United States - Human Rights Monitor

Post by RoyG »

Human Rights/Religious bodies based in the United States routinely collect and store data on perceived Human Rights violations taking place in India. Creating this thread to return the favor especially at a time when its women and ethnic/religious/LGBT minorities are facing the brunt of White Protestant majoritarianism.

Personal accounts of racial/religious bigotry and violence from those who live or visit the United States should also be posted.

I think war crimes fall under the general human rights umbrella. Post away.

The aim should be to build an online data base of human rights violations committed by the United States on their own territory and the world.

There are a few specifics that I would like to include:

Police brutality against minorities.

Bullying of minorities including Hindus in US schools.

Misrepresentation of minority religion/culture/tradition and revisionism in academia (ex. California text book case)

Violent hate crimes against minorities.

Religious bigotry shown by Christian leaders, mainlines churches, and missionaries against people of other faiths.

Following is a dated information but very relevant. Following survey should make anyone with young children nervous.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a survey in 2010. The link below has the executive summary.

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey

The top key findings were very scary...
Sexual Violence by Any Perpetrator
  • Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) :-o and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives, including completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, or alcohol/drug facilitated completed penetration.
  • More than half (51.1%) of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8% by an acquaintance; for male victims, more than half (52.4%) reported being raped by an acquaintance and 15.1% by a stranger.
  • More than one-quarter of male victims of completed rape (27.8%) experienced their first rape when they were 10 years of age or younger :-o

This Week May See the Largest Prison Strike in US History
Across 24 states, inmates are sick of poisoned water, solitary confinement, and forced labor.
By John Washington
his September 9, we may witness the largest prison strike in US history. Potentially thousands of inmates across both state and federal prisons in as many as 24 states plan to engage in a coordinated strike and protest in an attempt to bring attention to the daily injustice of their lives. The strikers are calling for an end to “slave-like” working conditions, illegal reprisals, and inhumane living conditions.

Planned for the 45th anniversary of the Attica Prison uprising, the actions of September 9 will shed light on the often decrepit conditions suffered by the 2.4 million people in what is the largest carceral system in the world. They will also mark a new point in the fight against mass incarceration, and likely stand as a harbinger for further actions and strikes to come. Malik Washington, an inmate in the H. H. Coffield Unit in Texas and the chief spokesperson for the End Prison Slavery in Texas movement, wrote to me in a letter: “Prisoners in Amerikan prisons are sick and tired of being degraded, dehumanized, and exploited.”

North Dakota Law Enforcement Just Moved Into A Native American Pipeline Protest
On Thursday, Sioux tribe members continued for a second day to block workers at a Bakken pipeline construction site near where the Cannonball and Missouri rivers meet, prompting law enforcement to move in. This is an escalation from months of “spirit camp” protests — camps where tribe members pray as a group for hours at a time.
What is not being said is the law enforcement is not done by state troopers or by officers of law. Its done by private contractors who have experience in war zones. They are setting attack dogs on peaceful protestors.

The native American tribes are already suffering. They have suffered immensely since the Euro peons arrived and decimated their culture. And this is just worsening. 200 Tribes are protesting along with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. This is BIG. The standing Rock Sioux lost 10,000 acres to the USG in 1964. And now they are going to loose more.

Good posts guys. Native Americans are treated like straight up garbage in the US. Alcoholism is very high in the population. As far as prisons go, they simply love filling them w/ blacks. It's not enough that whites simply find their presence unacceptable b/c of their skin color. They have to poison the entire community by waging a drug war which keeps the street price high and create cartels and gangs b/c of it. Blacks and Natives are probably the best examples of US hypocrisy when it comes to Human Rights.

'Terrorism' Flyer Targeting Sikh Mayoral Candidate Being Investigated As Possible Bias Crime
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-amer ... as-n817691
The Hoboken Police Department in New Jersey said Sunday it was investigating as a possible bias crime flyers that feature a photo of a Sikh mayoral candidate wearing a turban and the message “Don’t let TERRORISM take over our Town!”

The leaflets, distributed days before Tuesday’s upcoming election, display a picture of Councilman Ravi Bhalla, who is running for mayor, with the caption about terrorism above his head.

The Secret History of the American Empire

John Perkins talked about his book, The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and the Truth about Global Corruption, published by Dutton. It is a follow-up to his 2005 book, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. Mr. Perkins argued that the United States uses its foreign policy to further U.S. business interests around the globe, often to the detriment of poor countries. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.

Dream Change is a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable development. Mr. Perkins is a former international business consultant.

