In fact, a federal official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Mr. Rahami had actually traveled to Pakistan, for three months in 2011 and, most recently, to Quetta, for nearly a year, where he stayed with family, returning to the United States in March 2014. While there, he is believed to have married.

Back in New Jersey, he and his relatives had a fractious relationship with neighbors and the police in Elizabeth, N.J., because of the always-open hours of their restaurant and the rackety customers it attracted. The longstanding friction led to the Rahami family’s filing a lawsuit in 2011 against the city and its Police Department in which they alleged that they were harassed and intimidated because of their religion. They accused a local businessman of complaining to them, “Muslims make too much trouble in this country.”

Now, Mr. Rahami is suspected of being responsible for the bombings over the weekend in both New York and New Jersey. He was taken into custody on Monday after being discovered asleep in a bar doorway in New Jersey and then wounded in a gun battle with the police.

Pew Global Survey excerpt dealing with Indian support levels for use of force against terrorism, increased defence spending and high lighting human rights issues globally.

Findings suggest that the Indian electorate strongly supports use of military force to defeat Islamic Republic of Pakistan fomented State sponsored Mohammadden Terrorism, is ready and willing to fund that action and approves of India talking taking action to support victims of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Punjabi controlled Military oppression of Balochi’s, Pathans, Sindhi’s, Mohajirs and our own Kashmiri citizens living under illegal occupation:
With roughly half (52%) the Indian public worried that ISIS poses a major threat to their country, about six-in-ten Indians (62%) believe that overwhelming military force is the best way to defeat terrorism around the world. Just 21% say relying too much on such force creates hatred that leads to more terrorism.

And Indians are ready to back up that commitment with more defense spending. Across party lines, more than six-in-ten (63%) think the country should increase spending on national defense, just 6% want to decrease it and 20% want to keep it at current levels. Notably, Indians who see China’s growing military power as a very serious problem are more likely than those who see China’s growing military power as a less serious threat to favor increased military spending.

Finally, a plurality of Indians (46%) voice support for making the improvement of human rights around the world one of India’s most important foreign policy goals. Roughly a quarter (27%) say improving human rights is important, but that many other foreign policy goals should be more important. Just 5% believe human rights should not be an important Indian foreign policy objective.

X Posted from the "Indian Foreign Policy" thread.

Excerpt from Pew Global survey on our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of our foreign policy. Indians are found to be a pretty disgruntled lot when it comes to our PM’s handling of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Given Pew’s finding elsewhere in the survey for robust support for use of military force and backing that up with increased spending, it would be reasonable to suppose that the electorates disgruntlement is because PM Modi’s handling of the Islamic republic of Pakistan is viewed as not robust enough:
Modi’s foreign policy

Modi fares less well in public assessment of his handling of relations with other countries, despite having taken 51 trips to 42 nations since he became prime minister in 2014.

The prime minister has made four trips to the United States since taking office. More than half (54%) of Indians approve of Modi’s dealings with Washington. Just 15% disapprove. But roughly three-in-ten (31%) voice no opinion. Notably, public approval of Modi’s handling of America is down 12 percentage points since 2015 despite his having visited the U.S. more than any other country during his premiership.

More than four-in-ten Indians (43%) approve of Modi’s relationship with Russia, while 25% disapprove. But 32% say they “don’t know.” Support for the prime minister’s dealings with Moscow is up 6 points since 2015.

About four-in-ten (38%) back Modi’s handling of ties with China. Roughly three-in-ten (32%) disapprove, while 30% express no opinion. Such sentiment is largely unchanged from last year.

Just 22% of the public approves of Modi’s management of India’s volatile relationship with Pakistan. Half disapprove. This harsh judgment is relatively unchanged from 2015.

In the handling of China, supporters of Modi’s own party, the BJP, are more likely than adherents of the Congress party to favor his conduct of bilateral relations. Notably, however, more than half of BJP supporters (54%) and a plurality of Congress party adherents (45%) disapprove of the prime minister’s handling of relations with Pakistan. However, the proportion of Indians responding “don’t know” is higher among Congress supporters (35%) than among BJP adherents (23%).

Dont trust the western media and polling on this. There is a agenda and are trying to change Indian opinion
Foreign publication dont have much clue to the Indian relations to other countries.

