^^ The image Shiv posted looks like that of an external fuel tank. The one IR has posted isn't fuel tank, I had see nit previously but didn't post thinking its not relevant for stealth discussion. Google search for Su30 MKK2 tells its recce pod, M-400 or some kind of side looking radar, with lots of instrumentation housed under that fairing. External fuel tank wouldn't need fairing. Also external fuel tanks seating between those two engine pods are around since the development stages of Su-27/Mig29 IIRC. I am sure it screws up with manoeuvrability big time but still useful in extending range.

Indranil, I should have known Prasun wouldn't even do the PS and ripped off the PS from Paralay's website as his own, brilliant. So in a nutshell, Paralay created a speculative image of a possible config based on their own speculation and Prasun was busy passing it off as the Super Flanker upgrade on his blog. LOL. At any rate, I wonder if IAF will look at any enhanced configs for their Flanker-H's. The Su-35 can reportedly be equipped with external fuel tanks too. The standard radius is 1500km for a Flanker at medium alt's carrying some 4 missiles one way, firing them and returning. I'd guess a heavily loaded radius would be around half of that so every bit of fuel would help, especially against PRC.

The Su-34 hs 3 wet pylons, 1 ventral and 2 inboard. The external fuel tank in Hakim's picture is called the PTB-300 which can carry 3000 ltr of fuel. There is a smaller version called the PTB-200. Considering that our Su-30s are our strategic bombers and that inflight refuelers will be limited for another decade to come, making the same 3 harpoints on our Su-30s wet may be a good suggestion. It will add range and flexibility.

HAL may put in Rs 2,000 crore for Sukhoi 30 spares hub
he Russian origin aircraft has been facing technical difficulties with several fighter grounded for prolonged periods as the current process of ordering spare parts is time consuming and inefficient. This has resulted in a situation in which at any given point of time, only 50-55 percent of the fleet is ready for operations. The aim is to increase this to at least 75 percent. Sources have told ET that HAL is looking to invest over Rs 2,000 crore to create a spares hub that will stor .Officials told ET that at times, the bureaucratic processes would lead to even a yearlong waiting time between the Air Force raising a requirement and the spare part getting manufactured.

This point has come up before - I think in relation to a discussion about helicopter rotor blades.

HAL says that the IAF should contract in advance for spares for imported components so that they can be imported and stocked in advance. This raises costs and the IAF has apparently been reluctant to do that. So when the spare does become urgent, tenders for import have to be placed with a foreign OEM.

One of the solutions mooted was to have a multi-year service and maintenance contract like firangi companies do. Much more expensive but the manufacturer then stocks consumables in advance. The US in particular has developed this into a fine art wherein the hangar/workshop where a US exported item is serviced has a direct link up with the manufacturer so they know exactly what is needed, where and when. The end user (IAF) gets a reliably working machine

This picture is from the MAKS 2003. And yes, this is a recce pod, most probably a M400.

Russia's Sukhoi Super 30: The Outlook for India’s Ultra-Advanced Flanker Upgrade
http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-bu ... ?page=show
Konstantin Makienko
August 31, 2016

When the Su-30MKI specifications were being drawn up, the Indian military came up with an extremely well-balanced set of requirements for the new plane. Those requirements were at the cutting edge of – but not beyond – the Russian defense industry’s capability at the time, and could be implemented at a reasonable cost and within reasonable deadlines. It is to be hoped that a similarly well-balanced solution will be found for the Sukhoi Super 30 program.

Konstantin Makienko is deputy director of the Centre for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) in Moscow
now 2 Su-30 == 1 Su-35. they are suggesting to consider 1.5 super 30 to match it.

I would put it this way:
- Get the darn AESA with similar or better range with passive mode tracking after actively scanning and locking on LPI
- Get Shaktivel (vetrivel's bro) in action [just a naam]
- Get the super composite skins tested that would be essentially on PAKFA

reduced RCS along Brahmos and AESA, then 1 Su30 MKI would be > 3 x Su35

Good write up on Su-30 in various exercise http://nvo.ng.ru/armament/2016-09-02/1_su30.html[quote]

Su-30 starts and wins

A series of international scientists have demonstrated the superiority of Russian fighters

The Indian press has once again stepped up to discuss the modernization of fighter fleet of Su-30MKI, form the basis of the national Air Force. It is reported on the possibility of signing contracts for the conversion of the Su-30MKI in the "Super Dry" until the end of this year. It called even the cost of future works on modernization - to $ 7-8 billion.

