ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — All cellphone coverage was blocked by the government for three hours one recent afternoon in the Pakistani capital, and it did not take people long to discover why: Maulana Abdul Aziz, the radical preacher of the Red Mosque, was sermonizing again.
Barred from giving sermons in the mosque, the scene of an army siege on extremists that killed as many as 75 people in 2007, Mr. Aziz had announced that he would relay his latest Friday sermon by cellphone, calling aides at the mosque who would rebroadcast it over the mosque’s loudspeakers.
But instead of arresting the jihadist preacher, as many moderate Pakistanis would like, the authorities simply turned off the city’s cell networks last Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the traditional time for Friday Prayer, according to senior Pakistani officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the news media.

Mr. Aziz’s relative untouchability is a measure of how enduring the power of militant Islamist ideology has remained in Pakistan. ( meanwhile innocent Pashtuns and Balochis are slaughtered every day in the name of "fighting terrorism") Even as the Pakistani military has driven some jihadist groups out of business or into hiding over the past year, other technically banned jihadist or sectarian groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat are still thriving, with little apparent effort by the government or military to curb them.

The ascendance of such groups and of radical mosques and madrasas was well underway during the years that Tashfeen Malik, half of the husband-wife pair of attackers in California, returned to Pakistan for her university education in Punjab Province.
Many Pakistani officials have been quick to suggest that Ms. Malik must have found her extremist beliefs while she was growing up in Saudi Arabia. But the reality in Pakistan is that hard-line Islamist views in line with some of the most conservative Saudi teachings are more mainstream than ever.

That fact came into view most prominently with the case of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist and member of Al Qaeda who was convicted in 2010 of trying to kill American personnel in Afghanistan. She is serving an 86-year prison sentence in the United States.

A recent example popped up here at the Jamia Hafsa school, a girls’ madrasa attached to Mr. Aziz’s Red Mosque. About 15 of the older students recently posted a video of themselves in full burqas in front of the flag of the Islamic State, praising the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and asking him to come help them avenge their followers and others who have been killed — especially Osama bin Laden.
“May God annihilate America and those who support it,” their spokeswoman said. “We pray for you every night here in the land of Pakistan.”
Mr. Aziz, sitting this week in the Martyr Osama Bin Laden Library at the school, said the girls who took part in the video were scolded for their actions. “We have nothing to do with this video: Some students in an individual capacity did this, but we don’t endorse it,” Mr. Aziz said. “We told them not to do this.”
That is the case with the once-powerful Pakistani Taliban, as even a senior official of the insurgents, meeting privately with a Western journalist last week, conceded.
“In Pakistan we can hardly operate anymore,” he said, saying the organization has mostly moved to Afghanistan and has forged closer ties with the Afghan Taliban. “In Afghanistan, we have no problem going anywhere.”
He attributed the Pakistani Taliban’s declining fortunes to the Taliban’s bloody attack on a military school in Peshawar last December, in which 145 students were slaughtered. “That was a flawed strategy from our leadership; it was disastrous for us,” he said.
The public outcry was a tremendous lift to the military and its anti-militant operations — which many had earlier complained were halfhearted at best — against the Pakistani Taliban and some of their allies.

The prevalence of that ideology has become a factor even in the news and entertainment industry. Take,oo o for instance, the relatively mainstream commentator and television host Zaid Hamid, with almost 800,000 “likes” on his official Facebook page and a warm relationship with Pakistan’s de facto military rulers, who has long espoused views regarded elsewhere as extremist or at least on the fringe.
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he insists, were engineered by the C.I.A., which also helped the Indian intelligence service introduce suicide bombing to Pakistan, in Mr. Hamid’s view. The killing of Bin Laden in Pakistan by a United States Navy SEAL team had to have been faked, because the Qaeda leader was not even in Pakistan.
Then there is this recent post: “I told you years ago that ISIS is Jewish Israel secret service gangs pretending to be Muslim jihadis.” As evidence, Mr. Hamid cited a Daily Mail article about Israeli medics treating Islamist battle casualties in Syria.

“The state needs a comprehensive counterterrorism plan,” said Muhammad Amir Rana, the director of the Pak Institute for Peace Studies. “This whole menace of terrorism cannot be dealt with purely as a security threat. The ideological threat still needs to be addressed.”