Dont give much importance to this when they have never worried about terrorism killing Indians and also with american arms
Lot of this is propaganda for the western viewers. Indians should look after Indian interest

There was another publication trying to understand Indian state relations with other countries. It was speculating about Indian relations with other regions, culture and other states

Maria Toorpakai, Pakistani squash player, strikes a blow for girls and women

Unfortunately Maria Toorpakai is more likely to strike women and girls rather than strike a blow for girls and women. Her conduct on the squash court against Joshna Chinnappa during the Guwahati 2016 SAF Games was to say the least aggressive though Toorpakai in the end came out the worse for initiating the aggression both from a physical injury viewpoint and viewpoint of winning the medal. See First Link Below.

Anyway, aggression notwithstanding, Maria Toorpakai has managed a Canadian Visa without having to undergo what the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s former Military Dictator Gen. Pervez Musharraf distastefully alleged was a ploy to get a Visa to visit Canada. See Second link below.:

After squash gold, Joshna Chinappa slams Pakistani opponent for excessive aggression

Aamir Khan the son of Nasir Hussain should actually be pronounced as Aamir Khaa (n being nasal) as he is also a Shia! US Secretary of State John Kerry asks Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to take steps to deal with terror groups
NEW YORK: US Secretary of State John Kerry has asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to prevent terrorists from using Pakistani territory as safe havens, as he expressed strong concern over the violence in Kashmir particularly the terror attack on an Indian army base.

<snip>

US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said that the US want to see more progress from Pakistan in dealing with the terror groups effectively.

"We've seen some progress; we want to see more, and I think moving forward we'll just continue to work closely and try to encourage greater counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan but also within the region," Toner said.

Later, State Department Spokesperson John Kirby said that Kerry "reiterated the need for Pakistan to prevent all terrorists from using Pakistani territory as safe havens, while commending recent efforts by Pakistani security forces to counter extremist violence."

"The Prime Minister and Secretary Kerry expressed strong concern with recent violence in Kashmir - particularly the army base attack - and the need for all sides to reduce tensions," he said. [One small concession i.e Kashmir was mentioned but tilted by the specific reference to Indian army base attack]

In one of the deadliest attacks on the Indian Army in recent years, 18 soldiers were killed and as many others injured as heavily armed militants stormed a battalion headquarters of the force in Kashmir's Uri town early Sunday.

Kerry also stressed the need for restraint in nuclear weapons programs.
<snip>
Meaningless as far as the ground situation is concerned but by stressing Bakis duty US has told Bakis that they are not interested in its version on Kashmir. Also, the western world takes it cues from Washington so most other responses to Baki pleas will follow similar line.

Kerry is playing to the gallery and is indulging in red-herrings.
The real issue remains 26/11 which is unfinished business. Pakistan was never condemned, sanctioned or put under the scope for this one, and subsequent evidence showing that western agencies colluded and provided cover for the atrocity is ample since that period.

Yep!! KHAAn is a title given in India by mughals (persians or iranians poets, singers, arts, etc) while KHAN is a title of mongolia (Chengez Khan) and now mostly limited to Afghanis of Pashtun descendants.

New York bomb suspect travelled to Pakistan many times
New York: New York bombings suspect, Ahmad Khan Rahami, an Afghanistan-born American, had travelled multiple times to Pakistan and Afghanistan, and was even married to a Pakistani woman, investigations have revealed. Rahami, 28, travelled to Quetta in Pakistan, which is said to be a stronghold of Islamic extremists, as well as to Kandahar in Afghanistan, reported UK daily Independent. On his visit to Quetta in July 2011, he married a Pakistani woman. Two years later, he made another trip to Pakistan along with his brother, Mohammad, and stayed there for a year, Independent reported. He stayed with his family members, who were refugees, in Quetta. He was questioned every time he returned to the United States, as is standard procedure, but was not on the radar as someone who might have been radicalised. According to Rahami's neighbours in New Jersey, his behaviour had changed after he returned from his trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan. Flee Jones, who claimed to have known Rahami since they were teenagers, told reporters that he became more religious, started growing a beard and dressed differently after he returned from Afghanistan in 2014......