Image

Experience shows that contracts of this magnitude are prepared in India for a long time and are announced repeatedly. Tender MMRCA - a vivid example.

What is the face of the "Super Dry" will choose the Indian Air Force is still unclear, but it is possible that the upgrade will be gradual. The open architecture of the avionics of the Su-30MKI allows you to integrate new systems and weapons without such drastic alterations of the aircraft, which had to be carried out in the framework of the MiG-29UPG program.

The fundamental alteration of aircraft, paradoxically, is to reduce the period of significant combat capability of the aircraft categories due to the inability of the pilots to quickly master the sharply increased capacity machines.

Major-General of Medical Service, Vladimir Ponomarenko, the former head of the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, said: "We are well-known experience in building and operating the F-22 US fighter jets. In particular, today one pilot F-22 is able to use its performance characteristics not more than 40-60% full. " The trend of loss of skills in the transition from one generation to another exists objectively. "In the transition from aircraft 2nd generation 3rd-formed before flying skills and abilities, and protection of life means retain their usefulness by 60-70%, and the transition from the 3rd generation to 4th will require the formation of new forms of preparation operation in all areas more than 50% "- Ponomarenko notes.

Simultaneously with the debate about the "big modernization" program implemented in India equip the Su-30MKI heavy supersonic cruise missile "BrahMos". Already in the next year in line units will have the Su-30MKI, "BrahMos" armed missiles.

"The Long Arm" Indian Air Force is needed for several reasons. Strengthening fleets Delhi rivals, creating a chain of naval bases in China in the Indian Ocean, the commissioning of the Chinese aircraft carrier, build a Pakistani missile capabilities - all of this requires the creation of a powerful long-range precision-guided weapons. The complex of Su-30MKI plus "BrahMos" solves this problem. Neither Pakistan nor China is no air defense systems that can resist such a complex.

The missile "BrahMos" with high probability would be the impetus for the development of the Su-30MKI / MKI (A) / MCM. Two other pulse - this is referred to Indian avionics modernization program as well as a conclusion on the broad market Su-30cm.

Currently, the aircraft comes videoconferencing and naval aviation of the Russian Navy, as well as Kazakhstan - Russian ally in the CSTO. Intention to buy Su-30cm expressed by another member of this organization - Belarus.

The export version of the fighter - the Su-30SME - has a good chance in the CIS, as the ratio of performance and value superior to all their real competitors in the post-Soviet space. Close customer Sioux 30SME could be Iran, it is of interest to persevere to this machine.

In a sense, the Su-30 became the standard heavy multirole fighter, playing in its market segment roughly the same role as the F-16 lightweight fighters in the niche. Recall that the first F-16 flew in 1974. Serial deliveries began in 1979. Since 2002, the production is as new orders. It was assumed that the production line is the F-16 will be closed in 2009, but today this term is postponed until at least the end of 2017.

As reported in 2015, well-known journalist Bill Svitmen of Aviation Week, the US Air Force are considering ordering a new batch of F-16s on the background of delays in the F-35A supply. The rebirth of the F-16 can take place in India, where the US has offered to become the manufacturer (and even exporter) advanced version of the F-16 Block 70/72.

Aircraft range Su-30MKI / MKI (A) / MCM / CM unlikely to reach the milestone of 4,500 cars, which has already surpassed the F-16, but we can confidently predict that the total sales of MCI / MCI family of (A) / MCM / CM be over 500 pieces. in the class of "4+" generation machines for the heavy fighter is a world-class success.

Among other factors, the good reputation of Su-30MKI significant contribution made by international exercise in which these aircraft engage with middle zero years.Over the past 12 years there were 13 exercises, involving Su-30K and Su-30MKI / MKM.

Opponents of Indian and Malaysian "crackers" were the F-15, F-16, F / A-18, the Mirage 2000, Rafale, Tornado, Typhoon, and, finally, the US military aircraft of the fifth generation F-22A.

The exercises provide a unique opportunity to compare the combat capabilities of the best Russian fighter generation "4+" and contemporary Western military aircraft, as well as given the way for a new round of discussions rivalry domestic aviation industry and Western schools. Of particular interest are the teachings in which heavy fighter met: on the one hand - the Su-30K, Su-30MKI and Su-30MKM, on the other - the F-15C and F-22A.

