good point nawabs...if u put PNR+mobile u get access for 1 hour...if only PNR only 15 min... maybe they can put a time limit/ download limit or even a filter which allows access to only some selected sites..email sites, railways site, a few travel sites ( these sites can pay railways for allowing their site on rail wifi), facebook, news sites. think its eminently possible.

In future, an OTP sent by providing last X digits of Aadhaar+PNR combination could be one method. Relatively secure.

Yup streaming sites should be blocked. Useless increase in daily footfall will only cause inconvenience to valid passengers. Yesterday wifi was launched at the railway station in my hometown. Pretty sure that people would be coming to station to stream movies, download heavy files and other rubbish after buying platform ticket.

Kashi wrote:Bengaluru-Mumbai train route will soon get shorter
The train journey between Bengaluru and Mumbai is all set to come down by four-five hours in the near future with the state government deciding to expedite work on the new Tumakuru-Davanagere railway line.

The new rail route, which will be laid through Sira and Chitradurga towns, will put the brakes on the current circuitous route that the Bengaluru-Mumbai trains take. At present, trains from Bengaluru reach Tumakuru and meander through interior places such as Tiptur, Arsikere, Birur and Chikkajajur, and reach Davanagere before proceeding towards Hubli and Mumbai. The circuitous route is 326 km (from Bengaluru to Davanagere) and is time-consuming.

But the new rail-route would run on a straight line from Tumakuru to Davanagere via Sira, Hiriyur and Chitradurga. The distance on this route (from Bengaluru to Davanagere) will be only 265 km.

Though the project was mooted six years ago and politicians from the state, including the then minister of state for railways KH Muniyappa, had promised to finish work early, nothing concrete happened on the ground. However, the state cabinet gave the project another lease of life on Wednesday by fast-tracking it.

Speaking to reporters here, law minister TB Jayachandra (in pic) said 2,035 acres of land will be required for the Rs 1,801 crore project and a green signal has been given for the land acquisition process.Funding for the new rail-route will be sourced from the royalty collected from the mining sector of the Ballari region . Jayachandra said: "The Supreme Court has clearly stated that the money collected from iron-ore exports should be used for development activities in the region. We have around Rs 4,000 - 5,000 crore from the mining sector. We have decided to use these funds as the new rail-route will be passing through the three districts where mining activity happens." Moreover, the new route will also reduce the traffic on the current route, which also accommodate trains plying towards Shivamogga.

Jayachandra is keen on speeding up work as the new rail route passes through his home constituency of Sira.
Once this new line is completed and the Pune-Miraj-Londa line is doubled, Bangalore-Mumbai travel should become much quicker.
This would be good , This route takes around 22-23 hours from Mumbai to reach Bangalore City Junction , reduction in 5 hours would make it like 18 Hours ......would be good if they can reduce that to 15 or 12 hours by increasing speed and reducing stops.

Quite interesting development for LNG powered Freight Train http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/78943/

Gas turbine GT1h-002 and 2TE116-1428 locomotive with a freight train weighing 9,000 tons

The first serial Russian locomotive that runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG) - gas turbine main innovation GT1h-002 - made a trip to the experimental section of Surgut - Voinovka Sverdlovsk railway. Gas turbine locomotive covered the distance of 700 km with a load of 9000 Tons without refueling. This is reported in the service of Public Relations and Mass Media LLC "Gazprom Transgas Ekaterinburg" (CTUs). After completing the route in his tank left about 2.2 out of 20 tons of fuel. This confirmed the possibility of exploiting gas engine technology in the northern direction of the Sverdlovsk Railway electrified organization without intermediate gas stations ", - reported the press service of the company.

Re fuel consumption. I remember being told by a IR engineer years ago when the ALCOs were the fleet mainstay that the WDM3 fuel consumption was about 3.5-3.8 liters per kilometer when hauling express trains and about 4.6-4.8 liters per kilometer when hauling a goods train. He said that when the fuel consumption reached 5 liters per kilometer hauling goods trains, they used to send it for an overhaul. The WDM3 has a fuel tank of 5000 liters and can be refuelled comfortably after about 1000 kms depending on refuelling stations on the IR lines, when hauling express trains.

As far as cost goes here is official statement from their railways , gives details on many aspect of this new engine , The overall life cycle cost of LNG powered engine over its life cycle is 20 % lower than traditional engine

Gas turbine locomotive pulls heavyweight train with hydrocarbons on Surgut - Voinovka stretch

RU EN

The gas turbine locomotive GT1h-002 is the first Russian serial locomotive to run on natural gas.