United States involvement in regime change
United States involvement in regime change has entailed both overt and covert actions aimed at altering, replacing, or preserving foreign governments. In the latter half of the 19th century, the U.S. government initiated actions for regime change mainly in Latin America and the southwest Pacific, and included the Mexican–American, Spanish–American and Philippine–American wars. At the onset of the 20th century the United States shaped or installed friendly governments in many countries around the world, including neighbors Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

During World War II, the United States helped overthrow many Nazi Germany or imperial Japanese puppet regimes. Examples include regimes in the Philippines, Korea, the Eastern portion of China, and much of Europe. United States forces were also instrumental in ending the rule of Adolf Hitler over Germany and of Benito Mussolini over Italy.

In the aftermath of World War II, the U.S. government struggled with the Soviet Union for global leadership and influence within the context of the Cold War. It expanded the geographic scope of its actions beyond its traditional area of operations, Central America and the Caribbean. Significant operations included the U.S. and U.K.-orchestrated 1953 Iranian coup d'état, the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion targeting Cuba, and support for the overthrow of Sukarno by Army General Suharto in Indonesia. In addition, the U.S. has interfered in the national elections of many countries, including in Japan in the 1950s and 1960s to keep its preferred center-right Liberal Democratic Party in power using secret funds, in the Philippines to orchestrate the campaign of Ramon Magsaysay for president in 1953, and in Lebanon to help Christian parties in the 1957 elections using secret cash infusions.[1] The U.S. has executed at least 81 overt and covert known interventions in foreign elections during the period 1946–2000.[2]

Also after World War II, the United States in 1945 ratified[3] the UN Charter, the preeminent international law document,[4] which legally bound the U.S. government to the Charter's provisions, including Article 2(4), which prohibits the threat or use of force in international relations, except in very limited circumstances.[5] Therefore, any legal claim advanced to justify regime change by a foreign power carries a particularly heavy burden.[6]

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the United States has led or supported wars to determine the governance of a number of countries. Stated U.S. aims in these conflicts have included fighting the War on Terror as in the 2001 Afghan war, or removing dictatorial and hostile regimes in the 2003 Iraq War and 2011 military intervention in Libya.

The Indian Health Service’s severe underfunding and pervasive problems represent a broken system that is failing the Native American population and that symbolizes our country’s continued mistreatment of Native Americans as a whole. Because “hate” is hard to define, anti-American Indian groups have gone mostly unnoticed in a culture built around subtle, consistent aggressions against Indigenous peoples. McAdam and others say this helps normalize their message in political discourse and opens easy lines of attack that are coded in legalese and rely on stereotypes. But ultimately, it damages the human rights of Indigenous peoples: their lands, histories and bodies. “It’s something we face every day,” Pease-Lopez says. “You almost have to have an outsider come in to say, ‘This isn’t normal.’ ”

Often the violation of religious freedom was far more subtle. At each reservation, authorities distributed treaty payments—in the form of food, clothing, livestock, and farming capital—at their own discretion. They developed a system of rewards and punishments in which Native people, sometimes starving from lack of resources, were forced to give up the public display of their traditions simply to survive. Public expressions of ritual and belief had to go underground, even in cases where treaty agreements stipulated the freedom to practice traditional religious ways.

Native Americans who were part of a little-known Mormon program from 1947 to the mid-1990s share much of the same story. Year after year, missionaries or other members of the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints approached these families and invited their children into Mormon foster homes. As part of the Mormon Indian Student Placement Program, Native American children would live with Mormon families during the school year, an experience designed to “provide educational, spiritual, social, and cultural opportunities in non-Indian community life,” according to the Church. Typically, the Mormon foster families were white and financially stable. Native American children who weren’t already Mormon were baptized. And some of them now claim they were sexually abused.

Editor’s note: It may seem like papal statements from 500 years ago are ancient history. But Native American activists and scholars insist that Catholicism's past continues to affect the present. Papal bulls from the 1400s condoned the conquest of the Americas and other lands inhabited by indigenous people. The papal documents led to an international norm called the Doctrine of Discovery, which dehumanized non-Christians and legitimized their suppression by nations around the world, including by the United States. Now Native Americans say the church helped commit genocide and refuses to come to terms with it

https://www.cracked.com/article_24500_5 ... erica.html
Basically, any non-Native can walk onto a reservation, commit a crime of their choosing, walk out, and indigenous authorities are powerless to do anything. Don't believe us? Watch the Chief Justice of the Cherokee Supreme Court tell Samantha Bee that he can do 100 percent of nothing if she were to walk onto Cherokee land and punch his mother in the face. That's because, when the perpetrator is non-Native and the victim is indigenous, only a federal officer can make an arrest, and since federal officers don't care to pass through tribal land except to lose their paycheck at a craps table, those perpetrators are basically immune, on account of there being no one around with the authority to arrest them.