It is known that the Su-27 was created in response to the F-15. Moreover, in the TTZ on the Su-27 was formulated claim superiority over the American fighter that entered service a few years earlier. For many years it was not possible in practice to verify whether this goal has been achieved. Individual cases of simplified training fights beginning of the 1990s did not give the full picture. The situation has cleared up after a series of joint exercises, the Indian Air Force and the United States.

FIRST MEETING

Image

Home series put «CopeIndia 2004" exercises. On the part of the US Air Force participated in them six fighter jets F-15C from the air base Elmendorf (Alaska). India were Su-30K, which combat capabilities are not exceeded in any significant way the Su-27.

Teachings «CopeIndia 2004" were not comprehensive, but is a separate offensive and defensive air combat, both individual and group.

The results were surprising for both sides: Indian pilots, to my surprise, not to mention the Americans, just defeated enemy.

In the distant battles outside of visibility F-15C and Su-30K (with radar N001!) We found each other on the radar about the same distance, but the Indian pilots are often the first to perform conditional launches of missiles R-27 and, accordingly, often winning.

The maneuvering combat Su-30K (with engines without thrust vector control!) Totally outclassed F-15C. One of the factors of victory was the largest amount of fuel, which makes use of high-revving engine mode more often.

Value contingent losses amounted to 9: 1 in favor of the Indian Air Force. However, part of the victory came at the Mirage 2000 and upgraded MiG-21-93. It should be noted, «CopeIndia 2004" were the only exercises when defeat is not denied by representatives of the US Air Force.

The next campaign "ahead of Russian us" slogan Pentagon used to deal with the reduction of the provision for the development of the Air Force. Recall that it was at that time the Congress cut the volume of purchases of F-22A and doubted the F-35 program.

"Red flag" over America

In 2008, the "dry" and "needles" met again, this time in the United States. The situation in the Air Force of both countries by this time changed. And it's not just that the F-22A became operational. In 2006, we completed testing a new radar with active phased array AN / APG-63 (V) 3. Thus was created the basis for the modernization of the mass of nearly 200 F-15C / D US Air Force and the National Guard. In 2004, the US Air Force already had F-15C / D, which locator - AN / APG-63 (V) 2 - also had AFAR. However, in the exercise «CopeIndia 2004" they did not participate.

In turn, the Indian Air Force mastered the Su-30MKI, and even had time to check in battles with the F-16C / D US Air Force, Typhoon and Tornado F3 Air Force and French Air Force Mirage 2000.

In the United States exercises «RedFlag 2008" Indian Air Force Command has sent six Su-30MKI aircraft from 20 Squadron Lighting, two tankers Il-78MKI and one transport Il-76MD. The route length of 19 thousand. Km (!) Ran through the Middle East, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and a good half of the United States.

The main phase of the maneuvers was preceded by a three-week training at the Air Force Base Mountain Home, Idaho. Technically perfected during training flight operations procedures, conducting radio, etc. In reality, the most exciting air battles one-on-one, and a pair of a pair is held in Mountain Home, and not on the Nellis Air Force Base, where formally held the main phase of the exercises.

In Mountain Home, also flew a number of US aircraft: F-15C, and the more advanced F-15E from the 85-th test and the evaluation squadron from Eglin Air Base and eight F-16s of the 18th squadron "aggressors" in Alaska. The joint training flights the US Air Force and the Indian Air Force fighter jets practiced aerial combat one on one and a couple for a couple.

According to the Indian version, the Su-30MKI in preparation in Mountain Home, did not lose "aggressors" 18 Squadron any fight. Moreover - in the melee, "drying" never was even close to the affected area of the F-16. Several fights ended with no avail: the fighters were not able to occupy the position required for permanently destroying the target.

In agreeing "RedFlag 2008" scenario the subject of intense debate began operating modes "Bars" radar. The US side, hoping to get as much information about the modern Russian construction sights insisted on the use of combat modes. However, Hindus categorically refused to disclose all the parameters of the Su-30MKI radar.

Also, Indian Air Force Command has banned the use of active and passive jamming means in the United States, though the ban seriously complicate the life of the pilots. On-board defense system of the Su-30MKI in addition to jamming can "reveal" air defense system, to win the "RedFlag" series of exercises is of great importance. Another limitation was the Indian refusal to simulate battles with missiles R-77, an analogue of the US AIM-120C AMRAAM.