It is now undergoing a test programme at Sverdlovsk Railways in real operating conditions. On 23 May 2016, it successfully pulled a train weighing 9,000 tons along the Surgut - Voinovka stretch of almost 700 km. The experimental run took place under the leadership of Valentin Gapanovich, Senior Vice President at Russian Railways.

The main objective of the experimental run was to test the technical, economic, technological and environmental characteristics of the gas turbine locomotive on the northern section of the Sverdlovsk main line, which is not electrified, and where the GT1h-002 is planned to enter service in the future.

Under development at the moment is the transportation process which will see wagons weighing 9,000 tons pulled by the GT1h-002 locomotive move hydrocarbons from the north of the Tyumen region to Voinovka station, and from there without transshipment onto the Trans-Siberian Main Line, where the powerful Granite three-section electric train engine will take over.

The GT1h-002's main advantage compared to other types of gas-turbine locomotives is its ability to produce significant power despite its relatively small size and weight. Even when hauling its full design load, the GT1h can reach speeds of up to 100 kph.

The gas turbine locomotive runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fuel that meets the highest environmental standards. The GT1h-002's exhaust emissions conform to the European environmental standard Euro-5, while its level of external noise complies with the existing sanitary norms of the Russian Federation.

Summing up the results of the test run, Valentin Gapanovich noted that the trial confirmed the possibility of using gas engine locomotives with trains weighing 9,000 tons and over on the Surgut - Voinovka stretch without the need for refuelling at intermediate stations.

To establish regular traffic, however, it will be necessary to estabilsh the appropriate infrastructure, including facilities for the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and special refuelling areas for the rolling stock. So far, the only such complex is near Yekaterinburg.

The use of LNG as a cheap and environmentally friendly fuel for locomotives is one of the promising areas for implementing the Energy Strategy of Russian Railways. LNG and its associated technology can reduce the cost of purchasing expensive diesel fuel and therefore cut freight transportation costs.

Valentin Gapanovich stressed that gas turbine locomotives are the most effective type of traction rolling stock. Its cost is comparable to traditional engines, but its total estimated cost over its complete life cycle is 20% lower.

The GT1h has been designed and developed entirely in Russia and is planned to go into production at the Ludinsk Diesel Locomotive Plant, which is part of the holding Sinara Transport Machines. All the GT1h's major components and assemblies, including the hybrid power train, are also manufactured in Russia.

If IR builds HSR railway stations which look like airports, they had better give them to private companies to run. Otherwise these places will get effed up very soon like sarkari orgs have messed up Kolkata and Chennai airports!

What a seriously messed up airport Kolkata is !!! All that beautiful infrastructure is getting systemically destroyed with neglect

well Chennai atleast has got the basic architecture right in separated arrival and departure levels .... BIAL is still stuck with the box.

we badly need a central multi storey car park here with belts leading to departure and arrival doors. the buses can have their own adda on the ground and taxis can be parked in a far off lot and fed into the queue as usual.

they need to dream big.

The BIAL basic design was a really bad screwup by the Zurich Airport consortium who won the bid. It reflects their mindset back then that BIAL would remain some small regional airport and therefore didn't need anything more than what was effectively a rectangular box. HYD, built at the same time by GMR, did things much better. There was a lot of recriminations on SSC India forums back then when it was clear that an entity like GMR had done a much better job that imported phoren design consortium in the case of BIAL.

wasn't there some story of the Zurich Airport consortium, basically using a rejected design to economize on costs and investment??

BIAL - Bombay International Airport? - It is worst as far as comfort is concerned. I had to travel from it few times and quite confusing to go where you have to go and lot of walking and no sign boards, no public announcements ( so-called silent airport with soft music rubbish).

Yaa,
Bombay airport is another story. The sarkar couldn't acquire land from the slum next door and so one appendage of the aiport's design is not going to be completed.

The difference between what was planned and what was ultimately built !