The Southern Baptist Convention gathers for its annual national meeting Tuesday with one sobering topic — sex abuse by clergy and staff — overshadowing all others.
“For years, there were people who assumed abuse was simply a Roman Catholic problem,” said the Rev. Russell Moore, who heads the church’s public policy arm. “I see that mentality dissipating. There seems to be a growing sense of vulnerability and a willingness to address this crisis.”

https://splash4ripples.com/2019/06/17/h ... ex-crimes/
As of this morning evidence has surfaced that Stanley Fox, of Pennsylvania, knew of the sex crimes committed by Christian Aid Ministries (CAM) staff member since sometime 2016-2017.
Haiti will need to navigate this criminal mess against one of the largest USA Christian relief work organizations – making the Forbes top 100 Charity list numerous times. It is not an easy thing to enter a legal battle. And it is even worse when you are up against religious people who are lawyered up.
And while they hire lawyers and avoid Haiti law — even while stating publicly they are cooperating with the law — some of the victims in Haiti are receiving death threats (again, as previously stated, not from missionaries). But since June 2007, out of approximately 10,000 police shootings, only five white police officers have been imprisoned for killing someone black.

Raimundo Atesiano, the former Biscayne Park police chief who directed his officers to frame innocent black men for a series of unsolved burglaries, admitted he wanted to appease community leaders and polish the village’s property crimes record.
Even in a small village of about 3,000 residents, the pressure was just too much, he said.

The racial aspect of this case speaks volumes about criminal justice and criminal injustice in America today. Noor, who is Black, Muslim, and a Somali immigrant, is believed to be the only police officer in Minnesota ever to have been convicted for killing someone while on duty.

Since 2010, 201 anti-Sharia law bills have been introduced in 43 states. In 2017 alone, 14 states introduced an anti-Sharia law bill, with Texas and Arkansas enacting the legislation.

The emerging conflict already affecting communities across the country is the practice of Sharia law, which is embedded into the Islamic faith. The conflict arises as an immigrant being granted U.S. Citizenship and takes the naturalization oath, which states: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America.” Taking this naturalization oath and Sharia law is at the outset a conflict.

These laws are not only unnecessary, but also destructive — isolating and denigrating the American Muslim community.

Limiting the number of Muslims allowed to immigrate to traditionally Christian nations would be a prudent decision on the part of politicians, said U.S. Cardinal Raymond L. Burke.

Here's how a man gets around the laws: He marries one woman under civil law, and then marries one, two or three others in religious ceremonies that are not recognized by the state. In other cases, men marry women in both America and abroad.
Sarah begins to cry. Others nod in sympathy. These women are all Muslim. The Koran states that men may marry up to four women. The Prophet Mohammad had multiple wives.

Cheers and claps erupted from the county administration building in downtown Cumming as the Forsyth County planning board unanimously voted to send the application for a proposed Hindu temple in the Shady Shores and Bald Ridge on Lanier communities to the Board of Commissioners with a recommendation of denial Tuesday night.
More than 200 residents dressed in red attended the meeting to voice their opposition to the application, which has drawn attention from the get-go.

http://pluralism.org/encounter/todays-c ... g-battles/
The building was on a busy road with schools, a mall, and a public library, so the volume of traffic and noise was already high. Even so, the Hindu community encountered difficulty. “Get out Hindoos” and “KKK” were written on the walls of the empty, contested building. Not until the Hindus took the matter to the courts were they able to gain clearance to create their temple.

In its 4-1 decision, the board ruled the plan, which would have included a prayer hall, driveway, a house for a priest and two dozen parking spaces, was not appropriate for the rural community. Naresh Das sought the approval on behalf of the Jagannath Temple of North America.

In a federal lawsuit, Hindu leaders in Assemblyman John Wisniewski's hometown accuse the local power broker of trying to browbeat them into accepting a land-swap deal that would relocate their temple to "the other side of the tracks" next to the polluted DuPont chemical plant site.

Louisville officials on Wednesday called the vandalism of a Hindu temple in Buechel a hate crime and asked the community to help clean up the temple and find those responsible for the "cowardly" act.

NORCO CITY OFFICIALS REJECTED PROPOSED HINDU TEMPLE BECAUSE IT DOESN’T FIT THE TOWN’S “WESTERN AESTHETIC.”

“We were stunned when they denied us,” Patolia, also a chairman of the faith organisation, said this week. “They had already made up their minds not to allow it.” The supporters of the temple have already spent more than $200,000 on the 4-acre site, which is wedged between two Christian churches. Another reason added to the reject list by the city officials was about the proposed domed structure of the temple that falls beneath the city’s height allowance.