"Drying" participated in several group air combat. In one of these battles, "blue", which included the Su-30MKI, conventionally shot down 21 aircraft "red". In other episodes, the Americans managed to knock down a few of the Su-30MKI, but mainly in the performance of tasks to destroy ground targets.

Another feature of «RedFlag 2008", which can not be ignored. On «CopeIndia 2004" action F-15C / D aircraft is not maintained with the AWACS system that levels the playing field of American and Indian fighter. In Nevada, the situation has changed: F-15 and F-16 aircraft was prepared with the E-3 targeting in an automated mode, while the Su-30MKI could at best expect a voice on the radio team. Nevertheless, to achieve excellence American fighters could not.

Official information about the results of «RedFlag 2008" was virtually reduced to zero. At the same time a very informative discussion provoked the United States Air Force Colonel Terence Fornof. He privately posted a YouTube video in which he announced to the public the following judgments:

- Force India are experiencing problems with the engines of the Russian manufacture;

- Indian pilots are prone to "fratricide" - conditionally knocked "friendly" aircraft;

- F-15 is able to shoot down the Su-30MKI, etc.

The Indian side with the conclusions announced by the US Air Force colonel, strongly disagree. It was commented Hypothetical problems with the engines as follows:

- To get to Nevada Su-30MKI fighters flew over half of the globe;

- During the exercise of the Su-30MKI aircraft flew 850 hours, which is equivalent to the normal operation of the six fighter for four months;

- With 90 per cent readiness of the Su-30MKI has been provided.

"Destruction" of his fighter really was. However, it was a consequence of the ban on the use of in-vehicle information systems of Su-30MKI in full battle mode and - information exchange Indian pilots were only a voice on the radio.

As a result, the US Air Force formally renounced claims Fornofa and apologized to the Indian side.

Does "Raptor" was?

With the teachings of «RedFlag 2008" related intrigue, still not received permission.

Fighters F-22A Raptor, according to official data, in the «RedFlag 2008" did not participate. Nevertheless, the Americans would be logical to compare two of the most advanced fighter aircraft in production conditions close to real combat.

On the side of one of the Indian pilots sounded the following comment: "We are fighting with the" Raptor ". We bring them down in the first attack, and then started over again. So every time. F-15 did not able to do anything. " Comments on the US side has been received.

It should be noted that about the battle against the F-22A Rafale too silent for a long time in 2009. However, when in 2013 the French showed the video clip with the "Raptor" in sight, the Americans were forced to join the debate on the topic and who gets knocked down and as shareware.

BOUT over the South China Sea

The first officially recognized as meeting the Su-30MKM and F-22A took place in 2014 in Malaysia. The exercise «CopeTaufan 2014" four Su-30MKM of 11 Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Air Force were involved and six F-22A from the 19 th and 199 th squadrons stationed in Hawaii 154 th Fighter Wing United States Air Force. As usual on such exercises, became mandatory for air combat scenarios, one on one and a couple for a couple.

These teachings have caused a great interest in aviation circles around the world. However, none of the parties who participated in the «CopeTaufan 2014", the official information on the outcome of battles is not provided. However, after only a month after the leak appeared in the press about the teachings of "downed" Malaysians "Raptor". A short note about the dogfight Su-30MKM with the "Raptor" was published in the Malaysian Life & Times magazine at the end of July 2014:

- «Mogwai» (call sign of the pilot of the Su-30MKM) found to the right of the enemy himself. Planes converging at approximately 900 knots (1665 km / h). Fighters missed very quickly, but «Mogwai» instinctively rejected the stick back and sideways, entering his huge fighter left turn. Overloading pressed the pilot in the chair, he craned his neck, trying not to lose sight of the enemy. The sight appeared silhouette USAF fighter Lockheed Martin F-22A «Raptor». The pilot is constantly working ores, all the time «Mogwai» visually recorded the enemy, but with one eye watching the speed value, which is displayed on the Ilse. At a bend Su losing speed and power, and the "dog fight" always requires continuous monitoring of energy.

- The two fighters waged a classic battle in a horizontal plane at a height of 4600 m above the polygon Creek (Grik), Perak (Perak). «Mogwai» and «Smegs» (call operator BBG) piloted by the newest and most advanced multi-role fighter Malaysian Air Force - Sukhoi Su-30MKM «SuperFlanker». Nozzles two engines Lyulka AL-31FP strayed on a crazy angle, and "of Mogwai" began to perk up his fighter in the direction of the central part of the fuselage "Raptor".