^^^ Jet Airways and AirIndia have shifted their domestic operations from the old (Santacruz) airport to MIAL (which came up at Sahar). Indigo and Spice are resisting moving to MIAL on cost grounds. Indigo is even eyeing the old airport as their own exclusive base/terminal. The MIAL management wont accommodate them beyond a certain point and period.Ultimately everyone will have to move to the new airport and there are plans for the old airport to be converted into a Air-Cargo complex.

but there is a dedicated road parallel to NH8 from T3 to T1 that goes under the runway and has only airport traffic. it was empty when I visited in april. there is a line of transit and business hotels on that road like marriott courtyard.

http://www.railnews.co.in/demand-to-sto ... h-melghat/

Nagpur: Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Railways, and Prakash Javadekar , minister of state for environment and forests, have been urged to drop the plan to upgrade Akola-Khandwa railway line passing through Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR).

The Indian Railways had finalized upgradation of 174km Khandwa-Akola railway meter gauge section on South Central Railway (SCR). Of this, Amalakhurd-Akot (77.5km) passes through hilly parts of MTR and its estimated cost is Rs.1,454 Crore.

Former National Board of Wildlife member Kishore Rithe has pointed out that if the railways follow the same alignment and gradient, trains will not run beyond 60 kmph, and also won’t connect villages from Akola, Amravati and Buldhana districts. “Considering both the aspects, people in this region and MTR administration had demanded diversion of this line outside forest area to maximize benefits,” Rithe says.

As per present meter gauge alignment, 25km of the line between Amalakhurd and Akot passes through Wan sanctuary. As additional forest land was also required to take up gauge conversion on this stretch, railways team in 2014 had explored an alternate route outside the sanctuary area. This route bypassing the sanctuary had been planned with the help of Regional Remote Sensing Centre, Nagpur. It would entail abandoning 51km of railway line in the existing alignment and construction of new line over about 80km.

Even as clearance from Railway Board was awaited on the proposed diverted alignment between Amalakhurd to Akot, pressure from local MP Sanjay Dhotre led the railways to decide on using the existing alignment and gradient to upgrade this line.

“We feel that this is neither in the interest of the people from three districts nor forest and wildlife. Existing movement of trains has killed many wild animals and reptiles, specially during monsoon and winter season,” he pointed out.

As this is a remote area, there are several incidents this train route being used to transport forest produce and wildlife derivatives illegally from the forests of MTR. This includes illegal trade of medicinal plants and wildlife derivatives like tiger, leopard skins, bones etc. Besides, regular forest fires happen in summer due to the railway traffic through 17.3km of core area.

Rail Unions demand scrapping of Rs 40000 Crore Loco contracts with GE & Alstom

http://www.railnews.co.in/rail-unions-d ... ge-alstom/

The charter of demands
Indian Railways’ workers unions have expanded the scope of their protest by including a key reform initiative of the rail ministry in their agenda for agitation – the award of Rs 40,000 crore contracts for new locomotive factories to foreign firms GE and Alstom.
...
The unions are demanding improving the minimum wage of Rs 18,000 per month for workers as computed by the seventh pay commission to around Rs 26,000 and rejecting all the ‘retrograde’ recommendations of the panel.
...
Another major demand is to scrap the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and restoring the Old Pension Scheme for railway workers in view of the harsh working conditions.
...
The other demands include scrapping the report of the Bibek Debroy committee on mobilisation of resources for railways submitted last year and withdrawing the notification that allowed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to flow into the rail sector.

Bullet train to reduce Delhi-Kolkata travel time to five hours: Feasibility study
NEW DELHI: Travelling time between DELHI and Kolkata will be cut down to as less as five hours by operating a bullet train on the route, a firm commissioned by the Railways has suggested.

The feasibility study is being undertaken for the 1,513 km long Delhi-Kolkata high speed corridor along with two other routes of the Diamond Quadrilateral project, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

The corridor is estimated to cost about Rs 84,000 crore.

Howrah-Delhi is the route I have traveled the most on, and the following is my take on this proposal:

If Semi-HSR can complete the journey in 8 hours, and costs significantly less than the 84,000 crore that the bullet train will cost, then semi-HSR is good enough for this route.

U-Turn: State govt agrees to bullet train terminus at BKC
The State government is likely to approve the Railway Board’s plan to build the bullet train terminus on the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) land alongside the proposed International Financial Service Center (IFSC) being built by the State.

A senior government official said the design submitted by the Railway recently, was in accordance with the government’s demands. He added that the design made both projects seem complementary. “The terminus no longer hampers the IFSC’s prospects. We will, however, demand that the Centre construct the IFSC building as compensation. We have written to them to extend the route of the train to Nashik,” he added.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which owns the plot, had earlier refused to give it away, saying the built up area of the plot could fetch crores. Fadnavis stated that the State had offered the Railway alternative plots nearby. MMRDA and Urban Development Department officials convened this to the Railways during their May 23 meeting.