He also shipped off his mother and wife to Pakistan just a little while ago.
He goes to Quetta the headquarters of Taliban and is not on radar? And his neighbors say he started growing beard after his 2014 trip. His wife is his handler as in San Bernardino shooter case.
In this case she didn't want to get caught or die.
We don't know how many such 'Lone Wolfs' TSP has stashed in US under refugee program.

I say TSP because look at his bombs and where they were placed?
- Number of bombs is quite large. He is a virtual bomb factory guy.
- Explosive was more powerful than Boston Marathon fire cracker black powder.
- Bombs were placed in dumpsters in side streets. And cause minimal damage.
- Next time could be more severe is the message from TSP to US.

Give us (TSP) baksheesh (F-16s and money) you(USA) are withholding.

And all this while Uri Attack is going on same time.

Kudos to Afghanistan for being bold to point this out openly.

Let’s shun Saarc meet in Pakistan, Afghanistan tells India
NEW DELHI: India found support from Afghanistan in its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan on Tuesday. Afghan envoy to India Shaida Mohammad Abdali said that countries in the region should come together to boycott the Saarc summit in Islamabad over the host nation's role in "destabilising" the neighbourhood.
In an interview to NDTV, Abdali said the terrorism being unleashed by Pakistan was lethal and systematic as also state-sponsored and called on neighbouring countries to unite to end the violence. Asked if India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh should join hands to boycott the Saarc summit in November, he said there should be a comprehensive effort to stamp out terror.

We have to make sure that we bring the maximum number of countries and I am sure most of the countries in South Asia are in line with what Afghanistan and India think," Abdali said. He said the country spoiling regional stability should be singled out.

"Definitely, we should single a country that spoils our unity and spoils regional stability and peace and that stops integration and connectivity," he said. "There must be zero tolerance (towards terrorism). This is state-sponsored terrorism. It is no more an issue of non-state actors.. Now, there is ample proof of this as state-sponsored terrorism and, therefore, we have to revisit our mechanisms. We have a global war on terror that must be revisited," Abdali said.

Diversionary tactics whenever the heat is on. Offer to co-operate like with Mumbai and Pathankot and wait for the matter to cool down and go back to the usual programming .... While we cannot refuse an offer of co-operation, if it is ever made, experience tells us that this is a fruitless exercise to buy time. We must continue to pursue long-term plans to fix the *source* of the problem on a parallel track.

http://www.dawn.com/news/1284915
Exclusive: Responding to a dangerous time

Inam ul Haque, Riaz Hussain Khokhar and Riaz Mohammad Khan are former foreign secretaries and retired major general Mahmud Durrani is a former national security adviser.
Pakistan is facing an exceptionally dangerous challenge with aggressive rhetoric and threats from India and Afghanistan and hostile narratives gaining resonance in Washington.

Failing to suppress the sustained uprising in India-held Kashmir, the Modi government has intensified its smear campaign against Pakistan in yet another attempt to portray the Kashmiri protest as Pakistan-inspired terrorism.

Following the attack on the Uri Indian army camp, India may heat up the Line of Control (LoC) to detract attention from its atrocities in the Valley. Pakistan should even be ready for worse.

In this trying situation, Pakistan can rely on diplomatic support from China and friends in the Islamic world. But much depends on our own defence preparedness and our diplomacy. We need to devise a policy response that helps reduce the threat without giving the Kashmiris a feeling of a let-down.

First we must address our vitiated relations with Kabul and Washington which have nosedived since the collapse of the quadripartite process.

Regardless of the grave policy errors made since its intervention in Afghanistan, much like those made later in Iraq, Washington has chosen to blame Pakistan for its woes in Afghanistan. Both Washington and Kabul believe that sanctuaries in Pakistan sustain the Afghan Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.

Our well-intentioned commitment to nudge the Taliban towards reconciliation, bring them to the negotiating table and our apparent eagerness to play a role have turned us into a Taliban accomplice. It is time to rethink our Taliban policy.

We must make a clear policy declaration that Pakistan cannot take any responsibility on behalf of the Afghan Taliban leadership and we would welcome direct contacts between them and the government or any political elements in Kabul for the purpose of reconciliation. We would still be willing to play a role only if specifically requested.

Secondly, we must reaffirm that we will do all we can to prevent use of our territory for militant activities inside Afghanistan and take visible measures for this purpose. This is our responsibility as a state. We cannot justify differentiated emphasis for Operation Zarb-i-Azb which attracts the accusation that we distinguish between “good and bad” Taliban.