- «Mogwai» saw before him "Raptor", which also is equipped with thrust vector deflection, but only in a vertical plane. On the HUD symbology appeared "capture" of stealth aircraft. Now «Mogwai» waited headphones hear a beep, allowing the use of weapons, or the target will be framed for the brand aimed fire from a cannon.

- In this battle one-on-one was allowed to use only SD and short-range guns. Armament "Raptor" consisted of SD AIM-9M "Sidewinder" and board sextuple gun M-61A "Volcano" 20 mm caliber. «SuperFlanker» carried supermanevrennye UR P-73, in addition, the Su-30MKM had a single-barreled 30-mm cannon GS-301.

- It was the second after taking off from an airbase Malaysian Air Force Butterworth fight ... The first success was accompanied by the guys from the cabin of "dry". As both fighters in the tanks after the first battle had enough fuel, the head of the exercises allow one more fight ...

- At a time when "of Mogwai" was preparing to shoot out of a cannon, the pilot "Raptor" banked the plane and at the same time lifted his nose, performing the maneuver with a large overload. With the "Raptor" frustrated wings clearly visible strands of air turbulence. The American turned on the afterburner, nozzle engines from F-119 blue flame burst. He went up almost vertically, like longing for heaven an angel.

- Pacak! Pacak! Diapacak, bai! - Shouted «Smegs». «Pacak» in the jargon of pilots Malaysian Air Force means "go up." «Mogwai» late for a split second. "Raptor" had dispersed before "of Mogwai" throttles moved to the "Zone 5", the inclusion afterburner. "Raptor" was no longer to catch up.

- After the flight, the Malaysian Air Force pilots have shared with Life & Times about his impressions of the two-week exercise «CopeTaufan». "Objectively in such exercises there are no winners or losers. For us, more important than a new experience ... They (the teachings) allow you to check the quality of our training and organization of flights, "- said the pilot« SuperFlanker ». The fighter pilots during the air battles using energy planning diagram / maneuverability [energymanoeuvringcharts, EMcharts]. "We have EMcharts for the F-15, but we did not know anything about the" Raptor ", as such information is extremely confidential. Now we have learned something and are able to schedule fights taking into account the shortcomings of the fighter, "- said the pilot of" dry ".

- The ability to come together face-to-face with the world's only 5th generation fighter, which is in service, has caused a stir Malaysian Air Force pilots. Many would proekzamenovat this fighter. Although the results of the exercise are secret, it is known that several Malaysian pilots perfectly proved themselves in battles with the "Raptor" ... If the F-15 Malaysian Air Force pilots have already met in the previous exercises, the «CopeTaufan 2014" marked the first appearance of the "Raptor" in South-East Asia.

CONCLUSIONS

Image
Nellis Air Force Base: Su-30MKI goes next flight Photo Katsuhiko Tokunaga.

As a result of the participation of the Indian Su-30MKI in international exercises can make a number of important conclusions.

In the battles outside the visual Su-30MKI visibility at least not inferior to any Western fighter generation "4" and "4+" even under conditions where the enemy is using AWACS aircraft.

The battles within visual sight Su-30MKI won by super-maneuverability, which provides engines with controlled thrust vectoring and improved control of the aircraft system. The only serial fighter, able to withstand the Su-30MKI in the nearby battles, potentially remains F-22A «Raptor».

The probability of entry into the "dog fight" remains high even in the presence of long-range missiles. On «CopeIndia 2004" there were cases when the station jamming old Indian MiG-21-93 blinded radar American fighter F-15, after which alternative melee just left.

Another important factor explaining the high combat effectiveness of the Su-30MKI - a crew of two. Navigator-operator is not busy piloting fighters, which means that all their attention may focus on air combat. Range-of-sight in clear weather at medium and high altitudes is very high and often exceeds launch range missiles "air-to-air" short range. For example, on the teachings of "RedFlag 2008", held in the desert conditions of excellent visibility, pilots trained squadrons of the USAF "aggressors" visually detected the F-15 fighter planes at a distance of 25-30 km, that is, at a range of medium-range missile launch. In the battles on the middle distance, especially the group, the navigator-operator takes the analysis of the situation and adjust the pilot action.

