Fai of the Kashmiri American Council; Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh of the Council of
Khalistan; Attiya Inayatullah
; and Selig Harrison of the Center for International Policy.
The last times Khalistan was mentioned in the Congressional Record (speeches on the floor of the Congress, or extension of remarks) were:

1. COMMEMORATING THE LIFE OF SARDAR GANGA SINGH DHILLON, November 14, 2014
(HON. GERALD E. CONNOLLY) Sardar Dhillon was a proponent of Khalistan.

We then have to go back into 2007.

2. INDIAN INTELLIGENCE PLANS TO ASSASSINATE SIKH LEADERS, December 13, 2007
(HON. EDOLPHUS TOWNS) Places on record Gurmit Singh Aulakh's claim that India was planning the assassination of Khalistani leaders.

There is a whole bunch of other stuff from Edolphus Towns in 2007 (don't worry, he retired in 2013).

A good list of questions there. Primary and inter-party debates (after the nomination process) have a mechanism to receive email questions. Is it possible to send a large number of emails BRF members and other interested parties with each of those questions in separate emails? If the number of emails is large enough the chances of one of the questions getting picked would go up.