The insistence of the Central government and the prime minister’s office has led to the compromise.

Google, RailTel drive WiFi Connectivity for 19 Railway Stations across India
Google and RailTel have established Wi-Fi connectivity for 19 Railway stations across India, touching more than 1.5 million Indians
...
“Last week we rolled out the network at four of India’s largest stations – Sealdah, Lucknow Jn, Lucknow and Gorakhpur Jn and we are delighted to share that 1.5 million Indians are now enjoying the high-speed broadband experience across 19 stations,” the statement added.
...
While we’re only at approximately 20% of the roll out schedule for this year, the response has been phenomenal,” the statement added.

“We saw 100,000 users connect to the network within a week of launch at Mumbai Central and as we started rolling out the network at more stations, we saw exponential jump in the consumption of the network. Users in tier 2 cities latched onto the network with more enthusiasm and we saw much higher consumption of data in tier 2 cities, where access to high speed broadband is more challenging. Our data reveals that usage in Bhubaneshwar overtook Mumbai central within a day of the launch, and we’re seeing similar usage patterns emerge in tier 2 cities like Patna, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam. Per capita consumption of data in tier 2 cities far exceeds the consumption we are seeing in tier 1 cities.

It’s heartening to note that even though users are in transit catching their trains and moving to their destinations, the average consumption per user on the network is 15 times the data they would consume on a 3G pack in a day, which today is the most dominant means of access to the Internet in the country. While the primary usage is focussed around infotainment, we are seeing a lot of users in tier 2 cities use the network to look up and apply for jobs online. Bhubaneswar and Pune see lots of students come to the stations to look for up information related to educational courses, exam results , downloading softwares and upgrading their phone apps,” Google added this in the statement.

Railways to allow Card payments at Ticket Counters
Passengers would soon be able to purchase tickets from railway reservation centres through the passenger reservation system (PRS) using electronic payments – credit cards, debit cards and pre-paid cards approved by the Reserve Bank of India as well as via point-of-sale machines by banks.

The implementation of the new plan, that will also bring the unreserved ticketing system (UTS) under the electronic net, is expected to reduce transaction time, increase ease of payment, and do away with the long queues at ticket counters.

The plan will also cover freight transactions carried out by the Indian Railways. We are also looking at the possibility of engaging with digital wallets companies such as Paytm and others. We have three months to submit our recommendations,” said a senior official from the rail ministry.

Railway Passengers can also cancel PRS Ticket on IRCTC portal now!

We have written to them to extend the route of the train to Nashik,” he added.
Is he joking or something? Nashik is at 700 meter above sea level. Hauling a train all the way up and again coming down is no joke. Any connectivity to Nashik would be through kasara ghat, that also happens to be one of the terminus for local trains on Central line. Beyond this point I think trains require double engine or push-pull configuration I think.

HSR will avoid steep gradients, since it'll no longer be an HSR. Gradients will be bypassed by tunnelling through/under the mountains.

Is it necessary to tunnel ? A quick search says Kasara Ghat line has 1/37 gradient . The max gradient on TGV lines is 35/1000, which is 30% higher, unless my math is awry. Of course, this ignores all kind of other things like turn radii etc, but purely in terms of gradient, it does not appear unsurmountable without tunneling.

I find this bit of information in the release, worrying. Google will snoop on all the details about demography, content of interest and other things. I hope IR has done a proper agreement with Google, taking into account the privacy aspects.

HSR trains are of necessity very light. so they will be able to sprint up gradients where normal 25 coach rajdhanis will need additional engines to cope and slow down. same rules apply to runs or cycles - the ones who sprint up are the lean, efficient ones not carrying any fat.

Since the system will be based on Shinkansen, I would assume that the set up for tackling the grades would be similar. Amongst the Shinkansen routes, Nagano/Hokuriku Shinkansen has a maximum gradient of 30‰ (parts per mille/in each thousand) and for all lines it's stipulated that the minimum curve radius be 4,000m. Though the Tokaido route had an allowable minimum curve radius of 2500m.

I am no expert so I don't know if with these constraints in place, can an HSR route on this section be achieved without tunnelling.