Ironically, the steeples of the Christian churches exceed city laws, reaching more than 60 feet into the air. Nevertheless, the developers appealed to reduce the building’s height by more than 10 feet and remove the traditional domed architecture that serves as a reflection of their religious expression.

On January 1, 2012, the defendant went on a firebombing spree, attacking five buildings in Queens with Molotov cocktails, including a Shiite mosque, the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation and a private residence that housed a Hindu temple. He was arrested the next day. Following the defendant’s arrest, he stated that he hated Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterners.

Does school bullying, suicides and shootings count as violation of human rights?

Yes it should. Minority kids get bullied all the time which leads to shooting, suicides, conversions, etc. School officials shrug it off as nothing all the time if it's minority.

All told, Acosta’s appearance on Wednesday left many questions unanswered, including the biggest one: why someone who let Epstein get away with a light sentence should remain in charge of an office that deals with human trafficking cases.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyl ... 1a40a8d057
Though there have been surges of media attention about Epstein over more than a decade, no journalist had interviewed the women — now nurses and real estate agents and mothers and professionals — until Brown dove into the story last year.
Epstein gained the media’s notice as a wealthy, Gatsby-like character in the early 2000s. Even then, there were hints and suggestions about Epstein, a man who socialized with the likes of President Bill Clinton and Great Britain’s Prince Andrew, but no outward signs of criminality.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/the-e ... in-the-u-s
The Epstein case is not an outlier. Child sex trafficking is ‘pervasive’ in the U.S.

Human Trafficking Is an Epidemic in the U.S. It’s Also Big Business

https://u.osu.edu/osuhtblog/2018/03/06/ ... s-reality/
Black girls are disproportionately victims of sex trafficking. Black youth account for 62 percent of minors arrested for prostitution offenses (Phillips, 2014) while African-Americans make up only 13.2 percent of the United States population. Many social and racial factors account for why this number is so high.

https://alceehastings.house.gov/current ... states.htm
Every year, tens of thousands of people are trafficked to the United States from over 50 countries worldwide. Half of these victims are children, and nearly 80 percent are women. Centers of tourism, including Las Vegas and Florida, are major destinations for human trafficking victims. The United States has identified Thailand, Mexico, Philippines, Haiti, India, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic as the main countries of origin for domestic human trafficking, but American men, women, and children are also victims of TIP.

https://polarisproject.org/blog/2018/10 ... ng-victims
Why are victims not being identified as victims?
The victims of massage parlor trafficking do not typically react to a police raid the way you might expect. Instead of telling police, “I’m a victim, please help me,” they are more likely to say nothing, or even assume responsibility, because they feel this is the best way to protect themselves and their families.
According to our research, women trafficked in massage parlors are typically mothers in their mid 30s to late 50s, who have recently arrived from China or South Korea, and speak little English. They are usually under extreme financial pressure, and are deeply ashamed to have been fraudulently recruited and coerced into providing commercial sex. They know little about how law enforcement works in the United States, or about their rights here.

https://www.grantmakersforgirlsofcolor. ... ulnerable/
Understanding why African-American girls are being targeted requires taking a critical look at those that are actually taking the girls.
Statistics show that African-American men are overwhelmingly the individuals that kidnap and traffic the majority of America’s sex trafficking victims. However, these traffickers are marketing and selling the services of their victims to a largely white, affluent base.
Due to this, prosecutions of offenders devolve into a question of credibility between a politically advantaged white offender and a vulnerable brown victim. Typically, the result of this is the victim being silenced and blamed for what was done to her.

Homophobic bullying is a serious risk factor for SMY alcohol use, although youths' multiple identities may differentiate degrees of risk. Sexual orientation identity-related disparities in alcohol use among Latino, bisexual, and unsure youth were not fully attenuated when adjusted for homophobic bullying, which suggests that there may be additional factors that contribute to rates of alcohol use among these specific subgroups of SMY.

Bullying victimization related to race or religion is a problem that permeates schools in the United States for minority students. One group of students that are at higher risk for victimization is Sikh American adolescents, which may result from them being stereotyped as foreigners.

Racial bias—of all sorts—is the most common driver of incidents, making up 33 percent of the number reported by educators and 63 percent of those reported in the news media. Their effort to “undermine the legitimacy of Hinduism” manifested itself elsewhere in their draft report when they accused Hindus and Hinduism of appropriating their sacred works and claimed that these texts do not mention the word “Hindu.” (see Figure 3). This is a dishonest argument because the word ‘caste’ too does not appear in Hindu texts and originated with the Portuguese, yet, the same professors pushed for its inclusion in a narrative about the ancient world.