Another advantage of the Su-30MKI remains extremely powerful radar N011 "Bars". The British and Americans are all, without exception, conscientious exercise attempted to "remove" the parameters of the N011 radar, which used ground and airborne electronic intelligence means. According to Indian pilots, radar N011 surpasses set at "Typhoon" radar CAESAR. It was revealed in 2015 on the exercise «Indradanush 2015" in the UK. Thanks to the information exchange system can be performed in the missile attack "polutihom" mode. In this case, the attack is carried out at least a pair of Su-30MKI. One aircraft detects and maintains the goal of his radar, performs the second missile launch, without revealing its location radar work on radiation. It should also be noted that, according to the director general of NIIP them. Yury Tikhomirov White, "Barca" capabilities can be significantly increased through the installation of 5 kW transmitter, instead of today, having a power of 1 kW.

The results of the exercise, for all their importance, only fix the current state of affairs. At the same time a huge value has a permanent capacity building of existing aircraft systems. In this regard, the Su-30MKI platform provides tremendous opportunities. Fighters still close to the middle of the life cycle and have an inexhaustible potential for modernization.

The last time such exercises - «RedFlag Alaska» took place in the period from 16 April to 14 May 2016 the northernmost US state. Participants worked through the problem deployment of aviation groupings and air defense and support actions of ground forces.

India in Alaska were 10 aircraft, including four Su-30MKI. The groups, consisting of F-16s, F-15s, F / A-18 and F-22A, Indian "drying" played as a striker, and for the defending side.

The forces of "red", the decisive defensive tasks included a squadron of "aggressors" in the United States Air Force F-16 aircraft. "Blue" in the F-15, F-16, F-22, F / A-18, Su-30MKI and Jaguar practiced actions the attacking side. In another episode of the teachings of the Su-30MKI, speaking for the "red", performed the tasks in conjunction with the F-16 (the first experience of such cooperation). Some experts believe this episode integral part of the promotion of the F-16 and F / A-18 to India.

According to a press release from the Indian Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force aircraft in the exercise acted "extremely well." It is also interesting assessment of the deputy commander of the 354 th Fighter Wing United States Air Force Colonel William Culver: "Force India have demonstrated an exceptional level of training", all 10 Indian aircraft during all four weeks of stay were in the US is 100% ready to perform the task and every day took part in flights in accordance with the planned schedule.

At the least the upgrade needs Irbis class PESA , MAWS 360 * , New Gen AESA Internal EW pod ,Sensor Fusion & Common Standard Datalinks for Rafale , Tejas,MKI , Integration of all Indian and Russian weapon possible ,IAI Python -5 , DIRCM/Towed Decoy/Wing Tip Jammer , 65-70 % peacetime availability rate ........The rest are good to have depends on the mulla we can spend on each aircraft for upgrade and numbers involved.
Hope the upgrade is done fleet wide for all 272 aircraft.

Another 40 MKI for SFC with Hardwired for Nuclear Role and similar features like Indian Specific Rafale i.e AESA and rest of stuff you mentioned.

What is the timeline for Super 30 upgrade ? Now that money has been saved in MMRCA program good amount of funds can be diverted towards Super 30 upgrade that are much needed.

AESA radar is a must but I don't see any AESA from India or Russia in near ready state ( near IOC)
AL-41F engines are there and can be fitted to boost MKI TW ratio
Internal EW suite with AESA transmitter ( I don't see this anywhere close to be ready yet, What is the status of Himalyan EW suite ?)
Same as above for DIRCM, OLS-50 -- don't know what is the state of their readiness.

We should strive for commonality with FGFA/PAKFA but i don't see stuff ready yet.

New software for sensor and data fusion but that will take a few years atleast.

Now that MMRCA saga is resolved hopefully Super 30 upgrade program should be chalked out and set rolling by current dispensation at the centre.

To fully exploit the new radar, irst, ew , datalinks and weapons of next gen std the core avionics and compute architecture will need to be revamped and beefed up. The qhd all glass samoled cockpit would bd only part of it the visible ui. Work on that has to begin years ahead of mlu to derisk project and keep building blocks ready

AFAIK , MKI already has open architecture framework so they can use the Tejas Mk2 Architecture which is based on PPC if I am not wrong and is based on OAC like MKI ...with OA its easier to replace specific component and add new one to it.