Dhaka may throw out Pakistani diplomat - Haroon Habib, The Hindu

Bangladesh is likely to take action against a Pakistani diplomat for reportedly promoting militancy in the country.

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said steps would be taken against Farina Arshad if allegations levelled against her were proved.

“We do not want to do anything in a rush unless we could be sure about that. If we get sure about it [Farina’s militancy involvement] we will take every necessary action against her through the Foreign Ministry,” the Minister told reporters.

Outside interference

On Tuesday , the Minister had accused Pakistan of “still conspiring” against Bangladesh. Ms. Arshad is a second secretary in the High Commission and her involvement came to the light during the interrogation of members of the organisation Jam’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh

The JMB’s activities, according to Mr. Kamal, are under control. “But, many local and international quarters are helping them.”

Instead of saying it publicly Bangladesh should have thrown her out. Now Pakistan may outwit them by declaring one of BD's diplomat as persona non grata. Some years back a similar thing happened when India was contemplating to expel a Pakistani diplomat, Pakistan preempted that move by declaring one of Indian diplomats as PNG. You can never trust pakis.

There is no outwitting here. It is standard procedure to do a tit for tat. US and USSR used to do it all the time. Throwing out a diplomat after giving the reason is the best thing to do. Pakis may copy and do tit for tat but that will be recognized as sour grapes.

Indo-Pak foreign secretary meet: Venue not yet decided, no role for Hurriyat

NEW DELHI: India today said the date and venue for next month's meeting between Indo-Pak Foreign Secretaries are yet to be finalised and asserted that all bilateral issues are to be addressed mutually between the two countries.

"Two Foreign Secretaries are in touch with each other but the date and venue are yet to be finalised.

"All the bilateral issues are to be addressed mutually between India and Pakistan and this was recently reiterated in a joint statement issued after the External Affairs Minister's meeting with the Pakistan Prime Minister and his Foreign Affairs Advisor in Islamabad," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

He was asked if Pakistani delegation again met Hurriyat separatists or the Kashmiri separatist leaders tried to meet them here.

In August, the NSA-level talks were called off after New Delhi had made it clear that the then Pakistan National Security Advisor Sartaz Aziz would not be allowed to meet Kashmiri separatist leaders here.

Imagine yourself advocating for the absolution of the masterminds behind the Peshawar Army public school attack. Imagine that those killers have been given the highest medals of honor and are being celebrated as heroes— brave soldiers who killed for the sake of their country. Now imagine that it is not a single person, but a whole nation standing together to justify such a brutal act.
I can’t, and I don’t want to imagine a world like that for either myself or for anyone else. Unfortunately, the truth is that I am part of such a world, community and nation that stands proudly and defends firmly war crimes that were committed against their own fellow citizens. Do you remember the “fall of Dhaka“, on December 16 1971?

...then why is it that we have still been silent for decades about our Bengali brothers and sisters demanding justice?(good question)

Pakistan’s education system is a smokescreen designed to alter the course of history for the upcoming generation. It fails to mention a single word about the atrocities and war crimes committed by the country’s armed forces in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1971. Our curriculum cites Indian-backed “Mukti Bahini” as the culprits. The Al-Badr, Al Shams and Razakar militia are referred to as “armed volunteers” of Jamat-e-Islami supporting West Pakistan’s armed forces.
This is the root of the problem ( garbled history/propaganda/ideology about Pakistan, Hindus, Islam etc in their own text books taught in Paki schools and colleges; as the late Ardeshir Cowasjee noted unless this rectified-which it has not been - the younger generation will also grow up and behave no different !)
The other side of the story, in which these “volunteers” allegedly acted as the Pakistan army’s death squad to kill off the left-wing intellectual elite is conveniently absent from our textbooks. The same books also cite “lack of resources” as one of the main reasons for the loss of Pakistan’s eastern province, and do not highlight the fact that it was in fact the economic and cultural repression of Bengalis by the Punjabi ruling elite that led to the separation.