The suggested declaration to be made at the highest level, preferably as part of the prime minister’s UNGA address, will be a step in the right direction to bring down temperatures, particularly in our relations with Washington.

We must reflect why is it that Pakistan has ended up always siding with the most regressive elements in Afghanistan, some of whom we falsely regarded as assets, why most educated Afghans have become alienated from us and why we allowed our policy to fall in the insidious Afghan ethnic divide.

We must disavow pretentions of influence with the Taliban leadership. They and before them the Afghan Mujahedin leaders never acceded to our sincere advice for ending the conflict. We must be firm with the likes of the Haqqani group who cannot be allowed to abuse our hospitality.

We must also expedite fencing, consolidating and better managing the border. Promisingly, the government is showing seriousness in integrating Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The perception of Pakistan’s erstwhile support to extremist militancy in Kashmir in the 1990s and our association with the Taliban have hurt Pakistan’s international image.

Of late, the delay in prosecuting especially those implicated in the Mumbai terrorist incident has been misconstrued as weak Pakistani commitment to fighting terrorism, the nemesis of all modern societies. This undermines Pakistan’s ability to forcefully advocate the Kashmir cause.

Nothing will help India more than an evidence of outside militant elements blending with the indigenous Kashmiri uprising to justify its extreme violence in India-held Kashmir and its aggressive posture against Pakistan. We should be open to cooperating with any investigation into the Uri attack.

This is, however, no time to reflect on what happened in the past. The ongoing Kashmiri struggle against repressive Indian rule, demands clear and emphatic expression of solidarity. The prime minister is expected to do so at the UNGA and in his meetings with world leaders.

The uprising in Kashmir is not Pakistan instigated as India claims. Kashmir is the oldest dispute on the agenda of the world body waiting international attention for its resolution.

Above all, it is the Kashmiris and the Kashmiri Diaspora, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom, who must fully mobilise themselves to agitate world conscience to their suffering and the denial of their fundamental rights. They have a vital role to play.

Pakistan should consult Kashmiri leaders from both sides of the LoC and from Diaspora and they must reach out to each other to chart out a course that corresponds to the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

If offered, Pakistan cannot refuse a dialogue with India as the two nuclear-armed neighbours cannot afford a break in communications. However, Kashmiri leaders must be involved with the process for a settlement that ensures peace and enables Kashmiris to be masters of their own affairs and destiny.

Nawaz Sharif raising Kashmir with all leaders amid isolation fears
Last Updated: Wednesday, September 21, 2016 - 10:12
United Nations: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has raised the Kashmir issue with almost every world leader he has held talks with on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, but his efforts to internationalise the dispute with India appeared to have gained no traction.
Sharif raised the issue with the leaders of the US, the UK, Japan and Turkey and sought their intervention to resolve the matter. He met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan here yesterday.
"PM Sharif briefed Japanese PM about the grave turn that the situation in occupied Kashmir is taking. Reminded him about UNSC resolutions," Pakistan's envoy to the UN Maleeha Lodhi tweeted.
"PM Nawaz Sharif also apprised his Japanese counterpart of the human rights violations being committed by Indian occupation forces in Kashmir," Lodhi said in another tweet. Erdogan and Sharif "agreed that OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) Comm on Human Rights should send a fact-finding mission" to Kashmir, Lodhi said.

Pakistan to launch remote-sensing satellite in 2018: president - DAWN
As space technology is being used in the planning and monitoring of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) will launch the country’s first remote-sensing satellite in March, 2018.

The ultimate aim of launching the remote-sensing satellite will be giving a boost to the national development activities, President Mamnoon Hussain said here on Tuesday while inaugurating the second international conference on space.

“Effective use of space technology is vital for national development and being a developing country Pakistan is striving to improve living standards of its masses and utilising space technology in various sectors like communication, agriculture, infrastructure, development, environmental monitoring, hazards warning and education,” the president said.

“Our ongoing cooperation and collaboration with international and regional agencies such as UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation, COSPAS Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking, Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum and International Telecommunication Union in the areas of space science and technology is a testimony to the values we attach to collaboration and knowledge-sharing in this important sector,” he said.