117S would need modification of intake as it need higher airflow. So its not a simple plug and play replacement for AL-31FP they will have to modify the intake for higher air inflow requirement

If they need higher thrust they can opt for Salut AL-31FM2 series engine , from Salut press
Salut has completed bench testing of the improved AL31FM-2 engine, confirming its ability to deliver the promised thrust of 14,500 kg (almost 32,000 pounds) at full afterburner, some two tons more than the standard AL31F (27,560 pounds). This version is intended for new-build Sukhoi Su-34 frontal bombers and Su-27SM single-seat multirole fighters being procured by the Russian air force.
FM series affords higher thrust without modifying the intake.

KRET is using fifth-generation developments to upgrade the Su-30SM

http://kret.com/en/news/3991/

KRET’s developments will significantly increase the aircraft’s combat effectiveness
KRET is carrying out development work to upgrade the avionics of the Su-30SM and its export version, the Su-30MKI. KRET’s developments will significantly increase the aircraft’s combat effectiveness.

Work on the further modification of the Su-30SM fighter jet is taking place in accordance with recommendations from the Russian Defense Ministry, specifically regarding the expansion of the capabilities of its avionics, radar, and sighting system.

As noted by Vladimir Mikheev, advisor to the First Deputy CEO of KRET, when including all of the contracts signed for the Su-30SM and Su-30MKI, by 2020 it will be one of the most numerous aircraft in the Russian Air Force and Navy, as well as in the armed forces of India, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Angola.

"For this reason we are now working on a major upgrade of these aircraft. Work is underway to improve the characteristics of the aircraft’s radar system, as well as its optoelectronic sighting and navigation systems. We expect to develop solutions that will meet all future requirements of the Russian Ministry of Defense, as well as the demands of foreign partners to replace the foreign systems that are currently installed on the Su-30MKI,” he said.

KRET enterprises have produced more than 60% of the avionics for the SU-30SM. One of the concern’s developments, the BINS-SP2 strapdown inertial navigation system, allows the fighter jets to navigate even in the absence of satellite, land-based, or offshore navigation systems.

The most important element of the aircraft, which enables its superiority over the enemy, is the Bars phased array radar developed by V. Tikhomirov Scientific Research Institute of Instrument Design (NIIP). This radar can detect targets at ranges up to 120 km, track 15 at once, and simultaneously fire on four of them. The major advantage of this radar is its ability to work equally well when targeting air, ground, and sea targets.

In addition, KRET is producing the OEPrNK-30SM electro-optical sighting and navigation system as part of the aircraft’s avionics. It includes systems for flight and navigation, optical location, helmet-mounted targeting, weapons control, and information display, as well as an on-board digital computer system. OEPrNK-30SM works alongside the aircraft’s radar sighting system to direct precision weapons to the target using heat-seeking and laser rangefinder capabilities.

All of these systems are constantly being improved thanks to results from the practical application of combat aircraft systems, as well as KRET’s own R&D work.

What choice do they have ?

Byelka N036 is nowhere ready (neither its date are known)
Don't think Russians will allow Elta 2052 on their plane
Our Uttam AESA for LCA is still under development

So Irbis PESA is the only choice or Zhuk AESA -- FGA 29 or FGA 35 (which I don't know how good it will be ? I would be more comfortable with NIIP making the system and not Phazotron)

Also, what jammer system will be used in Super 30 upgrade ?

They havent mentioned any specific AESA could be N036 or Zhuk-AE , Even PESA upgrade are to bring BARS to Irbis standard/capability not replace BARS with Irbis. Even if the deal were to sign today they would take 2-3 years to get the first Super MKI ready depending on the complexity of upgrade. IIRC even 29UPG upgrade took that long.
Also, what jammer system will be used in Super 30 upgrade ?
the wing tip could be Khibiny jamming pod as on Su-35 but could easily have DARE/DRDO EW system as well.

The maximum we introduce and standardise on DRDO/DARE systems EW,Datalink,MAWS etc which is common to Tejas Mk2 and Rafale the better it would be that goes even for the weapons

Has India Finally Addressed Its Su-30MKI Woes?
http://thediplomat.com/2016/10/has-indi ... 0mki-woes/
Satellite imagery, acquired by DigitalGlobe and Planet Labs, indicates the presence of the SU-30MKI Flanker H multirole fighters at Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur airbase. The airbase, subordinate to India’s Southern Air Command (SAC), remains an important deployment location to project power from the southern peninsula. Thanjavur is the only airbase in India’s SAC where observers routinely see the frontline fighters deployed.
I checked Google Maps and Thanjavur AFS has seven Rambhas parked on the tarmac.