One example of such cultural repression was the ban imposed in 1967 on playing the works of the great Bengali poet, Rabindranath Tagore on Radio Pakistan. Tagore was the first non-European to win Nobel peace prize in Literature in 1913.
These perceptions are evident not only in our text books but in our political and social opinions as well. Pakistanis, for instance, have expressed great concern and have deemed the trial of former Al-Badr leader Mujahid “deeply flawed”. Time and again, Pakistanis have opposed judgments against the Jamat-e-Islami leaders for war crimes committed and proven.

And the same leaders are in charge of the "Ideology of Pakistan"- whatever that means !

Pakistan’s school and college textbooks are full of hate speech and convenient lies. The official narrative whitewashes war crimes and endorses jihad as a noble act in religious history. The National Commission of Justice and Peace has discovered blatant religious biases in textbooks used in English, Urdu, Pakistan studies and social studies classes.

K.K. Aziz’s Murder of History: A critique on History textbooks used in Pakistan is an insightful book that raises pertinent questions about the education system and challenges the conspiracy theories being taught. It was published in 1985, and is a solid source of information for those interested in examining the divide between historical evidence the information presented in our textbooks. In one of the chapters, Aziz questions the false account of 1971 war, according to which the Pakistani armed forces are celebrated as setting new records for bravery, and Indian forces are portrayed as the defeated. As a child, I’d always found it confusing and wondered what really happened.

In addition to Aziz’s book, there are war museums full of historical evidence and international newspapers, books and journals with pictures and videos that prove what the Pakistani military did in 1971 in Bangladesh was not brave, but heinous.

44 years have elapsed since these crimes were committed, since the Pakistani army raped Bangladeshi women and murdered their country’s children and youth. In 2002, one of Pakistan’s military rulers, Pervez Musharraf, expressed regret for the harm done, and was the first to offer a subtle apology.
Earlier this month, however, Pakistan suddenly retracted that stance, and categorically denied that any war crimes were committed in 1971. The statement came after one of the Jamat-e-Islami leaders was executed in Bangladesh for those crimes in November.

My thoughts are with the families who lost their children last year in Peshawar, but I also can't stop thinking about those Bangladeshi families who suffered at the hands of Pakistani army. Those families know their enemies and want justice for their loved ones, and their pain must also resurface every year, just as it does, and will continue to, for the families of APS victims.

Muslim family 'denied boarding' on flight to US from Gatwick

Mohammed Zahid Mahmood, from Walthamstow, eight members of his family and two other children checked in on Tuesday for the Norwegian Airlines flight to Los Angeles. (Paki victim ? )
They had obtained travel authorisation under the Visa Waiver programme.
The family say they were told an official in the US had objected.(fallout from the recent California episode?)
At the boarding gate Mr Mahmood said they were told they could not travel but no reason was given.
The family say their visas were approved more than a month ago and that they were travelling to see Mr Mahmood's brother in Los Angeles.

'"We checked in, there were no problems," Mr Mahmood told the BBC. "Just before the final check we were singled out.

"Border control came and said 'Can we have your passports?'. He asked us to distinguish between my brother's children and my children.

"Then he came back and said, 'I'm sorry you can't board this flight. We received a call from Washington DC that we can't allow this family to board the flight'."

Mr Mahmood said he had educated his children "to live in this country peacefully" and had been invited to speak at local schools about Islamophobia.

He said he had once been detained for eight days at Tel Aviv airport.

"No-one is taking the blame. We are just going round in circles. It's about £8,000-£9,000 we've spent on tickets."

A spokesperson for Norwegian Airlines said: "We can confirm that a group of passengers were denied the right to board a flight from London Gatwick to Los Angeles yesterday at the request of US Homeland security. Norwegian fully complies with requests from the border controls of each country we serve."

The US Embassy could not be reached for comment and Gatwick Airport said they had no information about the incident.

Two suspected of links to Paris attacks arrested in Austria refugee center (one of them is from Pakistani origin) (reuters.com)

Two people have been arrested at a refugee center in the Austrian city of Salzburg on suspicion of being connected to last month's Paris attacks, the Salzburg prosecutors' office said on Wednesday.
The two are men who are thought to have provided help to members of the group that carried out the attacks on Nov. 13 in which 130 people were killed, two Austrian newspapers reported.