I had forgotten how many videos I had collected up and was surprised to find that LGB video and that night video of bombs. That makes the MKI pretty versatile and this is definitely not its total inventory

One of Russia's Most Lethal Fighter Jets Has a Strange New Role

The Russian Aerospace Forces are starting to convert their aerial demonstration team onto the powerful new Sukhoi Su-30SM Flanker-H.

The Russian Knights aerial demonstration team currently flies the original Su-27 version of the Flanker. But exactly why the Russians would allocate some of their best operational combat aircraft to an aerobatics team is somewhat puzzling. The Su-30SM is gross overkill for a mission that is mostly formation flying over the public at airshows. A cheaper, less sophisticated aircraft such as the Su-30M2 would have made more sense if the Russian military absolutely needed a new frontline fighter to showcase at such events.

“A second batch of Su-30sm have just arrived in Kubinka from the factory for the Russian Knights,” a Russian defense ministry spokesman told the Moscow-based TASS news agency [3]. “The air group is fully equipped with new fighters for the new training period. Starting on Dec. 1, the pilots will fly the new aircraft.”

However, while the Russian Knights aerial demonstration team will fly eight Su-30SM fighters, they will retain a number of Su-27s. Presumably with the addition of the thrust-vectoring Su-30SM into the mix, the unit will add new maneuvers to their routine that take advantage of the new jet’s capabilities.

The U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds [4], which are that service’s demonstration team, currently flies the Lockheed Martin F-16C Block 52D version of the Fighting Falcon. Indeed, the Thunderbirds are among the very few active duty Air Force units to fly the Pratt & Whitney F100-powered versions (the F100-PW-229 variant in this case) of the F-16.

There was a lot of grumbling among U.S. Air Force pilots about Thunderbirds operating some of the newest and most capable F-16s in the service’s inventory when the squadron traded in their older F-16 Block 32 jets. Even the unit’s then-commander agreed that the Thunderbirds did not need those newest frontline aircraft.

The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels, [5] meanwhile, operate some of the oldest Boeing F/A-18 Hornets in the fleet. The team is currently in the middle of a transition from the oldest remaining F/A-18A-model jets to the somewhat newer F/A-18C. There are currently three single-seat F/A-18As, one two-seat F/A-18B, ten single-seat F/A-18Cs and a pair of two-seat F/A-18D in the squadron’s inventory.

It’s possible that the Navy might eventually convert the squadron over to the oldest F/A-18E/F Super Hornets in its inventory. But as a unit whose primary job is to perform at airshows, the Blue Angels are not the first in line to receive top-of-the-line hardware. Combat units always get the first dibs on the most modern hardware in the Navy—it’s a matter of priorities. “While the Super Hornet has more recent technology, the Hornet has been a reliable asset for 30 years, and its many capabilities continue to meet the needs for the demonstration,” as the Blue Angels state on their site.

This video is the epitome of "carefree handling". Beautiful bharatanatyam in the sky augmented by a super tele camera lens with motion stabilization AND a cameraman who has done this before and reviewed his videos for quality rather than streaming neta's face after losing track of the aircraft.

India to train Vietnam air force in flying Sukhoi

http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/nation ... 32654.html
Expanding its outreach in China's backyard, India will train Sukhoi-30 pilots of Vietnam.

The two sides today agreed to train the pilots. This is the second major training programme after Vietnamese Navy was trained by Indian Navy in operating Russian-origin kilo-class submarines.

The agreement was signed at a meeting between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Vietnamese counterpart Gen Ngo Xuan Lich on Monday in New Delhi.

Vietnam operates Sukhoi-30 MK2 while India operates the Sukhoi-30 MKI.

Being below the intakes and in direct line of dirt being thrown up from the runway I doubt it it is for FOD. But I don't know what they are for. Watching the video closely makes it seem like the wink open at low airspeed - maybe high angle of attack also to keep air coming into the engine even when the plane is slipping backwards in a manoeuvre.

There is one point in the video when the plane is almost stationary with nose pointed up and afterburners are on - so clearly it is not forward movement ramming air into the engines - they are sucking air. Possibly this is where the louvres play a role