National tabloid Kronen Zeitung said they were French, of Algerian and Pakistani origin, and entered Europe through Greece on fake Syrian passports with members of the group that carried out the Paris attacks.

Pakistani burglar gang arrested in Sharjah
DAWN.COM — PUBLISHED ABOUT 7 HOURS AGO

The Sharjah Police on Friday arrested a five-member Pakistani gang for alleged burglaries and theft in commercial outlets in Sharjah, read a report published on Khaleej Times.

The group comprising five Pakistanis allegedly carried out thefts in a number of shops and outlets in various areas in the Gulf state, local police said.

The police claimed that the gang members resisted the arrest while one of them had a knife, but police managed to arrest him.

A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) official said they received a number of complaints at various police stations that "some thieves had broken into their shops" and stole cash, goods and various valuable items.

The police managed to locate their apartment and identified the suspects through surveillance cameras before arresting them, as part of their ongoing investigation in response to the complaints.

All suspects have been referred to public prosecution.

LAHORE (Staff Report) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan Friday opposed Pakistan’s joining the Saudi Arabia-led counter-terrorism alliance.
He said this while talking to media at Lahore airport. Khan said that joining the 34-nation alliance against terrorism may spark sectarianism in Pakistan.
“Government should conduct debate on this issue in the parliament before approval,” he said.

Don't speak against India, Nawaz Sharif speak with Forked Tongue

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stopped his ministers from giving anti-India statements so that the peace process is not hit, an official said.

A close aide to Sharif said on Friday that the ministers and senior officials had been asked not
to issue any statement that could damage the peace process.

"There will be statements only that encourage the dialogue process rather than digging out the past. The PM has asked the close aides and cabinet members to promote peace," The Nation quoted an official as saying.

He said Sharif was optimistic about better ties with India, which would benefit the whole region.

Sharif was annoyed by statements from India that New Delhi only wanted to discuss Pakistan occupied Kashmir in talks, but understands this is not Inidan government's policy, the official added.

Sharif, the official said, wanted to give top priority to Kashmir, terrorism and trade when the two sides discuss peace.

Another official said Sharif and the military leadership were on the same page to make peace with India. This Official is lying though his bare teeth

"There is no difference of opinion and both agree that there should be no compromise on the stated position on key issues," he added.

An interaction between Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Paris and subsequent meeting of the National Security Advisors in Bangkok set the pace for improvement in the bilateral ties.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also visited Pakistan on December 8 to attend the Heart of Asia conference.

She met Sharif and his advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz on the sidelines of the conference.

It is expected that Sharif and Modi will meet again in Switzerland in January. The two leaders will be together on January 20 to attend the 46th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos-Klosters.

India's outgoing High Commissioner to Pakistan TCA Raghavan on Thursday said the relations between the two countries were heading towards betterment.

Analysts said it was a positive development that Pakistan and India agreed to resume comprehensive dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues.

Britain rejecting Pakistani visa applicants in droves

ISLAMABAD:
The United Kingdom is pursuing an unannounced policy (Bartania practicing Taqqiya? ) of turning down visa applications of Pakistanis, becoming one of the top ‘no-go’ countries for the country’s nationals, a study and background interviews conducted by the Online news agency have revealed.

Although the British High Commission in Islamabad and two deputy high commissions in Karachi and Lahore are fully functional, the visa applications of Pakistanis are processed at the Abu Dhabi High Commission, mainly by Indian staff.(must be RAA agents!) Even a large number of Pakistanis who have visited the UK twice or thrice in the recent past have been denied visas for unclear reasons.

The British High Commission in Islamabad officially refused to provide the number of applications received and rejected, and how much amount was accumulated against them this year. An official of the high commission said the figure could run into thousands.

But just the other day, the UK High Commissioner was "praising" Paki foreign investment policy

Mohammad Atif, who had applied for the UK visa from Lahore, said his three consecutive applications were rejected on different grounds. “Finally, when I cleared all the objections, the visa officer rejected my application, because he thought I would stay behind there despite the fact I had lived in the UK for two and a half months before”.

There was this story of this British journalist who traveled out of London on his girlfriend's passport. Mind you there was some high alert and Pm was in some "Cobra " meeting.
